As of its release in early 2007, Planet Earth is quite simply the greatest nature/wildlife series ever produced. Following the similarly monumental achievement of The Blue Planet: Seas of Life, this astonishing 11-part BBC series is brilliantly narrated by Sir David Attenborough and sensibly organized so that each 50-minute episode covers a specific geographical region and/or wildlife habitat (mountains, caves, deserts, shallow seas, seasonal forests, etc.) until the entire planet has been magnificently represented by the most astonishing sights and sounds you'll ever experience from the comforts of home. The premiere episode, "From Pole to Pole," serves as a primer for things to come, placing the entire series in proper context and giving a general overview of what to expect from each individual episode. Without being overtly political, the series maintains a consistent and subtle emphasis on the urgent need for ongoing conservation, best illustrated by the plight of polar bears whose very behavior is changing (to accommodate life-threatening changes in their fast-melting habitat) in the wake of global warming--a phenomenon that this series appropriately presents as scientific fact. With this harsh reality as subtext, the series proceeds to accentuate the positive, delivering a seemingly endless variety of natural wonders, from the spectacular mating displays of New Guinea's various birds of paradise to a rare encounter with Siberia's nearly-extinct Amur Leopards, of which only 30 remain in the wild.

That's just a hint of the marvels on display. Accompanied by majestic orchestral scores by George Fenton, every episode is packed with images so beautiful or so forcefully impressive (and so perfectly photographed by the BBC's tenacious high-definition camera crews) that you'll be rendered speechless by the splendor of it all. You'll see a seal struggling to out-maneuver a Great White Shark; swimming macaques in the Ganges delta; massive flocks of snow geese numbering in the hundreds of thousands; an awesome night-vision sequence of lions attacking an elephant; the Colugo (or "flying lemur"--not really a lemur!) of the Philippines; a hunting alliance of fish and snakes on Indonesia's magnificent coral reef; the bioluminescent "vampire squid" of the deep oceans... these are just a few of countless highlights, masterfully filmed from every conceivable angle, with frequent use of super-slow-motion and amazing motion-controlled time-lapse cinematography, and narrated by Attenborough with his trademark combination of observational wit and informative authority. The result is a hugely entertaining series that doesn't flinch from the predatory realities of nature (death is a constant presence, without being off-putting), and each episode ends with 10-minute "Planet Earth Diaries" (exclusive to this DVD set) that cover a specific aspect of production, like "Diving with Pirahnas" or "Into the Abyss" (the latter showing the rigors of filming the planet's most spectacular caves, including the last filming ever officially permitted in the "Chandelier Ballroom," a crystal-encrusted cavern found over a mile deep in New Mexico's treacherous Lechuguilla, the deepest cave in the continental United States.)

With so many of Earth's natural wonders on display, it's only fitting that the final DVD in this five-disc set is devoted to Planet Earth: The Future, a separate three-part series in which a global array of experts is assembled to discuss issues of conservation, protection of delicate ecosystems, and the socio-economic benefits of understanding nature as a commodity that returns trillions of dollars in value at no cost to Earth's human population. At a time when the multiple threats of global warming should be obvious to all, let's give Sir David the last word, from the closing of Planet Earth's final episode: "We can now destroy or we can cherish--the choice is ours." --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Marred by nutcake alarmism.......2007-07-02

Wonderfully filmed and awe-inspiring, but marred by unscientific nutcake alarmism ("the icecaps are melting! it's our fault! aaargh! the penguins are dying! Aaargh!") - search for junkscience or see Inhofe's site for the scientific rejection of this religious ranting. Also, necessarily vague Darwinist pablum is randomly tossed in. If you can ignore this religious material and focus on the real science, you're in for a treat.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-07-02

It is just amazing how BBC manages to produce wildlife documentaries of this calibre time and again.
First of all, you will be amazed to know that there is so much of untouched wilderness still out there. But you will also be saddened to know that there is actually nothing that is truly untouched!
The program is divided geographically and shows you some pretty spectacular shots. The aerial shots, in particular, are absolutely amazing. The limit to which the camera men have gone needs to be seen to be believed.
The image of the snow leopard hunting in thick snow is something that makes me feel privileged! And if you thought you have seen all there is to see about lions, wait till you see this one!
The photography is unbelievable, the sound is awesome, a must watch with the entire family. Certainly a collectors edition.

