Computer Networks: A Systems Approach, designed for an advanced college-level course in network design and operation, provides the network applications programmer with detailed information about how networks do their thing. While Computer Networks is neither a user manual nor a technical reference, it provides an in-depth background on how network architectures and protocols work.
In the beginning, Larry Peterson and Bruce Davie discuss why networks are important and talk about where networks may go in the long term. The authors then move right into a discussion of protocols. There's a fascinating section--complete with plenty of C code--in which the authors actually develop a network protocol called A Simple Protocol (ASP). They compare switching and packet networks and emphasize tunneling protocols. In the internetworking chapter, you'll learn practically all there is to know about Internet Protocol (IP). The concluding chapters talk about traffic management, congestion reduction, and high-speed networking technologies.
Computer Networks reveals the guts of what's going on with computers that share data. Though way out of the league of most computer users, true geeks with an interest in networking will find what they need here.
Book Description
In this new edition of their classic and bestselling textbook, authors Larry Peterson and Bruce Davie continue to emphasize why networks work the way they do. Their "system approach" treats the network as a system composed of interrelated building blocks (as opposed to strict layers), giving students and professionals the best possible conceptual foundation on which to understand current networking technologies, as well as the new ones that will quickly take their place.
Incorporating instructor and user feedback, this edition has also been fully updated and includes all-new material on MPLS and switching, wireless and mobile technology, peer-to-peer networks, Ipv6, overlay and content distribution networks, and more. As in the past, all instruction is rigorously framed by problem statements and supported by specific protocol references, C-code examples, and thought-provoking end-of-chapter exercises.
New to the edition is a downloadable network stimulation lab manual that allows students to visualize and experiment with core networking technologies in direct coordination with the book's discussion. Thanks to this and many other enhancements, Computer Networks: A Systems Approach remains an essential resource for a successful classroom experience and a rewarding career in networking.
* Written by an author team with over thirty years of first-hand experience in networking research, development, and teaching--two leaders in the work of defining and implementing many of the protocols discussed in the book.
* Includes all-new coverage and updated material on MPLS and switching, wireless and mobile technology, peer-to-peer networks, Ipv6, overlay and content distribution networks, VPNs, IP-Telephony, network security, and multimedia communications (SIP, SDP).
* Additional and earlier focus on applications in this edition makes core protocols more accessible and more meaningful to readers already familiar with networked applications.
* Features chapter-framing statements, over 400 end-of-chapter exercises, example exercises(with solutions), shaded sidebars covering advanced topics, web resources and other proven pedagogical features.
* Through a companion Web site (see button on this website), provides many additional resources, including a downloadable network simulation lab manual tightly integrated with the topics in the book.

A good primer to computer networks and its design.......2006-09-25
A comprehensive textbook for undergraduate/graduate students. The book is complete with basic coverage to different types of networks and their working. Treatment to TCP and other Internet protocols well explained with pseudo code for different algorithms. Various extensions to TCP and network security basics well covered. The book does lack some mathematical treatment to the subject which could have improved the content.
Good for Academic Studies. But..........2005-11-24
I am studying this as part of my course. I have found this book teaches you from the base about Networking. It's really helpful in understanding the underlying technologies. Larry and Bruce have done a wonderful job in covering almost all of the aspects. But... I found only one thing lacking. That is...graphical explanations. This book is more of text with required graphics but in some places it took time to visualize the concept. I have had Behrouz A. Forozan's (I hope I have spelt the name correctly) "TCP/IP: The Complete Protocol Suite" along with this. Particularly I found some of the parts like ATM, Routing and other chapters' in this book textually gives us a thorough understanding and Forozan's book does depict that visually in a better way. Here is the bottomline, have this book as "The" texbook and have some other books like the as I mentioned before.
A good general introduction, not an engineering textbook........2005-01-27
Although this book clarifies the concepts of networking quite good, it lacks in-depth mathematical & statistical theory.
For those who are interested in the general picture, it's an excellent book. The authors actually succeeded quite good in not making it 'too dry'. For those who need 'more', like engineers and students in telecommunications/electronics, such as theories, applications and examples on efficiency, network performance parameters, etc., please look further as this book just doesn't offer that (and it probably never intended to).
Excellent book.......2004-10-14
I've been dealing with computer networks in theory and practice for quite some time. This book is excellent reference and give in depth details and knowledge. The structure is well designed and the materials are following each other. If you are looking for a startup book though, this might not be the right choice.
Too Confusing.......2004-07-29
This book is designed for someone who has prior knowledge with the underlying systems of a computer network. It is fairly in-depth, and explains a lot, but I think that for a true beginner it is hard to comprehend. I am working on a degree in Computer Science, so it wasn't like I was new to the idea of networking, but I found it hard to digest a lot of the technical aspects of this book. Some things could have been made to be more of an overview, rather than in-depth explanation of how something works at a bit level. I am now taking CCNA training, and some of the things talked about in this book do not relate at all to what someone needs to understand a working network.

