Sandra Bernhard's dazzling one-woman show comes to video after a wildly successful Broadway run and national tour that virtually jump-started her career after a low-key decade of writing books and making various television appearances (Roseanne). Less structured and formal than her previous film, the cult classic Without You I'm Nothing, I'm Still Here... Damn It! catches La Diva Sandra in San Francisco, some six months pregnant and laying waste to the cultural detritus of the '90s. Nothing and no one emerges unscathed from Bernhard's lacerating wit as she paints a vast, swirling portrait of today's media-saturated landscape. This breathtaking ride showcases Bernhard in top form as she offers commentary on everyone from Mariah Carey to Courtney Love, as well as the waifish girl singers of Lilith Fair, to whom she offers the advice, "Just get out of that dirty bathtub for starters!" Bernhard is not afraid to call a spade a spade--and make that spade live to regret the error of its ways--but I'm Still Here... Damn It! is also about the efforts to keep your soul pure under increasingly superficial circumstances. Bernhard touches on issues of religion, self-fulfillment, bravery, and motherhood, and utilizes her stunning voice as well as her scathing wit. A tribute to Christine McVie, "Nightingale," is both a send-up and homage to the Fleetwood Mac pianist, and Bernhard ends her show with an intoxicating Moroccan prayer and a stunning cover of "Midnight Train to Georgia." And as photographed by legendary cinematographer Haskell Wexler (Medium Cool, Matewan), Bernhard is an electrical presence, beautiful and shocking at the same time. At only an hour, it's a condensed version of her show (for the full-on effect, buy the soundtrack), but amazing nonetheless. The DVD features about 30 minutes of bonus footage, including ribald observations of Rosie O'Donnell, Melanie Griffith, and Liza Minnelli, among others. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars Great Christmas Gift!, For Sandra Fans!!!!.......2006-12-26

I love Sandra Bernhard she is beyond hilarious!, on this DVD that originally was show as a HBO special, you get to see a visual of the the live performance and Sandra's funny expressions with her body movement and face. Let's not forget the outrageous outfit she wears on here, the dress was 100% see through not to mention she was about 5-6 months pregnant too. For some people that dress might be offensive, but to Sandra's fans it's hilarious!. This is a different live performance then the cd album of the same name. This was not filmed on Valentine's day as Sandra saids on the cd album version and "Walk Tall" is also not on here, but it is all the same very funny!, with alot of unseen footage that was not on the cd album or the broadcast version like when Sandra talks about Melanie Griffith's fake lips or Rosie O' Donnell's sexuality and the funniest on the unseen footage is "Diva Moments". for me I haven't seen this in a couple of years since it's first debuted on HBO, and today for Christmas I recieved it as the perfect gift of Sandra Bernhard.

1 out of 5 stars KEPT WAITING FOR SOMETHING FUNNY TO BE SAID.......2005-10-23

THIS DVD WASNT WHAT I EXPECTED AT ALL. THE HUMOR IS STRICTLY HOLLYWOOD GOSSIP CRAP, WITH NOTHING THAT RELATES TO THE AVERAGE FOLK. I WAS KIND OF DISGUSTED BY A COMPLETELY SEE THRU DRESS, ESPECIALLY ON A PREGNANT WOMEN. I DIDNT ORDER FOR THAT KIND OF THING. I WANTED COMEDY, AND THIS AINT IT. IRREVERENT IS ONE THING, REVOLTING IS ANOTHER. I NEVER LAUGHED ONCE DURING THIS DVD. THE HUMOR ALMOST STRICTLY PERTAINED TO HOLLYWOOD PERSONALITIES AND THEIR EXPLOITS (WHICH I NEVER FIND THAT ENTERTAINING). SHE DOES HAVE A GOOD SINGING VOICE, BUT I DIDNT ORDER FOR SINGING EITHER. YOU WONT FIND MUCH COMEDY HERE. JEWEL