1 out of 5 stars Disgustingly Violent.......2007-07-01

I really dislike this DVD. I wish I hadn't wasted my money. Each segment ends with some animal killing another. The whole thing is disgustingly and unnecessarily violent.

5 out of 5 stars Converted!.......2007-06-30

I had never really considered the direct impact we have on this planet and its other inhabitants before I saw this series.
I am in awe of our planet after watching this amazing series and have convinced others to purchase this. The cinematography and photography is beautiful and moving.
Enough of the gush but I can not stress how this has changed my thinking - species are at risk every day because of changes to our environment, many of which we can control.
I would highly recommend this to anyone - the younger the better!

Great series showing the natural world, full of wonder and beauty. Attenborough's excellent
commentary was not used for the American showing, alas. Show this to your kids, so they can
see what might still be saved...

I ordered this series for father's day gifts. I have yet to see it. I am now learning what hd dvd means. I hope to get the regular version soon. Ordered three and no one can watch it.

5 out of 5 stars Changing my life!.......2007-06-28

My 26 yr. old son asked for this for his b'day. His friends highly recommended it. He received the High Definition version for his HD Television. He put the first of three DVD's on for me and his grandparents. Beautiful and eternal in presentation.
I recommend this only if you believe in a creator. If you are an evolution minded person you won't appreciate it.
Thank you to the makers of this film.

1 out of 5 stars Planet earth DVD collection, High Def. - Terrible.......2007-06-27

Not one but two shipments of this DVD collection will not play on ANY player. High Definition or otherwise. I still have both sets and am waiting for a return envelope that I was told would arrive so that I can send them both back. I would love to have a good copy of this production. Do you have any?

1 out of 5 stars Couldn't even view it!!.......2007-06-27

We must be technologically behind, I guess, because we were unable to view this HD DVD on any of our DVD players. In full disclosure, we only have one HD DVD player in the house, but it still didn't work there. The most unfortuneate aspect is that we gave the set as a gift to my dad for Father's Day, and he couldn't even view it!! He also has a (fairly new) HD DVD player. Inside the box there is a little note about going online to your player's manufacturer's website and finding out about available software upgrades for your player, so that you can view these DVDs "created using the latest technology". I wish I would have known this when I was purchasing, I would have just ordered the regular (non-HD) version.

5 out of 5 stars Mother Nature Exposed.......2007-06-27

Simply the finest nature series ever produced. You might have to pick your jaw up off the floor after viewing the program in high definition.

5 out of 5 stars Blu-ray Planet Earth On the PS3.......2007-07-02

I recently saw the US HD TV version of Planet Earth with Sigourney Weaver Narrating, the quality was amazing. I have a PAL PS3 that doubles as a Blu-ray player, so when I saw that Planet Earth was avaliable on Blu-ray, I had to have it. The blu-ray version is currently only avaliable in the U.S., but it is not zoned so it works fine on my PAL Playstation 3. The quality of the camera working and the high dfinition is fabulous, a must have if you have a blu-ray player and a bargain as well for over 500 minutes of 1080P quality.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-07-01

An amazing display of the power of HD. Perfect for anybody with a brand new TV they want to show off. Amazing captured and very informative this is a great series about our planet.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing depiction of our planet!!!.......2007-06-29

To get the negative out of the way first, I was a little disappointed with some of the video footage used. I believe some of this was older stock footage in SD up converted into HD. There is no other explanation for the noise in some of the pictures, other than poor encoding/filming practice.

That said, most of the footage in this series is simply spectacular. I give the film 5 stars not only for the HD video content, but for the narration and most importantly, the content of the documentary. I have never seen such a well filmed and edited piece of work. You must own this even if you have to buy the SD version, but, since Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players are really coming down in price, and if you have a HD display, you MUST BUY THIS SERIES.

Hands down, the showcase for high definition DVD and educational content today! Both the beauty and brutality of nature will take your breath away.

4 out of 5 stars Planet Earth Blu-Ray DVD set.......2007-06-28

Highest quality Blu-Ray DVD with important story, gorgeous images. Perfect display - if the image doesn't look perfect, get another TV!

4 out of 5 stars Stunning!.......2007-06-27

I have been a nature documentary fan my whole life. Planet Earth is by far the most mind blowing series to date. They have set the new standard for nature shows.
The American versions with Sigourney Weaver are beautiful, but the naration is rather boring and un-eventful. This Blu-Ray/DVD release has the original David Attenborough narration which is truly inspiring.
My only complaint is that this Blu-Ray set doesn't have any extras! No commentary or "Making of Planet Earth". They really dropped the ball here.

