Poor Index, Missing key concepts, Garbage..........2005-01-18
I frequently use these reviews to select books of all types. I consider myself a power user able to learn rapidly from good texts. This book has not been very helpful for my work in Crystal Reports.
I need to be able to program Crystal Reports to perform a variety of complex reporting on databases that are completely denormalized. Thus, the ability to parse strings and execute stored procedures is critical.
This book completely fails to provide the information about built-in commands that I need. For instance, no information about string commands is present. No discussion of the use of arrays in Crystal Reports is provided.
I was deeply disappointed with this book.
Who are you writing this book for?.......2003-11-13
After reading positive reviews of this title, I decided to purchase the complete reference and was extremely disappointed. The most common problem with crystal books (or any other software application manual-excel, access, etc.) is that the author try's to appeal to all crystal report's users. There are generally three types of software user's out their, 1. database administrator/computer programmers who want reference manuals with excellent indexes. 2. Basic users who can get by with your classic "for dummies" title. 3. User's who don't understand VBA or SQL but want to be able to create reasonably advanced adhoc reports.
This title is to basic for the database administrator who would have to read 4 pages of babble to find the specific piece of information they need. There are no practice assignments for the beginner/intermediate report writer to do just that "practice". And when you do find a title that contains tutorials/assignments they are often to basic and lack real relevance in the business world. With the number of access, excel, crystal, etc. titles on the market you would think that there would be enough room to specifically appeal to the different types of software user's out their.
A good reference book.......2003-03-30
I develop financial reporting applications for various companies using VB and VBA. Recently I have completed a financial reporting system completely within Access 2000 making extensive uses of Access's report objects.
Although the Access report object does its job well, it lacks a lot of power features, i.e., limited grouping capabilities, formula in text boxes is limited to a simply expression unless you make a call to UFD, then you would loss your object encapsulation, etc, The Data Report object is VB6 is still some what of a joke, but let not open this can of worms. Thus, I have chosen Crystals reports for my developing needs.
I find George Peck's Complete Reference series very helpful. The book has 800 pages to teach me every nuance of Crystal. This book does not teach me anything about VB coding nor does it contain a reference to the object model within the RDC or any of the other object models in Crystal. I didn't buy this book to learn how to code. The author noted in page 659 specifically that the book is not meant to teach you Visual Basic.
Overall, this book gets me up to speed quickly and it's a good reference source for my future needs. Personally, I don't find the crystal help files very helpful.
Not much different than Crystal's own manual.......2003-03-15
I purchased this book as a reference. Fortunately, I had a separate training course for learning the Crystal application. And I now teach the product.
It's a good reference. I truly haven't had a question yet regarding basic or advanced procedures in the application that I couldn't find. But I would not recommend it for learning the application. It is dense.
I'm also disappointed that it is not very different from the CR 8.0 manual published by Crystal Decisions. The layout and procession of the book are virtually the same! It could have included more tutorials, too.
One thing that I would love for any CR reference/manual to include is a list and description of all the formulas in the system. To my knowledge, this does not exist anywhere, even in Crystal's own documentation.
PURCHASING RECOMMENDATION
If you need a solid reference and didn't purchase manuals with Crystal, this will work. If you need to learn the product, get something else.
Not so great.......2002-12-11
As you become more and more proficient, this book is more and more frustrating. There are so many things just touched on and not explained or not in the book at all!

Thank you for choosing Managing Enterprise Projects Using Microsoft Office Project Server 2007, an unprecedented learning guide and reference for project managers who use the Microsoft EPM platform. Our goal in writing this training/reference manual is to help you build on your knowledge of the stand-alone tool by mastering the enterprise project management environment. Follow our best practices to success and heed our warnings to avoid the pitfalls.
We take a systematic approach to the topical ordering in this book, beginning with a Project Server 2007 overview in Modules 01 and 02. Module 03 teaches you how to use two new features in Project Server 2007, Proposals and Activity Plans. In Modules 04-07, you learn to use Project Professional 2007 to define, plan, baseline, and publish an enterprise project. Modules 08-10, take you through the project updating process from team member progress reporting in Project Web Access and in Outlook, through your acceptance of the updates into the enterprise project plan. Module 11 wraps up with analyzing project variance. In Modules 12-15, you learn how to set up personal options, how to use the features in the Project Workspace, and how to create Status Reports. Modules 16-18 cover viewing enterprise project information and teach you how to use Data Analysis.
