Grammar Help.......2007-06-23
APA and MLA sections are helpful, but the rest of it is pointless, unless you do not know grammar. The cover is thin, so keeping it anywhere but home is not an option if you want it to stay attached.
Highly Recommend.......2002-12-04
On the inside flap of this book it says, "This edition was designed to help you quickly find answers to all kinds of questions you may have about writing." The QA, by Lynn Troyka does just that. The Quick Access Reference for Writers is an excellent resource book for all writers, especially students.
My college English teacher assigned the QA for our class. While I haven't read the entire book, I found all of the sections I have used to be beneficial in every aspect of my writing. The exercises that my teacher had us complete from the "Writing Process" section were very useful. I think completing these exercises helps to strengthen ones writing. In particular, the exercises keep an individual familiar with the writing process so that when they do have to write something, they can hopefully delve right into it.
I also used the book for grammatical questions and guidance on MLA documentation. Both sections easily explain the subject in what I will refer to as "laymen's terms." Most other writing books I have referenced seem to be written in a hoity fashion. This, to me isn't very beneficial, especially considering I wouldn't be looking in a writing reference book if I did not need something to be simply explained to me. I find MLA to be very confusing (and utterly annoying!). The QA was able to answer and explain my questions on documentation straightforwardly and made completely in the bibliography section of my papers a breeze.
The organization of the book is what makes it so wonderful and useful. The actual format of the text and its arrangement is unlike most writing books that I have sought reference in. Instead of having to search for the table of contents to find the part you are looking for, the book uses divider-tabs to separate the major sections. Examples of these sections include, "Thinking and Reading Reflectively," "Research," "MLA Documentation," "Grammar Basics," and "Tips for Multilingual Writers." This format makes it extremely easy to find the information you need. Also, the table of contents itself is excellently organized. It completely outlines each section of the book, making it very easy to find the one you need. The QA was so useful, that I found myself using it not only for the assigned class, but also for my own research in personal writing and for other college classes.
For those who need instant gratification, I recommend this book highly. Almost any question you may have concerning writing, you will be able to find it in this book quickly and easily. The Quick Access Reference for Writers lives up to its name entirely.
An excellent, quick reference for writers.......2000-09-19
It's a worthwhile addition to any writer or editors reference materials. Clear, concise, and easy to use. Particularly liked the editor's marks reference right in the front.
Caution, teachers: Not for anyone needing help with grammar!.......1999-11-03
I was given this book on the first day of classes by my division head at my community college. In the past, we had always used the "Simon and Schuster Handbook for Writiers" Fifth Edition, which is a far better text.
If your students are needing a text that will help them understand and learn grammar, punctuation, style, and referencing, Quick Access is not the text for them. The afore mentioned handbook, however, is. Once they have mastered the handbook, the Quick Access is perfect for someone who has knowledge of all the rules but might just occasionally need to check the odd thing or two. Keep this in mind when considering this text for either your classes or yourself.
A Simple but Good Reference.......1999-07-08
Being a college student and starting a career in journalism, I have acquired numerous writing references. Quick Access has an advantage over Writer's Reference in that it has easy to acces cross-references and can lay flat while one is writing and is sturdy to handle this college student. Am I an ace reporter or an A student? Getting there with Quick Access.

Access 200 - for dummies.......2001-08-06
Book was well organized, and delivered promptly.
However, was disappointed in that the book did not address many areas of interest for me, such as setting up security, protecting against errant/accidental data entry into exisitng records.
Book would be useful to user with very little experience.
Book for my Family.......2000-06-23
My family wanted to try out the different software on thier new computer. They had a sparked interest in Access. I use Access at work on a dily bases, so after many nights of phone calls I bought my parents this book. My parents, who have never used Access, are able to create tables, queries, reports and forms with ease. All I have to worry about now is them applying for my job.