Inspired by the Brothers Grimm, Jorge Luis Borges, and Guillermo del Toro's own unlimited imagination, Pan's Labyrinth is a fairytale for adults. Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) may only be 12, but the worlds she inhabits, both above and below ground, are dark as anything del Toro has conjured. Set in rural Spain, circa 1944, Ofelia and her widowed mother, Carmen (Ariadna Gil, Belle Epoque), have just moved into an abandoned mill with Carmen's new husband, Captain Vidal (Sergi López, With a Friend like Harry). Carmen is pregnant with his son. Other than her sickly mother and kindly housekeeper Mercedes (Maribel Verdú, Y Tu Mamá También), the dreamy Ofelia is on her own. Vidal, an exceedingly cruel man, couldn't be bothered. He has informers to torture. Ofelia soon finds that an entire universe exists below the mill. Her guide is the persuasive Faun (Doug Jones, Mimic). As her mother grows weaker, Ofelia spends more and more time in the satyr's labyrinth. He offers to help her out of her predicament if she'll complete three treacherous tasks. Ofelia is willing to try, but does this alternate reality really exist or is it all in her head? Del Toro leaves that up to the viewer to decide in a beautiful, yet brutal twin to The Devil's Backbone, which was also haunted by the ghost of Franco. Though it lacks the humor of Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth represents Guillermo Del Toro at the top of his considerable game. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

Following a bloody civil war, young Ofelia enters a world of unimaginable cruelty when she moves in with her new stepfather, a tyrannical military officer. Armed with only her imagination, Ofelia discovers a mysterious labyrinth and meets a faun who sets her on a path to saving herself and her ailing mother. But soon, the lines between fantasy and reality begin to blur, and before Ofelia can turn back, she finds herself at the center of a ferocious battle between good and evil.

4 out of 5 stars del Toro's creativity and detemination...with unexpected levels of violence.......2007-07-03

Writer/Director Guillermo del Toro is simply off-the-charts here in terms of creativity, imagination and having the dogged determination to get all this shaped into a project and then to film. And Sergi López is a personal favorite, equally adept at playing bad (and, wow, is he ever bad here) and good. And Maribel Verdú? Well, Y Tu Mama Tambien...enough said.

That said, I believe Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's The Lives of Others is the better film (the best film in at least five years, in my opinion), and deserving of its Oscar this year. I'll also note that I was more than a little jarred by how unrelentingly violent "Pan's" was. Sure, it depicts guerrilla warfare and it's hard to dress that up as happy chat, but - wow - when Sergi López takes a broken bottle to the that guy's face, it literally left me shaken for the next ten minutes. In fact, I watched with five others and a couple of them tuned out the film after that point.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, but bizarre film!.......2007-07-03

Okay, I don't know about the rest of you, but I was left with wanting Ofelia to discover more of the labyrinth and deal with more evil, shady characters. To be honest, my attitude towards Pan went from skeptical to acceptance. I honestly, thought Pan was out to get Ofelia as if he were the Devil incarnate.

I give it 5 stars because it's truly an original and imaginative film, but I was disappointed we didn't encounter more ghouls and ghosts within the labyrinth and see more of the labyrinth. The story focused too much on the captain and his brutality rather than Pan's labyrinth.

It was 2 stories within 1 film. On the one side, you have Ofelia's step-dad, a cruel Spanish captain, and on the other hand, you have Ofelia, a young, innocent child who is trying to escape the terrible events that surround her at every corner.

This is an interesting film, but not for the squeamish. As one reviewer asserted, "This is a fairy-tale for adults," so true.

CAUTION!!! This movie is not for kids due to very cold and graphic moments of violence!

5 out of 5 stars Pan's Labyrinth.......2007-07-02

Well your never quite sure what is reality and what is fantasy in this movie. It well lives up to any hype you've heard but I'll not describe the plot as you can get it anywhere.

The actors played their assigned roles well and truly 'believable' (fantasy remember). The plot was well laid out and there were no loose ends.

I would NOT recommend this for small (under 10-12 year olds as their is some fairly graphic violence at various parts of the movie. Cutting them would break the movie terribly so they have to stay in as they are the setups for major plot points.