Throughout each module, you get a generous amount of Notes, Warnings, and Best Practices. Notes call your attention to important additional information about a subject. Warnings help you avoid the most common problems experienced by others and Best Practices provide tips for using the tool based on our field experience.

Customer Reviews:
Great resource for users learning Project 2007.......2007-06-28
Excellent book from two of the best known Project gurus around. In terms of learning content everything is clearly laid out and well explained and the text flows very well. A must have resource for all users of Microsoft Project 2007.
Mostly a Rehash of Project 2003.......2007-06-21
A word of caution to those who are proficient in MS Project 2003...this book does NOT segregate new features that come with 2007; existing 2003 functionality is discussed as if you are learning MS Project FOR THE FIRST TIME. If you have used 2003 for any real-world projects, this book will not be very efficient use of your time in learning 2007 features. I think the "Microsoft Office Project 2007 Step by Step" may be more practical for this audience.
And by the way, this is a HUGE book (in terms of overall dimensions and page count) with large print (for unknown reason).
Really the ultimate.......2007-05-17
Well yes, this guide starts from the basics and goes all the way, making it fit for the beginner and those wanting to dig deeper alike, but one can argue, don't they all? I want to call this book outstanding, but then I fezel I have to explain where it stands out as compared to other Microsoft Project learning books.
There are a few unique advantages I want to highlight:
- It handles each topic only once (rather than making one curious in an early chapter and explaining the full truth 10 chapters later)
- It goes beyond just teaching the usage with paragraphs clearly marked as "understanding..." which is absolutely necessary for all users of Project;
- Finally, the richess and quality of the exercice material with many samples clearly based on life situations: not just "staircase Gantt Charts" but overlapping tasks, well chosen milestones..
In short, it will be an add-on for my teaching.
Not just for Project 2007.......2007-05-02
I knew I was going to like this book when I read the first chapter. The authors immediately start with the basics necessary for creating and managing real, viable schedule plans. As the chapters unfold, each aspect of working with Project is explained in a level of detail that is as useful for new users as it is for "seasoned" users who have worked with Project for many years.
Microsoft Project has many features and unfortunately it will allow users to do things that are not recommended except for very unique types of schedule plans. This book pulls from the combined learning experience of the authors to sort out the "recommended approach" from the whole array of Project features. That makes it much easier for the user to develop a good schedule plan at the onset and maintain it through project completion.
If I were to say the book has a downside I would pick on the title. It sounds like it was written expressly for Microsoft's latest version of Project, 2007. However, I would say that at least 80% of the content in this book is applicable to versions of Project going back to Project 2000. That makes it invaluable for users who may not have upgraded to Project 2007. Nonetheless, many new feature were added to Project 2007 and those are clearly expalined throughout the book.
It is a long read - well over 800 pages but the chapters, or learning modules as they are called, make it easy to find a particular topic. I highly recommend it to all users of Project.
John
At long last!.......2007-04-29
It's taken a long time, but finally we have a comprehensive book in the form of a self-paced teach yourself workbook. Gary and Dale have done a great job of simplifying Microsoft Project and breaking learning it into easy to consume chunks.
Both Dale and Gary are Microsoft MVPs who have a wealth of experience and have spent a lot of time over the years helping others in the Project news groups. This experience of Project, and in what problems users frequently have using Project, clearly shows in the text, diagrams and tips throughout the book.
Don't learn Project without it!

Customer Reviews:
Great Start.......2007-05-18
Didn't learn much new stuff. Most is out on the Web but it is nice to have it in one place. I like the book format, good for older coders like me who's eyes aren't like they used to be.
The index is limited/sparce. Wish it had an appendix with the full MSP Object Model and other MSP specific references.
Great start, just want more...
A must read for all VBA lovers.......2007-05-14
The book is a great reference guide of MS Project VBA Programming. Rod, the author is well known in the MS Project comunity and a Project MVP, which makes him the most qualified person to write this book. If you are a VBA starter or an advanced user, you will get very good usage out of the book.
