4 out of 5 stars Steve Reeves Hercules.......2007-02-12

the sequel to the Steve Reeves Hercules. A must for any Steve Reeves collector! Actually continues from the original Hercules movie. Locations are great and the story is OK too.

4 out of 5 stars Quite a surprise.......2007-01-21

Hercules Unchained. My, my, my. I watched these movies as a boy. When I grew up, I just assumed they were children's movies and not very good at all. But surprisingly, this movie is enchanting. There are images that will not leave you easily. If you are not a romantic, if you are easily put off, forget it. If you buy the Westlake Entertainment version, in the extras there is a photo gallery. The background music consists of themes from the movie by the great Enzo Masetti, not easily found. Simply amazing music, very cinamatic and dreamy.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining Hercules Sequel.......2006-12-23

After reading several of the reviews of this movie, I would like to add my two cents.First of all this is a good sword and sandal film from the late 1950's.If you want superior acting then I suggest Hamlet with Lawrence Olivier. This is a lightweight, fun film that picks up where the original HERCULES leaves off.Although most of his movies follow the same plot formula, this Steve Reeves film is still very entertaining.Alot of the characters in the first film are in this movie as well. The movie also has an above average musical score. In my opinion his three best films are HERCULES, HERCULES UNCHAINED, and THE THIEF OF BAGHDAD.I also have several videos of him appearing in a number of television shows with his real speaking voice. Although his voice was not baritone, it is hardly "tinny".He turned down the role that eventually went to Clint Eastwood in Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns.Reeves did not like the direction in which 1960's films were headed, so he decided to retire from acting.

1 out of 5 stars Bad quality digital transfer .......2006-12-01

This DVD is produced by Westlake Entertainment Group. It runs for 107 minutes and is presented in the fullscreen format. There is an interactive menu that includes scene selection, photo gallery and very short biographies and filmographies.

The real problem is that the digital transfer used Westlake Entertainment Group is very poor quality. The resultant film imagery is like a very old VHS tape.

I would not recommend you buy from this distributor. This is symptomatic of a wider problem in which classic films that were made before the advent of the digital age are being treated disgracefully by producing bad low budget DVDs transfers. Show some respect to the director, actors and movie viewer and do it properly or dont do it at all and leave the market open for some other distributor to do it the way it should be done.

2 out of 5 stars The Golden Age of the Herc.......2006-09-07

If you like poorly made movies from the 50s and 60s then the Hercules movies are good ones. This is the second movie that featured Steve Reeves as the title character and he was clearly the best of the lot. The way he looked and moved and spoke, you could really believe he was Hercules.

In this movie Herc and his wife and young Ulysses are headed to his home city of Thebes when they get sidetracked. Herc drinks from an enchanted pool of water and forgets who he is. He ends up with Queen Omphale, convinced he is married to her. Ulysses pretends to be Herc's deaf mute servant and tries to restore the Big Man's memory. There are other political elements to the plot but not much of it makes sense. Herc flexes his muscles, Omphale flexes her cleavage and there is a big free-for-all fight scene at the end. Hercules ends up back with his wife Iole and everyone lives happily ever after. The acting is cheesy, the direction erratic and the script bizarre.

1 out of 5 stars Great 3 Episodes but you Save Money by Buying the First Season.......2006-06-19

I love these three epsidoes which introduced Xena and they are essentail if you are a Hercules or Xena fan. If you want to buy them though I would suggest buying the complete first season of Hercules. You get five full tv movies, these three episodes, and ten more episodes for fifteen dollars. You save eight dollars and you get so much more.

3 out of 5 stars good episodes, overpriced.......2006-05-13

These 3 episodes of Hercules the Legendary journeys are available here for one price, but are also available as part of Hercules Season One for a lower price, (plus you get the rest of the season) and you can see the episodes in context. Also Herc season 1 contains 5 tv movies, 3 of which are really quite good. (the 1st is a bit weak and the 5th is a re-hash of the other four) Movie 1 has Lucy Lawless in a non-xena bit part, and Movie 2 has Renee O'Connor in a featured role. So if you get that set you'll get everything you get here, plus a lot more stuff, and it is A LOT CHEAPER.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!!.......2005-03-01

this is a great dvd, I advise this item for any die-hard xena fan! But only one problem, there are no special feature's! No commentary no nothing and that's a waist! Well I hope this review was helpful to anyone!

