5 out of 5 stars A great supplement to self study books .......2006-12-12

I have never been a big fan of the video instruction products out there, advertised to help us study for professional certifications. Most of the ones I've seen consisted of bad graphics, with someone reading - in a boring monotone - the same book that I could have read to myself much faster. So I wasn't expecting much when I recently received the CCNA Video Mentor from Cisco Press. I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised with this package.

The author - or should I call him the instructor, Wendell Odom, has a pleasant enough voice. Instead of the usual monotone, he actually uses emotion and inflection in his voice when making his points! I never once felt like reaching for a pillow. More importantly, he leaves out the redundant boilerplate and gets right to the subject.

I started, of course, with the introduction, where he explains what you will see on the screen. It's probably good for newbies to go through this, especially if you are not familiar with the look and feel of the Cisco IOS command line, and switching between different routers and switches in a lab environment. It also covers the screen setting and other useful information on using the video. Video Mentor comes with a thin but useful companion manual. It includes the network topology used in each lab, the IP addresses, and screenshots of the beginning and ending device configurations. If you've ever spent time putting Post-Its on the pages of a book so you could flip back and forth to view the lab, you'll appreciate this. It is also available on the CD as a PDF.

Next, I decided to skip ahead to two of the more complicated sections, NAT and ACLs, and see how well Odom handled the complicated stuff. I was very happy to see that the first thing Odom did was explain the terminology. I can't tell you how many times I've read a book where the author uses a new term in chapter 3, but doesn't explain it till chapter 7! Common sense does still exist! He explained the terms he was going to use before using them! Most important though, is the content and how well it is explained. Odom's use of graphics and tables along with his corresponding narrative, explained the concepts simply and accurately. He switches between graphics showing what he is going to do, and the router command line interface (CLI), where he shows the commands used and the results. In both of these chapters, pretty complicated subjects are explained and demonstrated with just enough theory so that you understand the concept, and real world configurations, so that you can actually learn something useful. I was satisfied enough that I went back to the beginning and went through the entire course.

I think Video Mentor is a very good compliment to other self study courses, especially if you don't have regular access to your own routers and switches. As Odom points out, this is not a stand alone course that will prepare you for the CCNA exam. It is more of a supplement to other books, and even refers to the corresponding chapters of other Cisco Press books for each lab. If you've ever read something in a CCNA course book and said, "I kind of get it, if I could just get one or two questions answered...," then get this course. Get the theory from the books, and then let Wendell Odom show you what the theory does in practice. Okay Wendell, let's see what you can do with a CCNP course...

4 out of 5 stars CCNA Video Mentor - A valuable CCNA Prep Resource.......2006-11-05

As an instructor of the Cisco Networking Academy, teaching the CCNA curriculum, I'm always looking for supplemental materials to help my students pursue their CCNA certification. I've been waiting for a long time for somebody to author and release an "instructor in a box" type of product, complete with video, lecture, slideshow material, as well as professionally-demonstrated labs - with this product, I got two out of the three, so I guess that's pretty good. I demonstrated some of the content from the CCNA Video Mentor to a few of my students, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. They found that the lecture was done at an appropriate pace, with an appropriate level of detail. Many of them immediately went out and purchased the product for themselves. From my perspective, the lab demonstrations performed by the authors are by far the BEST I have ever seen. I'm tired of simulations of this or that, and seeing the authors perform the configuration in real equipment was a major PLUS. The ability to review the material over at your own pace is an invaluable resource to those seeking CCNA certification. I would definitely recommend this product to anybody seeking the CCNA track, but I still think the name "Video Mentor" is a little misleading --- but still a very good product nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars A great resource for the CCNA exam.......2006-10-16

The days of passing the CCNA exam using just a single exam preparation guide are over. The new improved CCNA exam requires a certain level of understanding and confidence running router/switch commands from the command line interface. Exam questions include multiple-choice single answer, multiple-choice multiple answers, drag and drop, fill in the blanks, testlets, simlets and simulations. The simulation exams are usually configuration tasks of some sort.

Wendell Odom's CCNA Video Mentor focuses primarily on the configuration tasks of the CCNA exam. These tasks are the major implementation and operation topics on the 640-801 exam. The Cisco Video Mentor package consists of a CD ROM and a lab manual. The CD has 12 labs ranging from basic router and swich configuration and configuration file management to more advanced topics such as RIP, single and multi-area OSPF, EIGRP, NAT and access lists. The lab manual also exists as pdf files on the CD in case the printed lab manual gets lost. The CD runs on both PC and Mac.