3 out of 5 stars Where is 'Walk Tall' (the opening scene)?.......2004-10-27

This is a great DVD, mostly hilarious and at times touching. However they have excluded the opening song called 'Walk Tall' which is kind of a monologue through song. It's great and shows just how talented and versatile Sandra is. The exclusion is unfortunate because it's the best part of the show. 'Walk Tall' is available on the CD and I recommend that everyone purchase that so you can hear this great opening. Otherwise, I highly recommend this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars A good way to unwind after a horrible day.......2004-02-27

I have seen this DVD perhaps 10 times since I bought it this past Christmastime and I'll probrably see it again tonight since I'm thinking about it. You have to be a Bernhard fan to really appreciate the sarcastic wit of hers and her take on society, politics and celebrities, albeit how it effects her in the world that she lives in. The fact that this HBO special filming of her night club act was filmed while she was very pregnant (I'm guessing 9-1/2 months by the shape of her physique) and wearing a rather see thru dress (due to club lighting), shows that she has absolutely no shame and we are all the better for it. Spending the hour just listening to her puts my miserable life into perspective (well at least for an hour anyway). Make sure you see the extras with her dozen or so (1 minute long) comments on different subjects and people (Mother Teresa and her house painter are favorites). She sings too! I loved the tribute to Giani Versace (a song on how the tragedy effected the lives and more importantly, the careers of the grieving supermodels left behind on the catwalk) and the cover of "Midnight train to Georgia" just brings a tear to my eye every time- who!! who!! Get the incense and bottle of vodka ready, and enjoy the sights and sounds of Miss Sandra Bernhard!

5 out of 5 stars Neil and Chris' finest hour..........2005-12-01

I first saw this movie in the early 90s. I remember my mom and I going to Blockbuster and having to special order it and paying about $70!

This movie is nothing short of brilliant. Considering how well educated Neil and Chris are, it's not a surprise they would make a movie like this. It has a lot of tidbits that well rounded and intelligent individuals should have no problem picking up on. I've been a diehard PSB fan for 20 years, ever since I saw West End Girls on MTV. So I'm a biased opinion.

Anyway, the diner scene with the puppet is sheer briliance. What was kind of sad about this movie, was it was shot before the terrible Kings Cross underground bombing. Towards the end of the movie, you see Kings Cross exploding. It was a political statement about the IRA, et al and it rang prophetic. They got a lot of flack for leaving that in, but I'm glad they didn't take it out.

I also think one of the best scenes is when Neil and Chris are haggling with the car dealer. Also, the hitchhiker and the Always on My Mind sequence, which was used for the music video.

I love this movie and I really wish they would release a DVD with extras. As an ardent PSB fan, this movie never gets old and I think it is already a classic. It will gain ground over time despite bombing when it was released a la Magical Mystery Tour.

5 out of 5 stars It Did Happen Here, Actually........2003-05-11

I must admit I'm not your average Pet Shop Boys fan. I have followed their career with nauseating dedication and inspite of the onslaught of almost two decades - a span that can jade even the most talented bands, I remain impressed by the 'Samurai In Autumn'. Hailing from a country that's an ex-British colony, I am an unusually ardent fan of most things British. Oh, the irony. Now, this PSB movie is almost too British, if there is such a thing. It is like a series of abstract paintings by Salvador Dali, taken off the wall and projected on to the screen in motion with the PSB hits rendering the context. This movie is quite cerebral. Prerequisites include being a fan of the Boys, and a certain amount of active grey cells. In order to savour this film, you have to be as crazy, or thereabouts, as the Pet Shop Boys themselves. I must be, because I think this is art in its purest form. I think the segment where "Two Divided By Zero" starts to shape up is brilliant - an ex-RAF pilot, still donning all his gear, trying to figure out the mathematics of division by 0 and his personal life problems, a ventriloquist pontificating on the perception of time through his dummy, a zany waitress in a restaurant where the Boys are dining are the characters who lend drama to this scene. This film will talk to you personally, and at times, emotionally, assuming your life had has had a respectable amount of hardships in it. It's not for the American club go-er [the species infesting the ever present, ever deteriorating non-culture of today's America] who thinks of thinking as an extra-curricular activity. It will make you think. If you can't, it will make you push the stop button on your VCR, as it is only available on VHS. If you can relate to Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe as I do, you will love this movie.