I would recommend this to any fan of fantasy with the caveat about the violence. People die, some in pretty bad (implied) ways, a bit of tension that may also be to much for a small child.

3 out of 5 stars Well done, but graphic.......2007-07-02

Just bought this movie. It is very graphic and doesn't have as much fantasy as the previews eluded. I wish they did more in the labyrinth.

As the 2005 theatrical release of Serenity made clear, Firefly was a science fiction concept that deserved a second chance. Devoted fans (or "Browncoats") knew it all along, and with this well-packaged DVD set, those who missed the show's original broadcasts can see what they missed. Creator Joss Whedon's ambitious science-fiction Western (Whedon's third series after Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel) was canceled after only 11 of these 14 episodes had aired on the Fox network, but history has proven that its demise was woefully premature. Whedon's generic hybrid got off to a shaky start when network executives demanded an action-packed one-hour premiere ("The Train Job"); in hindsight the intended two-hour pilot (also titled "Serenity," and oddly enough, the final episode aired) provides a better introduction to the show's concept and splendid ensemble cast. Obsessive fans can debate the quirky logic of combining spaceships with direct parallels to frontier America (it's 500 years in the future, and embattled humankind has expanded into the galaxy, where undeveloped "outer rim" planets struggle with the equivalent of Old West accommodations), but Whedon and his gifted co-writers and directors make it work, at least well enough to fashion a credible context from the incongruous culture-clashing of past, present, and future technologies, along with a polyglot language (the result of two dominant superpowers) that combines English with an abundance of Chinese slang.

What makes it work is Whedon's delightfully well-chosen cast and their nine well-developed characters--a typically Whedon-esque extended family--each providing a unique perspective on their adventures aboard Serenity, the junky but beloved "Firefly-class" starship they call home. As a veteran of the disadvantaged Independent faction's war against the all-powerful planetary Alliance (think of it as Underdogs vs. Overlords), Serenity captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) leads his compact crew on a quest for survival. They're renegades with an amoral agenda, taking any job that pays well, but Firefly's complex tapestry of right and wrong (and peace vs. violence) is richer and deeper than it first appears. Tantalizing clues about Blue Sun (an insidious mega-corporation with a mysteriously evil agenda), its ties to the Alliance, and the traumatizing use of Serenity's resident stowaway (Summer Glau) as a guinea pig in the development of advanced warfare were clear indications Firefly was heading for exciting revelations that were precluded by the series' cancellation. Fortunately, the big-screen Serenity (which can be enjoyed independently of the series) ensured that Whedon's wild extraterrestrial west had not seen its final sunset. Its very existence confirms that these 14 episodes (and enjoyable bonus features) will endure as irrefutable proof Fox made a glaring mistake in canceling the series. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Five hundred years in the future there's a whole new frontier, and the crew of the Firefly-class spaceship Serenity is eager to stake a claim on the action. They'll take any job, legal or illegal, to keep fuel in the tanks and food on the table. But things get a bit more complicated after they take on a passenger wanted by the new totalitarian Alliance regime. Now they find themselves on the run, desperate to steer clear of Alliance ships and the flesh-eating Reavers who live on the fringes of space.

5 out of 5 stars Addictive and captivating!!.......2007-07-02

I had rented serenity in HD-DVD purely for the HD-DVD aspects of it. I loved the movie so much that I started researching it and finally got the Firefly Set from netflix. My wife and I fell in love with the cast, the superb editing, the witty dialogues and the overall sense of excellence about the series and the actor-character matchup. When we sat down to watch the last episode, it was so disappointing knowing that there were no more.

I am buying the set now and hopefully we'll learn those chinese slang curse words by heart and keep the legacy alive :-).

5 out of 5 stars Me Likey!!.......2007-06-29

I won't go on and on. Sometimes movies and TV shows make you feel like your coming home. That's what this one was like for me. You fall for the cast and want more. I happily became aware of Firefly after watching Serenity. After being smitten by Serenity, I was thrilled to learn there was more and happily lapped it up. And then, after the one and only short season came to an end, I was sad and hoped that some day there will be more in some shape or form.

If not, oh well. At least there was what there was.

Buy it not once, nor twice, but Thrice. Give it out as gifts. With sales like that, maybe there'll be more.

Shiny!