I have used many CBT (computer based training) packages from different vendors and CVM compares favorably with all of them. Wendell Odom gives an excellent running commentary as he goes through the objectives of each lab, explaining the lab scenario and topology and then going through the lab configurations, explaining the commands and the output from each command. I found the NAT overload lab especially helpful.

The CVM is a great CCNA exam preparation tool, but should be used in conjunction with a good exam guide(ICND and INTRO) as it addresses very specific topics.

This is another winner by Wendell Odom. I give this resource 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars An essential resource for your CCNA exam preparation!.......2006-10-10

An essential resource for your CCNA exam preparation! Published by Cisco Press, The CCNA Video Mentor, ISBN 1-58720-168-2, by Wendell Odom, provides trainees with over two hours of personal instruction on the following topics: CCNA Basics, LAN switching, Basic routing, Advanced routing, WAN and Security.

The author, Wendell Odom, is known for being a best-selling author and instructor. This material is another quality product from Mr. Odom. It includes 12 video labs that are easy to follow. The packaging includes the CD and a professional printed lab manual. There are no pre-installation requirements or setup procedures that need to be applied. The product and video instruction is solely conducted from the included CD-ROM.

The main menu is easy to navigate and very straight forward. The CCNA candidate can start right away with either basic router and switch commands or re-enforce more difficult VLAN and Access List methods. The introductory video explains the layout of the CCNA Video Mentor (CVM). The reader will gain useful information from reviewing this video from the beginning. The second option on the main menu is the Video Labs. Each video includes the lab scenario with explanations and diagrams, demonstration of the Client Interface Commands used to implement and verify a particular router or switch feature in the lab network and ongoing commentary from the author. The third choice on the main menu is the Printable PDF option. The PDF's contain the same content that is included in the pre-printed lab manual that accompanies the product. I found this option useful for following the labs, as well as, for making notes before, during and after conducting the lab scenarios.

The labs included in the product re-enforce the twelve most important objectives of the CCNA Exam. They are as follows:

Lab 1: Navigating a Router/Switch Command-Line Interface
Lab 2: Router Configuration and Managing Configuration Files
Lab 3: Switch Basics: Learning, Forwarding/Filtering, and Interface Settings
Lab 4: Configuring VLANS
Lab 5: Static and Connected Routes
Lab 6: RIP V1 Configuration
Lab 7: RIP V1 with Split Horizon, Route Poisoning, and Poison Reverse
Lab 8: Single-Area and Multiarea OSPF Configuration
Lab 9: EIGRP Configuration and Operation
Lab 10: NAT Overload (PAT)
Lab 11: PPP and CHAP Configuration
Lab 12: Access Lists

Although this is a great resource for studying for the CCNA exam(s), 640-821 (Intro), 640-811 (ICND) or 640-801 (CCNA), this should not be the only information utilized. There are several other materials that the CCNA candidate should start with, such as, CCNA Intro Exam Certification Guide (CCNA Self-Study, 640-821, and 640-801), ISBN: 1-58720-094-5. Thereafter, the CVM will be are valuable asset to ensure your CCNA exam success! It would be great if this product would be included in the aforementioned certification guide, based on this, I give this material 4 out of 5 stars.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best book on IPv6.......2006-04-19

I have half a dozen books on IPv6 on my shelf and by far Migrating to IPv6 provides the most comprehensive view of IPv6 and related protocols in both breath and depth. The book is written in clear and concise manner so it is a perfect learning tool. Moreover, it also makes for a good reference book because each chapter in the book is self-contained.

Our team works on IPv6 transition and we liked Migrating to IPv6 so much that we order a book for each team member. This is a must have book if you are working in Networking.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and up-to-date reference ..........2006-01-23

This is a very comprehensive reference for IPv6. The author covers IPv6 from the basics to advanced topics like multicasting, anycasting, and mobility. The book even covers the application aspects of IPv6 and porting issues, as Marc has that background as well. I would recommend this book to anyone seeking a up-to-the-minutes overview of IPv6, and as a reference for anyone that will be working with the protocol over the years ahead.

5 out of 5 stars Great V6 Transition Handbook.......2006-01-20

Really useful IPv6 books are few and far between because the technology is so new and evolving rapidly so its hard for a book to keep up. Marc's new book is the most up to date and informative book available now. I've got a copy on my bookshelf and am already handing it to clients for reference about our IPv6 integration projects.

