Garry Marshall's 1988 drama about a 30-year friendship between two women, one wealthy (Barbara Hershey) and the other (Bette Midler) seeking her fortune in show business, is well written (based on the novel by Iris Rainer Dart) and nicely textured in its contrast between the characters' separate destinies. When Hershey becomes ill with cancer, the film takes a predictably sentimental course, yet Marshall brings out the best in both actresses and catches some very fine drama. The film is a little too long, perhaps, but overall it is a fine experience. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars A Repeater.......2007-05-27

I absolutely love this movie!!!! It is one of a few movies that I can watch over and over and over and over again, and never get tired of it. Both Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey gave magnificent performances, portraying what a true, loving friendship is all about. I love the scene when CC tells Hillary she ended their friendship and didn't even tell her. I know exactly how that feels (RC). And, the producers were point on in picking Mayim Bialik to play the young CC, she was perfect match. I get misty everytime, at the same scenes. Wonderful acting of a wonderful story!!

I love this movie! This is a great chick flick and best friend (BF) flick. I cry everytime I watch it!

5 out of 5 stars Beaches.......2007-01-12

Love this movie. Very emotional. I owned it on VHS and eventually I played it so often I ended up replacing it on DVD. I always thought Bette Midler had a great voice, but the story very much outwayed any singing. I cry a little everytime I watch it. It will always be a part of my movie collection.

Tyler Perry, impresario of the gospel theater circuit, brings his gun-toting granny-drag persona Madea back to the big screen in Madea's Family Reunion, a sequel to the surprise hit Diary of a Mad Black Woman. In addition to being saddled with an unruly foster teen (Keke Palmer, The Wool Cap), Madea has two troubled nieces: Lisa (Rochelle Aytes, White Chicks), who's engaged to an abusive and controlling investment banker (Blair Underwood, Something New); and Vanessa (Lisa Arrindell Anderson, The Second Chance), who can't open herself to the affection of a bus driver/artist (Boris Kodjoe, The Gospel) because of childhood abuse. Wreaking havoc on both of their lives is their mother Victoria (Lynn Whitfield, Eve's Bayou, in delirious wicked witch mode). Like Madea's previous outing, Madea's Family Reunion may induce mental whiplash--the movie zips from a discussion of flatulence to a jazz-backed poetry reading to domestic violence (Underwood, perhaps eager to leave his bland good-guy image behind, is genuinely scary), or from an act of horrific revenge to a staggeringly gaudy wedding. Though schizophrenic and morally questionable (beating an adult women is clearly wrong, but whipping a child with a belt in the name of tough love is apparently good), the movie is definitely unpredictable and never dull. Also featuring Cicely Tyson (Because of Winn-Dixie) and the poet Maya Angelou. --Bret Fetzer

Tyler Perry hits the bullseye again. This item has been given by me to 6 of my friends. We can all learn something from writing of this quality and scope.

3 out of 5 stars Tyler is the man........2007-05-31

The moive was generally good fun and the message pretty clear. I personally still prefer Diary of a Mad Black Woman but I am certainly looking to seeing Daddy's Little Girl.

5 out of 5 stars great.......2007-05-20

i enjoyed every single moment of this movie and it got here in a very timely manner

5 out of 5 stars Hillarious.......2007-05-14

Perfect "chick flick". It makes you laugh, then you get mad, then you cry, then you're happy again. The movie makes fun of some old worn out sterotypes, then it breaks them by showing people who are more true to life than people's perceptions.

Perfect to the very end. I rarely like a movie well enough to purchase it. I'm so glad I bought this one.

5 out of 5 stars New Perry Fan.......2007-04-16

After seeing Diary of a Mad Black woman, I decided to give this movie a spin and I'm glad I did. The number one thing I'm surprised by is Perry's deep subject matters and at the heart of his message about the power of forgiveness. This is not some hammy Lawrence movie like Big Momma's house. It's a drama and a comedy and I don't think it was unbalanced at all. Whenever things get too serious, Madea would show up and deliver the message with a laugh. For me it was great to see Cicely Tyson, Dr. Maya Angelou and Lynn Whitfield working together. Perry has found a good thing and I wish him nothing but continue success. Highly Recommended.

