“There’s definitely more to this book than just how to use Expression Web. The chapter on tag properties not only clearly explains Expression Web’s Tag Properties task pane, but it also alleviates some of the mystery behind the use of tags in HTML. This is a great book for all users of Expression Web!”

Customer Reviews:
Expecting the best, and getting it, with this Expression Web book.......2007-05-20
If it's one thing I know, it is to expect the best from "Jimco" Jim Chesire, and he hasn't let me down this time either. I got Jim's first book on FrontPage in the special edition line because of his quality answers in lists and newsgroups.
This new Expression Web book follows along that path of excellence and gives me an insight into the depths of Expression Web and where it can take me.
If you want to learn Expression Web and further your web design studies this the book for you, it certainly is for me, now excuse me while I go learn something new today.

Great book, very good starter for Expression Web........2007-05-16
Very happy with this book, starts at beginner level for Expression Web novices and gets you up to speed quickly. I like how the book moves fast, is a very good resource for someone new to EW. Finish this book and use EW for awhile and you will be making professional looking sites. Don't be scared by the 700+ pages, much of the book is visual, showing you screen shots of every topic discusses. As I am a visual learner this sat very well with me, great EW book.
Essential reading for Frontpage users.......2007-05-14
I found this book invaluable to get me up to speed after using Frontpage. It further explained areas of CSS that I was always foggy on. I also appreciate the author's easy to understand approach and his simple but not simplistic technical approach to describing difficult issues/procedures.
Disappointed.......2007-05-14
This book is more of a reference book than a book for someone new to Expression Web. At the moment I am familiar with HTML and have used FrontPage but unfortunately this book was of little help to me. If you are looking for guidance as to create WebPages using Expression Web this is not your book. At the moment I can't attest its qualities as a reference book.
This book will get the job done!.......2007-05-13
Using Microsoft Expression Web Special edition by Jim Cheshire is probably the only book you will ever need to quickly use Expression Web competently. After reading the first few chapters I was quickly able to deploy a new web site from scratch that was quite pleasing, attractive, and full-featured. I really like Expresson Web, and it is so much better than Frontpage. I am really glad Microsoft has gone this new direction in web programming, and this book is a real help to those wanting well-explained details for getting the job done of quickly building standards based web sites with full-featured capabilities.

Some great ideas.......2007-06-23
This is probably the best book I've ever purchased on e-commerce and marketing. I've been interested in and have been working at building online businesses for over a year now and I have yet to find a book with simple, easy-to-use, and practical ideas.
There were quite a lot of ideas that I would have never thought of. Using some of the techniques in this book, I was able to sell over 50 ebooks to my clients within six weeks.
Great ideas, even though simple and easy to apply.
Thank you Mr. Vitale for helping me out with my online businesses.
Outdated and the Same Ole Rehashed Stuff About Email Marketing..........2007-04-30
Build your email list with opt-ins and blast them with emails. That's the gist of this stupid, waste-of-money book.
I am a fan of Joe Vitale but I don't think I'll be purchasing anymore of his books. He's an excellent salesman and great at copywriting but doesn't live up to his promises from his copy.
Opposite of Fred Gleeck who's books lack pages, Joe Vitale jams his pages with examples, anecdotes, cutsie stories, etc. that take away from the content of the book.
So, where's the happy medium for me? Have a book that has examples related to the text. Don't expand points just to add pages and for no other reason. Cut to the chase but include enough information to make sure it's understood.
Two Great Guys One Great Book.......2007-04-05
Both of these guys coming together means a great book.
I highly respect both of these guys. Email marketing is
one of the most profitable business on the internet.
So if you want to make alot of
profits then I'd grab this one.

Excellent Resource for Online Business Start up and Marketing.......2007-03-03
I almost didn't order this book because of a negative review and I didn't want to waste time or money on rehashed information. I'm glad I gave it a try anyway! This book is the 5th I've bought recently in my quest for education on my new start up business - and, so far, the most helpful. It has specific actions, plans, websites, resources and lots of creative marketing ideas that have really helped me. The authors do discuss building opt-in e-mails lists for marketing, but they do NOT recommend SPAM in any way.
I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to improve their online business, or looking for information on how to start one.