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!.......2007-06-28

What a great show! A cross between sci-fi and the old west with a touch of Eastern/Asian influence and lots of well written humor. Yes, it's different, but I absolutely love it! What a shame this great series wasn't allowed to continue. I highly recommend this series, it's worth every penny!

This series had it all lovable characters, great interaction,a couple of unknowns, and above all witty dialoge. I recommcend this to a fan of the movie( Serenity) and any fan of star wars.

Season One: Winner of the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy its first year out, Arrested Development is the kind of sitcom that gives you hope for television. A mockumentary-style exploration of the beleaguered Bluth family, it's one of those idiosyncratic shows that doesn't rely on a laugh track or a studio audience; it's shot more like a TV drama, albeit with an omniscient narrator (executive producer Ron Howard) overseeing the proceedings. Holding the Bluths together just barely is son Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman), the only normal guy in a family that's chock full of nuts. Hardworking and sensible, Michael's certain he's going to be given control of his family's Enron-style corporation upon the retirement of his father (Jeffrey Tambor). The fact that he's passed over instead for his mother (Jessica Walter) is only a blip when compared to his father's immediate arrest for dubious accounting practices, and the resulting freeze on the family's previously limitless wealth.

Bereft of money, and even less family love, the Bluths have to band together in their moment of need--not easy when everyone's looking out for number 1. In addition to his scabrous parents, Michael has to contend with his lothario older brother (Will Arnett), his basically useless younger brother (Tony Hale), his greedy twin sister (Portia DeRossi), and her sexually ambiguous husband (David Cross). Michael's only comrade in sanity is his son George Michael (Michael Cera), but then again, the teenage boy harbors a secret crush on his cousin (Alia Shawkat). A peerless ensemble led by the brilliant Bateman (who ever knew he could be this good?), all the actors are pitch-perfect in their roles, delivering the dryly funny, sometimes absurdist dialogue with the speed and flair of classic farce. The unusual tone of Arrested Development takes a bit of getting used to--it's far different from anything you'll see on TV, even HBO--but once you buy in to the Bluths' innumerable dysfunctions, you'll be laughing your head off for hours.--Mark Englehart

Season Two: The axe of cancellation dangled perilously over Arrested Development during its second season, but the award-winning comedy fought against fate to deliver a hilarious if scattershot 18 episodes (reduced from the original show order of 22), and stayed alive for the beginning of a third season. Most likely, the creators and actors knew the clock was ticking down, so they didn't hesitate to throw their all into these manic, hilarious episodes, which have only the thinnest of plot arcs but an electrifying energy that makes them hard to resist. Some of the story antics were more of the same: good son Michael (Jason Bateman) tries to keep his company afloat, but is often foiled by older brother Gob (Will Arnett); the precarious marriage of Lindsay (Portia de Rossi) and Tobias (David Cross) undergoes a trial separation; and young George-Michael (Michael Cera) fights his attraction to his cousin Maeby (Alia Shawkat). Other show developments, though, were new and stunningly, uproariously bizarre: Buster (Tony Hale) joins the army, but later finds his hand bitten off by a seal (yes, a real seal), and Oscar (Jeffrey Tambor), the hippie brother of jailed George Sr. (also Tambor), rekindles an affair with sister-in-law Lucille (Jessica Walter), which may have resulted in Buster's conception years ago.

Jokes flew fast and furious, as did guest stars--Ben Stiller, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Christine Taylor, Thomas Jane, Ed Begley Jr., Ione Skye, and Zach Braff among them--making it hard to keep straight who was doing what and why. No matter, as each of the episodes was in and of itself was a perfect gem of comedy, strung together by sharp writing and fantastic performances. In addition to the regular cast, both Liza Minnelli, reprising her role as "Lucille Two," and Martin Short, as an, um, eccentric family friend, deserve special mention, with the episode both appeared in, "Ready, Aim, Marry Me," a frenetic exercise in slapstick farce. Typical examples of the show's offbeat humor were found in "Afternoon Delight," in which various members of the Bluth family discover the true meaning of the '70s ballad, "Meet the Veals," wherein the Bluths encounter the conservative parents of George Michael's girlfriend, and "Motherboy XXX," surrounding an unsettling mother-son traditional dance. The entire cast cohered perfectly through this season, and their give and take provided a perfect balance among the actors, all of whom were even better than the previous year. However, it's Bateman who should be singled out as the show's anchor, mixing dry sarcasm with impeccable comic timing. Despite plummeting ratings, Arrested Development didn't just keep its head above water, it swam with grace and hilarity. --Mark Englehart

