Customer Reviews:
Not for beginners, lacks vital information reguarding FAT32........1999-10-07
The book needs to be updated to include FAT32 as well as new technologies since it's release in June of 97'. The book is being used as a Text by the Tech school I'm attending. The combination of the book being outdated and an unknowledgable instructor caused an entire networking class to waist four, five hour classes (20 hrs;1/2 a work week) trying to install NT WS & NT server as single OSs. The book claims to be "for every user" which includes the "beginner" but I find that it does not give enough detail when explaining setups and configurations. If you are a beginner this is not the only NT book you will need unless you have the help of knowledgable peers. Our pages are also coming out of every book purchased by the school. For the sake of others I sincerly hope the publisher will update soon. If they are going to say it is for beginners they must give more detail.
Extremely Good Reference........1999-08-02
After using this book for about a year I've decided it is the one I turn to the most for understanding NT 4 Server.
The author is quite articulate and does a fine job of presenting the material. Hopefully, he will have more books coming out real soon.
I find that I can quickly drill down to the topic and subject I'm interested in, and not get bogged down in useless theory or 99,000 ft. level overviews that lack substance (like those unleashed books).
I have taped the book binding for the 3rd time just so I can keep using it.
Thanks to the author! Highly Recommended.

With dry humor and clear competence that will appeal to skilled users, John Paul Mueller walks the reader through Windows NT Workstation 4.0 basics. He then gets right into the details of how Windows NT deals with memory, accesses data on disk, writes visual information to the screen, and performs a score of other low-level tasks. You'll find outstanding coverage of both peer-to-peer and client-server networking. But perhaps the most useful section is in the second half of the book, where Mueller details performance tweaks for both hardware and software. "Peter's Principle" sidebars throughout give useful power-user tips, such as making a shortcut to your Startup folder so you can fill it at quitting time with whatever you want to have open when you start your computer again. The book does not include a CD-ROM but there is a useful four-page pull-out command reference. Peter Norton's Complete Guide to Windows NT 4 Workstation, Premier Edition, doesn't aim to provide the detailed information that some other administrators' references offer, but it is a fine choice for knowledgeable users who want to tune their computers for speedy and smart operation.
Customer Reviews:
Great reference with practical experience.......2001-02-06
A great reference book filled with tips & tricks that are based upon real-world practical experiences. Like most Norton products, this book is "complete" and is a pleasant change of pace from other books that talk about "theory" and pay little attention to "experience."
A must read for computer folks that use and work with NT Workstation.
too complex for freshers.......1999-10-16
i made a mistake by buying this book. too complex for starters. nothing is explained in detail. More description is given on the networking concepts than on the OS(WIN NT4). i would not recommend this book to anybody, there are better books on NT4.
Some false information given..........1999-03-19
I want to be clear that I am speeking specifically about information given in chapter one regarding windows 95. The author claimes that Win 95 is not dependent upon DOS, which is totaly false. Win95 and Win98 do, indeed, run on top of DOS which accounts for the backward compatability. Windows NT (New Technology) makes a clean break from DOS. Additionally, the book mentions problems with WinNT repeatedly but fails to point out that none of the problems associated with WinNT are present in Linux.
This book is not that useful.......1999-01-15
This book is on the surface. It is unlikely that you would find something in this book when you are faced with a real life situation
Devoid of any useful content.......1998-02-27
I read this book hoping to find some help on a variety of Nt issues ranging from scripting to hardware installation. The book talks at great length about how neat Nt is, but gives little useful information on using or configuring Nt.

Book Description
This box includes the two premier Windows NT books on the market. Mark Minasi's Mastering Windows NT Server was NT's first CLASSIC book. This #1 best-selling title was the first book to explain how to make NT work in an enterprise network, coexisting with current Novell and IBM-based networks. The second book, 1,100-page Mastering Windows Workstation 4, extends Minasi's authoritative voice and readable style to the users of NT Workstation. The first section of the book covers the essential topics, while advanced sections show the reader how to tap NT's enormous power--networking, scheduling, communications, and system-control applications.

