When fun-loving American agents Dennis Quaid and Kathleen Turner are called back from maternity leave for a special assignment in New Orleans, the spy parents decide to skip the sitter and give their bouncing baby girl the adventure of a lifetime. There's nothing to the dumb story about a deadly arms dealer (Fiona Shaw) in the Louisiana Bayou, but you'd be hard put to find a friskier pair of doting parents. Quaid is all dimpled grins and cocky cool and Turner is the most maternal martial arts mom you've ever seen, but Stanley Tucci almost steals the film as the hot-blooded threat thug Morty ("That's Muerte!"). His macho mission of vengeance becomes pure slapstick silliness punctuated by girlish squeals of alarm. Dumb? Sure, but the deft comic direction of Herbert Ross and bubbly chemistry of Quaid and Turner make Undercover Blues far more fun that it should be. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Kathleen Turner and Dennis Quaid are "in top form [in] this winning comedy" (The Hollywood Reporter) about a couple of super spies persuaded out of maternity leave and into world-class espionage action! Co-starring Stanley Tucci, Park Overall and Tom Arnold, and set in atmospheric New Orleans, Undercover Blues is "guaranteed to leave you giddy and grateful" (The Houston Post)! Jeff and Jane Blue (Quaid and Turner) are the doting parents of a new baby girl. They also happen to be America's best chance at national security. Just as they embark on that perilous adventure known as parenting, they are asked to save the world from a treacherous arms embezzler. But are their martial-arts skills, cunning and high-tech know-how any match for a diabolic terrorist and aten-pound tyrant?
Customer Reviews:
A Keeper!.......2007-05-14
This is one of our favorite comedies. We quote lines from it all the time; "I saw it on PB-eus", "Tah-tah", "Mah name es Muerte-death". All the characters are cast well and the plot is fun. Where recent films are over once you've seen the trailer this one can be enjoyed over and over. It looks like everyone had a good time with it. The only sad thing is that it is set in New Orleans as it was before Katrina.
Overlooked "Undercover Blues".......2007-04-30
1993's "Undercover Blues" pairs up Dennis Quaid and Kathleen Turner as recently retired spies and new parents, on maternity leave in New Orleans. Their characters seem unable, however, to avoid muggers, run-ins with skeptical police, and their former bosses, who want them to do one last mission. Despite their best efforts, they become enmeshed in an arms smuggling plot while juggling child care and the local police, who think they are criminals.
Lest this seem like a less than promising storyline, execution is everything. A persistant but hapless mugger, played to perfection by Stanley Tucci, tries to be a tough guy but repeatedly falls prey to the superior skills of Quaid and Turner and to his own clumsiness. Quaid and Turner thmeselves seem to a practiced routine down for every form of danger, from generating an instant but convincing cover story for each encounter with the police, to fending off muggers with martial arts and a baby carriage, to derailing the arms smuggling plot with comedic finese. Tom Arnold adds to the comedy in a nice supporting role.
This movie is highly recommended as an entertaining venture featuring lots of physical comedy and some believable chemistry between Quaid and Turner.
The kind of movie you can see over and over again and it's still funny!.......2007-03-30
This is one of the funniest movies ever! My family and I watch it over and over again and we still laugh...and we've been watching it for years! I highly recommend this movie...I can't say enough good things about it.
Great movie.......2007-03-08
Easy watching flick. Not Turners greatest work. She seems very wooden at times. The running gag with Stanley Tucci is great. "My name is death. Don't you forget that scum hawks!" Tom Arnold is funny as the midwest dork. Watch for a bit part by Dave Chapplle as Ozzie the thief. Very enjoyable.
Who can have the blues.......2007-02-03
This is fun romp through New Orleans with the Blues (Kathleen Turner and Denis Quaid) is one of the funniest movies with plenty of twists and turns. It's loaded with plenty of stars, Stanley Tucci, Fiona Shaw, Tom Arnold and more. It's a nice movie to sit and enjoy with popcorn and the family. It's a nice bit of mindless fluff that allows you to just sit and enjoy a film without a strain. It's a good film to watch to relieve the stress of a hard day.