Customer Reviews:
Every SMS 2003 Chef needs this book!.......2007-04-30
I've been working with Microsoft SMS products for years. Unfortunately, SMS 2003 is a very complex product that takes time to master. After exchanging emails for a couple of years (it seems) I'm glad to have finally met Greg at a recent conference and that he asked me to review a copy of his book.
After reading some of the reviews for Greg's and Warren's book; `SMS 2003 Recipes - A problem-Solution Approach", I can only conclude that some bought this book for the wrong reasons. Rather than comment on any of the wrong reasons; I'd like to comment on what I liked about this book and how SMS Administrators can take their craft to a new level.
What I liked:
- The authors covered the basics of using VBScript to communicate with SMS and managing SMS tasks with VBScript. Discussion of coding best practices, and of interfacing with WMI are key items to cracking the coding mysteries of SMS 2003.
- The overall format of the book is well done; Problem/task statement, how to solve problem through the SMS 2003 MMC, then how to solve/automate the problem/task statement through code.
- Each section of SMS 2003 administration is covered in detail, from automation of site property settings to automation of advertisements.
- Index is excellent - since I do not usually work in a "linear" manner, it's nice to be able to quickly locate a topic and find more information.
- The chapter on building a Virtual SMS lab. While this topic may seem out of place at first in a "recipes" book, I can tell you first hand the importance of testing any code based solution in a lab environment before releasing these changes in production!
Conclusion
SMS is all about automation, saving businesses time and money through automating; hardware & software inventory, and software distribution (to name a few tasks). There are many tasks that SMS administrators perform on a daily basis that can be time consuming, especially when there are many SMS sites that need to be managed. Some of the VBScript code contained in this book is available on various sites. However, Greg and Warren are to be commended for a compilation of this information in one source location and thoroughly explaining its usage. This book is ideal for any SMS administrator looking to take his or her skill set to a higher level of ability!
An advanced SMS coding book.......2007-03-13
This book is for advanced SMS administrators who work with SMS constantly. I was expecting the first few chapters to start from the beginning of an SMS install and explain some best practices methods, but this book expects you to have it all up and running.
All the script examples show you how to modify sms to make life easier for administrators. And wheres the included PDF version of the book so you can copy the scripts?? Well you need to pay an extra $10 for the privledge!
If you want to customise SMS and want example vbscripts then this book is definately for you. If you want a book to show you how to install and configure SMS & explain its options, buy another book.
Edit: Greg had contacted me directly and pointed myself to his publishers website where the source code can be downloaded. Thanks Greg.
Solid resource for under the hood SMS Scripting.......2007-01-17
I found this book to be very detailed when it came to the scripting aspects of SMS. A little creativity , an HTA front end and these scripts and you could have a very advanced SMS environment. I also liked the drill in on the ITMU screens to show someone that is initially installing it, what to expect.
The only drawback for this book in my opinion was the lack of OSD (Operating System Deployment) Feature Pack information. There is a paragraph that discusses it but not much more. However, this being a problem solution approach to SMS I am not surprised OSD isn't covered in depth.
If you only buy one SMS book -- Get this one..........2007-01-13
This is the best book I have seen about SMS since SMS 1.2 (what 10 years ago?). I've working with SMS for over 8 years including 4 years at Microsoft and recently as a consultant. I recommend this book to all my customers who are just getting started with SMS as it walks them through basic tasks like how to create collection and so on. As you get used to SMS and want to do more sophisticated things, this book is right with you as it has vbscript examples for almost everything it describes doing through the GUI.
If you have a little knowledge this book is a big help.......2006-11-25
My boss told me we were going to purchase sms to run with our domain. So I started buying several books to help. This is the first book that started me out from the beginning and took me all the way to the end in terms I could understand.
I found the examples relavant and helpful all the way through the book.
Anyone who has to administer sms should start with this book.

