Customer Reviews:
Great Referance Guide.......2007-05-13
This book does a great job of reviewing what you should already know like the basics of networking and teaching you things you don't know like sub-netting. A great tool for any network professional.
Plentiful errors.......2007-03-08
Too many errors in the book, it can cause more frustration and confusion than it is worth.
Easy to read and understand.......2007-01-10
I found this book very helpful and easy to understand.
Review for Dummies.......2006-08-26
I have not had the opportunity to use this textbook as of yet, but I have seen of it, it looks Very Good.
Not geared for the CCNA exam.......2006-04-24
This book is good as a primer if you want consider achieving a CCNA. This book is not good as a study guide for the exam, due to its lack of granularity on most CCNA subjects.

Book Description
Cisco Systems, Inc., is the largest manufacturer of networking systems in the world. It dominates the router and switch market to the extent that Cisco routers and switches are considered by many networking professionals to set the standard for all other companies.
Cisco routers, switches, and other equipment keep running without problems, are readily upgraded, are easily adapted to new network configurations, and are compatible with virtually every transport or access method.
Cisco Networking For Dummies, 2nd Edition, presents the facts, concepts, processes, and applications that Cisco network administrators need to know in step-by-step lists, tables, figures, and text – without long explanations. This easy-to-understand guide covers
- Layering a Cisco network
- Transporting data over the Internetwork
- Routing and switching: inside and out
- Working with WAN technologies
- Designing your own network
- Working with firewalls, proxies, and other safety measures
- Implementing VPNs
Certification candidates may find Cisco Networking For Dummies, 2nd Edition, to be an excellent study aid for preparing for the CCNA (Cisco Certified Networking Associate) or the CCDA (Cisco Certified Design Associate) exams. This thoroughly updated reference gets down to the serious business of
- Transporting on Layer 4 interface
- Wiring up a personal area network
- Flying fast with UDP
- Converting hexadecimal numbers
- Subnetting a Class A network
- Virtually segmenting the LAN

My honest opinion of Cisco Networking for Dummies.......2006-07-10
What a fantastic book with a lot of detail, written in an easy, understandable everyday language. Surprisingly, book was very comprehensive: Covered information about routers, of course, but also switches, bridges and hubs. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is serious about getting a good grasp on Cisco networking.
Just the right book for us beginners.......2003-03-28
Like many others working in small businesses, I assumed the duty of overseeing our network, which has a Cisco router. I was totally lost and the cost (and technical level) of the training available was much too high. So, on the chance it could help me, I purchased this book. I must say that Mr. Gilster has the knack for writing about very technical information at a very non-technical way. Not that I understand all of what he's telling me, but I assume that in time, given more study, I'll soon be able to speak intelligently with our Cisco and network service technicians. Truly Great Job, Mr. Gilster and Thanks!
I'm sorry but Vanilla is right.......2001-07-19
I purchased a copy of this book before reading the reviews - it was so bad I thought I'd come here and see what others thought. I know Networking for Dummies implies that the absolute basics are par for the course but the "basics" stuff is really stale material for a recently written book. If one is a beginner, they should be treated to modern information & new advances in technology that make networking simpler & accessable to the "beginner".The cisco product info is weak, the Cisco site offering way more information on each and every product mentioned in this book. If you want a good Cisco book, my all time favorite is Cisco: A Beginner's Guide (It's a beginners guide but not for dummies !) To be fair, I have read quite a few networking guides and several beginners guides and may very well be beyond the beginner level so perhaps I'm expecting too much. However, I can't say I'm happy spending the money - the info is old, too basic, and often I was able to get better information on the cisco site. Oh well...
No CD with book........2000-12-19
This book Cisco Networking for Dummies does not have a CD as the 'See Larger Photo' of the book cover shows. The book is published without a CD.
Another book published by Hungry Minds, CCNA for Dummies also authored by Ron Gilster, Jeff Bienvenu, and Kevin Ulsted does have a CD. ...
Vanilla.......2000-11-02
If you've got any sort of experience with networking Chapter 1, 3, 5, and 8 are worthless "basics" stuff (thin-net, thick-net, 10-Base-T, etc.). Except for some limited information on doing a little router programming, this isn't a Cisco book at all. It's just a vanilla overview of network topologies, protocols, switching, and routing.
I bought it based largely on the statement in the book description above that "This friendly guide offers easy-to-follow explanations of everything from different Cisco router models..." These "explanations" are the same little blurbs you can find on Cisco's Web site. I was hoping for a guide that showed you how to select the proper device, modules, WICs, flash memory options, etc. from the baffling array offered by Cisco and was very disappointed.
If you're looking for a guide on using Cisco equipment to set up a network, look somewhere else.

Book Description
* Case studies that follow the design process form initial consultation to the end of the pilot.
* Cuts the fluff by providing just the information needed to pass the test rather than reviewing its objectives.
* CD-ROM includes fully customizable test-prep software with hundreds of sample questions modeled on actual CCNP exam questions.
Customer Reviews:
A great place to start.......2004-07-15
This book does a good job of introducing the reader to many of the concepts covered in the CCNP cert exams. If you need a straightforward, plain-language primer on routing protocols, spanning tree, connection options, and support, this is a great book. Unfortunately, it usefulness is limited for some of the details on the 642 series of tests. I *would* recommend this book as part of a layered studying approach to the exams. Additional resources will be more clear after reading this book.
Not enough to pass CCNP.......2003-04-29
This book is more useful for final revision for the CCNP. It does not cover any topic in enough detail to give you the depth of understanding you need for the CCNP. The CD that comes with the book is TERRIBLE. It has errors, missing portions and shows that it was rushed out without any proper quality checking. In short, stick to the Cisco Press books for CCNP information.

Customer Reviews:
Not the latest version of the Cisco Test.......2006-03-12
I'm sure this was a pretty good book - but don't order it unless you want to study for the expired Cisco CCDA test. Their is some similarity but the tests are not the same!
Made a great addition to my CCDA studies.......2003-04-13
Aside form some of the flubs mentioned by rob (which were occasionally annoying at most) I found this text to be a solid resource for test preparation. You need all "everything and the kitchen sink" texts (such as the Cisco Press DCN book), and a book like the Dummies book that focuses on the environment and high percentage areas. Bottom line: I got my certification and this book helped me a lot.
CCDA written by Dummies.......2002-10-27
This book is bad, and I don't mean in a good way. The book is missing a lot of details, and if you have any knowledge the mistakes will jump out at you. For example, on page 44 it gives the OSI model (from 1-7) as Physical, Data Link, Transport, Network, Session, Presentation, Application. Then, it says make sure you know the correct order for the test. Why? The authors don't. On another question, the book says you should answer, "I don't know because you haven't taught me, yet." Try answering a question on the CCDA exam, as I don't know it's beyond the scope of the test. Also, the editor must have just used the spell check and not actually read the book. There are a lot of errors like "form" for "from" and "wit" for "with." You can figure out what they are trying to say, but it is annoying and makes you lose your focus on studying. I do not recommend this book.
Just the right level of detail.......2002-09-10
No frills, but this was just what I needed for that last minute review before the test. I have plenty of experience, but sometimes it's good to brush up on the technical details, and that's what this book provided with a minimal time investment. Much appreciated, Mr. Gilster and Mr. Dalan!
Tough stuff, but I think I get it..........2002-04-13
I really like this book. It covers a lot of ground, but I never felt like I got lost. The material was direclty applicable to both the certification exam, though nothing is perfect. I also think it makes a good "general" networking reference.
Defintely a keeper!