Some pundits called it a flawed, exploitative action film that glamorized drug dealing and the luxury of a lucrative criminal lifestyle, spawning a trend of films that attracted youth gangs and provoked violence in theaters. Others hailed it as a breakthrough movie that depicted drug dealers as ruthless, corrupt, and evil, leading dead-end lives that no rational youth would want to emulate. However you interpret it, New Jack City is still one of the first and best films of the 1990s to crack open the underworld of cocaine and peer inside with its eyes wide open. It's also the film that established Wesley Snipes as an actor to watch, with enough charisma to bring an insidious quality of seduction to his role as coke-lord Nino Brown, and enough intelligence to portray a character deluded by his own sense of indestructible power. Director Mario Van Peebles stretched his otherwise-limited talent to bring vivid authenticity and urgency to this crime story, and subplots involving a pair of tenacious cops (Ice-T, Judd Nelson) and a recovering coke addict (Chris Rock) provide additional dramatic tension. Although some critics may hesitate to admit it, New Jack City deserves mention in any serious discussion about African American filmmakers and influential films. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
A true cinema classic.......2007-06-22
When I first saw this movie, I can honestly say that it delivered on all aspects of the crack cocaine epidemic of the 1980s. Mario Van Peebles did a wonderful job, and Wesley Snipes was outstanding. Ice T, phenomenal. Two other great actors in this film would have to be Christopher Williams, and Vanessa Williams. I personally recommend this film to all.
Excellent Inner City Crime Flick.......2005-12-21
This motion picture is about the crack cocaine epidemic and the devastating impact that it had on life in the inner city. This is a tough and uncompromising movie.
The main character in New Jack City is Nino Brown (Wesley Snipes), the leader of the Cash Money Brothers (CMB) gang that is one of the biggest crack cocaine trafficking outfits in New York City (NYC). Together with his partner Gee Money (Allen Payne), Brown lives a glamorous life of luxury, fast cars and hot chicks. To put it mildly, Brown is a poor role model for inner city youth.
As Brown's CMB empire grows, he becomes ever more arrogant. The CMB takes over an apartment building and evicts the inhabitants, including an elderly World War II veteran. The CMB is becoming big, fat and out of control. The CMB is hell bent on contaminating the NYC inner city scene. Brown even dreams of taking down the Mafia so that the CMB can become the dominant organized crime gang in NYC. Brown initiates action against the Mafia and scores some success. The shootouts between the CMB and the Mafia are very well done.
Eventually, the top brass at the New York Police Department (NYPD) wake up to the CMB menace and resolve to do something about it. Two of its best detectives, Scotty Appleton (Ice-T) and Nick Peretti (Judd Nelson) are assigned to the case. The detecting duo get a big break when they come in contact with a druggie named Pookie (Chris Rock). The detectives put Pookie on the road to recovery and Pookie agrees to infiltrate the CMB for the NYPD.
New Jack City is a most interesting movie. On the surface, it is just another cops and drug dealers movie, but it is really more than that. It is a tough, realistic portrayal of the damage wrought to the inner city by the crack cocaine epidemic. It presents an involving story with a strong anti-drug message. This movie really makes clear just how bad the drug problem is in the inner city and how illegal drugs have ravaged the community.
New Jack City is a well executed movie. It features strong performances by such actors as Ice-T and Wesley Snipes, who have generally not made strong performances on other movies. It has a strong script and an involving plot. It probably should have won the Academy Award for Best Picture, yet it was not even nominated for an Oscar in any category. This was because, for all its great points, New Jack City was generally regarded by both the critics and the Hollywood elite as a "black" movie and as such unworthy of being considered as legitimate cinema irregardless of how much money it earned for its releasing studio.