Answers to everything.......2007-03-21
What I like most about this book is there is something for everyone. The code examples are great for learning the tool. More experienced developers will put their minds to work and morph the examples into all sorts of useful and more robust applications.
I go fishing for hints in the book almost daily when I am trying to get things done in Project via VBA.
Since the approach Rod uses is "modular" it is very easy to expand and combine the knowledge. Beginning users can work at their own pace, more advanced users have a Microsoft Project Specific reference and hint book.
This type of work was long over due and I'm glad I found the book; it will be a treasure. No way a shelf queen, this book is being used and recommended to many of my friends.
MS Project for Power Users.......2006-11-21
In "VBA Programming for Microsoft Office Project" my fellow MVP Rod Gill creates an invaluable resource for Project Power Users. Starting with an introduction to Visual Basic Programming for Applications Rod explains with various samples how to face real live project management tasks with VBA.
When working with this book I liked the task drivers and S-Curve samples best. The task drivers sample gives users of Project older than 2007 a handy way to understand the scheduling of tasks. The S-Curve sample underlines Rod's strong knowledge in Excel Programming and gives the reader of the book a powerful tool for project governance. All this without having to write any code, because the companion website for the book includes all source code ready to use.
The book goes beyond VBA programming. It gives more mature programmers samples of how to work with both the Project Server 2003 and 2007 databases. It also explains how to use my favorite feature of Project 2007 - multilevel undo. The book is in a workbook format with exercises for each module so it can be can be used for training courses.
A great guide to one of Microsoft Project's hidden features.......2006-11-16
Using Microsoft Project just out of the box has a number of limitations. You are restricted to the features that Microsoft decided to include, and you have to accept the way that they designed them. Sometimes this is just an irritation, othertimes it is a major roadblock. But, inside of Project is the ability to use VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) which allows you to do anything that is possible in the application and extend it to add additional functionality.
Unfortunately, Project VBA has been poorly documented and promoted until now. Rod's book is a great introduction to this topic and can get you started on the path to making Project obey your will instead of the other way around. Even if you only use VBA to automate a few repetitive chores or perform some special formatting it is well worth the cost of this book.
In my opinion, Rod's approach (a mix of critical information and tutorial) is an excellent way for people to find their way. The existing documentation on Project VBA can be difficult to work through, so Rod's examples and explanations along with recommended practices are essential to make sense of it in a hurry.
This is the first book I know which is completely devoted to Project VBA. Most of the project "bibles" only cover it in a cursory fashion with a chapter or so. It deserves more than that, and Rod Gill has finally delivered a book which does the topic justice.

Product Description
Thank you for choosing What s New Microsoft Office Project 2007. We designed this book as a quick learning guide to get you up to speed with the new features in Microsoft Office Project 2007. The content of this book derives from the Ultimate Learning Guide to Microsoft Office Project 2007, (ISBN: 978-1-934240-00-7) published 1/15/2007. Consider obtaining The Ultimate Learning Guide for a complete learning experience and reference manual, which includes the new features in Project 2007 presented in context with Project Management Institute (PMI) best practices and project management cycle.
Microsoft Office Project 2007 functionality remains mostly unchanged from its 2000-series predecessors; however, Microsoft added a few select features that greatly enhance Project s usability. Perhaps the most potent new feature is the long awaited multi-level undo capability. You can now set your application to support up to 100 levels of undo, and Microsoft added support for undoing macros. For project managers who spend much of their time using Microsoft Project, this feature alone, makes an upgrade worthwhile.
The 2007 edition introduces two additional planning support features to make your life easier. These include Task Change Highlighting and the new Task Drivers pane. Task Change Highlighting instantly highlights all affected tasks in your schedule to indicate the impact of the changes as you make them. The new Task Drivers pane provides you with instant feedback when you need to determine the factors driving a task start date. Finally, the new Visual Reports feature delivers the type of robust reporting capabilities that Project Managers have been yearning for since Projects introduction. Numerous smaller and more subtle enhancements round out the changes in Project 2007 and we cover these changes as well, after exploring the meat and potatoes. Enjoy!
