Customer Reviews:
Many typos to be a reference book.......2007-05-28
There are many typos in the book to be useful as a reference book.
Some figures are of such low quality that it is hard to imagine the book publisher is IEEE.
Along with such a high price, this book is not a recommended purchase.
Good overview and excellent reference text.......2007-05-22
I purchased this book because I needed to very quickly learn about 802.11 for my job. I found this text to be a good source of information and an excellent general reference to have in my library.
This is a book that is intended for engineers and technical experts or those that aspire to be. It is not a basic text for "IT types". Although, I don't believe there are any books on the market right now that do a better overall job than this one, this text is still somewhat lacking in giving a good overall picture of how an 802.11 system actually operates. The book does a great job in covering the low-level details of the standard, however, it would be greatly improved by more examples and diagrams that illustrate system operation.
In spite of its few shortcomings, I highly recommend this book for engineers who need to shore up their knowledge of 802.11 and its many variations.
My Review.......2007-02-18
This book is must have for wi-fi professionals. It describes the protocol in detail and is a good reference to have.
Wireless Bible.......2006-09-08
I am an author of a book about the CWNA(Certified Wireless Networking Administration) certification exam. I recommend to everyone that they buy this book because I consider it the Wi-Fi Bible. The handbook is a MUST have if you want to get a basic understanding of the details of the PHY and MAC layers of the 802.11 standard.
This book is NOT a prep guide for exams but rather is a great 802.11 wireless reference book. That being said, this book is an excellent study resource for all the CWNP certifications.
I give this book SIX STARS
Sad.......2006-06-01
This is a complete rip-off. A grossly overpriced mini pocket reference. That's all that it is...a reference for those who know the 802.11 standard and just want to carry something with them to remind them of one point or another.
If you are NOT already an expert on 802.11 then you won't learn anything from this book. Having read both this book and the 802.11 standard, I must say the standard is much more approachable.
I recommend Matthew Gast's "802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide, 2nd edition". It is about 5 times bigger and sells for about 1/3 the price of this worthless book. Gast's book contains way more explanation, and uses an easy to follow style.

Customer Reviews:
still valuable, if a bit dated.......2003-04-01
Reading a book like this makes you appreciate the rapid advancement of internet technology and the availability of online resources. In some ways this book reads like ancient history. (Remember Archie and Gopher? ftp?) That said, you can still learn how to use many older and traditional information resources, and the book's main focus -- becoming a professional information broker -- remains relevant and intact.
Part One, The Information Business, defines the market for information and the role and requirements of a professional information broker. Part Two, Fundamental Tools and Techniques, is a user-friendly guide to library, government and public records resources. These two sections are still quite useful, though obviouisly incomplete. Part Three, Electronic Options and Alternatives, is outdated, addressing no World Wide Web resources at all, though it does cover online special interest groups (SIGs) and bulletin boards (BBSs) well. Part Four, The Business Side of Information Brokering, is quite valuable and deals with completing a project, marketing, sales, pricing, contracts and billing.
Appendices cover essential resources (books, software and magazines), vendors, conferences, associations and seminars. An accompanying 3-1/2-inch floppy disk contains the appendices as well as electronic forms and letters, and a sample report. Stylistically, this disc is like a fine black & white movie. ASCII text files ensure accessibility by multiple platforms, and elegant but casual writing combined with beautifully-formatted text is information rich. If you buy this book used, make sure you get the disk too.
In short, while some of the content is quite outdated, this book and disk would still prove invaluable for someone who is interested in becoming an information professional. Rich in content, accessible in style.
My information "Bible!".......2000-04-28
A friend recently said I have "an almost pathological passion" for research. Yip, he's right! And this book, along with Reva Basch's "Researching Online For Dummies" has been of invaluable help. I read some parts of both nearly everyday. I've read in other reviews that The Information Broker's Handbook was skimpy on where to find info online. Maybe, but that wasn't the whole point of the book. And, at nearly 580 pages, it is more than sufficient in detail and is a clear, informative guide. Most people probably wouldn't pick a technical manual to read for recreational reading, but it is so interestingly written that it really is hard to put down, and you learn so much even from casual reading a bit at a time. I love this book, and couldn't do without it. It is perfect for information nuts, especially since the Internet is a knowledge junkie's paradise!
Solid Basic of Starting an Information Brokering Business.......2000-04-08
In contrast to Mary Ellen's book, this book is actually for self-starters who are thinking about creating their own small business and covers such excellent basics as the market for information, what an information broker does, the pros and cons of the information business, and then the tools, followed by chapters on marketing, pricing, and project management. Although seven years old now, I still regard this as a good starting point for those who would understand the information brokering business (a small niche within the larger open source intelligence business).
Readable guide to the business aspect.......1999-10-11
This is written in a breezy, but not simplistic style. Ninety percent of it is on the social and business aspects of being an information broker, so the book is good for that. Treatment of info-searching skills is rather skimpy and probably won't tell you anything that you didn't learn in college.
Thorough, engaging and more importantly, very useful........1998-10-17
If you are considering information brokering, this should be the first book you read. It is quite complete, yet you can skim it easily because of how well the material is organized. This is an easy read, as well, thanks to the writing style. Most important of all, you will get current, practical and valuable information. Enjoy!