This movie was both entertaining and educational in that it taught this country's youth the dangers of drugs and how it
leads to a person's downfall. The message of this film was plain and simple: Crack cocaine can destroy a person's life and damage the lives of others. If we do not continue to fight the war on drugs, then drugs will continue to destroy our country.
We will own this f****n city!.......2005-12-20
No disrespect to those who say this movie is unrealistic but.....it was supposed to take place in a time when crack had first blown up. People were wearing big ass gold chains and all the dealers with this "new" product were blowing up. maybe not a rapidly as shown but, be for real, how much can you show in a 2 hour movie? A rip off of scarface? come on.....80% of the movies made had taken some aspect of another movie and tried to expand on it. New Jack did a pretty good job at that. Solid cast, good action, and brutality that really wasn't shown too much in movies back then. And don't even front.......Half of you who gunned down this movie probably went out and bought that same blue suit that Nino was rockin. And leave Ice T alone. True, he's not the best actor, but this was his breakthrough role and the man did okay. And as for the reviewer who made the statement about "cop killer now playing a cop", boy please.......I could only imagine what you would do on film if the money was right. But this all is just my opinion. See the flick and form your own. 4 stars.
Bad Ass...Nuff Said..........2005-10-20
Gotta love this one, enough Violence, Drugs, & "F" bombs to saticfy almost anyone! No, seriously, it really is a good movie. But i'm not gonna ramble on for 50 paragraphs like some [...] on why you should rent this. Just do it, and if not...it's your loss! now f*** off!

NEW JACK CITY.......2007-05-13
The DVD's were shipped promptly, was packaged very well, watched the movie the same night I received it. No complaints here.
seen it all before..........2007-04-30
Very little that's original here. I just don't see it as being some kind of classic.
There is a scene at the beginning where the main lead and his cohorts decide to put all the crack activity in one building: the making, the selling, etc. and one of the honcho's people says: "That's ingenius."
Huh? What's ingenius about it? If the cops assaulted the place you'd lose everything, the whole shebang, all at once. Why make it easier for the authorities? I doubt that drug lords are that dumb in real life. Certainly, some are--the proof is there, but someone as the character portrayed by Wesley Snipes? I doubt it.. I mean the film lost me right there, not to mention the fact that we have seen so many of the scenes in other films that came before it.
The flick just didn't grab me. Also, Judd Nelson, usually very good, seemed lost in the shuffle here--due to lack of focus by the director.
Not to mention: it's truly annoying when filmmakers go around praising their film and telling you how GREAT they think it is.
You know what? That's for the audiance to decide. A little modesty goes a long way. This director doesn't seem to know the meaning of the word.
If you've seen the 1932 Scarface, the 1983 Scarface, and remember the 90's well then you have a good grip on the film.......2007-02-08
I've only seen this movie quite recently after hearing about it for years and being told that it's a must see. While actually viewing the movie my opinions were mixed but afterwards everything slid into focus. On the technical side of the movie the directing and editing were nothing new or original, Mario Van Peebles played everything straight out of a textbook and the pacing didn't create any great flow. Most of the acting was far from award winning but not so bad as to distract from the movie itself, for any real length of time at least. Everything about the quality and look of the film screams early 90's, but in an endearing manner. As far as the films influences go, the 1983 version of "Scarface" is the most acknowledged and the one film that this movie will probably be compared to for the rest of its rememberance. However I began to notice something very quickly at the heart of the movie and with the blurb about drugs and drug dealers in America at the end, it became clear that the 1932 "Scarface: Shame of the Nation" had just as large of a part in the shaping of this movie, it serves basically as a PSA to America. This also may account for why everything technically seemed very plain and stereotypical (mind you with very high production value). Take these two movies, throw in a dash of "Cops", a very pop show at the time, add in a lot of the earliest mainstream MC's and you have New Jack City. A movie that still holds appeal after more than 15 years and an eclectic piece of 90's cinema that makes a decent viewing.