Season Three: Arrested Development--one of the greatest comedies in the history of television--went out in a blaze of glory. The truncated final season packed more biting humor per minute than ever before. In only 13 episodes, dozens of intertwining storylines spun in all directions: In addition to the overarching story about the fractious infighting of the Bluth family and the family's housing development company being investigated for treason in Iraq (a plot arc that comes to a dazzlingly surreal conclusion), the put-upon "good son" Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman, Teen Wolf Too) pursues romance with a lovely British woman (Charlize Theron, Monster) who turns out to be woefully inappropriate; swaggering magician Gob (Will Arnett, Monster-In-Law) flees from his newly-discovered teenage son while still pandering for the affection of his self-absorbed father (Jeffrey Tambor, The Larry Sanders Show); flighty Lindsay (Portia de Rossi, Ally McBeal) and her sexually blurry husband Tobias (David Cross, Mr. Show) both get the hots for the family's new lawyer, Bob Loblaw (Scott Baio, Charles in Charge); and much, much more. It's difficult to describe what makes Arrested Development so brilliant. The ensemble is uniformly superb (Jessica Walter, as the family's boozing, scheming matriarch, is particularly devastating this season) and the surprising guest stars (including Andy Richter, James Lipton, Justine Bateman, and many others) are perfectly cast; the characters' abominable behavior defies conventional television notions of "likability", yet they only grow more endearing the more you watch; the humor embraces wild slapstick and sharp satire, often within a single scene; and the nimble documentary style allows for sly glancing references to jokes and scenes from long-past episodes, rewarding devoted fans. But the key is that, no matter how screwball Arrested Development becomes, the show offers a rich, textured, and wonderfully coherent world in which these characters feel genuine, a world completely unlike the flat, plastic simulacrum offered by the average sitcom. Arrested Development was true to itself to the end. Its followers will cherish it forever. --Bret Fetzer

I rate it right up there with Seinfield and Friends, and maybe even better. I've watched all episodes several times and it never gets old b/c I keep discovering things I missed, subtle things that can be overlooked if you're not paying close attention.
I highly recommend it!

It feels both inaccurate and inadequate to describe The Office as a comedy. On a superficial level, it disdains all the conventions of television sitcoms: there are no punch lines, no jokes, no laugh tracks, and no cute happy endings. More profoundly, it's not what we're used to thinking of as funny. Most of the fervently devoted fan base watched with a discomfortingly thrilling combination of identification and mortification. The paradox is that its best moments are almost physically unwatchable. Set in the offices of a fictional British paper merchant, The Office is filmed in the style of a reality television show. The writing is subtle and deft, the acting wonderful, and the characters beautifully drawn: the cadaverous team leader Gareth (Mackenzie Crook); the monstrous sales rep, Chris Finch (Ralph Ineson); and the decent but long-suffering everyman Tim (Martin Freeman), whose ambition and imagination have been crushed out of him by the banality of ! the life he dreams uselessly of escaping. The show is stolen, as it was intended to be, by insufferable office manager David Brent, played by codirector-cowriter Ricky Gervais. Brent will become a name as emblematic for a particular kind of British grotesque as Basil Fawlty, but he is a deeper character. Fawlty is an exaggeration of reality, and therefore a safely comic figure. Brent is as appalling as only reality can be. --Andrew Mueller

The second series exceeded even the sky-high standards of the first. Indeed, it ventured beyond caricature and satire, touching on the very edge of darkness. Ricky Gervais is once again excruciatingly superb as David Brent, but in this series, Brent's to-the-camera assertions concerning his management qualities and executive capabilities are seriously challenged when the Slough and Swindon branches are merged and his former Swindon equivalent Neil (Patrick Baladi) takes over as area manager. To compensate, Brent cultivates his pathologically mistaken image of himself as an entertainer-motivator-comedian whose stage happens to be the workplace. Meanwhile, Tim, who can only maintain his sanity by teasing the priggish Gareth, continues to wrestle with his yearning for receptionist Dawn Tinsley (Lucy Davis), a sympathetic character persisting in a relationship with a man about whom she still maintains unspoken reservations. As ever, it's the awkward, reality TV-style pauses and silences, the furtive, meaningful and unmet glances across the emotional gulf of the open-plan office, that say it all here. As for Brent, his own breakdown is prefaced by a moment of hideous hilarity--an impromptu office dance, a mixture of "Flashdance and MC Hammer" as Brent describes it, but in reality bad beyond description. Then, when his fate is sealed, he at last reveals himself in a memorable finale to perhaps the greatest British sitcom, besides Fawlty Towers, ever made. --David Stubbs