Customer Reviews:
A book worth every penny.......2000-05-04
Of course it's not perfect, but its cheap! I just wish I could have read this before I spent £100's on other Windows NT doorstops.
This volume from Sybex covers most of what any beginner would need to know to understand the rudiments of NT and answers a lot of useful questions for those beyond beginer grade.
I would have prefered more focus on NT4 workstation, and I fail to understand the extensive coverage of IE4 which was buggy and short lived. But I learned enough about NT, networking and troubleshooting to make the spend worthwhile. A very good introductory text which surpasses by far the usual 'idiot style beginners books' to be more of an in-depth text without overkill.
Highly readable and recommended.
useful overview.......2000-04-17
This book gives you much information at low cost, as you know. It is composed of introduction, overview, very practical contents and more. If you are new to server networking, buy this book first, then other professional books. It is comfortable size and softcover like a novel.

Customer Reviews:
Useless.......2000-01-21
After having this book (1st ed.) on my shelf for several years, I am compelled to write a review. This book seldom provides answers to any of my NT questions. Recently, after installing a remote disk drive, I encountered a STOP error (fatal error) upon startup. The error message said something about an IRQ problem. The only mention of IRQ in the book's index refers to a single paragraph in the glossary. There was nothing on errors, debugging, system errors, dump files, log files ... anything that would help me understand the problem. This has been my experience every time I open this book. It more likely to infuriate than to inform. However, at nearly 900 pages it does make a good bookend.
It's easy to understand Norton.......1999-10-19
I've used this book over the years with enthusiasm. Even though it is somewhat out of date, Norton's books, as always, make it easy to understand what he has to say.

Customer Reviews:
Great for studying at home!.......1999-04-12
The MCSE CBT gave me everything I needed to get my MCSE Certification. The best part of the CBT is the Simulation exercises. Since I wasn't able to attend classroom MCSE training, I was glad to use the simulator at home and learn hands-on Windows NT commands. The simulations also paid off when I went for the Microsoft exams. I also liked the TestMaster software for exam preparation. I saw many of the questions on the Microsoft exams and I passed them all. If you can't make classes at a training school, this is the way to go.
Not a good value at $999.......1998-11-20
Although Amazon offers this CBT at almost $300 less than buying direct, PC Age does not justify $1000 for this CBT that is low on features like printing, keyboard functions, etc. I have also purchased SYBEX and MS Press study kits, a much better investment. Difficult to navigate through this training and the only thing that you can print is your test score. The tests lack clarity and accuracy. Many sources out there for less money. This CBT is the equivalent of a PowerPoint presentation with NO print functions.
Look at other options first. Definitely not $1000 worth........1998-11-13
I was not impressed for $1000 worth of trainings. EXTREMELY disappointed with format. PC Age uses a "Blackboard" graphic, like elementary school to display not much more than a powerpoint presentation. What's more? Want to print any of this $1000 material? NOT AN OPTION! I could have grabbed my SYBEX books and put together a POWERPOINT demo for much less. Also, ALL of the scrolling requires that you use your mouse (at least in the training section) with NO keyboard functions. My biggest complaint is that nothing is printable and for $1000, I would like to print some of the material. To make matters worse, you can't even CUT and PASTE the text. Security?? Piracy?? Whatever the reason, it makes studying not to enjoyable. The material is OK. The simulated tests are very loosely worded and many with incorrect answers. It does a good job of explaining the correct answers (many times you have chosen the correct answer and the question is still wrong but, it WILL explain the correct answer) Overall, I would not pay more than $149 for this same material. Go with SYBEX or New Riders or even the Microsoft Press series (all are GREAT values for the dollar). Make your own presentation with Powerpoint. Make flashcards. Save your $$$.