Amazon's date is wrong on this book. It was just published in Jan 2006, not in 2002.

Sylvia Hagen's book IPv6 Essentials is also excellent - I'm waiting for the 2nd edition to bring it up to date.

5 out of 5 stars Understand technology behind without reading T11 standards .......2005-03-05

This book is quite dry, no question about that, but not as dry as the standards published by organizations in charge with Fibre Channel standards. Yet, as a SAN designer or SAN administrator you can find in it all the information you need to understand the inner details of a Loop Insertion Primitive or how an Alternate buffer-to-buffer credit model works. Compared with other books on the subject is remarcably error free and I was nicely impressed by Mr. Clark's considerations upon what should be the customer' role in steering vendors in developing products that are more open and interoperate better.

4 out of 5 stars Very detailed description of SAN technology.......2003-11-17

This was a very good overview of the many varied components and technologies that make up a storage area network. It goes into a lot of detail about things like standards, protocols, speeds, etc. If you want to understand the differences between iSCSI and FCIP, for example, this is the book for you. The word "Reference" in the subtitle is accurate. It's not a guide on how to administer a SAN day-to-day in the real-world; it's about the concepts and details of what a SAN really is. The writing style is a little dry, but I didn't expect it to be a page-turner. My only disappointment was when I realized that over 1/4 of the book is devoted to appendices, glossary and index instead of written content.

Six comprehensive CCIE routing and switching labs to hone configuration and troubleshooting skills

Prepare for the CCIE lab exams and hone your configuration and troubleshooting skills with six complete practice scenarios that cover:

The CCIE program is designed to help individuals, companies, industries, and countries succeed in the networked world by distinguishing the top echelon of internetworking experts. CCIE candidates must not only demonstrate knowledge of a broad range of subject matter at an advanced level but also prove their ability to analyze complex problems and pose solutions in time critical settings. CCIE Routing and Switching Practice Labs provides a series of complete practice labs that mirror the difficult CCIE hands-on lab exam. Written by a CCIE program manager and a CCIE engineer, this book lays out six unique end-to-end scenarios that are both complex and realistic, providing you with the practice needed to prepare for your lab examination and develop critical-thinking skills that are essential for resolving complex, real-world routing and switching problems.

CCIE Routing and Switching Practice Labs does not waste time covering conceptual knowledge found in other manuals but focuses exclusively on six complex scenarios. The structure of each chapter is the same, covering a broad range of topics. Each chapter starts with a set of pre-lab tasks and general guidelines that outline instructions for each exercise. This is followed by the timed practice exam questions. Each chapter then wraps up with an Ask the Proctor section that provides hints and clues to the solutions and a Lab Debrief, which analyzes the answer to each question. The companion CD-ROM contains solutions for all of the labs, including configurations and common show command output from all the devices in the topology.

"This book possesses solid and practical guidance for anyone pounding away at the keyboard whether it is for the pursuit of the CCIE or the pursuit of the source of a real problem."
-Kathe Saccenti, CCIE Product Manager, Cisco Systems, Inc.

CCIE Routing and Switching Practice Labs is part of a customized learning path from Cisco Systems that includes simulation and hands-on training from authorized Cisco Learning Partners and self-study products from Cisco Press.

Companion CD-ROM
CD contains the solutions to the six complete lab scenarios in the book including configurations and show command output.

This volume is part of the Cisco Press Practical Studies Series, which offers readers a means to apply their theoretical knowledge through hands-on lab scenarios for key networking technologies. This unique approach enables readers to practice and hone their internetworking skills while preparing for Cisco certification exams.

3 out of 5 stars Some chapters obsolete.......2006-08-07

The CCIE is a moving target.

I may be stating the obvious, but before you plunk down this kind of money and spend that kind of time, you might want to check the Cisco web site and see how many chapters are still relevant. At this point the chapters on ATM and DLSw are not.

