Book Description
How to Cheat at Windows Systems Administrators using Command line scripts teaches system administrators hundreds of powerful, time-saving tips for automating daily system administration tasks using Windows command line scripts.
With every new version of Windows, Microsoft is trying to ease the administration jobs by adding more and more layers of graphical user interface (GUI) or configuration wizards (dialog boxes). While these wizards are interactive and make the administrators job easier, they are not always the most convenient and efficient way to accomplish the everyday administration tasks. These wizards are time consuming and, at times, may seem a bit confusing. The purpose of the book is to teach administrators how to use command-line scripts to complete everyday administration jobs, solve recurring network problems and at the same time improve their efficiency.
*Provides system administrators with hundreds of tips, tricks, and scripts to complete administration tasks more quickly and efficiently.
*No direct competition for a core tool for Windows administrators.
*Builds on success of other books in the series including How to Cheat at Managing Windows Small Business Server 2003 and How to Cheat at Managing Microsoft Operations Manager 2005.

Discover the Windows command line.......2006-10-07
"There's more than one way to skin a cat", as the old saying goes.
Everything, and more, that can be done using the graphical, mouse-driven, interfaces provided by Windows, can be accomplished by using the command-line. What's more, these tasks can get scripted and be automated!
This book covers the basics of the command-line and how to go about writing batch files (or scripts).
After these fundamentals are covered, commands in various areas of system, domain and network administration are discussed. From configuring and using the task-scheduler, to performance, to managing disks, to AD administration, to network trouble-shooting, one is ready to tackle any administrative task from the command line.
The book also contains a very handy Appendix for those MS-DOS old-timers amongst us. The Appendix covers the MS-DOS commands no longer supported in Windows XP and those not supported in Windows 2003.
A final note is that this book was written with Windows XP and Windows 2003 in mind.

The Most Advance, Insightful, C# Control Book On The Market........2005-09-16
This book rocks!!! I've just purchased the ebook version, and I must say that after spending several days searching through bookstores and the web, this has got to be the most insightful book on reusable control development on the market (In the .NET Arena!!!).
As this book covers all elements of control development, I can definitely advise any developer looking to deliver professional user controls that this book is a must have.
Well done to the author for bypassing the publishers. It's about time developers had immediate access to downloadable versions of the books after purchase.
As a reader from the UK, I must point out that this title was not available via the Amazon.co.uk web site, but that's another matter
Good subject, very bad book........2004-06-08
This has to be the worst book I have ever bought. Poor explaining & a lot of errors in the code.
Not as good as I had hoped.......2004-03-28
I'm only four chapters through this book, and already I am having difficulty. I am an intermediate programmer who has been programming my own custom controls for months with limited success, hence my interest in the title.
One instance of difficulty is that the example given in chapetr 3 doesn't work. When I looked at the author's downloadable sample code and compared it to the code in the book, I found that he implemented 2 other functions not implemented in the book. However, it made no difference at runtime, the code still did not work as intended. Then the author got into UITypeEditors. He introduces terms without fully explaining what they mean (of course, they can easily be looked up on MSDN, but what's the problem with quickly explaining them in a paragraph or two??). He quickly jumps from one topic to another within this section of the chapter and just dumps code on you. So much so, I feel like I just got picked up by a tornado and dropped 15 miles away!
While I look forward to reading the rest of the book to try and get what I can out of it, I agree with other reviewers that you are still going to need to read as much as you can from the MSDN (what little there is there) as well as other sources that may be available on the web, and of course, you're going to have to tinker around to really learn anything substantial. However, having said that, this is only one of two books devoted to custom control development (the other being .Net Windows Forms Custom Controls by Richard L. Weeks, which is better in my opinion, but still not the greatest.).
The long and short of it is, anything at all is a help, but you're going to have to read other sources and just plain old play with code on your own. Apparently, there does not exist one comprehensive book that will get you on your way. Yes boys and girls, there will be homework tonight, and a lot of it, so happy reading. And your final project is due YESTERDAY!
***
I finished reading this book. It only took two days! The author stopped trying to write after the second chapter!! This book is horrible. If you want a paperback version of the MSDN, then this book is for you, otherwise, don't waste your time or money on it.
Great book but definitely not for the beginner........2003-10-10
I've been developing custom controls in C# for 3 months now after developing custom Java controls for years. I must say initially that this book was not much help. If you need a real beginner book that holds your hand step by step buy Petzold. However, after delving into the intricacies of Windows Forms you'll definitely find this book useful. The OutlookTab example in this book invaluable. It's a real world example and the author tackles some of the more advanced development topics. I agree with other reviewers that this book is not as clear as you would hope. Also you will definitely still need to read the MSDN docs and probably look at the some disassembly to get a good grasp of developing your own custom controls.
Control design.......2003-09-12
Content and topics covered in the book are good, especially
a lot pages talking on designer. But it lacks small and complete examples like presented in other books that help to understand. Finally it presented an big example that has too many codes to read.