Great book that provides all I need.......2006-12-23
I used this textbook for TDC course at DePaul.
It was really helpful and useful especially for newbie.
Plus the details are not too general.
I actually learned something..........2006-11-14
This book laid out as much information as possible without cluttering the pages with filler. There were several real-world examples, and the helpful diagrams really put the words into action. Now, there's any humor in this book, so don't expect to be entertained. And there's a lot of information in this book. I mean a lot. But if you actually want to learn something about networking and data communications, you won't be disappointed.
Integrating Technology and Management.......2003-10-06
I have been using this book for two years to teach a senior level management class how technology is used in today's business. As most of instructors would agree, it is sometimes (or always) difficult to draw management students' interest in technical issues. If you use this book, that wouldn't be a problem at all. Supporting the topics in the book by some case studies from contemporary business would even make your course indispensable.

Easy to read and understand.......2003-02-06
I used this book for an internet class so i ended up reading the entire book from chapter one to the end. It was a little boring at times, but it made it easy to understand the material and the diagrams were great. The only annoying thing was how in the first few chapters it kept saying what was beyond the scope of the book and what chapter you will be studying what and when. Stick to the material.
Great Book for Beginners.......2002-02-18
One of my networking classes for IST required this book. I've read chapters 1,2,3,4,5,6, & 12. I actually enjoy reading this textbook and look forward to reading more chapters. Other students in my class enjoy reading it too.
It goes into just enough details about the electronics behind the scene but nothing to extensive. It also provides a great overview about networks, without over welling the reader with tedious facts. The book starts out about the OSI model and then walks the reader through each layer.
It is a great book and I would encourage any instructor seeking a textbook to test this one out, your students will be glad you did. *Also useful for someone interested in networking for the first time or someone who wants to see the whole picture.

Book Description
Computer Networks, 4E is the only introductory computer networking book written by authors who have had first-hand experience with many of the protocols discussed in the book, who have actually designed some of them as well, and who are still actively designing the computer networks today.
This newly revised edition continues to provide an enduring, practical understanding of networks and their building blocks through rich, example-based instruction. The authors' focus is on the why of network design, not just the specifications comprising today's systems but how key technologies and protocols actually work in the real world to solve specific problems. The new edition makes less use of computer code to explain protocols than earlier editions. Moreover, this new edition shifts the focus somewhat higher in the protocol stack where there is generally more innovative and exciting work going on at the application and session layers than at the link and physical layers.
* Completely updated with new sidebar discussions that cover the deployment status of protocols described in the book.
* Addition of sizeable number of new exercises and solutions.
* Downloadable Opnet network simulation software and lab experiments manual.
* New and revised instructor support material, including Powerpoint slides, eps version of figures appearing in the text; sample exams; lecture notes; UNIX sockets programming assignments.