2 out of 5 stars Times have changed ...........2006-05-25

Since the CCIE R & S lab changed in January, lots of things in this book are no longer on the current exam. That includes Voice over IP, ATM, DLSW and ISDN. Given that most people don't have ATM switches or ISDN simulators in their home labs anyway, that makes a good bit of this book no longer relevent to exam prep. Pretty expensive renting an on-line rack to practice technologies not on the exam any more. It would be alot of work to re-write the labs yourself to take out the stuff no longer tested. For example, you could replace ATM pvcs with frame relay pvcs, but then you would need to redefine the solutions yourself, also.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource to test one's readiness for the CCIE lab.......2006-02-02

Cisco's CCIE Routing & Switching Lab has always been one of the most coveted certifications in the Networking industry. While CiscoPress publishes a wealth of material concerning the CCIE and the different areas of testing IGPs, BGP, QoS, security, etc..., the same cannot be written of labs to test one's knowledge of the various subjects. I feel "CCIE Routing and Switching Practice Labs" by Duggan and Gorito is an excellent reference and valiant effort by CiscoPress to resolve this gap.

I have studied most of the major 3rd party vendors study aids for the CCIE lab (InternetworkExpert, NMC, IPExpert and ccBootcamp). Even considering the 100s of labs I have studied, I believe this book does something none of the other study materials do - and that is mimic the questions that are asked on the CCIE lab. Each chapter is broken down in two areas - the test and the answers. The difficulty of the exams is not as complex as you will see on the exam - but it is close. If the CCIE had a difficulty rating of 10, I would place the difficulty of this book at about a 6 - 7 (I would place most 3rd party vendors advanced study material at an 11 - yes, harder than the real lab).

The book does have some noticeable typos, and you may have to verify your configs on GroupStudy if you are confident that your configurations are correct. For example:
-on page 50, the 2nd route-map in example of 1-40 should be set to 20, not 10.
-on page 59, example 1-60's last ACL should use 0.0.0.7, not 0.0.0.255
-on page 197, example 3-93 should include to deny tcp and udp 445 as mentioned in the first paragraph.

There are many books a CCIE candidate will need on his shelf to help attain their digits. This is the rare CiscoPress book that the candidate should use only when they are near the culmination of their studies.

4 out of 5 stars CCIE Lab Study Book.......2005-10-06

This is a good book for general practice studying and feel the format of the real test. However, difficulty and complexity level of this book are way way far under in comparision to the real test. Hope my suggestion is good for whom wants to consider this book as part of studying for CCIE lab.

Book Description

Gain hands-on experience for the CCIE Lab Exam with volume two of the best-selling CCIE Practical Studies title from Cisco Press

CCIE Practical Studies, Volume II leads CCIE candidates through the process of preparing for the CCIE lab exam by presenting them with a series of challenging laboratory exercises. A perfect companion to the best-selling first edition, this book provides coverage of CCIE lab exam topics not covered in Volume I, like the Cisco Catalyst 3550, route maps, BGP, Multicast, and QoS. Combined with Volume I, the CCIE candidate will get comprehensive coverage of the routing and switching portions of the Routing and Switching, Security, and Service Provider lab exams.

The book begins with brief coverage of the core technologies required on the CCIE lab exam and includes suggested references for further reading. Laboratory exercises covering each of the core technologies follow, providing detailed guides to applying the technologies in real network settings. The final chapter of the book concludes with five hands-on lab exercises. These comprehensive practice labs include all of the technologies and gradually increase in difficulty level. They present readers with scenarios similar to what they will face on the actual lab exam. Study tips and test-taking techniques are included throughout the book.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable resource for the CCIE R&S lab.......2006-02-04

CiscoPress's "CCIE Practical Studies - Volume II" by Solie and Lynch does a good job at preparing CCIE Routing & Switching candidates for the CCIE Lab. While this book picks up where Volume 1 left off, this volume does a much better job at both documenting and displaying some of the more advanced requirements of the lab. It is also important to note that this book should not be used to first introduce yourself to a topic. The book requires you to be familiar with the topics discussed.

The first chapter is a much needed resource on the 3550 Catalyst switch. Part 2 covers route-maps and policy-based routing. I felt the multicast section was weak but felt it was made up for in the section covering QoS. The last part is on BGP and an excellent companion to Doyle's coverage in his 2nd TCP/IP book. I would not recommend the labs at the back of the book - they are error prone.

I did find some typos or editorial errors in the book (but not nearly as many as in the first volume):

Page 389 - in the first sentence - the bandwidth should be 772 kbps - not 772 bps. There are actually multiple errors over the next few pages.

Page 566 - the last line of the first paragraph - "... then the ORIGIN value is type 3, Incomplete." The origin code is type 2 for incomplete.

Page 737 - the aggregate-address should have included the `as-set' command.