Get this book.......2004-10-22
I have never wrote a review before but had to with this book. Of the 3 wi fi books I bought here, this one stood apart from the others. Especaily if you are looking to scale up from 1 or 2 user networks.
Best book for the money about 802.11x.......2004-08-09
I purchased this book for a good in-depth overview on the 802.11x protocol. It went above and beyond my expectations. Clearly explained topics and well written chapters come together for one of the best technical books I have read to date. Excellent coverage of the RF properties of 802.11x.Covers all the areas one must consider if building a WLAN, WWAN, or WMAN. This book really opened my eyes to the potential of wi-fi and its applications, I especially appreciated the authors inclusion of various economic aspects in the book. i.e potential for profit in WISP industry, and cost/efficiency analysis of wired VS. wireless networks.
An Easy Way to Understand WiFi.......2003-12-17
I checked it out at the library to get a better understanding of the WiFi technologies and how they can be deployed. As a new marketing executive for a WISP (Wireless Internet Service Provider), I found the information easy to comprehend with enough depth to allow a non-technical person like myself to actively participate in highly-technical meetings. I immediately added it to my Christmas wish list.
It definitely earns its five stars.......2003-10-05
I recently bought this book after I borrowed it from my local library. I tried to find it a second time, and it's always checked-out in all four branches of our library system. The call number is 004.678 OHR. Out of all the 802.11 books, this is one that is the most packed with the real information you need to install an 802.11 network - antenna theory, how to do site surveys, how networks connect together, how to do an as-built. The book also describes how to debunk and overcome the perceived barriers that keep people from using wireless - security, interference, regulatory issues... If I was to recommend one single book on 802.11 to anyone, this would be the one. It definitely earns its five stars.
This book fills in all the gaps!.......2003-09-08
I just got the book recently from Amazon. I was really impressed. I love it. I got just the right and meticulous amount of detail I was expecting compared to other books I've read on the subject. What was really great about this book was all the real-life scenarios which were taken up in detail as compared to other "theoretical" publications. The people who wrote this book really seem to know what WiFi is all about. I would really recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to deploy WiFi networks quickly. Its a great book from both the technical and business perspective.

Customer Reviews:
Very boring writing style.......2003-06-07
Covers several areas which are not found in a lot of other books. However, at many places, it assumes that the reader has some basic knowledge. Completely lacks illustrations, examples, figures. The writing style is very boring - paragraph after paragraph without any structure to these. The information presented is definitely good and useful - but you gotta keep yourself awake !
All in all, I would NOT receommend this to anybody as a first book. I began with Jim Geir's book, and found that very good begin with. Actually a lot of the examples, figures in that book helped me understand many of the concepts mentioned in this book (sometimes in even greater detail). If the authors could improve upon the boring writing style and add some pictures to explain the concepts better - this book would be much better.
Good overview of wireless concepts.......2003-04-21
Gives a good overview and helps build a good foundation in wireless concepts. Authors are from Cisco, but its good to see no bias towards Cisco products in the book. Well-written. Highly recommended as a first book for anyone starting out in Wireless technologies.