Mario Van Peebles found a great criminal in Wesley Snipes!.......2007-01-25
"Drugs ain't a black thing, or a white thing. It's a death thing. Death don't give a s*** about color."-Nick Perrti
I first saw this in 1993 and was totally blown away by the directing, cinematography, script and acting and so I was really looking forward to seeing it again after an absence of almost thirteen years. But after seeing this a second time, I could scarcely believe I was watching a film I had remembered very well. In 1994 I would have given this film 5 out of 5 but instead I've given it a 4 due to its frail ending.
New Jack City (1991) is an interesting movie that aims to please. This film marks the first time Mario Van Peebles directed a theatrical released film (that his father helped co-write) and he co-stars in the film as well. The movie follows a small time hood Nino Brown (Wesley Snipes) who builds up a vast criminal empire by flooding the streets with crack cocaine. Ice-T and Judd Nelson co-stars as well as two unorthodox cops who want to lock up Nino Brown. Allen Payne (Gee Money) and Mario van Peebles himself (Stone) has also giving some approved performances in here.
The acting is not the strongest part of this film but to me, three men made this film worthy of attention which is Wesley, Ice-T, and Rock. Chris Rock is unforgettable in this movie and he shines in his role as the "crack-head" Pookie. He has so many one-liners that are hysterical funny. The real winner is truly Wesley Snipes, who plays a role we don't usually identify with him, and does so with considerable spirit. He is utterly believable; the scene where he describes first killing someone while high on drugs scared the crap out of me - this is not someone I want as a friend! - Which happens to be a central theme of this film.
There are flaws in it to be sure, primarily of continuity - there are moments for which we are unprepared, and loose ends that don't get tied. The "Cash Money" drug cartel never gets its act together as a criminal organization - which may be the point, but in which case this needs greater exploration on the street level - without soldiers, you have no army, a lesson the Mafia could still teach the younger gangs. But taken all-in-all, "New Jack City" is a tough crime thriller, well-presented, with a great cast at their strongest. Despite it flaws, it holds a lot of strong and impressive moments which makes this worth a watch.
Black Scarface.......2006-11-17
One movie that I will probably remember from the 1990s the best is "New Jack City." It tells the story of how Nino Brown (played by Wesely Snipes) and his crew, CMB (Cash Money Brothers) rose to power as crack kingpins by running their operation out of a apartment complex that they take over. I was 2 when I first saw this movie, so I thought that New Jack City was a real place. When I got older I realized that it was New York City when I saw the Statue of Liberty in the opening sequence. People can argue that is movie is another Scarface for many reasons:
1. The dude starts to sell drugs after his homeboy puts him up on game
2. He blows up and becomes sucessful
3. Everything starts to go downhill
4. He kills his best friend
5. He himself gets killed
Those are some of the ways that New Jack City compares but this is how they contrast:
1. Nino is black while Tony is Cuban
2. It shows the devestation that crack did to people who used it and the communities while Scarface just shows the glitz and glamor of Miami
3. It shows the cops struggle to get crack off the streets. While Scarface barely shows Tony making any coke deals at all.
4. It deals with betrayal.
The music also makes the movie good too. It contains songs from co-stars Ice T and Chris Williams. A hip-hop classic in every since of the word

A low-budget, black GOODFELLAS. Unoriginal, but entertaining........2007-03-09
Director Craig Ross seems inspired by Martin Scorsese. As in GOODFELLAS and CASINO, Ross's BLUEHILL AVENUE charts the rise and fall of gansters. Ross also uses similar filmic techniques. He introduces many peripheral characters, panning over them as they work in their growing drug trade; a voice-over explains in detail each person's role in the crime operation. And it's a long film, epic length at 127 minutes.
BLUEHILL AVENUE is low budget, and it shows. The art direction and special effects aren't as "big" as in CASINO. Yet despite its smallness, BLUEHILL AVENUE isn't shabby. The acting is first rate. The writing is sharp. The cinematography is moody and textured. This is no direct-to-video cheapie with bad acting and flat lighting.