Weighing in at 1,000 pages, it will take time to properly digest this book. I'm really at a loss as to whether this is a 4 or 5 star book. But considering the depth and breadth of coverage, it is nonetheless a book that must be read before the CCIE R&S lab. Overall, I expect to find this book on many a CCIE's bookshelf.

I give this book 5 pings out of 5:

4 out of 5 stars Worth the price of admission!.......2004-05-27

I am a multiple CCIE looking for all around knowledge of subjects, including the multiple topics listed in this book. Having read the first volume in the series, I wanted to learn the tips and tricks of the authors. I can honestly say that
although this book is good and worth the read, it was not as good as the first book. There are also much better books
to read on some of the topics listed in this book (see Halabi & Parkhurst for BGP) but the authors do add good examples to their explanations.

The best part of the book is the route-filtering and the queuing chapters. The switching chapter wasn't all that bad either with a deep dive into Spanning Tree as well as the features of the 3550. I was impressed with the output of the show/debug commands which shows us that the authors actually tested their configurations and allows the reader to follow along even if they don't have real gear to test the scenarios out.

Some of the material in the book was extraneous and felt a little like filler when reading it (the chapters on ATM and the Switching modes) but those were easily outdone by the BGP topic scenarios.

The full scale labs at the end of the book were really good and tested potential candidates on core areas and would give candidates an accurate account of the type of scenarios they should know for the real world.

4 out of 5 stars CCIE Practical Studies, Volume II sets good example.......2004-03-10

CCIE Practical Studies Volume II is the latest in the CCIE Practical Studies series. This book is not just intended for individuals who have completed the CCIE written test, but for anyone who has advanced knowledge of networking theory. The book assumes you already have an understanding of routing protocols, WAN technologies, and LAN switching. Each chapter includes a section on theory but primarily focuses on the configuration aspect ending with several lab scenarios. CCIE Practical Studies Volume II includes five complete lab scenarios including the solutions on CD-ROM. These five lab scenarios are in addition to the regular labs at the end of each chapter. This book will especially appeal to those working towards their CCNP or CCIE, but also for anyone who is looking for extensive configuration examples of ethernet switching (3550), network access and propagation control, multicast routing, QOS and performance management, and advanced BGP configuration.

Karl Solie and Leah Lynch do an excellent job of providing the user with a complete set of configuration examples within each chapter. Many books on the market focus on networking theory with basic configurations added to supplement the theory. Typically, the examples in other books are not very complex or useful for real world situations. CCIE Practical Studies Volume II provides the reader with complex solutions that more closely resemble the CCIE lab exam. In addition, the examples used in the book are more practical than those used in most books on the market. The majority of the exercises are easy to follow, but as I stressed in the first paragraph you should have a more advanced knowledge to understand the complete solution.

In addition to the extensive Lab examples used throughout the book, each author has proven to write their specific chapters in a clear, consistent manner. Lynch wrote the QoS and BGP chapters consisting of the second half of the book. Although the majority of the BGP section is well written and thorough, I expected to see more details and examples in the BGP route policy chapter. As far as the other authors, the beginning of the book has a very good section on Route Maps and Policy-Based Routing. All chapters are easy to read and include additional references for further reading. I would recommend reading additional titles by either of the primary authors of this book.

In summary, Solie and Lynch wrote a solid continuation of the CCIE Practical Studies series keeping on track with the CCIE lab outline. The book did not reveal any significant amount of errors as seen in other titles preparing you for the CCIE exam. As a result, you spent less time trying to understand the examples and correcting author's mistakes and more time learning what is required to pass the exam. Although this is not the only book you should use to prepare for when practicing labs in BGP, QoS, Multicast Routing, Advanced Switching, Route Map and Policy-Based Routing, it is an excellent resource. I would rate this book a 4 out of 5 and would recommend this book as a primary source when studying for the CCIE lab exam due to its extensive lab examples and explanations.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Follow-up to Vol. I and Great Study Guide!.......2004-02-28

A CCIE candidate has to be very careful about the books he/she may select as a study guide. Most often, the two biggest problems about a CCIE study guide is either the material is extremely dated or the book itself is riddled with errors and is elementary on the topic it professes to educate the reader about. Thankfully, Karl Solie's CCIE Practical Studies Vol. II is neither of these.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of Solie's first CCIE Practical Studies. I was disappointed in other CCIE study guides, notably the earlier Hutnik/Saterlee "CCIE Lab Practice Kit". Practical Studies Vol. I, while having some dated material such as coverage of the Cat5xxx Series, provides an excellent treatment and foundation for Layer 2 protocols and IGPs. The labs at the end of the book were also of excellent quality.