Book Description
Performance of Computer Communication Systems A Model-Based Approach Boudewijn R. Haverkort Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen, Germany Computer communication systems and distributed systems are now able to provide an increasing range of services. As the timing requirements in the operation of these services are becoming crucial for the global community. performance assessment and selection of communication and distributed systems are, therefore, becoming more important. In this book, the author illustrates the techniques and methods used to evaluate the performance of computer communication systems, thereby covering all aspects of model-based performance evaluation. Unlike other books on this topic, there is no restriction to a particular performance evaluation technique. Notable features in this book include:
* coverage of all major techniques of performance evaluation
* non-mathematical problem solving approach, explaining and illustrating performance evaluation techniques
* assessment techniques for stochastic processes, single server queues, networks of queues and stochastic Petri nets
* numerous application studies, including token ring systems, client-server systems, and wide-area networks
* substantial number of practical exercises and examples.
For computer or electrical engineers who design and implement computer communication systems, this book provides an excellent overview of the methods and techniques used to construct and solve performance models. It is also a valuable source of information for postgraduate students in computer science and related subjects. Visit Our Web Page! http://www.wiley.com/
Customer Reviews:
Probably the best modeling book around!.......2007-01-22
I consider this book a lucky find. As you can probably guess, I have nearly every book remotely related to computer performance modeling, which you'll see if you look at my guide to building a web site that doesn't frustrate customers. But for some reason, I didn't have this one. When I did get a copy, it quickly became one of my favorites!
The book starts with a good foundation in stochastic processes (Part I) and single-server queuing models (Part II). The highlight of the second part is chapter 8 on phase-type distributions, quasi-birth-death processes and matrix geometric methods. I have not found much on this approach elsewhere that's accessible to a practitioner, so if you, like me, have a large collection and are looking for a reason to add this book, here's one!
Part III covers queuing networks. There isn't much here you won't find in other books, although it's explained in more detail and covers more of the history of the subject than many of the basic books. Few of today's books go beyond mean value analysis for closed networks, for example; it's very rare that the convolution algorithm is even mentioned.
Part IV covers stochastic Petri net models. Most of this, except for chapter 17 on infinite state stochastic Petri nets, is available in other books. But, like chapter 8, you won't find the material in chapter 17 in an accessible form anywhere else. And a number of the other books on stochastic Petri nets have gone out of print. So chapter 17 is reason two to add this one to a collection.
Part V consists of one chapter on simulation. I personally think simulation has gotten way too much bad press. Analytical modeling proponents are fond of whining about how long it takes to build simulation models, how long it takes to run them, etc. I don't personally do simulation, but there are numerous situations where it's the "right thing to do".
In summary, I think this is currently the best advanced modeling book available. If you want to go beyond mean value analysis, get this one. It covers stochastic processes, single queues, queuing networks, stochastic Petri nets and simulation.

Book Description
A Practical Approach to WBEM/CIM Management describes WBEM/CIM architecture and explores the models developed by the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF). It examines the interfaces with which WBEM/CIM code will have to work, and offers examples of applicable models and related code. It introduces components of WBEM architecture, defines models within CIM, and illustrates communication between the WBEM client and server. It also investigates transitioning from SNMP or proprietary systems to the WBEM/CIM approach. The author avoids focusing on details that are bound to change quickly, instead he provides coding examples in openPegasus, which exemplifies many other similar C++ implementations.