Great chapters on Marketing.......2007-01-27
One can really just say this is a bunch of chapters written by people who just pat each other on the back, but who are these people? Do they have a track record?
After reading the Table of Contents I could hardly wait to get started. The book is a compilation of wonderfully credible peoples' ideas on how to work the Internet for profit. Their combined experience gives not only the newbie, but the experienced, much to think about. There is philosophy and 'nuts and bolts', a highly readable mix, and is especially strong on Internet Marketing, always a place where new ideas are welcome.
It could use a little updating, and is not quite the textbook needed for starting an e-business. For that I loved the new book, "Internet Riches" by Scott Fox, a more detailed practical guide of e-business success stories and strategies that will probably be a classic. Read Fox for strategy and Vitale to flesh it out.

Customer Reviews:
I found the right book to learn asp.net.......2007-05-24
I am an asp programmer. And I would like to transform myself into asp.net. after trying one title after another by reading the PDF files that I found on the net, I thought I found the right book ASP.NET 2.0 Unleashed from Stephen Walther. I bought the book and learned from it. But I got stuck somewhere after the basic controls. The author assumes that the reader is either intermediate or advanced level with the .NET programming skill. I am not at that level yet. Again I went back to find other PDF files and I found this one and I knew this was the perfect fit for me. I bought the book and I am very happy with this book. it teaches asp.net 2.0 from beginning level. It explains in details all the basic knowleges that an asp.net programmer needs to know. Then it moves on to ado.net. But all these are just basics only. not going too far into advanced level. One thing that I like is that I build the project while learning. There are minor wording error. If you don't know programming, then this is the problem. If you already know programming (VB,C#), then you can see the wording error and correct yourself.
If you are looking for a book that set you up from start with .NET, this one is the right one. If you already have the basic of asp.net and would like to get to the advanced level, then you may be disappointed.
Its a good book.......2007-02-24
The Book overall is good, but there are some mis-types in the code that, if you follow along, will screw you up. Its also vague about some things, but if you have some basic knowledge of visual studio and/or asp, it is a good reinforcement.
Here's all the information you need to get up and running with ASP.NET.......2007-02-03
Examples, insights, and even code samples pack a reference for programmers working in C# and VB in an updated second edition to a popular step-by-step guide. Here's all the information you need to get up and running with ASP.NET, from how to build a first web site to applying the free code samples within to more advanced projects. It's a top pick programmers - especially newcomers to ASP.NET - won't want to be without.
Exceptional ASP.NET 2.0 Web Development Resouce.......2007-01-10
'Build Your Own ASP.NET 2.0 Web Site Using C# & VB' is another gem in the long list of precious books published by sitepoint. With their usual spot-on layout and outstanding writing, this 650+ page book is a must own for anyone that wants to learn and EXCEL at ASP.NET 2.0 development. Before I write more, let me list the chapter summary:
01. Introducing ASP.NET
02. ASP.NET Basics
03. VB and C# Basics
04. Developing ASP.NET web pages
05. Building web apps
06. Using validation controls
07. Database design and development
08. SQL
09. ADO.NET
10. Data Lists
11. Grid View and Details View
12. Advanced data access
13. Security and User Authentication
14. Files and Email
Anyone and I mean ANYONE that is new or using ASP.NET 2.0 can and WILL get something out of this book. Unless you are a master uber ASP.NET 2.0 web developer, this book will not only teach but it will improve your skillset from before you started using this text. ASP.NET basics, database connections, listviews, master pages, html controls, etc etc etc... it's all here and it's all G-O-O-D
The price for this book is an absolute steal and I can easily give another HPR for this book as I have many times in the past with the sitepoint line. Sitepoint books are like candy for web developers so if you see that orange, blue and white color scheme, it means one thing: QUALITY
***** HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATION
Excellent coverage of ASP.NET 2.0 for those new to .NET.......2006-12-06
An absolutely terrific book for those of us new to ASP.NET (either 1.1 or 2.0). The book covers ASP.NET 2.0 and uses all the freely available VS.NET-based tools from Microsoft like Visual Web Developer 2005 Express and SQL Server 2005 Express. I come from a J2EE/Tomcat/JBoss background but this book really opens up the .NET world for those of us who are not initiated in the ASP.NET way to build web applications. They spend the 1st 4 chapters using a plain text editor to show the basics of ASP.NET page creation and hooking up virtual directories for the project files. Chapter 5 and beyond dive into the use of Visual Web Developer 2005 Express and the creation of a fully working web site deployed onto IIS. I am only 1/3 of the way there but so far the writing style and coverage provide an excellent presentation of the material.