The brilliant and devastating comedy of The Office is brought to a satisfying conclusion in The Office Special, originally a two-part Christmas special on the BBC, set three years after the end of the faux-documentary's second season. The former office manager David (Ricky Gervais) now ekes out a desperate existence as an oblivious quasi-celebrity, making awkward, humiliating visits back to the office staff he still believes loves him. Gawky Gareth (Mackenzie Crook) has risen to manager and become a petty tyrant, while the sweet but snide Tim (Martin Freeman) continues to pine for former receptionist Dawn (Lucy Davis), who fled to Florida with her fiance. When the documentary crew pays for Dawn to return for the holiday party, an unpredictable reunion looms ahead. The Office fuses scathing humor and genuine empathy, turning excruciating social discomfort into inspired satire. Fans will find this special rewarding in all respects. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars British Humor at its Best!.......2007-06-27

We love the US and UK Office and were so excited to get this set for such a good price!

5 out of 5 stars "It's not Gay!".......2007-06-21

It took a few months of not watching it for me to realize how funny it was, but I bought it on whim, remembering the stapler in the jello gag, and I sure am glad I did! It is teious and frequently awkward to watch, but David Brent is somehow the most intolerably annoying yet totally loveable character on TV. Somehow the writers were able to forge a love hate relationshup with the viewers and Ricky Gervais. The whole show is hilarious, but they somehow manage to squeeze in a wonderful love story, and the XMas special is a key piece to this. I have not yet watched tthe American Version, I'm afraid I will like it, but I'm afraid It might make me like it less!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best series I've seen........2007-06-15

The actors in this series have mastered the "awkward moment." As hard as it is to watch sometimes, this show is incredibly charming, funny and smart. By the last few episodes, you will have a special fondness for all the characters--even the "unlikeable" ones.

Absolutely brilliant.

3 out of 5 stars Not as funny as it is novel.......2007-05-12

The characters do not push the envelop of their silliness and stupidity. Of course they are dunces, but they still run part of a business. The plots were just not fulfilling and the end was uneventful. Monty Python is different and superior. If you have unlimited funs add this to your library. If not, rent it from the store because you will not want to watch it again. I hear the American version is better, but I have not seen it.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-05-06

anyone who takes the time to order the whole series probably pretty much knows how ingenious this show is. For those of us stateside this import might have flown under the radar at first. Believe me this is comedy at its best.
Ricky Gervais as David Brent is pure comic gold; and a graet actor to boot.
You really care about the charachters and will be loving it by the end moments of the "Office Special".

Enjoy

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-06-27

I'm afraid Dante's Cove is not what I expected. Some things are OK, but in general I found it a bit boring, predictable and naive. The way in which characters dress, act, the way their bodies look is all too artificial. Even the sex scenes, too frecquent, extremely choreographic, extremely artificial. The idea is very good, though, but the development is weak, sometimes inconsistent. Yes, it is full of handsome people who seem to live a paradise-like live, but it is too unreal, even for a TV-Show on ghosts and witchcraft. Something funny is the fact that in some scenes you can see full frontal nudity, but in others it seems they are trying to hide it the usual way...

3 out of 5 stars Move Over Melros Place.......2007-06-18

The acting is not the best so they made up with hot guys and girls with great bodies. The story line is better then the acting. I would not consider this a season!

1 out of 5 stars Faulty Discs.......2007-06-15

I'm having the same problem as an earlier reviewer .. I'm on my second set and can't get the first disc to play in any DVD player. What's up with that?

5 out of 5 stars Great entertainment, bad DVD?.......2007-06-13

I had not seen Dante's Cove before ordering it from Amazon, and while I agree the acting leaves much to be desired, it was lots of fun to watch.