Book Description
A guide to the theory and application of methods of projections.
With the rise of powerful personal computers, methods of vector space projections have moved rapidly from the realm of theory into widespread use. This book reflects the growing interest in the application of these methods to problem solving in science and engineering. It brings together material previously scattered in disparate papers, book chapters, and articles, and offers a systematic treatment of vector space projections.
Written by two leading authorities in the field, this self-contained volume provides a tutorial on projection methods and how to apply them in science and engineering. It details effective problem-solving strategies, and explores key applications in communication and signal processing, neural networks and pattern recognition, and optics and image processing. This book:
- Reviews the fundamentals of vector space theory
- Covers principles and applications of vector space projections in general, and projections onto convex sets in particular
- Provides real-world examples solvable on PCs and modest workstations
- Features more than 100 illustrations
- Includes end-of-chapter exercises and references.
This extremely useful reference for practicing engineers, scientists, and educators can also be used for graduate-level study in science, mathematics, and engineering. Portions of the book have been used as material in short courses on applications of vector space projections.
Customer Reviews:
The only book on this important subject in print.......1999-11-18
This book showed me how vector space methods are a natural way to use the computer for solving difficult problems in engineering design. Although my background in mathematics consists only of advanced calculus and linear algebra, I had no trouble following the theory and learning the applications. For electrical engineers, such as myself, the applications to digital filter design were particularly interesting. There are many other applications described, including the design of lenses, image processing, even neural nets. What I like is that the authors give the backgroud to each application so that even if you are unfamiliar with the field, there are clear and concise introductions that help your understanding of the problem. For example, in the digital filter design section, the authors explain why digital filters are important and how they relate to analog filters. To write a book like this takes not only broad knowledge but extraordinary expository skills.

Not very good........2004-03-04
This outdated text should be put to pasture. When was this thing written, 1995? In computer terms it may as well been written in Latin. Thanks for describing Win95 and all about 10base2 thin for us. Very helpful. The most recent "edition" was to inform us that our latest threat comes from "terrorism." Nice. If you want to know the history of network computing, buy another book. If you want to config your NT 4.0 network, buy another book. In short, buy another book.
Not Recommended.......2003-11-08
I bought this book for a class in Network Management. The content in this book is very basic and does not provide much useful information. I do not recommend this book.