Customer Reviews:
Great Beginner CSS Book.......2007-06-15
Web design has always been a hobby for me, so I spent a good part of my life in the dark about style sheets. They've really only surfaced as an essential skill in the past few years, and even today a large amount of sites don't utilize them. This book is an excellent introduction to CSS. It is written clearly, without superfluous language, and is accessible to beginners. After reading it, you will have a very good understanding of CSS and you will be able to build your own webpage using current web standards.
The book begins with a basic overview of CSS - it breaks down the syntax, talks about what CSS can do, and tells you why it is a better choice for design than standard HTML tables (CSS is faster and easier to maintain, and the book tells you why).
The next section is a case study. The authors walk you through the creation of a CSS-only page (no tables!), and it's pure magic for someone who's never used CSS before to see how everything comes together. A second case study follows, and the 2nd edition also includes a new case study on how to build a 3 column layout with a footer.
The book is over 500 pages long, but a good 40% of it is an appendix that lists every single CSS declaration and describes their proper syntaxes and when and how to use them. The appendix alone makes the book worth buying as a valuable reference.
A must buy for the beginning CSS developer.
MUCH Better books available.......2007-05-17
Most other books on CSS talk about styling tables. I found this book (for a newbie with CSS) pointless and confusing. Don't bother with it. Other books by O'Reilly can teach one enough about theory to make this book superfluous at best.
A broad introduction to CSS for new users.......2007-05-01
In a sea of books on CSS, this one stands out because of its title, which promises to reveal CSS's great layout powers. Unfortunately, that's as much marketing as truth.
The first third of the book is a very elementary primer on CSS which can be found in all other books and all over the web. The last third of the book is comprised entirely of appendixes, primarily dedicated to describing every CSS property available, and again is widely-available information.
The middle 150 pages does focus on layout, but again its information is fairly elementary and widely available. An experienced developer looking for the secrets of making very complex cross-browser layouts in CSS won't find a lot here. And like too many books, all of the information provided is bound up in a single end-to-end layout project, the creation of a fairly simple three-column layout. If looking for information on a certain feature or technique, the reader can't easily just read a few pages for the information. S/he must stumble around trying to understand the current state of development of this single project before s/he can glean much on the topic.
So, why am I giving it a 4-star rating? I've read at least a half-dozen books on CSS and this one is by a long shot the best introductory text I've seen. The writing is very clear and focused, the examples are well written and illustrated, the appendixes provide a thorough reference, and the book occasionally nods towards the complexities that cross-browser application of CSS can bring.
It just isn't the advanced Holy Grail of complex layouts that I was hoping it would be.
UTOPIA! UTOPIA! UTOPIA!.......2007-02-23
Are you a web designer who is curious about how CSS can help you become a more effective designer? If you are, then this book is for you. Authors Rachel Andrew and Daniel Shafer, have done an outstanding job of writing a cool book that focuses on the question of how to use CSS to accomplish some of the successes that web designers have spent a significant amounts of time and energy to create using nested tables.
Andrew and Shafer, begin with a brief introduction to CSS and the main concepts. Then, the authors show you how to use CSS in practical ways. Next, the authors show you how CSS works. They also show you how to validate your documents and stylesheets to ensure that they comply with the published specifications. The authors continue by looking closely at the ways in which colors can be applied to text and other objects; as well as, to page backgrounds. Then, they examine the question of how fonts can be used properly in CSS-based web design. Next, the authors show you how to create a simple two-column layout. They then show you how to add a third column to the layout you created. Finally, the authors show you how to create a fixed-width layout that's centered in the user's browser window.
This most excellent book begins by looking at how CSS should influence the overall design of a site. Perhaps more importantly, the book shows you how to put the CSS framework in place before you begin to deal with individual HTML elements and their styling!
Excellent book!.......2007-02-12
I'm recommend this book. It's a excellent resource. All people who want to learn to design websites without table, must read this book.