3 out of 5 stars Abstract Art, But If You're A Really PSB FAN...........2002-07-23

this film is funny, but a little boring at the same time, it's like a different perspective from the director (the same of "it's a sin" video) about PSB. It reflects the sense of humour of the guys, but not represent the characters at all. it's like an abstract paint, but made in movie. it's not the best PSB's work, but if you're a big fan, you must have it.

3 out of 5 stars A guilty pleasure for Pet Shop Fans.......1998-04-27

I guess I'd have to put this one in the catagory of "Art Films." It has the same sort of surreal, hard-to follow quality as the Beatles' _Magical Mystery Tour_, but offers a rare opportunity (especially for fans in the U.S., where the PSB are for the most part ignored) to see the duo in a non-video context. If I remember correctly (my copy of this video was stolen about five years ago) the story is of the "a day in the life of the Pet Shop Boys" sort and is is dotted with awkward production numbers much like McCartney's _Give My Regards to Broadstreet_. The credits open on Neil riding a bike very slowly along a beach boardwalk for the duration of the song "It Couldn't Happen Here." That's it. There is also another scene where Chris is awakened for breakast, walks down about a million flights of stairs, and sits down to eat with a cast of Monty-Pythonesque family members screaming about one thing or another. It does have a few entertaining scenes--there's an extremely amusing bit where they have the misfortune of being seated next to a ventriloquist and his dummy at a diner, and they also pick up a hitch-hiker (actual respected actor Joss Ackland) who turns out to be an ax-weilding murderer and, well... It's really hard to describe. The overall tone of the film is sullen and very plodding. Obviously, it's not something your local video store is likely to carry, but I have to admit I'd only recommend this purchase for die-hard fans who aren't going to be too crippled by the cost. END

British film historian Kevin Brownlow was all of 18 when he conceived the idea for this alternate-history film depicting what life in London would have been like if Nazi troops had conquered England in July 1940. Along with his friend and collaborator Andrew Mollo (only 16 at the time), he took eight years to piece the film together using borrowed equipment and begging scraps of film stock from established filmmakers such as Stanley Kubrick. The result owes much to Brownlow's penchant for silent films (he authored a classic text on the subject entitled The Parade's Gone By), and possibly to Italian neorealism, since the semidocumentary style bows in that direction. Good thing, too. The documentary feel captivates the viewer. The story follows an Everybrit named Pauline as she grows from complacence and resignation over the Nazi occupation of England to when she becomes a nurse for the Nazis and realizes the true horror of her and England's situation. Brownlow's pure desire for authenticity makes the film more chilling than it would otherwise have been. For instance, on the film's initial release, Jewish groups objected to a sequence involving a real-life fascist of the time, Colin Jordan, spouting his opinion of Jews and euthanasia. They feared people wouldn't pick up on the film's anti-Nazi stance, and would therefore take the comments seriously. So seven minutes of footage were cut that have now been restored, making the film scarier than ever. --Jim Gay

      Description

The story of Hitler's England. In Kevin Brownlow and Andrew Mollo's brilliant and chilling re-write of history, Germany has won World War II and Nazi troops occupy England. Pauline, an apolitical nurse, hopes only that normal life will return to England. It is only after she accepts a nursing job with the Nazis that she slowly begins to realize the horrifying reality behind the occupation. "It Happened Here" is a masterful, terrifying vision of what might have happened if the Allied effort had failed. When first shown in 1964, seven minutes of controversial material was cut by the original distributor. This is the first presentation of the complete version, digitally remastered from the original 35mm materials.