For anyone who views holiday gatherings with equal parts joy and dread, The Family Stone offers plenty of comedy to identify with. Writer-director Thomas Bezucha's slapstick premise begins when Everett (Dermot Mulroney) brings his fiancé Meredith (Sarah Jessica Parker) home to meet his family for Christmas. It's an instant disaster when parents Sybil (Diane Keaton) and Kelly (Craig T. Nelson) agree with their gay, deaf son Thad (Ty Giordano, who is actually hearing impaired), pot-smoking son Ben (Luke Wilson) and daughters Amy (Rachel McAdams) and Susannah (Elizabeth Reaser) that Meredith is way too uptight to be welcomed into their family. Meredith recruits her sister Julie (Claire Danes) to help her thaw the Stone family cold front, and after building a solid emotional foundation for his holiday comedy, Bezucha starts to stack the deck with plot developments that, while heartwarming, border on the absurd. You either go with the movie's flow or you don't, and with this appealing cast (featuring some really nice work by Keaton, Nelson, Parker and Danes) it's easy to forgive Bezucha's unlikely blend of yuletide cheer, petty animosities, and romantic tables turned in the blink of an eye. Toss in a case of terminal illness and you've got a sad-happy tearjerker that works in spite of itself. If you don't recognize at least part of your own holiday clan in The Family Stone, you probably haven't been paying attention. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars The family Stone.......2007-06-08

This movie has a great cast and is funny and serious at the same time, has a great family story that is typical of todays families that seem to get together only once or twice a year. I have watched it several times already and have enjoy it each time I watch it.

2 out of 5 stars Outrageous.......2007-05-28

With 167 reviews in the can already, I can only say that I really hated this movie. Thankfully, I saw it on DVD and was able to stop whenever I wanted, which was often. The movie was simply overdone to the point of viewer exhaustion. If you have to see it, rent it or catch it on a movie channel. Don't waste your money on this bad flick.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, quirky, unexpectedly touching film.......2007-05-23

Anybody who has a family that is "different" or has had to go through hard times together will appreciate this movie. All of the reviews that spoke about this movie being "unrealistic" should really get a clue. Realistic is very relative (there are some families where the kids go nuts and murder the parents - would that have been more realistic?). I thought the family dynamics in this film were excellent and well-acted.

It is easy to see why the family Stone doesn't like the eldest son's prospective fiance, Meredith (played by SJP to a "T"), because in the beginning she is so, well, unlikeable! Its easy to believe that the family's opinion of Meredith is so heavily influenced by the youngest daughter Amy (played by my favorite actress Rachel McAdams, and anyone who has said, "who is she" should see the amazing movie "The Notebook"), who met Meredith at a prior time and didn't like her. Why? Because how many times has your sister/brother/daughter gone on about a person that they don't like and has made you dislike them? This is because you tend to side with the person, who, DUH, you've known all your life as opposed to someone you've never even met.

Some of the plot lines may have been a bit far-fetched, i.e. the brother falling for his girlfriend's sister and the girlfriend falling for her boyfriend's brother in the matter of a day. But what this really meant to illustrate, is, that a) you never know when you are going to find true love b) you shouldn't walk away from it just because it may not be the perfect timing c)life is too short to spend it with the wrong person. I thought the scene with Meredith's sister Julie (played by Claire Danes who looked beautiful in this movie) and Everett (the oldest son) where she talks about the man with the "hole in his heart" is really a foreshadowing metaphor for Everett, who is with Meredith but is obviously walking around with a big hole in his heart that needs to be filled.