Book Description
Acclaim for Bernie Schaeffer's expert approach to options trading.
"Bernie Schaeffer's penchant for contrary investing is terrific, and his market calls on that strategy have been excellent. He shows how to apply contrary thinking-and many other types of 'expectational analysis'-to option strategies. All option traders should enjoy reading this book." -Lawrence G. McMillan President, McMillan Analysis Corp. Author, Options as a Strategic Investment and McMillan on Options.
"A superb book that will benefit both stock and options investors. It blends technical analysis, fundamentals, investor psychology, and strategy to come up with an excellent approach to the markets. A good read for the investor seeking new trading ideas in today's fast moving markets." -Leo Fasciocco Stock Market Columnist, Investor's Business Daily.
"A breath of fresh air for options traders. Most options books are textbook in nature. Schaeffer cuts right to the chase and provides solid ideas on how to use options effectively for both conservative and trading-oriented investors. It's innovative and fresh. Get a copy." -Thomas J. Dorsey President, Dorsey Wright & Associates Author, Point & Figure Charting.
When nationally renowned options expert Bernie Schaeffer talks, everyone listens. A "Market Maven" on CNBC, a frequent guest on CNN, and a top-rated Timer Digest market timer for the past decade, he has also been a featured speaker at numerous investment conferences. His views on the stock market and the economy are regularly quoted in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Barron's, and Investor's Business Daily. Thousands of subscribers eagerly await each issue of his Option Advisor newsletter, and when he distills his decades of knowledge and experience-as he does in this remarkable book-savvy investors everywhere pay close attention.
In The Option Advisor: Wealth-Building Strategies Using Equity and Index Options, Schaeffer offers his own carefully tested, prudent, and profitable strategies for trading options. He begins by dispelling outdated folklore and beliefs about the options world, and reveals instead how options can be used as an inexpensive, leveraged vehicle for profiting from the movement in an equity. With clarity and logic, he explains the basic principles of options trading, emphasizing, in particular, why options cannot be traded like stocks-a very common and potentially very costly mistake.
Schaeffer delves into the psychology of options trading, demonstrating how to distinguish between "high" and "low" expectation stocks, how to measure sentiment, and how to master the valued Contrary Opinion Theory for successful trading. He shares his wealth-building techniques for selecting the right stocks, assessing risk, managing your options portfolio, and, most important, for reading market timing indicators. What The Option Advisor boils down to is expert guidance on managing your money, while avoiding the most common errors of options trading.
In a detailed section on applications, Schaeffer gives you practical, hands-on advice on how to use a full array of real-world trading strategies, including quick trades, aggressive trading strategies, conservative approaches, portfolio protection, and the increasingly popular Long-term Equity AnticiPation Securities (LEAPS). With characteristic thoroughness, Schaeffer also offers invaluable information on selecting an options broker, opening an options trading account, and doing research on the Internet.
From the novice to the experienced investor, The Option Advisor offers a gold mine of information on how to achieve success in options trading.
Customer Reviews:
get your highlighter, you can find something of value.......2006-09-09
Mr. Schafer writes about several different option strategies. More importantly, he covers several tools you can use ranging from magazine covers to VIX. He also touches on the "Greeks" and money management. The first 130 pages covers the tools and basics of options and the second half of the book covers specific option strategies and more details on how to spot a trade.
There are many black and white charts throughout the book detailing the specific indicators and what they may look like when you want to buy or sell. The examples are clear and easy to understand. I had to read some paragraphs a couple of times to understand which I would expect when learning a new concept.
Each time I go through this book, I am reinforced of what I know and often pick up details I have missed in the past. There is a lot of good information in this book. Someone who wants to increase their knowledge regarding technical analysis and broaden their horizons can gain something from this book.
Worst Newsletter Service.......2005-06-04
The service is a sure way to loose money. I consider myself as a novice investor but I can do better on my own than following his advise. Talking to service rep is waste of your time and effort. The service rep will listen to you but do nothing.
The research company refuses to refund unused portion. What a nice TRAP. I wish I had read the reviews over here before I threw my hard earned money.