Customer Reviews:
Cabling Handbook, The (2nd Edition).......2005-09-06
I received my book in record time and it has turned out to be a very rewarding purchase.
A good review reference to Telecom other than cabling........2001-11-18
If you are a new comer to the telecommunications and want to read on an overview go ahead you are in the right place. There isn't much information here about cabling, nothing ordinary. For cabling information you may want to check out James Trulove's LAN Wiring.
Cabling Handbook- or Not!.......2001-10-13
This second edition of Mr. Vacca's Cabling book is a big improvement over the first edition published in 1999.
This book contains a lot of good practical advise on telecommunications cabling, probably drawn from the author's practical experiences. Designing Cabling systems and cable installation sections are pretty good. However most of this information is also available in BICSI Telecommunications Distribution Methods Manuals, which you should already have a copy if you are working in the telecom field. I feel like a cabling book should have a lot more detail on cabling than topics like Virtual area networks, VPNs, Wireless future, Fiber optic electronics (instead, more info on Fiber cable installations here would be helpful). There are lot better books in those technical areas and you wander why a cabling book should include them. Also, a minimal amount of information is given on the testing cables; so I believe you would be doing better by reading ANSI/EIA/TIA-568-B.2 and B.3 standards. BICSI Telecommunications Cabling Manual for some more details on the subject. If you are planning to install a telecommunication system in an industrial facility and are not familiar with manufacturing environment please look for much more advice than you find here.
A very complete handbook.......2001-04-16
This is a very complete handbook from John Vacca, both for the beginner, in terms of explaining the various technologies, and for the expert, in understanding the complete picture.
Technical, practical, and completely readable.......2001-04-11
The second edition of John Vacca's Cabling Handbook goes even further beyond cabling than the first edition did.
I found the extensive information on wireless connectivity particularly informative, and the chapter on its futures (Bluetooth, UMTS, and practical implications) was eye-opening and fascinating.
On a more mundane level, fiber optic technology and implementation were explained such that I have a far better understanding than before. And I recommend reading through the very practical steps in the chapter on Implementation Plan Development. These will certainly reduce the problems encountered in network installations - physical, technical, and scheduling. Been there, done that...
Being software oriented, I have often kept my distance from such hardware technologies as cabling. However, John Vacca explains it all in a reader-friendly style which makes perfect sense!

It discusses the mitigation of wireless risk at the policy level, cost-effective ways of deploying wireless across large enterprises, and financial controls that reduce unforeseen risks in wireless projects. The handbook also offers the technical details of how you can design, build, and hack nearly all wireless security components.

High Level Overview.......2006-09-04
This is a very well written 10,000 feet overview of wireless security, however, there are more comprehensives texts at less than half the price. Coverage does go beyond 802.11 (major plus) and principals of wireless security are well covered.
If 802.11x is your main interest: there isn't sufficient information (although there are good references) to secure or hack a wireless network.
I would recommend Wi Foo: The Secrets of Wireless Hacking for a better introduction for anyone with an interest in hacking/penetration testing, or for network hardening or Real 802.11 Security (John Edney, William Arbaugh).
The Dummies guide to wireless hacking or Maximum Wireless Security provide equally useful and more practical coverage.
Great Book!!!.......2006-03-19
This book was an easy read. It took a very difficult subject and simplified it for me. I am interested in making a career in wireless technologies. A friend of mine read this book and lent his copy to me. I would recommend it to other readers.

Book Description
Consisting of 25 articles contributed by expert authors from around the world, this handbook begins with a detailed introduction that provides an overview of LAN technologies, performance, security, and security protocols. It then delves further into WLAN technology, covering space-time processing, WLAN and cellular convergence, and a peer-to-peer approach to roaming, along with other topics. The Handbook continues by exploring WLAN applications, followed by an extensive discussion of security that includes the steps that can be taken to minimize WLAN security risks. This text concludes with an analysis of standards, describing 3G UMTS - IEEE 802.11b internetworking and security.
Customer Reviews:
typical CRC comprehensiveness.......2005-08-13
Given CRC's penchant for definitive references, this book was probably inevitable. The authors cover exhaustively the field of wireless LANs. Whatever your interest within this communications space, you should be able to find a detailed explanation of it here. Typically along with a good set of citations of research papers and texts.
The various standards are explained in a manner that should be more comprehensible than the official standards documents, which are usually bureaucratically opaque.
The coverage of security of the network is carefully done. Compared to wired nets, a wireless net is often far more vulnerable to undesired probing and usage. Hence the protracted discussion of how to bolt things down.
The book is well suited for engineers and researchers wishing to implement a LAN or for those investigating new types of wireless nets.

Is it possible a more detailed TOC be provided.......2003-07-23
I wanna express my view, but I have NOT read the book yet.
But I have to choose some stars to submit this note.
Considering the price of the book, a more detailed TOC and sample chapter should better be provided. For me, it is too high a risk to buy it without having them.