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars What if..........2005-11-23

The Germans invaded England after the English evacuation from Dunkirk in World War II? What if they conquered England and installed a wartime puppet government? What if... IT HAPPENED HERE? Or there, as the case may be. I sit an ocean and half a continent away from London as I write this, and estranged by nearly half a century from when this was made. Estranged less by time and space than by the fact that IT HAPPENED HERE simply isn't very entertaining.

The movie follows Pauline (Pauline Murray) from rural England, where she's amongst a group of citizens become combed out a partisan infested area and herded toward London. Upon reaching London she applies for work as a nurse. Which mean she has to join the Party. And wear the collaborating-with-the-enemy armband and uniform. And creep out some of her pre-war friends in the process.

IT HAPPENED HERE doesn't really make drama of the promising premise. The actors are amateurs, there's no rhythm to the story, the sound is so bad that at times it hard to understand what anyone is saying. A cool idea shot down by poor execution.

Of course, IT HAPPENED HERE'S story isn't all on the screen. Filmmakers Kevin Brownlow and Andrew Mollo began this film in the mid-50s, when both were still in their teens. The lads seem to have been profoundly affected by Roberto Rossellini's Italian Neo-realist films like `Paisà' and `Open City,' two other low budget, amateur acted movies about World War II. One source says the budget for this movie was a meager $20,000, which, even accounting for inflation, makes IT HAPPENED HERE an amazing accomplishment. Although the story could have been more compelling - for instance, the sequence with real-life fascist Colin Jordan spouting his particular brand of garbage is more ridiculous than chilling - Brownlow and Mollo do some things remarkably well. Most notably incorporating German-uniformed actors in London, imparting a strong sense of characters in a real location. Also, there are some montage sequences and fake newsreels that work very well. Although I didn't much enjoy this one, I was mightily impressed with what the young filmmakers were able to do with enough money only for equipment and film stock.

5 out of 5 stars Fairly Amazing .."What If " Scenario in WW2 Britain.........2005-07-06

If this was done on a shoe- string budget 39 years ago, one can only wonder what an updated version, in color, could be done nowadays. This 95 minute grainy black and white is sometimes just slightly hard to follow, probably only for a State Sider dealing with the "Brit" accents. Partly in documentary style, partly following a fairly naive, but good hearted nurse who finds the only way to assist her countrymen is to join the SS sponsored nursing service. Needless to say, some of her innocence is shattered. Some realistic fascist oriented discussions, funerals, reenactments of the Great War Christmas truce between the Brit and German soldiers, and some very daring battle and partisan scenes make this among the best War films ever. Shame it's not better known!

5 out of 5 stars An alternate history.......2005-05-21

On a shoestring budget in 1956, directors Kevin Brownlow-now a preeminent film historian-and Andrew Mollo began work as teenagers on their Orwellian "It Happened Here"; with the help of hundreds of volunteers, they completed the film in 1964. In 1966 United Artists released the film with seven minutes of controversial material excised. In this version, Brownlow, having regained the rights to the film, restores the cut sequence-an ad-lib speech by Colin Jordan, head of the British National Socialist movement.

Brownlow and Mollo offer an alternate history of England, a vision of England under Nazi occupation after Germany has won World War II. Their use of grainy black-and-white photography and faux newsreel footage enhances the documentary-like realism.

The story follows an apolitical nurse, Pauline. Accepting a job with the Nazis in London, she comes to apprehend the ramifications of the occupation-radio stations, movies and magazines serving as propaganda organs for the Nazis and goose-stepping schoolchildren. Pauline finds herself caught between the galvanized resistance on one side and on the other, citizens who, for the sake of a quiet life, prefer to acquiesce.

4 out of 5 stars A believable alternative history of World War II.......2005-01-04

If you liked Len Deighton's detective thriller, "SS GB", set in Nazi-conquered England, you might enjoy "It Happened Here." To my way of thinking, this black-and-white film has the feel of a documentary. Its story of one person's realization of the creeping social evil in which she now lives is at once riveting and chilling.

      4 out of 5 stars 1944 or 1984?.......2004-03-21

This movie's lack of direction actually helps it's purpose. Four stars because overrating is too common.