The film lost me in some places, mostly where it seemed torn between a gritty realism and hyper-stylized violence. For instance, much of the film opts for the gritty realism of a Scorsese film. But then there's a shootout, and BLUEHILL AVENUE forgets its realism, opting instead for a hyper-stylized battle where the outnumbered "good guys" are ambushed and outgunned, yet still manage to kill all the baddies, without suffering even a flesh wound.
That sort of fantasy shootout may work for Shaft or James Bond, but it undermines the realism that BLUEHILL AVENUE had set up.
This is a guy's film. Despite her prominent billing, Angelle Brooks's role is minor. Mostly she worries about her hubby, and nags him to quick the gang.
BLUEHILL AVENUE is not a great film, and certainly not original. At times its sharp dialog verges on the cliche. Yet it's a well made film, polished and entertaining.
Straight Gangsta.......2006-10-04
This movie was off the hook. It's like a gangsta story and a coming of age story combined. The first time I saw it I caught it in the middle, but it still caught my attention. It the story of 4 friends and their rise to power as crack kingpins in the Boston neighborhood of Roxbury. Along the way they face family crisis, crooked police and rivial gangs. The ending wasn't picture perfect, but it still was good. You just got see it for yourself to find out.
Not the Average "Gangsta" Film.......2006-06-02
When I first saw this, I must admit, I was skeptical. My first impression was oh boy, here we go again, another bad black film where all the characters are overdone and kill each other....but after someone talked me into giving it a chance, I was floored. This movie, honestly, is on the same level of Goodfellas and Boyz in tha Hood. The fact that you watch the characters come into that lifestyle from childhood, watch the connections that were made, and see the downfall was so real to me I wanted to cry when everything started going bad. I've seen that life, been part of it, and most movies in Hollywood don't get it right on film. This was one of the films that I would recommend to anyone who wants to see what it's like to become a true "dopeboy."
The most moving part of the film for me was when the main character sees his sister after she disappeared and what his parents said to him. This story happens everyday in the streets, and I loved watching it come to light.
A Hidden Gem, a must see!.......2006-04-20
Honestly, I had never heard of this movie until I came across it at the video store. Allen Payne (New Jack City and Jason's Lyric fame) definitely shines as the leading man in this gritty urban film about friendship, trust, loyalty and the price of betrayal. Clarence Williams III and William Forsythe add remarkably to the film and it's content.
ACTION PACKED.......2006-03-16
ALLEN PAYNE IS SUPERB. THE MOVIE IS GREAT FROM BEGINNING TO END WITH ENDLESS EXCITEMENT THAT KEEPS YOU ON YOUR FEET.

Kathleen Turner and Dennis Quaid are an unlikely couple in this unfortunate attempt at a comedy thriller. They play a pair of married spies who have taken parental leave and are vacationing in New Orleans with their year-old son. But they're called back into action to stop the sale of a shipment of stolen weapons. Ho-hum. Though both the leads have preternaturally cheery dispositions, it can't translate to the soggy script. The action is formulaic and the jokes nonexistent. The film's only bright spot: Stanley Tucci as a bumbling assassin whose wild streak of bad luck enlivens his numerous welcome appearances. --Marshall Fine

Product Description
Superstars Kathleen Turner and Dennis Quaid play quick-witted, super spies in this "...sassy and saucy romp that is guaranteed to leave you giddy and grateful" (Joe Leydon, The Houston Post).
Jeff and Jane Blue (Quaid and Turner) are parents of the 90s. They also happen to be espionage agents and the United States' only chance at national security. Just as they are ready to embark upon "phase 2" in their lives-the phase that will allow them a normal lifestyle in which to raise their baby-the cosmopolitan couple is persuaded out of their prolonged maternity leave to save the world from a corrupt Czech arms embezzler. Not an easy task for a couple who has to make it home for the late night feeding!
A hilarious supporting cast of characters-including a libidinous villainess and a hapless hood-add to the uproarious fun. Set among the sights and sounds of jazzy New Orleans, Undercover Blues is one action comedy you'll want to investigate!
