Only if you suffer from severe tech phobia.......2004-06-03
Otherwise, don't bother. There is little info on the newer IPAQ's and none on the 2003 OS. This is hardly surprising given the 2002 copyright. Some 30% of the pages are dedicated to promotions of peripherals and games (pages 247 to 352 out of 352 pages, not including appendices). Most of the peripherals are now obsolete. More importantly, all this info can be found at any PDA site, for free.
This is a VERY basic text, yet it doesn't cover important items such as data backup and recovery. If it does, it certainly isn't listed in the index. Need to find out how to reset your IPAQ? Forget it. Not in the index and nowhere to be found in the text. However, you will find "Marble Madness" and "bags, carrying."
The text discusses various brands of storage cards, but fails to inform you on how to transfer data onto those cards. Two solid pages are dedicated to specs for an IBM hard drive - info which is available, for free, on the web. Nevermind the question of why someone who needs a hard drive for his PDA would be using this "IPAQ for the severely tech challenged" book?
Compare this to the three pages which the writer begrudgingly alots to troubleshooting and you get a sense of where the priorities are with this book. And by the way, those troubleshooting tips are either available on the web at the IPAQ webpage (guess what? for free) or for issues which have been resolved.
Do a Google search. It'll save you time, frustration and money.
Can I read this on my Ipaq?.......2004-04-09
Handheld Compatible: Adobe Reader supports transfer of e-books to PalmOS devices, but not to Pocket PC or Symbian devices.
Why would a book about pocket pc's only be readable on Palms?
I guess I'll wait for the Pocket PC version, unless this is merely an error.

How to Do Everything with Your Pocket PC and Handheld PC explores the latest developments in the Microsoft Windows CE universe. Specifically, it takes a user-level look at the new Pocket PC specification and the somewhat older Handheld PC design. If you use an HP Jornada, Casio Cassiopeia, Compaq iPaq, or similar personal digital assistant (PDA) and feel sure you're not getting maximum utility from it, you'll appreciate this carefully paced and liberally illustrated explanation of Windows CE, the hardware it runs on, and the software that makes it productive and fun. Odds are good that no matter how long you've been using your Microsoft-based miniature computer, you'll learn something new here. The approach of the book isn't fancy, but it does the job. Pocket PC and Handheld PC features are diligently explained one at a time. Users want to know how to do specific jobs, and the book was clearly written with that in mind. Conceptual explanations combined with procedures and illustrations help readers learn how to make their palm-size buddies do new tricks. Coverage is a bit short on applications other than those in the standard suite, but in-depth sections on multimedia management and Internet connectivity make up for that shortcoming. All together, this is a solid tutorial and reference manual for people who use PDAs based on Windows CE. --David Wall
Topics covered: Palm-size PCs that run Microsoft Windows CE and comply with the Pocket PC and Handheld PC specifications are explained for everyday users. There's documentation of the essential functions of the operating system and its most popular applications (especially Pocket Outlook, Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, and Microsoft Money). Multimedia gets a lot of attention, as does Internet connectivity.

Great starter book to learn the basics before moving on........2001-10-04
Sub-par unless you're technologically ignorant.......2001-04-15
90% of it's content was pretty much common sense stuff that any person who has got a grasp of Windows and MS Office programs could figure out.
I wanted to know how to better manage memory. Do neat tricks with Pocket Word, Excel, and Outlook. All this book points you to is the basics that are in your owner's manual.
In comparision to other books on the subject, "Pocket PC Handbook" by Dan Hanttula, for example, this book was of little help. If you're looking to improve your knowledge of your Pocket PC go somewhere else. If you no nothing about computers, go someplace else. This book doesn't help unlease the pocket PC's potential. Go someplace else.
Great Help for a New Pocket PC Owner.......2001-02-26
It doesn't tell you everything.......2001-01-30
For the Pocket PC, the book walks you through how to set up your new toy and how to use the major applications: Pocket Outlook, Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, Pocket Money, and Pocket Internet Explorer. (Pocket Access and PowerPoint for HandheldPC are also covered.) It was able to answer some of the questions I had had about using the Pocket PC, so it did prove helpful. At the same time, a lot of information is left out. For example, is there an optimal way to adjust the memory settings? The book doesn't tell you. Are there any third-party application switchers that automatically stop an application a la the Palm? The book doesn't tell you.
Another annoying thing about this book is that it was obviously written in a hurry to include Pocket PC features. It might have been a Windows CE book, so you see WinCE references everywhere. As of today there's only one other good Pocket PC book (forget about "Pocket PC for Dummies" and save some money), "Unauthorized Guide to Pocket PC", and I recommend that one over this one.

Fun book for the PocketPC enthusiast.......2003-12-08
The book starts out pretty much how you would expect it: with a section on how to synch your PocketPC and other introductory steps. Once you've got it synched, there is a discussion on personalization features of the PocketPC. The book then goes through each of the types of things you can do with a PocketPC: make contacts and manage appointments, use PocketPC versions of Excel and Word, call someone on the phone (if you're lucky enough to have the PocketPC Phone Edition), take notes, access multimedia content, use mapping software, and even instant message.
this book is not current - Updated Revision Needed Now.......2003-09-24
I have just been introduced to the iPAQ world with a 5555 and MS CE 2003. Most of the CE 2003 Operating System is the same (in appearence) as CE 2003. After reading the HP users manual, which I found sparce, I purchased this book partly for configuration information of WiFi email (which is a major bullet on the cover) and troubleshooting.
I found the book's information on configuration of WiFi email to be basic, almost the same at the HP manual, and there was little information to deal with setup problems that do arise. There are only 2 pages devoted out of 365 that deal with troubleshooting...