Great Technical Analysis.......2002-04-23
Only 50% of the book is about options. The other 50% concentrates on how to use technical analysis to find winning stocks. It is probably the best book for the beginner and intermediate trader. With the Technical analysis, it can be used for both stocks and options. It belongs on every trader's shelf. The reason it didn't get a "5 Star" is that he really doesn't go into closing a position if the trade is going the wrong way. I pretty much had to learn that on my own. I have read it cover-to-cover 3 times and certain chapters at least 6 times.
Super.......2001-10-29
This book is more than an option book. Actually it concentrates more on the technical analysis than options. It tells you what to look for in the charts, option volume and oprn interest, and then which option strategy to use. This is by far my favorite book on stocks and options.
Whining hasn't made anyone ANY money!.......2001-10-24
I find it funny how many negative things I have been reading here and I have a few comments. First, this book is GREAT? In 4 months I made thousands of dollars by following Bernie's strategies. Second, he actually TEACHES how to do something with your money that isn't confusing, unlike many other money making strategy books. Third, he STRESSES over and over that you MUST CUT YOUR LOSSES when they hit 8% and let your winners run to overcome the deficit.
I wonder how many of these negative people that have posted angry messages here were too emotional and let their greed or fear get the better of them while making investment decisions attempting to follow Bernie's advice? I learned a long time ago that being negative and only talking about the problem and not a SOLUTION to the problem is NOT the way to live life.
Please read this book, and FOLLOW HIS RULES. It does actually work. And don't listen to Forbes, for crying out loud they have to hate anyone else that might actually compete with them and make them look bad. How many of you have made a dime off of what Forbes magazine taught you? I haven't. Read this book...it works, but ONLY if you work and FOLLOW THE RULES!

Book Description
Build Your Own Website The Right Way Using HTML & CSS teaches web development from scratch, without assuming any previous knowledge of HTML, CSS or web development techniques. This book introduces you to HTML and CSS as you follow along with the author, step-by-step, to build a fully functional web site from the ground up.
However, unlike countless other "learn web design" books, this title concentrates on modern, best-practice techniques from the very beginning, which means you'll get it right the first time. The web sites you'll build will:
Look good on a PC, Mac or Linux computer
Render correctly whether your visitors are using Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, or Safari
Use web standards so your sites will be fast loading and easy to maintain
Be accessible to disabled users who use screenreaders to browse the Web
By the end of the book, you'll be equipped with enough knowledge to set out on your first projects as a professional web developer, or you can simply use the knowledge you've gained to create attractive, functional, usable and accessible sites for personal use.

Beyond just "good".......2007-05-31
I view this book as a great update on older HTML books (like Visual HTML series). While many of those were really good, many were also missing some important information on things like Cascading Style Sheets.
In this book, you have it all - basically, you start with a small project, which eventually grows into a very nice site (if you're willing to invest energy into reading/working, of course). Along the way you learn stuff which may seem ultra-complicated, but when explained by Mr. Lloyd, it suddenly turns into something that (almost) anyone can understand.
The GREATEST reference so far........2007-05-14
Buy this book, not only if you're a beginning web designer, but also if you're transitioning from table based design to CSS. Read it from cover to cover (it is soooo easy to read and EVERY bit of info is useful), and keep it by your side for quick reference. Follow it up with 'html utopia' by sitepoint and you will see how easy, effective and rewarding it is to build a website using html and CSS. I wish I had this book when I first started monkeying around with web design. The distribution of 'how-to' content, the theory behind it and references for more info on each topic couldn't have been better. Yay for that.
Extremely Easy to Read.......2007-03-24
I had tried learning HTML & CSS for about the last year by going to various "educational" websites and by looking at the source code from sites that I visit. What I found was conflicting ways of doing things.
Eventually, I stumbled across this book and decided to order it. It was so easy to follow that I breezed right through it. Along the way I learned exactly what I had been trying to learn for the last year or so. The information is presented in such a logical and straight-forward manner that I easily absorbed the information.
It has a very extensive reference appendix that I'm sure will come in handy for a long time.
I just can't wait to start building my site!
Excellent Beginner's Tutorial.......2007-02-28
This book serves its purpose ably, showing the virtual beginner how to build web pages. The author keeps the reader interested with a subtle mix of humor and useful tips. The example web site contains many of the elements a beginning web developer needs to produce an aesthetic site built on sound principles.