The only problem is that Disc 1 of the first season seems to have some problems. It skips and freezes constantly, getting worse as you get further into the disc. This happens on 3 separate DVD players, plus my computer, so I'm pretty sure it's the disc. Amazon replaced the set for me, but the replacement has the same problems. I'm wondering if anyone else is having problems like this? I'd sure like to know. Unfortunately I may have to return both copies to Amazon for a refund. Maybe I'll have better luck if I purchase from someone else, assuming Amazon just got a bad batch.

1 out of 5 stars Never read reviews.......2007-06-06

While trawling through Amazon films I chanced across "Dante's Cove", stupidly I read the reviews and thought 'this looks interesting' how wrong I was. This is truly appalling. Risible story line, incredibly bad acting (especially in the 'lesbian' scenes). The dialogue was laughable, luckily I could fast forward in the hope it would get better, unfortunately it never did, AND THEY MADE A SECORD SERIES!
I despair of American t.v. when they can produce this rubbish, I know it is fantasy, but no one has relationships like this, no one makes love like this, producers, look at what is made across the water in the U.K. the original "Queer as folk" or "In the line of beauty" where the sex shown (although not explicit) had passion and not soft focus (and lack of continuity in the beach scenes - check out the outfits that conntinually change), or look at the first two series of 'Tales in the City' for quality (forget the last series - just like the books that went down hill). Do not waste your money on this, complain bitterly if you did and pray that someone, somewhere has the balls to make a(even fantasy)series about gay men that we can relate to in some form or another. Finally I was forced to give this a one star rating as it would not accept a no star.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't be more excited.......2007-06-27

I absolutely loved it. As soon as I recieved I watched the entire first season. The only problem that I have is that in some parts it freezes like from a scratch but it isn't too bad. Love shopping at amazon

5 out of 5 stars Perfect purchase.......2007-06-27

I bought the box set as a gift for my boyfriend, and he was really pleased with it. The box is strong enough to have the DVDs, the booklet is very useful, and also when you play a DVD in you computer a software from WB can be installed automatically so you can watch the episodes using that program. Regarding the quality of the DVDs, I have no complaints, the image is good, the sound too, plus you have different language subtitles to practice with. And one more thing, I was afraid that the box would be delived to me practically in pieces because of the shipment period (two weeks and a bit more)and because of some review I read, but it was in perfect conditions. You should definitely buy this Product!

5 out of 5 stars This is automatic brownie points with your lady!!.......2007-06-27

I can't say I was a fan of the show in the beginning of its run. I tend to watch more cartoons than sitcoms. When I first met my girlfriend, she got me into watching this show. At first I only watched it because that meant I got to sit and hold her for 30 minutes; but the show kinda grew on me.

I like friends, and even though they didn't really have any other RACES on the show as regulars, you could find a piece of yourself in at least one of the six characters.

I am definately Chandler.

5 out of 5 stars Oh My God! .......2007-06-25

Excellent option if you want to have all ten seasons at the same time, and at a very cheap price. It was delivered in ten days here to Mexico. And yes, it does have spanish subtitles.

5 out of 5 stars I have one question.......2007-06-25

I'm fron guatemala, and I want to know if the DVD contains subtitles in spanish, please someone who get the collection answer me!!

Amazon.com essential video

Basil Fawlty, as created and performed by John Cleese, is the rudest, most boorish, most hilariously obnoxious man on the face of the planet. What a natural for a TV sitcom! His screen wife, Sybil (Prunella Scales), put it best in the episode "The Psychiatrist": "You're either crawling all over them, licking their boots, or spitting poison at them like some Benzedrine puff adder." He mockingly replies, "Just trying to enjoy myself, dear." With his gangly frame and contortionist abilities, Cleese brilliantly punctuates Basil's outrageous faux pas with absurd gymnastics and turns Three Stooges-style pokes and kicks into a slapstick ballet. Scales's Sybil is the genial but obliviously chatty voice of reason and Andrew Sachs mangles the English language as the Spanish bellhop Manuel, whose struggles with simple directions results in comic lunacy reminiscent of Robert Benigni. After a six-episode run in 1975, Cleese and cowriter and costar Connie Booth (who plays Polly, the maid all too often pulled into Basil's ridiculous plans) reunited the cast in 1979 for another six episodes without missing a punch line. The four-volume collection contains all 12 shows, interspersed with interview segments featuring Cleese discussing the genesis of the series and anecdotes about the individual episodes. Remember to watch the opening credits of each show to spot the creative misspellings on the hotel sign (my favorite: "Fatty Owls"). --Sean Axmaker