Addressing the terminal illness part - if you watched the movie you know that the mother is dying of breast cancer (DUH for all the people who asked, "what kind of cancer is she even dying from anyway"). The scene that OBVIOUSLY demonstrates that is when she opens her shirt to reveal her mastectomy scar. While some people were offended by that, the fact that she is not ashamed of this disfigurement and that her husband isn't turned off by it just demonstrates the depth of their love for each other. Other reviews have remarked that well, she looked healthy, which I think is just an absurd remark. The movie didn't show her on a treadmill for God's sakes. It even shows her napping in the middle of the day. People are so over-critical. I'm sure nobody wanted to be beat over the head with overwrought scenes of the mother showing how ill she was. Plus she was trying to keep it a secret from her children.

The last scene that I'm going to get on my soapbox about is the Christmas Eve dinner scene. The one where Meredith makes the well-intentioned but cruel remark about the gay son Thad not being "normal" and being "challenged" because of his sexual orientation. People are outraged because they thought the family's reaction to her statement was too mean. And I challenge everyone who thinks that to put themselves in that family's shoes. I have a deaf mother and I am fiercely overprotective of her, even to a fault. Our culture is not friendly to people who are different - everyone knows that. Is it so hard to believe that a close-knit family like the stones would overreact when an outsider criticizes a family member? Especially one that has probably had to deal with more than his share throughout his life?

Sorry for the novel. I just get so irritated when people criticize things without truly thinking it through. This is an excellent movie and I highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars zero.......2007-05-04

This movie went in the garbage because that is what it was. If you love God , this is not a movie for you.

4 out of 5 stars What a Movie.......2007-04-04

Although marketed to be another awkward comedy like what poor Ben Stiller had to face in Meet the Parents, The Family Stone is anything, but simply eccentric. Yes, the fiance is uptight, grating and at times humorless, but this movie is far less about uncomfortable comedy than about uncomfortable reality. In truth, its an intense drama about life, love, growing up, growing old and facing death with only your family(as dysfunctional as everyone's are)to hold it all back with you. Superb performances from the unconventional cast and Diane Keaton's character is especially nuanced and heart-breaking in her depth and courage.

In truth, its an intense drama about life, love, growing up, growing old and facing death with only your family(as dysfunctional as everyone's are)to hold it all back with you. Superb performances from the unconventional cast and Diane Keaton's character is especially nuanced and heart-breaking in her depth and courage.

To honor a childhood oath, three friends (Seth Green from Austin Powers and Party Monster, Matthew Lillard from SLC Punk and Scooby Doo, and newcomer Dax Shepard) head into the Oregon wilderness in search of lost treasure. After grappling with a bear, whitewater rapids, backwoods psychopaths, beautiful eco-terrorists, homophobia, and a very hairy Burt Reynolds, the boys face their fears and learn valuable life lessons about treasuring friendship and stuff. Dude, it's totally, like, Deliverance for the Gen-Y slacker set! Admittedly, it falls a bit short as a meditation on masculinity, but teen audiences will find plenty to enjoy. The interplay among Green, Lillard, and Shepard has a rambunctious enthusiasm that overcomes the predictability of the script. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable, Though Crude Comedy........2007-01-25

Three friends; Tom (Dax Shepard), Jerry (Matthew Lillard), and Dan (Seth Green), come together after the death of one of their closest childhood friends, Billy. Billy had been obsessed with uncovering nearly $200,000 that famed highjacker D.B. Cooper (an actual real life criminal) supposedly hid somewhere in the wood of Oregon. Partly out of adventure and partly as a final farewell gesture to Billy, the three young men leave for a multi-day canoeing trip down the Colombia River to see if they can find the object (the money) of Billy's obsession. The river turns out to be the least of the men's worries as they encounter one strange encounter after another: illegal DELIVERANCE-type pot farmers, an angry sheriff, giant black bears, environment-loving tree-living women, and one expert woodsman who looks an awful lot like Burt Reynolds.