Suitable for students, working network engineers, and (to some degree) salespeople responsible for promoting network services, An Engineering Approach to Computer Networking: ATM Networks, the Internet, and the Telephone Network explains how voice and data networks operate. Author Srinivsan Keshav does a great job of explaining how various systems--especially Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks, Internet Protocol (IP) networks, and switched voice networks--communicate signals from one point to another. He notes similarities and differences among the systems' approaches to the problem of telecommunications and highlights the challenges inherent in integrating them. If you're involved in building a large network, particularly if you'll be laying your own cable over long distances--you'll appreciate the design advice this book provides.
An Engineering Approach to Computer Networking takes an academic approach to its topic--the author based this book on lectures he gave at several universities, after all. You can fault his writing style for its dryness, but not for lack of detail or breadth of coverage. He deserves particular praise for his explanation of the seven-layer Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model, complete with an intelligent analogy between a letter delivered by a postal service and a packet traveling over a network. --David Wall
Topics covered: Fundamentals of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Internet Protocol (IPv4 and IPv6), and telephone networks. Multiplexing, collision management, queuing, switching and routing under ATM, IP, and switched voice.
Customer Reviews:
Poor layout and full of typos.......2004-08-06
I can see that this book has gotten many good reviews, but i think it is THE WORST textbook I've ever had.
Layout is extremely unprofessional. (often insufficient whitespace, inline numbers, symbols, parens and italics, very often flipping back and forth because text and exercise questions reference (poorly drawn) diagrams on other pages) like this is an example of bad layout. heh.
Exercise questions are poorly worded. (like Ex 11.5, 14.3)
General errors in main text, figures and solutions. (like pg320 last paragraph, Example 13.2 on pg 402, Fig 11.4 on pg 299, solution for Ex 13.6 on pg 641)
Serious text for developers of networking devices.......2001-04-30
I am a senior engineer for network security operations who enjoys learning about networking technologies. I read this book because it compares and contrasts telephone, Internet, and ATM networks. I also have a general interest in learning how networks operate. I concentrate on security, but I realize knowing more about networks in general helps my intrusion detection work. I strongly recommend reading this book if you develop or research networking products. Less focused readers will quickly become overwhelmed, as I was!
Mr. Keshav states "the bulk of this book is written at a level suitable for first-year graduate students in computer science or electrical engineering." He is not kidding! While Mr. Keshav does an excellent job discussing technical material, the extreme level to which he takes explanations demands a very dedicated reader. I was happy enough to learn of the many trade-offs required for sound network device design. Once Mr. Keshav began illuminating exactly how some technologies work (with theorems, equations, and statistics), I began skimming.
My favorite sections included chapters 1 through 4, the "basic" material introducing telephone, Internet, and ATM networks. Chapters 5 (Protocol Layering), 6 (System Design) and 7 (Multiple Access) were also good. Beyond chapter 7 (with some exceptions), I found the material deeper than the interest level I have as a security professional.
Some may wonder about the relevance of a book written in 1996 to current networking practice. I believe the bulk of the text remains useful, since it uses technological examples to frame underlying design approaches. Furthermore, Mr. Keshav provides a way to think about networks by defining crucial terms and concepts in clear terms. These definitions are reinforced by excellent summaries, tables, and glossaries.
"An Engineering Approach" provides an incredible number of answers to the "why" questions of telephone, Internet, and ATM networking. Other books will give mainly the "what" or sometimes "how." "What" is enough for doing daily admin, "how" is enough to improve network performance, and "why" is needed to build better networks. If you need all three levels, give Mr. Keshav's book a try!
excellent reference for researchers & developers alike.......2001-02-09
I don't have anything other than superlatives for this book. I would probably compare this with, say, "The C Programming Language" by Kernighan & Ritchie, which is an accepted C programming bible. The book is NOT painfully huge yet it makes the reader get the right intuition very easily on almost every topic in networking.
Every concept either has either a) rigourous analysis b) references to where rigourous analysis could be found c) or both
I particularly liked the "scheduling" chapter coz I had to read a couple of research papers on the topic, yet my basic intuition wasn't strong.
In the next edition (if there is one planned), I would like to see concepts on GPRS, 3rd Generation Wireless Systems and even 4th generation IP-core cellular systems (ICEBERG research project at UC berkeley) considering that there are > 500 million cellphones worldwide and increasing at a much faster rate than Internet.
Dr. Keshav, if you do read this, I would like to thank you for doing such a wonderful turn to the networking community by writing this terrific book.
No desert rides: This one gets the butter out of milk........2000-10-18
Dr.S.Keshav has brought out a style of times that helps us best understand the subject right at its nerve centre. Infact his approach "Engineering Approach" to help understand and appreciate the subject is what makes the difference. No other book has provided such a clarity and direct dive into the subject of networking technology. This review of mine is due two years and am glad having made it today.
Great. This one has the meat. My favorite........2000-07-20
This is one of the few books that starts with atoms and goes right upto traffic characterizations. Beginners can also benefit a lot from this book, though they might sometimes have to refer to other more basic books. The approach is fantastic and the explanations are great. He uses examples which clarify your concepts and make you think. There is an entire chapter on design issues. That one is a winner. There is also a great bibliography at the end. It makes you wonder; all the time and effort required to write a book of such clarity. The book is great. Its worth the time and the money.

Best Pick.......2004-02-09
I read the third edition front to back. If the forth edition is anything like the third, you won't be disappointed.
Business Oriented.......2000-07-21
one of the best books in its field, gives details yet doesn't go deeper than what business students would like, its language is easy yet specific and use network jargons. in short, buy it.
local area network.......2000-07-02
i want to know more about local area networks
The book is focused on applying the material........1998-08-12
I just finished a course on data communications at a local college. Since I knew absolutely nothing about the topic. I had nowhere to go but up. Mr Goldman's book is very readable and is chock filled with charts, checkoff lists and such that I will use when I get into the IT field. His objective to get the reader to think in terms of applying the material rather than memorizing it. He suceeds. Does he have any other related works out there? I'll buy them.