it is all about Portals.......2005-12-01
The title mentions portals, intranets and corporate web sites. But the emphasis in the text is clearly on portals. Where perhaps these might be regarded as special types of corporate web sites.
Townsend divides his book into two sections. The first deals mostly at the functional level. By defining what 'portal' means in this book. This functionality also includes the optional but probably preferred offering of a Web Service. He points out that many current portals lack this. Yet it seems the way to go. The promise is that a portal becomes more than just a collection of web pages for manual perusal by the visitor. If you furnish a Web Service, it permits the programmatic aggregation of services, by other entities on the Internet. Townsend devotes some space to showing how this is possible under .NET. Not in the least because Microsoft has standardised on using XML as the lingua franca for formatting data passed between .NET entities on a network.
The second section of the text delves into an implementation of this functionality. It describes the numerous Microsoft offerings, like the Content Management Server or the SQL Server 2000, and how these can be stitched together into a portal. Everything in this section is specific to Microsoft. While the first section can be read as a general description of portals.
Finally a book that ties all these products together.......2004-07-30
As a long-time user of Microsoft products, I have found the array and depth of the various products overwhelming and needed a comprehensive yet easy to understand presentation of the key parts of these products and how they can be used within a portal implementation. While the code fragments were far too technical for me, the rest of the book was very approachable and well worth the time investment to read. I strongly recommend this for all CIOs or people responsible for technical architecture and direction.
Broad in scope and audience.......2004-06-25
While most technology books either pander to Luddite executives or deliver pages of code to professional developers, _Building Portals_ is that rare breed, a tech book with content for managers and architects and developers. Townsend has done a great job capturing the spirit of portals and answering the hardest two questions: "What is a portal" and "What does it do". I passed a dog-earned copy around to some tech-challenged coworkers and it was very well received.
Good topic idea but ..........2004-06-18
This book explains the concept of portals and how Microsoft enterprise servers handle and implement the features that goes into a portal. The book is written by 3 authors and unfortunately the different writing styles and depth of the subject show.
For example in Chapter 8 Personalization, there is only one page on personalization with Content Management Server. Most of the content in it concentrates on how to do caching in a personalized setting without explaining how to do personalization with CMS in the first place.
In Chapter 5 Portal Framework, it details line by line codes on how to write a portal site in VB.Net. While the code is good, it is too technical compared with the rest of the book. I rather see code snippets on how to build some common components in a portal site instead of a portal application. It is a bit difficult to extract out the code you need as everything is tied together in the architecture. BTW, there is no CD in the book and no hyperlink is mentioned on where to download the source code.
The book has an entire chapter on Content Management Server. It also covers Commerce Server and SharePoint Portal Server quite well and gives a brief overview on BizTalk and InfoPath. I rather see more technical emphasis on how to integrate the different servers than having screenshots of numerous dialogs explaining what each of the fields does.
Finally the book retails at $50 which is far too expensive. It should be around $35 instead.