When I first watched WITHOUT A PADDLE, I didn't think I was going to like it. I like Matthew Lillard and Seth Green, but wasn't a big fan of Dax Shepard. The plot didn't sound all that good to me and I was concerned with some of the content warnings. Surprisingly, WITHOUT A PADDLE wasn't too bad of a movie. Yes, there is pot smoking done for comic affect. Yes, there is sexual innuendo. Yes, there are a lot of crude jokes. And yes, once the movie gets started much of it is nonsensical and seems like something out of a Benny Hill sketch or a Monty Python movie. But, I actually enjoyed the movie. It made me laugh and after I finished it I realized that I had a good time.

Some of this might be due to the set up of the film. The introductory backstory about the characters and their friendship growing up does a wonderful job making the audience care about the characters and setting up the rest of the picture. When the movie turns into a Bizzaro World version of STAND BY ME, things don't seem as insane as they should. The pacing of the movie also helps. There are times the film could drag, but it never does. The characters have a purpose and they will fulfill that purpose even if it kills them. Once the boys leave for their trip it's one exciting and often humorous event after another.

WITHOUT A PADDLE isn't a movie for children, which is a shame. If some of the content would have been toned down a bit, it would have been a movie that most family members could enjoy. Nevertheless, it is a good movie that teenagers on up can enjoy if they just give it a chance.

Laughed like crazy! Each time I watch it I pick up a line or two that I missed before and keep on laughing. Love the message about time -- one of my favorite life lessons. As a result, try to use my time more wisely with the people I care about. I recommend this movie to everyone.

The producers of the American Pie movies pushed their luck with a third slice of their lucrative raunchy comedy franchise, and American Wedding cooked up surprisingly well. It's the sourest serving of Pie, with half of the original cast missing, and there's something undeniably desperate about comedic highlights (involving dog poop, a lusty old lady, two strippers to offset the absence of Shannon Elizabeth, and the ill-advised use of a trimming razor) that arise more from obligation than inspiration, on the assumption that another penile mishap is guaranteed to please. And yet, that's just what this movie does for devoted Pie-munchers: It gives 'em what they want, especially when the notorious Stifler (Seann William Scott) nearly ruins the frantic nuptials of Jim (Jason Biggs) and his band-camping sweetheart Michelle (Alyson Hannigan). Eugene Levy and Eddie Kaye Thomas also return for some reliable comic relief, but the one who's laughing most is three-time Pie writer Adam Herz--laughing loudly and often, all the way to the bank. --Jeff Shannon

I enjoyed watching this movie. Lots of laughs and sophomoric fun that you've come to expect from watching all the movies in the American Pie series! Yes, this movie is a bit predictable, but nonetheless entertaining to watch.

It is nice to see Jim and Michelle get married in this movie and all the funny things that happen and go wrong along the way in planning for the wedding!

This is almost as funny as American Pie and American Pie 2, but the humor is getting more than a little predictable. However, I am still laughing so 4 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Still going strong!.......2006-08-12

American Wedding is so far the funniest installment to the trilogy. This one finds Jim and Michelle getting married, opening with what I've found to be the naughtiest scene I've ever seen take place in a resturant.Stifler brings more laughs to the screen as Stifler, who thinks the first thing that comes to his mind when he thinks of weddings:Bachelor party! The biggest scene, basically,is the bechelor party scene, where a gay guy Jim and his pals met in a gay bar brings a couple of foreign strippers to Jim's house and they party for a while, until it's busted up by the early return of Jim and Michelle's parents.Laughs and gut-busting humor ensue as the pals get caught up in what might be the best film in the trilogy.

