    Book Description

A digital audio workstation (DAW) is a PC or Macintosh equipped with sound cards and software for editing and processing digital audio. A properly outfitted computer can now function like a sophisticated recording studio, using plug-ins and special software to create recording-studio quality sound on the desktop, and then allowing users to edit and process that sound to perfection. DAWs are not only revolutionizing the way music is recorded, but allow new forms of electronic music, created entirely in the computer, to be written and recorded on the desktop. The Digital Audio Workstation Studio, by renowned digital music expert Colby Lieder, will be the first book to teach the complete DAW process, from outfitting your computer with the necessary hardware and software, recording with the proper microphones, using DAW power to create perfectly modulated mixes, to finally mastering down into a completely professional finished product. With this book, a computer, and a little imagination, any musician can create utterly professional music CDs, DVDs, or streamed audio.

      Book Description

Electronic musicians and composers will create songs or loops only minutes after launching the software with this guide to FL Studio (formerly Fruity Loops), a complete virtual studio application. How to streamline the recording of multitrack musical compositions is explained in order to create complex songs and realistic guitar loops with 32-bit internal mixing and advanced MIDI support. Musicians are then shown how the resulting song or loop can be exported to a WAV/MP3 file and how MIDI events can be exported to a standard MIDI file. Preparing FL Studio for effective work, carrying out the main operations, building patterns in Step Sequencer, creating a melody in the Piano Roll view, and assembling and mixing a composition using Playlist and Mixer are also described.

1 out of 5 stars Not Helpful to Beginners and Worthless to Advanced Users.......2006-10-10

Petelin and Petelin have created a very well-padded book (it contains more useful information on several VSTi plugins that can be used with FL Studio than it does for FL Studio itself) that is very spare on useful information having to do with using FL Studio. Most of the FL Studio related content is handled better by Image Line's own FL Studio help file and the tutorial videos available to all registered users on the FL Studio website.

Arranged more like a help file than a book, this manuscript simply covers the basic functions of FL Studio in rudimentary fashion, never really explaining in depth exactly how to use the tools found in the program. For example, if one turns to the scant index looking for mention of how to record, one finds only one mention of recording and that is "recording the guitar." If you turn to that page (237), you'll find only a few paragraphs about recording guitar, in general and no mention of how to do so in FL Studio. Since the basic function of FL Studio is that of a recording environment, this is an inexcusable omission. There is almost nothing in this book that would tell a beginning user how to begin recording multitrack compositions and that is what most users are going to buy the book expecting to learn.

Since the book is of no use to beginners, I can assure you that no experienced user of FL Studio is going to find anything new or helpful here, either. Better to read the Loop Talk message board on the FL Studio website, where you can find tips and tricks galore, as well as ready answers to your questions about FL Studio.

Trying to glean any useful information from this book that can get you started making music in FL Studio is a highly frustrating experience. I consider my time spent doing so a complete waste and my money wasted, as well.

        Book Description

Covering the newest version of the popular software for working with music and sound, Cubase SX, this book serves as a recording professional's guide to recording melodies and accompaniments, arranging, recording the vocal and actual musical instruments, processing MIDI and audio effects, using virtual synthesizers, and mixing. For beginners, a primer gives the forms of representing musical information in Cubase SX including Score Editor, Key Editor, List Editor, and Drum Editor. Also described is the order of executing basic operations, such as loading and saving project files, playing back and recording MIDI compositions, recording the audio track, and connecting plug-ins. More experienced computer musicians are presented with a detailed description of the interface and methods of effectively working in all the program's windows.

          Book Description

"The Recording Studio Advisor" is the book that all audio engineers as well as aspiring and professional musicians and producers want to have in their studios. This complete "behind the scenes" guide provides a clear view of the human aspect, technology, science, and art that exists in the creation, recording, mixing, and mastering of an audio recording. With enough detail for advanced readers, the writing style is accessible to beginners also. Readers examine the recording process from start to finish. It addressed the oft-overlooked issues of learning to listen, interaction with artists, providing the right space for performance, and technical issues through practical examples. This book offers the right balance between real-world usage and pure theory. While many other books cover the large analog-style classic studio, this one also includes a thorough examination of the digital technology used in most studios today and how to achieve the best capture of a performance, whether in a project studio, "big room," or live on stage.

            Book Description

It helps that Apple is using in-store appearances by hip musicians like Liz Phair and Rufus Wainwright to promote it, but even without that bait, you would have reached the same conclusion on your own: That is, Apple's free-on-all-new-Macs (and $49 as part of the iLife '04 suite) GarageBand software is just about the coolest thing to come along for budding musicians since, well, the garage itself! In these pages, the man who wrote the book on the iPod--Secrets of the iPod author Christopher Breen--shows you how to make at least some of the music you'll want to store and play on it. Through fun projects, friendly instruction, and real-world insights, Chris steps you through the process of using GarageBand to transform your Mac into the home recording studio you've long coveted. In short order, you'll find yourself turning your Mac into any of 50 supported instruments, plugging in your guitar to record your own parts, adding tracks, applying prerecorded loops, mixing your soon-to-be hits, and more.
