Book Description

MCSE in a nutshell. Targeted, focused books that a professional can carry around to study for their upcoming exam(s).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars No better study guide available........2000-09-13

This book lives up to all its good reviews. Guarantee yourself a better grade by using it. It is exactly what it says, a "Study Guide". Although you may pass the exam with just this book, I recommend learning the material in a lengthier manner. Either take the instructor-led courses or buy the Microsoft training kits (I bought the kits), and then read this book just before you take the exam, using it as a "Study Guide". I passed the exam by a wide margin on my first attempt.

1 out of 5 stars BEWARE:If you bought the Enterprise book DON'T BUY THIS ONE!.......1999-12-14

Kinnaman has written truly great books that will prepare you for the MCSE exams, but this book IS A VIRTUAL COPY OF THE ENTERPRISE BOOK. Kinnaman tries to cover this up by adding a phrase here and there to sentences, but the book is essentially the same. This begs the question, are the Server and the Server in the Enterprise exams so similar that one can write the same book as a study guide for both? The reason I gave this book one star, even though it may sufficiently prepare you for the Server exam, is that I think either Kinnaman or the publisher (or both) was (were) dishonest in not coming out with a Server/Enterprise combination book, that simply included the few chapters that don't appear in both books into one study guide. He (They) are trying to rip you off.

PS: Can someone write another review that lists the chapters that differ between the Server and the Server in the Enterprise books?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......1999-07-04

If you want to pass the MCP on NT Server 4.0, I highly recommend this book to you.

5 out of 5 stars This is the only book you will need to pass exam 70-067........1999-03-12

There is only one way to say this: This book was awesome!!! The authors target what you should know and what to watch for on the exam. I have tried various other books on the MCSE subjects and have found the Accelerated MCSE study guides to be the best. I read the entire book in two days and passed the exam the next day. The book places all its emphasis on what you need and should know, not only to pass the exam, but to be a succesful MCSE. I am recommending the entire set of these books to my friends and colleagues. Simply stated, Accelerated MCSE study Guides are your one stop shop for success. Don't get lost in all the fancy wording the other books hit you with, read something you can read! Trust me, once you pick it up, you won't wamt to put it down. Once I read this book, everything made sense.

5 out of 5 stars What the author thinks about the Windows NT Server Exam:.......1999-03-09

Trounce the Windows NT 4.0 Server Exam

The Windows NT 4.0 Server exam concentrates on Windows NT architecture, disk management, Windows NT domain structures, installation and configuration details and hard to find facts about Control Panel applets, DHCP, DNS, WINS, RAS, security, policies, profiles, optimization and NetWare connectivity. Experts know that the official Microsoft Preparation Guide points the direction to every single question on the exam. That's why we wrote the Accelerated MCSE Windows NT Server 4.0 Study Guide based squarely on the official Microsoft Preparation Guide - every single exam objective is covered at the exact level of detail that the real exam requires. Study based on the Microsoft Preparation Guide is the most efficient and reliable way to prepare for Microsoft MCSE exams. This small book completely prepares you for the Server exam.

Icons Identify Test Objectives

The Accelerated MCSE Windows NT 4.0 Server Study Guide is especially designed to help you pass the new adaptive Server exam. Our book is full of insider tips and tested methods to save you time and expense while you plan, prepare and pass the exam the first time. Throughout the book vital information is carefully highlighted, and special icons allow you to concentrate your studies on one or more Preparation Guide objective(s), based on any "low" scores on preliminary and practice exams.

Bonus Crib Notes

I must admit that the hardest part of the book to write was the concise removable sheet of quick reference "crib notes." These distilled key facts are perfect for your final review before the exam, and for an overview when you begin your Server study. Remember, this compact study guide gives you only the most essential information and the most effective learning strategies - we just don't waste your time on irrelevant stuff that's not on the test.

Accelerated To Save You Time and Money

Based on our experience personally passing the Windows NT 4.0 Server exam the first time, we designed this book to make your studying and learning easy. We provide you with all of the up to date, essential information you need to understand the exam terminology and to pass the exam. Each chapter has a complete summary to help you with last minute studying, memory jogging, and to focus your review on the most important tested facts. Our end-of-chapter reviews are designed especially to give you a sizzling hotlist of concepts critical to passing this one exam.