Marking a welcome return to the breezy style of Thelma & Louise, Ridley Scott's Matchstick Men reminds us that the director of Gladiator is equally adept with quirky comedies and offbeat characters. Smoothly adapted from the novel by Eric Garcia and set amidst the sunlit, 1950s-style architecture of L.A.'s San Fernando Valley, this gently dramatic comedy centers on Roy (Nicolas Cage), a divorcée whose career as a con artist is complicated by: (1) his ongoing struggle with obsessive compulsive disorder, which manifests itself through various quirks and rituals; (2) a wily partner (Sam Rockwell) whose criminal ambitions are greater than Roy suspects; and (3) the arrival of 14-year-old Angela (Alison Lohman), claiming to be the daughter he's never known. Turns out she's got a knack for dad's profession, and that turns Matchstick Men into a multilayered comedy with unexpected twists and surprising revelations. To say more would spoil the fun; suffice it to say that Hans Zimmer's playful score and a Sinatra-laced soundtrack are perfect complements to Cage's engaging eccentricities. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Matchstick Men Has A Great Twist Ending..........2007-06-11

Matchstick Men is a widescreen DVD adapted from the Eric Garcia novel of the same name. The movie stars Nicolas Cage and his close friend Sam Rockwell, and introduces audiences to Alison Lohman. The disc also includes some nice extras, such as Tricks of the Trade: Making Matchstick Men.

A glance at early scenes reveals Roy Waller (Cage) as a conman with OCD. He's partnered with Frank (Rockwell) -- both pose as FBI to solicit account numbers and signatures to drain their marks. Franks adverse reaction to pills nearly sinks them. Frank also visits the supermarket to see Kathy (Kelley.)

The routine Roy follows is disrupted when his medication falls down the drain at the kitchen sink and his condition confines him to the house. His source for the pills has also fled town; he needs a new shrink to write prescriptions. This is how we meet Dr. Harris Klein (Altman.)

Caught in the plight of talking to Klein to score pills, Roy reveals details of an old marriage -- and that he may have a child he's never seen. The good doctor intervenes, and after some phone calls he arranges a meeting between twelve year old daughter Angela (Lohman) and Roy.

His first meeting with the girl clicks, but she ruins a flimflam when she materializes on Roy's doorstep. He claims he's an antiques dealer, but leaving her alone in his house allows snooping (bundled cash, guns!) that uncovers lies. Frank and Roy also ensnare Chuck Frechette (McGill) at the Spearmint Rhino.

Some of the outstanding scenes in Matchstick Men occur only after Angela and Roy get into an argument, and she persuades him to teach her a con. He explains the system of the con this way: 1. Never work near where you live, 2. Don't write anything down, and 3. Be flexible.

The father and daughter pull off the con effortlessly, after visiting a convenience store (for a lottery ticket) and the laundromat to find a mark. There they run into a Little Old Lady (Grant) whom Angela quickly convinces to split the proceeds with because she's technically too young to gamble legally.

In case you're worried, Roy makes his daughter return the money. The next several chapters find Frank and Roy trying to finalize a currency conversion scam they've plotted against strip-club owner Chuck. Roy also discovers that having a daughter has made him more attractive to Kathy, the sexy supermarket checkout woman.

Crafty or not, when Roy rips Chuck off at the airport (using Angela as a distraction) things turn dicey. A dangerous chase through the parking garage ensues. Unfortunately, Angela was captured on CCTV in the bar; Roy also discovers her juvenile record after quizzing. Scared, Roy dumps Angela at her mother's.

Klein comes into play again when Roy suffers another harrying OCD attack, and he's run out of pills. Since Klein is out of the office on weekends, Roy makes a mad dash to the DeSoto Pharmacy looking for Prefex tablets. The altercation with the pharmacists is one pinnacle of this DVD.

Most of the cons pulled by Roy are safe, but after he's scammed Chuck out of $[...], Chuck turns up in Roy's tidy living room with a pistol pointed at Angela and Roy, and a bloodied, beaten Frank in tow. When a gun goes off, it's unbelievable who pulls the trigger.