I picked up CCIE Practical Studies in late December as a last minute addition to my CCIE prep library. I was scheduled to take the lab in February, and I anxiously awaited arrival. Needless to say, I was not disappointed! CCIE Practical Studies Vol. II coverage begins where Vol. I left off. The topics of focus include the Cat3550s, route-maps, multicast, and BGP. I found the chapters on BGP especially helpful. Upon completion of these chapters and labs, I had a much better grasp on BGP and the protocol's bells, whistles, and knobs. The appendix includes a great piece on prefix lists, an absolute must for any CCIE candidate. Finally, the labs at the end of the book were terrific, on par to many of the various "boot camp labs" available for purchase.

If I must provide one negative, it is that the author was inconsistent on providing IOS requirements needed to complete the labs. Sometimes Solie was kind enough to let me know I needed 12.2(T) or 12.3, and other times it was overlooked. As a result, during one lab, I needed to upgrade my IOS code and swap a router in the middle of my practice. A pain but, certainly not the end of the world.

As for my lab, I passed on February 26, 2004, CCIE #12932. I firmly believe that I would not have passed if not for Solie's wonderful treatment of BGP in CCIE Practical Studies Vol. II!

3 out of 5 stars Practical Studies Volume 2 (a path toward CCIE certification.......2004-02-10

CCIE Practical Studies, Volume II (Karl Solie & Leah Lynch) shows CCIE candidates a process for CCIE lab exam preparation. A good book to be read along with Volume I of the same tittle provides coverage of CCIE lab exam topics not covered in Volume I: route maps, BGP, QoS, and Multicast. Together with Volume I, the CCIE candidate experiences comprehensive coverage of the Routing & Switching, Security, and Service Provider labs. This book is recommended by CCIE training groups such as NLI & IPExpert.

Summary: What I liked about the book. It is very detailed and includes practice labs. Because of its in depth detailed coverage of topics such as Route Maps, it will likely remain a source of reference for the next 10 years.

Where the book could be improved. After passing the written test many candidates want to take the theory and apply it to some practical purpose: such as how to pass the lab and with the maximum confidence and skill possible. Sorting through all the theory for the commands that will be necessary can be tedious. Additionally, many CCIE books mention very little concerning how to go about acquiring your own lab equipment: ISDN simulator, using a 1750 for voice vs. purchasing voice modules; yet, the R&S CCIE page suggests that this is likely the most important process ie. `hands on preparation.`

If the reader is looking for loads of information concerning BGP, Route Maps, etc this book is the answer; however, if you have already passed the written test and are preparing for the lab it may be better to spend time on actually configuring your own network equipment that you have already purchased on ebay at a discounted price. Somewhere I noticed that a reader had cruised through this fine text in 2 evenings. At close to 900 pages it could take 2 days just to page through it... reading & comprehending the very detailed concepts should take most mortals much much longer.

Conclusion: Overall I recommend the book as a neccessary desktop reference in companion with Volume 1 and along with Doyle`s TCP/IP, and an R&S config book by IPEXPERT. Sometimes less is more & while I would like to know everything about the world and also networking, for the CCIE lab I am mostly concerned with which commands are neccessary to get the darn thing working & also, how to interpret tricky vague questions that may require disabling `inverse arp` for instance. Likely, becoming intimate with practice labs is the best solution in conjunction with owning as much lab equipment as you can afford.

    Book Description

The objective of this book is to outline the best practice in designing, installing, commissioning and troubleshooting industrial data communications systems. In any given plant, factory or installation there are a myriad of different industrial communications standards used and the key to successful implementation is the degree to which the entire system integrates and works together.

With so many different standards on the market today, the debate is not about what is the best - be it Foundation Fieldbus, Profibus, Devicenet or Industrial Ethernet but rather about selecting the most appropriate technologies and standards for a given application and then ensuring that best practice is followed in designing, installing and commissioning the data communications links to ensure they run fault-free. The industrial data communications systems in your plant underpin your entire operation. It is critical that you apply best practice in designing, installing and fixing any problems that may occur. This book distills all the tips and tricks with the benefit of many years of experience and gives the best proven practices to follow.