While the author does some hand holding through the process it's by no means a dummied down book. By the time you finish the book you will find yourself able to create a nice 10-page web site.
I've been struggling through several books -- this is the one you want.......2007-02-07
I hate cutesy books with lots of graphic distractions and interruptions (are you listening, Wired?); and those who are poisonously cynical might consider this book a little cute, but it is amiable, readable, linear, and above all, it actually tells you what to do. After many months of trying to figure out other people's books, this one actually put me on the air, and I am honestly grateful for it.
If you can't do a site with this book you can't do sites -- which is okay, whatever your talent is, find your niche and do great things!

Book Description
Build Your Own Database-Driven Website Using PHP & MySQL is a practical guide for first-time users of PHP & MySQL that teaches readers by creating a fully working Content Management System, Shopping Cart and other real-world applications. There has been a marked increase in the adoption of PHP, most notably in the beginning to intermediate levels. PHP now boasts over 30% of the server side scripting market (Source: php.weblogs.com). The previous edition sold over 17,000 copies exclusively through Sitepoint.com alone. With the release of PHP 5, SitePoint have updated this bestseller to reflect best practice web development using PHP 5 and MySQL 4. The 3rd Edition includes more code examples and also a new bonus chapter on structured PHP Programming which introduces techniques for organizing real world PHP applications to avoid code duplication and ensure code is manageable and maintainable. The chapter introduces features like include files, user-defined function libraries and constants, which are combined to produce a fully functional access control system suitable for use on any PHP Website.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2006-07-10
I highly recomend this book. I think it best serves those who already know the syntax of PHP, but it is a excellent book. I recomend either "Learning PHP" (The O'Reilly book) or "PHP for the World Wide Web : Visual QuickStart Guide" for a beginner. Both of these books will help you learn the syntax and concepts of PHP, but then it is best to move on to a book that gives practical examples, and this book excells at giving practical examples.
A good book for getting started with php and databases........2006-07-04
By reading just the first 4 chapters I was able to create my own webpages using php and the mySQL database to store tables of data. It has some good example programs that you can follow.
Sitepoint PHP and MySQL.......2006-04-20
Sitepoint (both the books and the website) is an excellent resource for quick learning of the latest and greatest in web development technologies, and this book proves it. Very clearly written and easy reading; a practical, hands-on tutorial. Provides everything necessary to develop and serve up a top-notch website backed by a powerful database.
Very good introduction.......2005-09-14
Author Kevin Yank states up front that this book is intended for intermediate- to advanced-level Web designers. I think this is an appropriate designation, as a beginner would quickly become overwhelmed at the rate with which Yank introduces such heady topics as Relational Database Design (Chapter 5) and Regular Expressions (Chapter 7). It's important to note that this book is an introduction to server-side technologies, not web site design; therefore, I recommend that the reader have experience with creating web sites and with client-side coding (HTML, JavaScript). Consider the pace: Chapters 1-3 of the book cover installation, your first MySQL database, and your first PHP page. Then by Chapter 6, the reader is coding a (admittedly rudimentary) content-management system!
Is this book for you? Consider that for the price, you get a basic introduction to a broad number of topics: 1) PHP installation, 2) MySQL installation, 3) relational database design, 4) using server-side programming to reduce client-side coding, 5) database administration, 6) writing effective SQL queries, 7) structured programming techniques, such as using includes, and 8) implementing cookies and sessions. If you are already comfortable with at least half of the topics in this list, then you are probably ready to graduate to a more in-depth book than this one. If much of this sounds new to you, then you will find Yank's book an excellent introduction. Yank writes as if he was a friendly tour guide, at each step of the way walking you through what he has done and why he chose to do it that way. Because the style is so conversational, it's easy to go back and re-read a chapter, which many readers might find themselves doing.
While the cover of the 3rd Edition (February 2005 update) goes at length to point out that the book covers PHP5, there is negligible content that goes beyond PHP4.x. None of the coding, and none of the author's discussions on effective programming techniques, addresses OO programming at all, let alone how it's implemented in PHP5. This is not necessarily a negative aspect of the book since, again, it's essentially an introduction. Just don't let the packaging fool you into thinking you're getting more than you actually are.