Essentially what happens next is that Chuck gets shot -- by Angela. Roy protects her by putting her in a car headed to her mother's, driven by Frank, with instructions for Frank to never return, because he intends to drive Chuck to the hospital and take the rap for the shooting.

Now that you've heard about this heartwarming film with a wonderfully human twist ending, I hope you buy, rent or seek it out. Matchstick Men has proved to be one of Cage's more underappreciated efforts -- that's unfair since the emotion and the storytelling were so obviously clear. This DVD was really entertaining!

3 out of 5 stars Matchstick Men (Includes CD Soundtrack).......2007-06-08

I bought this really for the CD soundtrack. I gave the movie to my grown children for thier collection. Movie was a 2 or 3 in my book, but the music stood out for me!

5 out of 5 stars Another of Cages great preformances.......2007-05-09

This movie is another one of those clever movies that keeps your mind sharp, If you liked any of the Oceans movies you will love this one.

4 out of 5 stars It's nice to see that Nicolas Cage & Ridley Scott can still make a good film.......2007-02-10

"Matchstick Men" may not have been a box office success (compare it to the total gross of "National Treasure" [Cage's next film] and "Kingdom of Heaven" [Scott's next film]), but it certainly is one of the better-crafted & better-acted films to be associated with either of these men. I was beginning to wonder if Cage could ever repeat a performance like what he did in "Leaving Las Vegas." While his obsessive-compulsive con-man may not be the disaster along the lines of a suicidal alcoholic, he comes close with the impact he makes on the viewer. This could easily have veered into caricature, but Cage creates a creditable & believable obsessive-compulsive.

Perhaps this could be classified as a comedy, but it has an awfully bittersweet quality to it which makes the movie difficult to categorize with any ease. The characters of Roy & Angela (a very very good performance by Alison Lohman, who is entirely believable as a 14-year-old) are real enough to cause the viewer to have a vested interest in their ultimate fate, as the movie takes numerous twists & turns.

Ridley Scott did quite a good job at crafting a movie that avoids being too obvious, and which flows along nicely, maintaining viewer interest throughout. This was a very satisfying film, through & through...I wish these two guys could make more like this.

1 out of 5 stars Too many flaws, lacking intensity, a wreck, too TV-like.......2007-02-04

MATCHSTICK MEN, released in 2003, has star Nicolas Cage as one of
its only big-name actors, obviously bringing credibility, financial
support, and leadership to the project. And his acting is standard
fare, for what we've come to expect from Cage, solid acting, and a
full day's pay for an honest day's work.

At the same time, several conclusions can be drawn from this movie.
The first, is that it severely lacks intensity in terms of the
story, and much of the supporting acting. Secondly, it is filmed,
and the story unfolds, much like in a low budget TV production,
despite some quality filming elements, from time to time. Third,
that creating, writing a script, and filming it, takes a lot of hard
work, and rare talent, and only a small percentage of pictures
actually are successful and leave an impression of average to high
quality; it's tough work, and the effort must not be underestimated.
What occurs with MATCHSTICK MEN, is that the entire movie is a mess
from the story point of view, and from a spectator's view too.

Other elements, than those mentioned, are perhaps more subjective,
and I won't hold it against the makers, such as weaving a grown-man
and child relationship, into a story featuring a small time grifter,
played by Cage, who himself, doesn't really come across, in terms of
personality, as one, as compared to, perhaps, other movies. I think
the child-grown man relation was an absurd invention.

Another absurd device, used in this movie, is that it seems to
literally serve an advertisement for psychotherapy, for Pfizer and
other pharmaceutical companies, considering the emphasis of this
movie on the leading perpetrator taking pills throughout the 90
mins.

Another unnecessary element, was soliciting sympathy for the main
grifter, on account of his own personal emotional demons, and
physical illnesses, and his need to take medication constantly, for
psychological remorse on his activities.