Excellent Overview.......2004-06-26
This is a great book cover to cover. For the admin who has never participated in an Active Directory roll out this book is a must have. The chapters quickly familiarize you the most powerful aspects of Active Directory without much repetitiveness. This is an excellent book for those wanting an overview or for a beginner with Active Directory. Well worth the purchase price.
One of the best on Active Directory.......2003-10-28
Hudson and Fullerton definately come through in their presentation of Active Directory! Their clear and concise approach, drawing from their experience in training and consulting shines through! I am in the process of upgrading the network where I now work from Windows NT and this book is an invaluable resource!
Very good book!.......2003-02-23
The authors have done a very good jobs of explaining several complex matters. More importantly, the authors have clearly shown that they have trenmendous amount of real-world experiece. It's good to know that we still have some authors like that instead of too many professional writers, who have no real world experience and who just paraphase what M$ says about their product on the online help.
Thanks.
Tam T. Nguyen, MCSE
An Excellent Reference and How-To for Active Directory.......2001-07-11
This book is very helpful if you are planning a Windows 2000 Active Directory design or already have one and need to get the most out of your AD. The authors have organized the book very well making it easy to find the information you need. The book is very useful as a quick reference. Additionally, material is presented in a logical order making it easily readable cover-to-cover if you need a comprehesive understanding of AD.
The authors stress the importance of a solid DNS design and drive home the point just how critical DNS is for good AD operation. There is a good description of forests, trees, and domains as well as much helpful information on planning sites and site replication. The book also goes into detail on printers and scripting.
I found the book very useful for setting up and administering different features of Windows 2000 such as group policy. There are good chapters on Group Policy Architecture and Managing Group Policy.
As an MCSE+Internet certified analyst assigned to the AD design team for a Fortune 500 company, I highly recommend this book. It makes a good operational reference for your bookshelf. Although not geared specifically for Windows 2000 certification tests, it is worth reading if you are preparing for the exams.
Coverage of the newest directory service from Microsoft.......2001-06-08
Special Edition Using Microsoft Active Directory provides the network administrator with complete, authoritative, "user friendly", in-depth coverage of the newest directory service from Microsoft. Sean Fullerton and James Hudson use their extensive previous training and administration experiences to expertly explain how to design, implement, and troubleshoot using the new directory service "Active Directory". Special Edition Using Microsoft Active Directory is very highly recommended for users ranging from Beginner to Advanced levels of experience. 554pp.

Don't Try the COM Examples.......2006-05-12
I used this book to navigate around the Windows Internet API and managed to put together a decent desk top application in C++.NET. Great. But the COM examples are so full of errors that they can not be compiled from the source code provided from the publisher. Now I'm not a super COM programmer but have put together COM applications with some success. However, it seems the author slapped together the COM chapter with little or no thought.
Get the internet internals here.......2003-04-24
A handy book covering various aspects of the Internet protocols; sample application simple enough to illustrate the concepts.
If you want to learn WinInet programming, this will be a great start.
I bought this book while I had to research ISAPI but found coverage on ISAPI just adequate. Wish the author comes up with a second edition or print with more alternatives to ISAPI.
First impression.......2003-01-04
I just got the book. I skimmed all chapters and read selected chapters. Note, this book is pretty old, but I think it still has practical value. The book talks about Windows 95 and NT 4, but more importantly, it talks about IE 4, which is the foundation of IE 5 and 6. I think the WinInet functionality began w/ IE4 and has not changed much, if at all.
The book does illustrate all examples in C++; however, there are enough non-language-specific *explanations* throughout the book to give it some value to everyone--I say this mainly because there are no other books on WinInet, at present, and clear explanations are not easily found on the Web. I know C++ so I cannot say how easy or hard it is to follow the examples if you don't know C++.
I'd love to see a newer book on this topic that would cover VB/C# .Net and IE 6, but until then, this book is my primary source for WinInet info.
Not For VB.......2001-07-14
I arrived at this book when I was doing searches on a refrence to help me use WinInet with Visual Basic. The book is not really a VB book at all. It barely mentions how to accomplish the tasks of their projects in VB. Everything is aimed at C++.
Well written, clear examples, through coverage........2001-07-04
This book gives you everything you need in order to effectively use the WinInet DLL. The coverage is very complete the explanations clear and the code examples relevant and nicely written. The HTTP, FTP, And Gopher protocols are covered using both the MFC wrapper classes and the WinInet DLL directly. An intermediate to advanced C++ windows programmer will have no trouble getting through this book, beginners stay away. You will also need to have a at least a basic understanding of MFC in order to get the most out of this book. A strong recommendation for those needing to use the communications capabilities of the WinInet DLL.

Book Description
MICROSOFT INTRANET SOLUTIONS is the one-stop source for comprehensive information about setting up a corporate intranet while preserving existing investments in hardware and software. The book first shows readers how to create web documents with Microsoft FrontPage(tm) and how to populate their new web sites with data produced by Microsoft Excel, Word, Microsoft Access, PowerPoint(r), and Outlook(tm). There's also abundant information about the server side of things, covering integration issues with Microsoft Information Server, Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server(tm), SNA Server, and Microsoft Internet Explorer. The book concludes with web page management, intranet development methodology, how to manage migration and coexistence, troubleshooting techniques, and where to go for additional information. The companion CD includes all the source code and files necessary to create the sample applications in the book, as well as examples of finished applications. The intranet arena will be one of the hottest in 1997, and books like this that show how to set up and use intranets can be expected to sell briskly.
Customer Reviews:
Aggresive content and style.......2001-02-12
The book does a good job at putting the "big" picture together; great style of technical writing.
The code presented in the book is very simplistic and not of much use in real life, even though it is appropriate for teaching purposes.
It is very aggresive while trying to cover too much ground in one book, leaving some empty holes at times. It does however accomplish its goal and main purpose of covering all neccesary technologies (at least the very basic ones) to deploy an intranet.