Book Description
Cocoa® is more than just a collection of classes, and is certainly more than a simple framework. Cocoa is a complete API set, class library, framework, and development environment for building applications and tools to run on Mac OS® X. With over 240 classes, Cocoa is divided into two essential frameworks: Foundation and Application Kit. Above all else, Cocoa is a toolkit for creating Mac OS X application interfaces, and it provides access to all of the standard Aqua® interface components such as menus, toolbars, windows, buttons, to name a few. Cocoa in a Nutshell begins with a complete overview of Cocoa's object classes. It provides developers who may be experienced with other application toolkits the grounding they'll need to start developing Cocoa applications. Common programming tasks are described, and many chapters focus on the larger patterns in the frameworks so developers can understand the larger relationships between the classes in Cocoa, which is essential to using the framework effectively. Cocoa in a Nutshell is divided into two parts, with the first part providing a series of overview chapters that describe specific features of the Cocoa frameworks. Information you'll find in Part I includes:
- An overview of the Objective-C language
- Coverage of the Foundation and Application Kit frameworks
- Overviews of Cocoa's drawing and text handling classes
- Network services such as hosts, Rendezvous URL services, sockets, and file handling
- Distributed notifications and distributed objects for interapplication communication
- Extending Cocoa applications with other frameworks, including the AddressBook, DiscRecording, and Messaging frameworks
The second half of the book is a detailed quick reference to Cocoa's Foundation and Application Kit (AppKit) classes. A complement to Apple's documentation, Cocoa in a Nutshell is the only reference to the classes, functions, types, constants, protocols, and methods that make up Cocoa's Foundation and Application Kit frameworks, based on the Jaguar release (Mac OS X 10.2). Peer-reviewed and approved by Apple's engineers to be part of the Apple Developer Connection (ADC) Series, Cocoa in a Nutshell is the book developers will want close at hand as they work. It's the desktop quick reference they can keep by their side to look something up quickly without leaving their work. Cocoa in a Nutshell is the book developers will want close at hand as they work. It's the desktop quick reference they can keep by their side to look something up quickly without leaving their work.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Purchase.......2007-03-24
One of the best books a Cocoa programmer can buy! It references most of the Cocoa API and Objective-C, as well as providing a few good examples. I find it indispensable.
A Good Reference -- Not a Tutorial!!!.......2005-07-24
This book may be recommended by Apple Computer as reading for programmers aspiring to be OS X Cocoa programmers, but these "In a Nutshell..." books from O'Reiley are like the dictionary. They are good references, but not good to learn from.
A much better starting place to learn Cocoa programming -- the best OS X technology for new Mac-OSX only software -- is the book "Learning Cocoa with Objective-C'. This book is also on Apple's recommended reading list for programmers aspiring to master Cocoa.
The ISBN number of "Learning Cocoa..." is: 0-596-00301-3.
I plan to continue my study of Cocoa with "Programming in Objective-C:A Complete Introduction to the Objective-C language". I feel that I need this book even though I know C and C++. Objective-C is quite a bit different. ISBN 0-672-32586-1
Then, I plan to read: "Cocoa Programming" ISBN 0-67232230-7.
That brings me back to the book that I started with. "Cocoa in a Nutshell". Then, I'd be ready for a reference book, and I would also use Apple's web reference, and on-disk reference materials that are on your hard disk when you install Apple's free development tools.

Simple.......2002-07-18
The Dummies series lives on and this small desktop companion is a handy reference. If you're a Dummies series fan, you may benefit more by spending a little extra on this book's big brother "Access 2002 for Dummies" because it goes into more depth than the brief introductions in the "Quick Reference" version.

Excellent place to start!!!.......2005-12-24
This book is an excellent place to start if you are wanting to learn the basics of Access 2000. Step-by-step procedures to build a nice little data base for a video rental store then learn to manipulate the data. I reccomend this to anyone wanting to get an overview of how to build a relational database with Access 2000.
Use this book to get you up and running.......2000-05-18
It doesn't matter whether you are a newcomer to Access or are upgrading - this book will get you up and running from page 1.
It is easy to follow with lots of hints and tips. If you work through the book will you end up with an impressive database for a Video Shoe. You will have customers, videos, rentals etc so you can experience how a relational database works (one with linked tables).
I am a trainer and wish I had written this series of books. I have found that anything with Joyce Cox in the Author list is good value.
Buy this book first - when you have worked through it then consider buying an expensive "all singing and dancing" reference manual.