All these elements, combined with a confused story, add up as a
wreck in terms of a movie, despite all the best, hard work and best
intentions, from Cage and other actors, in trying to make this
project appealing. The script simply had too many flaws, and the
filming too much TV-like, and the actors, lacking intensity,
throughout. Not a keeper, by any means.

This huge 1993 hit for Robin Williams and director Chris Columbus (Home Alone), based on a novel called Alias Madame Doubtfire by Anne Fine, stars Williams as a loving but flaky father estranged from his frustrated wife (Sally Field). Devastated by a court order limiting his time with the children, Williams's character disguises himself as a warm, old British nanny who becomes the kids' best friend. As with Dustin Hoffman's performance in Tootsie, Williams's drag act--buried under layers of latex and padding--is the show, and everything and everyone else on screen serves his sometimes frantic role. Since that's the case, it's fortunate that Williams is Williams, and his performance is terribly funny at times and exceptionally believable in those scenes where his character misses his children. Playing Williams's brother, a professional makeup artist, Harvey Fierstein has a good support role in a bright sequence where he tries a number of feminine looks on Williams before settling on Mrs. Doubtfire's visage. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars A really entertaining movie!.......2007-06-18

Wow! Has it really been 14 years since this movie came out? I remember when I was younger, this was one of my favorite movies. Even today, this movie is still entertaining and I'm not bored with it thusfar.

So what's this movie about? The movie starts out when Daniel Hibbard (played by Robin Williams) decides to throw a big birthday party for his son. His son and two other kids warn him that their mother, Daniel's wife, Miranda, will be upset if she finds out. Daniel throws the party anyway because he didn't expect her to be home for another few hours. Miranda comes home early and finds her house destroyed. Daniel and Miranda have a nasty fight which ultimately leads to a divorce. During the divorce hearing, Daniel gets delivered a blow when the judge gives sole custody of the kids to Miranda with occasional visits given to Daniel. The rest of the movie has Daniel doing whatever it takes to get more time with his kids, including dressing up as a woman and becoming Miranda's maid/babysitter.

So what's to like about this movie? First of all, the storyline is cute. Yes, there's quite a few movies that deal with divorce and overcoming it but movie comes with a twist. Second, although this movie is meant to be a comedy, there's a ton of emotion involved also. Throughout the entire movie, you're rooting for Daniel to get over his many obstacles so that he can get partial custody of the kids. Third, as mentioned above, there are lot of funny scenes. Robin Williams is hilarious and he was made for this role.

And what's not to like? Not much. Don't go into this movie expecting it be Oscar-worthy. It's just a funny, entertaining movie that will pass a couple of hours on a lazy Sunday.

If you're looking for a good movie to watch with your kids or if you want a no frills, comedy to watch with a couple of friends, this movie is a great choice!

4 out of 5 stars IT'S NO TOOTSIE, BUT STILL VERY GOOD!.......2007-04-12

When I first saw the trailer for this film way back when, I though oh no! "Tootsie" Rip Off! I have seen this movie many times and It gets better with repeat viewings. A very smart and funny comedy with a lot of heart. The DVD transfer on the widescreen edition is good with some good extras.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Williams at his finest (and funniest).......2006-10-05

Why Robin Williams can't get an Oscar nod for his specialty (comedy) is beyond me. He's been nominated numerous times, and actually won, for his dramatic roles, but to me Williams will always shine much brighter when making us laugh. To me, arguably his greatest role was that of Daniel Hillard, a very irresponsible married man, father of three, whose wife Miranda (Field) finally has enough and puts him out. In an attempt to see more of his children he disguises himself as Mrs. Euphegenia Doubtfire, an elderly woman who is hired to take care of the children while their mother is at work. William's is genius as he frantically switches between Daniel and Euphegenia, trying to, through Mrs. Doubtfire, win back his wife and deter her from Stu (Bosnan), the new man in her life. Hysterical from start to finish, `Mrs. Doubtfire' is a sure fire crowd pleaser.