Customer Reviews:
Old Version.......2004-10-22
I was looking for a book on SharePoint 2003, Office 2003, etc but this book describes the earlier version of the software.
Still the best available for deploying SPS.......2004-10-06
While newer books are on the market, Fergusons's is still the one for planning and implementing an SPS deployment.
Valuable.......2003-11-28
I've been handed a Sharepoint project and picked up this wonderful and another older book. Between the two, I feel good about setting up and deploying SPS for piloting, though this book is more applicable to what I believe will be my challenges. And I'm thinking that the example chapters will be worth their weight in maybe not gold but at least floppies or PC cards.
Nice Job, but time for update soon.......2003-05-23
I'll keep this book, but think the author need to update it pretty soon. Very nice detail before and after installation, not like lot of books on the market for Sharepoint. Things are changing, but still worth getting for me at least.
Great SPS book, the only one I need in my library.......2003-01-29
I've read through a couple SPS books out there today, returned one, and only consider this one "keepable". It covers eveything I do as a Knowledge Consultant - design/architecture, deploying/setting up, training my users, managing changes, and so on. I can tell that the author has been through all of this many times over. Great job! I only wish a CD was included so I could easily search through the chapters.

Customer Reviews:
Works fine for me........2003-06-13
I bought this with some hesitation gvien the mixed reviews and wanted to leave my opinion. I thought the book was more task-based, so when I wanted to do certain things lik epersonalization, it was very easy to turn to the right chapters. I was not looking for an object reference, as the online help has that so why waste money buying it? I did think the examples could have been bigger, but our site is so specialized the examples might not have been helpful anyway. I thought the writing was very clear and I was able to better understand Commerce Server concepts, which I have been struggling with. So I guess if you want a book full of code, this one is not for you. If you want a book that explains how Commerce Server works and how you can use it, then this book is probably a good bet.
Not the best book, the only book.......2003-04-01
I'm in the midst of an e-Commerce project using CS 2002. I've read the book and can't disagree more with previous reviews. Where are the references into what each system object's interfaces are? Where's an example that isn't just "starting with a solution site"?
The structure of the book is awkward, there is no introduction into the CS architecture with an explaination of the various objects. It is up to the reader to notice an object being used and to figure out it's interface from existing online documentation.
This book is little more than a rehash of the existing online documentation, just a little easier to sift through. If you are doing a CS2002 site, this is the book for you because it's the only book out there.
Good Technical Understanding.......2003-02-07
What I like most about this book is how it explains the underlying data structures and stored procedures that are used to develop Commerce Server 2002. I appreciate the fact that they go through each aspect of Commerce Server 2002 and explains it in enough detail that a good developer can further extend.
Probably, the only thing that I would have added to this book is a section on doing development within C2K2 with large teams. This section would talk about the relative difficulties of large team development with C2K2.
A second edition to this book would be a complete site using C2K2 with the type of extensions that most development teams will have to make.
The next edition could be something like "C2K2 by Example" or "The C2K2 Cookbook".
A fast read and packed with information........2003-01-21
I had to write a comment and recommend this book. It is loaded with information about every detail of Commerce Server 2002, plus it's not presented in a way that makes it just an advertisement for Microsoft's Commerce Server. It gives excellent examples of what you should and should not do, and it doesn't leave anyone out (includes both .NET implementation and COM+/VS6 notes). The relaxed tone in the writing makes it a quick read and keeps it from getting too boring. Highly suggested book!!
This book lacks depth.......2003-01-16
This book was a nice overview of the product and its general capabilities. It lacks the depth in real world examples and particularly in the sample code area. Many times it is mentioned that the solution sites provided by Microsoft are not good designs for production, highly scaleable stores, yet most of the actual code samples are stripped straight from the solution site code. It would have been nice to see the author(s) invest some effort in writing some code themselves and showing alternatives to the methods Microsoft has already shown us. If you are looking for a book to help you build sites using Commerce Server 2002, skip this one.