The main steps in using today's communications technologies involve selecting the correct technology and standards for your plant based on your requirements; doing the design of the overall system; installing the cabling and then commissioning the system. Fiber Optic cabling is generally accepted as the best approach for physical communications but there are obviously areas where you will be forced to use copper wiring and, indeed, wireless communications. This book outlines the critical rules followed in installing the data communications physical transport media and then ensuring that the installation will be trouble-free for years to come.

The important point to make is that with todays wide range of protocols available, you only need to know how to select, install and maintain them in the most cost-effective manner for your plant or factory - knowledge of the minute details of the protocols is not necessary.

1 out of 5 stars A Practical Guide to CRM.......2006-02-25

Redundant reference to nearly every main point. This book could easily have been one third the length and twice as effective if the author had been concise.

    5 out of 5 stars A hearty Recommendation.......2002-07-31

The author has clearly explained CRM, its premise, it application within the workplace, and its components, processes and technical underpinnings. The book provides the reader with a coherent definition and then backs it up with a CRM action plan that provides a distinct link to business essentials within the scope of a concise understanding of the broad range of processes that it takes to implement CRM. The author does a great job of explaining the necessity of bringing together the business, its processes and technology and does so in a very down to earth manner (no technospeak). The book then provides the reader with a very clear diagram of what is needed to bring a specific CRM application to fruition.

This book provides a very balanced picture of CRM. So if you need to understand CRM, its value, how it relates to business processes and what it takes to implement it, this book is for you. The checklists are invaluable and it gives you basically everything needed for a successful CRM implementation.

5 out of 5 stars There are Many Reasons to Buy this Book.......2002-07-20

The book should be on the reference shelf of any manager or executive contemplating, implementing or working with CRM since it does a wonderful job of covering the business issues and technical parameters and requirements of CRM. For example, the author goes into considerable detail about how and why CRM is important to meeting business requirements and devotes many pages to the vendor and partner selection process. Furthermore, the book covers CRM from not only the IT viewpoint, but also from the departmental manager and executive office's perspective. I think it would be hard to find a book with a more comprehensive road map to CRM. Yet, the book is an easy read.

5 out of 5 stars Should be on every Business Executive's Reading List.......2002-05-18

If you're involved in CRM, or are in a company that is considering CRM then this book should be your CRM Bible. It provides a thorough, well-organized treatise on all aspects of CRM. The author not only provides a full explanation of what CRM is and what CRM IS NOT, she also walks the reader through planning a business case, dealing with the human element, planning stages, project management and finally implementation. Every section is thoroughly covered, from RFP to vendor selection to outsourcing.

This book gives you an amazing jump start in socket programming, the language is very easy to understand and very clear.

    All the examples just work!.

My only concern was that this book does not cover unix domain sockets and link layer sockets such as AF_LOCAL and AF_LINK.

I strongly recommend buying this book.

Before I got this book I thought writing C programs, that interfaced with TCP/IP sockets, was hard, but with this book in ones reach nothing could be simpler. With the help of this book and the HTTP Pocket Reference: Hypertext Transfer Protocol I was able to write a simple Web server.

The way book gives you the sample codes as complete listing and afterwards dissecting it line by line worked for me.

As a self taught programmer who formalized his hip-pocket knowledege with a formal degree in Semi-Conductor Physics and Applied Electrical Engineering, I still appreciate a easy to read and understandable treatise on any programming subject. This little book is packed full of relevent information and programming snippets to aid even the most basic of programmers. Sometimes even the multi-degreed can be taught or refreshed in a subject. These authors provide a lot of information in a small form factor. It is concise and I recommend it to anyone who wishes to learn or relearn the programming of TCP/IP sockets.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Supplement.......2006-05-02

This is a great book if you are looking for a decent introduction to the Sockets API or just a quick reference. Prior knowledge of C programming and networking concepts is required. It is very easy to read, and not overwhelming like the Stevens book. It covers TCP and UDP sockets as well as name resolution. Money well spent.

    5 out of 5 stars Good service.......2005-09-26

This was my first shop at Amazon and I had lot of expectations.
I can happily say tell that I am very happy with the service provided by Amazon.com . This is why people should trust great companies.

    Anyway, ...

The is in excellent quality. It is a good start for anyone who has knowledge of C (or perhaps of C++) language and wants to learn about networking. Good explanations of the functionalities.

    I am satisfied.