MCSE Myths and Tough Questions Explained

The Accelerated MCSE Windows NT 4.0 Server Study Guide begins with special sections of proven test-taking strategies and time saving MCSE preparation tips. You can study with confidence once you have our methods to learn quickly and our warnings about pitfalls and myths to avoid. Each kind of possible question is explained and clarified. Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Windows NT Server 4.0 in the Enterprise.......2000-11-05

This book is a re-hash of Carter's earlier book - WINDOWS NT 4.0 The 22 chapters in this book are word for word identical to the earlier WINDOWS NT 4.0. Although this earlier is more expensive, it is well worth the difference in price as it has 6 chapters not included in the newer Server in the Enterprise book. If you have previously purchased WINDOWS NT 4.0, don't buy Server in the Enterprise. Carter's WINDOWS NT 4.0 is an excellent book and a "must-have" reference covering Server, Workstation and Enterprise.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent study guide for exam.......2000-08-15

The only reason I did not rate 5 stars is that the questions while good, do not accurately reflect the exam material in some instances.

The material itself is well presented, follows a logical pattern, and is complete for exam purposes. This book will not make you an NT guru, but is quite adequate for the exam.

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed.......1999-12-14

This book is absolute rubbish. A total waste of money. I am very disappointed. It is more like a "how to use.." book than a preparation for the exam and does not really go into any depth on the Enterprise side of Windows NT. If you already know how to use Windows NT Server, and just want to prepare for the exam then buy a different book!

5 out of 5 stars Pass the exam with 743.......1999-12-08

This is an easy to read great with information book and highly recommend it. I did all of the lab exercises and studyied the chapters very well. Chapter 10 on Trusts and Chapter 21 on Optomizing Directories should be read twice because the test really hits this section hard. I used transcenders and scored over 725 on each of the tests which is an indication on how well this book prepare's the reader for the test. Technical reading is usually boring but this book is very easy to understand and would highly recommend if you are going to take the test.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Students have loved it for Two Years Now!.......2000-04-26

I have been an Administrator in this industry for several years and have used various books for very tasks. I have been teaching for three years and my students and I have found this book to be the best written for the classroom. My students have said "thank you" for choosing this book for two years running now. I look forward to the series on 2000 Server.

4 out of 5 stars Straight-forward answers.......2000-03-26

This was a very comprehensive book. It was easy to follow and the answers to the chapter reviews were easy to pull from the chapter. I did not have to read, and reread, and reread the chapter looking for a non-existent answer, as I have had to do in some books in the MCSE track. I only wish the textbooks that are being used at my school were all written by this author.

1 out of 5 stars yuk........2000-01-29

One of the worst. . . a big waste of your time. We convinced our dept. to drop both this book and Ed Tittel's.

1 out of 5 stars 1 would save my money.......1999-12-08

I think this is one of the worst computer text book I had the miss-pleasure to read in my 25 years as a computer professional.

Some specifics: The book is biased towards presenting and supporting Microsoft interests. Historical facts are either left out to present a rosier picture for Microsoft, or the writer is outright incompetent. Important information / or that will correctly answer questions at the end of each chapter is buried within a verbose style that will put even the most diligent among us to sleep. In all honesty I can say that I found only two pages of the 640 that held my interest (397-398), and those had nothing to do with Microsoft or the NT 4.0 server.

3 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, not well organized, occassionally redundant.......1998-11-25

Summary pretty much sums it up. It was very comprehensive, but not well organized. It had similar material spread out. More tables would have helped. Also, certain key words were not bolded or included in the chapter end in the keywords section. Instead of CD it had a floppy disk which I actually considered an advantage because the sample test files were text files which could be printed for easier study and access. The sample test did not always give complete answers however. The graphics were pretty good but not thorough enough. The index needs to be more thorough also, but was adequate. The chapter quizes were good, but too simplistic for doing any good on the certification. It was about the best book on the market unfortunately.

2 out of 5 stars Covers the very basics and not much more.......2000-02-04

Mr. Gonsalves' book provides the most basic information on Windows NT 4 Server Security. If are somewhat familiar with NT already, then you may want to pass on this book for a more detailed book. Mr. Gonsalves also writes as if he were an employee of Microsoft or a Microsoft cheerleader. The book does not offer a critical assessment of Windows NT security and often fails to point out shortcomings.

5 out of 5 stars Only book comparing NT with Novell and Unix security.......1999-01-02

The book provides great insight on NT security, including access controls and registry. It's the only book I know comparing Novell and Unix security.

4 out of 5 stars This exam guide is JUST RIGHT.......2000-07-11

Ever bought study guides or "Unleashed" type books and found them to just meander through topics, with lots of pages wasted on topics you know that YOU shouldn't be wasting your time on? Well, I have seen or bought far too many of them before buying this one from Amazon.com. Every page counted, and no space was wasted. I was extremely pleased with it's excellent organization, readability, balance, and, of course, content. Scored an 833, and the questions I missed were covered in the book -- I just, uh, forgot them. There are a few small errors in the book, but when you start spotting them, you'll know you're getting ready to pass an exam. In addition to preparing me for the certification exam, troubleshooting information contained in the book has saved my 11-person IT staff hundreds of hours administrating an NT network with 400 workstations. If there's any question in your mind as to which book to buy first to pass the NT Server exam, consider it answered. Spend any extra money on Exam Cram, and you WILL be a Microsoft Certified Professional. Good luck!