For me, the primary value of a book like this is in the initial chapter, where it provides all of the necessary steps for installing PHP and MySQL in one place. While the online documentation for both technologies is excellent, I have found that it can be confusing to switch back and forth between the two sites to get your own set-up installed and configured. If you're like me and must add Apache installation to the process, it only compounds the problem. Yank provides clear instructions for Windows and Linux users, with a nod to Mac X users, on installation and post-installation tasks.
Mainly for this information, this book is an excellent way to get started with server-side technology, but it is not at all suitable for production purposes. As with any server or server-side technology, security is a major and much-debated topic of concern with PHP and MySQL. Yank does address some of the basic methods of protecting a MySQL server from attacks, including how to password-protect the root user account and how to grant only necessary access to new users. I'm sure many PHP programmers will argue with Yank's recommendation that PHP's "Magic Quotes" feature be left On, since turning it Off "exposes you to hackers attempting SQL injection attacks on your Website if you are not very careful to write scripts that protect themselves from such malicious behavior" (p. 24). Mind you, he is simply quoting the recommendation at php.net, since the On setting is recommended for beginners, but it points out why this book is not suitable for production-ready applications. Yank does provide abundant footnotes for the reader to find more detailed information, including the online documentation at www.php.net and www.mysql.com.
Yank very often invites the reader to consult the forums at [...] for further information and advice. Do not construe this as a mere marketing ploy. The SitePoint forums are indeed an excellent resource, with an active and often well-experienced audience.
All of the code listed in the book is available as a download from [...]. Simply provide your e-mail address, then you will be prompted with a question that you can answer only if you have the book in front of you.
Great place to start when diving into the topic.......2005-02-10
This book is for those who like step-by-step directions accompanied by explanations of how things work. I learned many things using this approach. This book is a stepping stone to creating dynamic Web sites.
Yank does a fine job covering a little of everything without overpowering the reader with too much. Anyone who has experimented with Perl, PHP, ASP.NET, MySQl, Access, some of them or all of them will like the book. Those who can write PHP and MySQL with little help need to find a more advanced book (don't have suggestions, but I am sure others do).
I rarely ran into problems while following the examples. I've worked with other technical books and hit a brick wall at times requiring a call for help or serious research. While working with this book, I only got stuck once and immediately figured out the problem with a little research.
Yank uses visual aids and avoids jargon when explaining the process of laying out the database tables. A reviewer commented that Yank missed important concepts regarding databases. This book is not meant to go into such details. There are other books for that.
This book is well-rounded in covering all the necessary components of building a Web site using a database. While adding data, viewing tables, and querying the database, you're learning tasks that will come in handy for future projects.
Not only do you get instructions for PHP and MySQL, but also advice on structuring code so that it's used effectively.
If you've never installed Apache, PHP, or MySQL or can't recall how to do it, the steps for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X are in the first chapter. Since the latest edition covers PHP 5, the author addresses the differences in PHP 4.3. When working on the first PHP script, there is no "Hello World!" for a change.
The early chapters provide a good overview of PHP and MySQL. By Chapter 4, the contents of the earlier chapters are integrated as the backend database connects to the Web page with PHP. The next chapters show how to use forms to manage, add, delete, edit, and search data. By midpoint, the reader has designed a database, organized it, created Web pages for the data, added administration pages, and administered the database. Yank also explains how to generate cookies and build a simple shopping cart.
The appendices include MySQL syntax, functions, column types, and PHP functions to use with MySQL. The book has an accompanying Web site that includes errata and four free sample chapters. Having edited a few tech books, I know how easy it is to miss things when you're working on different computer set ups and application versions. Check the site especially since it has the code from the book. When running into problems, compare your code to the code from the site.
One chapter has a challenge along with the solution (a couple of pages later, so you're not tempted to peek). Having a challenge like this in most chapters, I believe, would help cement the learning. Overall, it will make the purchaser happy.
The four free sample chapters give you a good idea of what the book is about and its style

You'll find the latest on SIP usage beyond VoIP, including Presence, instant messaging (IM), mobility, and emergency services, as well as peer-to-peer SIP applications, quality-of-service, and security issues--everything you need to build and deploy today's SIP services.