          1 out of 5 stars a completely irresponsible publication.......2000-02-12

You'd expect a book that sells itself specifically as an exam prep book to present information accurately. Unfortunately, this book is so full of inaccuracies and missing information that it's hard to imagine anyone successfully passing the exam based on the information in this book. One example: chapter 2 mentions hashing, and explains that it's used on FAT partitions, but doesn't describe the hashing algorithm. In the chapter summary, they say to expect a couple of hashing questions on the exam. In the review questions, they ask you to hash five file names, and when you turn to the answers in the back of the book, ALL FIVE are done wrong! A breathtaking example of ineptitude! On and on it rambles, with useless diagrams, missing information, skipping over important concepts and emphasizing unimportant ones. On the plus side, it's well written, and easy to follow. This is a book that cries for a proof-reader.

2 out of 5 stars Lots of broken links in the "Interactive Study Section".......1999-11-03

There is an Interactive Self Study Section which comes with the CD-ROM. The idea is good but it is not "Interactive" at all. You suppose to click a correct answer from the question and it will link you to the next one. However, I find it hard to believe that many times, I had been linked to some pages that have nothing to do with the questions itself at all. They should check it before published that book. I paid good money for a "good book", not a "lost in space" game.

4 out of 5 stars Hits most topics tested........1999-06-24

This book does a good job of hitting most of the tested topics. However, like the Sybex guide, some objectives lack depth.

Questions at end of chapters are not exam like, but do a good job of testing your understanding of each chapter. A good guide to estimate if your studying is working.

Toss the CD... and use the net to get sample tests.

Would buy it again. Similar to the Sybex study guide. (I've read both).

5 out of 5 stars The best of all self-ed books I have read........1999-02-17

This book is written in a detail that makes it easier to understand the topic. Much better than other publishers' books. Fewer errors. I passed the test on the first attempt using this book.

Osborne's MCSE Windows NT Server 4.0 in the Enterprise Study Guide is a thorough and able study guide for one of the core Microsoft Certified Software Engineer (MCSE) exams. The Enterprise exam covers NT 4 implementation and administration in an enterprise- wide system, where an enterprise is a multiserver or, potentially, a multidomain structure served across a local area network (LAN) or a wide area network (WAN).

This well-written guide can also act as a basic introduction to Windows NT Server 4.0. Based on a training series established by the Global Knowledge Network, this book covers step-by-step basics of the concepts needed to pass the exam. The book provides hints and sample tests throughout. Two-minute drills at the end of each chapter allow you to quickly review the material. You can also follow the various examples to get some hands-on training.

The included CD-ROM contains an HTML version of the book and electronic sample tests. The interactive self-test and the links after each sample question to the relevant sections of the book are especially helpful. Instead of searching for reasons that an answer is wrong, you are able to click on the review link.

After reading this book, you should be able to understand the underlying NT concepts and be able to begin basic administration tasks--and, of course, you should be able to pass the test. For more in-depth knowledge of very specific areas of NT, other books should be sought out, as this book retains a tight focus on preparing you for the test. Of the many certification guides, this one is a good choice. --Jim Allen

1 out of 5 stars Save your money.......1999-11-15

It's tooo simplistic. Very few things are explained well, especially TCP/IP and subnet masks. Although it's not a specific MCSE book, I found Mark Minasi's book on NT Networking (Server?), more thorough and understandable.

I hope the CD is of more help in passing this test.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book and series........1999-08-03

All the Osbourne-McGrawHill MCSE books are outstanding! I already had Microsoft product experience and was able to pass all the MCSE exams in 3 weeks with these books. They're great!

4 out of 5 stars A good choice for this exam........1999-06-24

Having read 3 study guides for this exam,

          This one is ranked #2.

A good choice... but I wouldn't try to pass the exam using only this one study guide.

2 out of 5 stars TOO MANY ERRORS!!!!.......1999-04-21

I found this book contained too many errors. Example is regedit not regedit32 is used to search the registry. Also the hyperlinks on the CD, if they worked at all, went to the wrong location. I received no response from the inquiries I posted at their web site. As a result of this experience, I will never purchase a Syngress Media book again. I found Newriders to be a better study guide.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the money.......1999-03-20

This book has excellent resources to study for the Exam. But you still need to know you stuffs from experience or from knowing this things. You can't pass the exam just from studying one book, unless you already know your materials. Else, you need more than one book. Excellent source of book.