This book will help you
* Work with SIP in Presence and event-based communications
* Handle SIP-based application-level mobility issues
* Develop applications to facilitate communications access for users with disabilities
* Set up Internet-based emergency services
* Explore how peer-to-peer SIP systems may change VoIP
* Understand the critical importance of Internet transparency
* Identify relevant standards and specifications
* Handle potential quality-of-service and security problems

Well worth the read.......2007-04-03
Very interesting approach to SIP had a lot of good information about what the future may bring
Superficial.......2006-08-31
I bought this book to better understand the inner workings of SIP but, instead, was greeted with a superficial introduction to a miriad of SIP applications, services and options. At the end of the day RFC3261 is a much better source of information, as dry as it might be. As such, I cannot recommend this book to anyone trying to learn the intricacies of SIP.
Disorganized and too shallow.......2006-05-16
This books presents SIP, the protocol for Session Initiation. It covers many aspects, including conferencing, security, Internet telephony, user preferences.
The book is not 400+ pages as Amazon indicates but just below 300. Why does this matter? Because, with 17 chapters, this gives an average of less than 20 pages per chapter. As you can guess, 20 pages are not sufficient to explain topics such as Internet telephony, or conferencing. Even the SIP protocol is not presented fully. Only the major messages are listed with a short description of their use.
I was also disappointed by the book organization. The SIP Overview chapter which explains how SIP works is chapter 5. All the preceeding chapters mention SIP before we even know what SIP is. This is most confusing unless you have already some SIP knowledge.
The book tries to cover too much. We get a whirlwind tour of many topics, none of them explained appropriately. The book opens many issues that remain unanswered. If you want a shallow overview of SIP, this book may meet your need. But you are likely to quickly need something more in-depth.
Excelelnt orientation.......2006-03-09
I am new to the SIP protocol and thisi book gave me exactly what i was seeking: a comprehensive explanation of the SIP architecture and the uses of SIP. The specific chapters on SIP and User Services, Security, IP telephony, DNS and QoS all provided the basics necessary to understand the tradeoffs and issues with implementing SIP.
SIP Seminar.......2004-08-24
This is a great place to start to give you perspective before you dig into the RFCs. Or if you never intend to read the RFCs, this book will give you enough of an understanding of some of the fundamental technology so that you'll be able to follow some of the deeper issues of SIP. Well written too.

Great book on JMS.......2004-10-08
I've been working with WebSphere for over 5 years (since the beginning) and this was still worth reading. Great book full of examples, step-by-step "labs". This is focused on WebSphere and MQ, but will be very helpful to those who wants to use MQ with any other J2EE server. If you are not MQ and not WebSphere user - this still will be helpful since it has great deal of JMS basics, but you will have to use your vendor's tutorials and examples instead of those in the book. Concepts are still the same.
Decent book for JMS.......2004-09-25
This is a very decent book for JMS. It works out well to learn the basics. It goes into good depth on the basics. After the basics your pretty much on your own for getting too advanced.
An excellent way to learn JMS!.......2004-07-31
This book makes the process of learning JMS easy for all skill levels. Dr. Yusuf provides real-world examples in a language that is down to earth. He has assembled its content into sections for someone just learning JMS while providing code samples for the seasoned developer. I found the "how to" diagrams extremely helpful when configuring Enterprise JMS in WebSphere. This is a must have for anyone interested in JMS and how it's applied in an IBM WebSphere environment. This is an excellent book!
An extremely useful, practical and well-written book on JMS.......2004-07-24
I found this book extremely useful. It is practical, well-written and provides the necessary ancillary information required to understand the topics. The author builds up nicely from messaging, to JMS basics, advanced JMS topics, IBM JMS offerings, hands-on scenarios(which bring it all together, especially for people who learn by doing), and deployment. In addition, throughout the book, the author provides implementation considerations, recommendations and best practices, which will be of great value to designers and developers alike.
Awesome comprehensive work !!.......2004-07-23
Dr Yusuf has done a great job in pulling together many areas of technology into a comprehensive work addressing JMS as well as the role of messaging in a WebSphere/WAS environment. I have been working with WAS as well as WebSphere MQ for a number of years and this book is a must buy for developers looking to integrate applications with JMS or exploring/developing with the messaging features of WAS. Well done!!!