1 out of 5 stars this sux.......2004-07-06

this item is soo bad dont buy it its very boring n not helpful i recomend u buy seasons.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but different than you may expect........2004-01-06

Before you watch this DVD, keep in mind that they are episodes of Hercules, and are quite different. It isn't the best...at this point, the character of Xena had a lot of bugs to work out. Her outfit is black instead of brown, her hair is lighter, and although she has her shakram, her battle cry needed a LOT of work. Lucy Lawless' acting skills aren't quite as good as you can imagine, when compared to later episodes of Xena. The episodes are entertaining enough, and it's good to know how Xena came about, but I'm still wondering why they call her warrior princess. The DVD lacks bonus features, and there is no chaptering and it starts out with the first episode instead of the Menu. You have to go through the menu to switch episodes and the menu iself is pretty boring, with no intros or animations. Despite these facts, I still think they are worth watching and adding to and Xena fan collection.

1 out of 5 stars Steve Reeves deserved better DVD tribute.......2004-07-23

I got Steve Reeves' Double Feature of HERCULES/HERCULES UNCHAINED DVD last week.
I saw these 2 movies when I was young and it was good to see Steve Reeves again.
HOWEVER!!!!! It is regretful and a disappointment that the DVD was not made in Widescreen Format with improved colour quality and soundtrack. Seemed like half the movie is missing in certain scenes.
Surely! Steve Reeves deserved better.
It looked like the company put the 2 movies on DVD in the quickest and cheapest way without any consideration for the actor.
It made the movies look......Cheapily Done like a B or C rated movie.
Here are items that need improvement.
COLOUR - the movie needs to be digitally enhanced to bring out a more sharper, krispier colour. When I watched the movies you can see tiny, white specks and lines dancing around which showed the DVD was made from films that were worn and fading. Also some scenes were blurred. Not very clear.
AUDIO - The soundtrack could be remastered to make it smoother.

I have other movies like JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH starring James Mason, Pat Boone; JASON and THE ARGONAUTS, MYSTERIOUS ISLAND are just a few that were made back in the sixties. All these and others that I have, have been digitally enhanced in widescreen format with sharper, clearer picture colour and improved soundtrack.
Why can't this company turn around and try some serious restoration to these HERCULES films and have a little more respect to STEVE REEVES - Mr. Hercules himself!!!!??????
I think he would appreciate it more.
Wouldn't we all?

1 out of 5 stars DVD Sucks.......2004-07-04

Movie not in anamorphic wide screen format. Half the picture is lost. "DO NOT BUY" . Scale of 1-5 rating is zero. Wait for the widescreen version.

1 out of 5 stars Not widescreen.......2004-07-03

These brawn-and-sandal classics are, unfortunately, presented here in so-called "full" frame, 1.33:1. Since they were shot in a Cinemascope-like format, 2.35:1, more than half the original image is lost. This is not an acceptable way to view an epic. Purchase not recommended.

Eventually someone will release a widescreen version; all the more reason to send the message to labels like this one: No widescreen, no sale!

5 out of 5 stars Don't hesitate! Buy now!.......2002-02-06

This is literally Xena's birth, both as a character and as a new person. It is how we see her for the very first time, and this time she is evil. In her own tv-series we have seen little from har evil past, but it felt so close you could smell it. Here we see what she was like. And it is everything you ever dreamed of. Lucy Lawless does an excellent job in luring Iolaus to fall in love with her and betray Hercules. She almost get's him to kill Hercules, but he regains his sanity just in time to see what's going on.
In the gauntlet we see her first step towards the new life. She saves a child from being slaughtered, and as a concequense she is betrayed by her own army. She has to walk the gauntlet, and nearly dies. But on the other side we see a redeamed and newborned woman. She isn't good yet, but in many ways their betrayal has caused her to become another person. Xena meets Hercules which she again tries to kill, but he disarms her and leaves her lying on the ground. He asks her to join them in the fight for good, but she refuses. Later she reconsiders and saves Hercules and Iolaus from getting slayed. She joins them. Of course Hercules falls in love with her, but they decide to go seperate ways. She in order to find herself, and to find a new purpose in life. But this time it is not a purpose like the one in destiny, namely death. She decides to try and do good, one deed at a time, to try and redeam her past actions. That's the woman we first meet in the series.
After having seen these series I understood Xena even better. So if you're a hardcore nutball like myself, you have to see this. If not, see it anyway. The acting is great, especially from Lucy Lawless and Michael Hurst. It is great action with a touch of sci-fi. For short a must see for everyone who likes action and drama!

5 out of 5 stars Before Redemption.......2001-07-04

If anyone has followed the Xena series at all, these 3 videos are a must. Seeing Xena before her trip to redemption with Gabrielle, watching the change as she goes from ultimate evil to the Warrior Princess we came to love, the darkness blending into light. Don't pass these up, these are the true legacy, the beginning of Xena.

5 out of 5 stars Great to see the origin.......2001-02-02

I saw this on TV and loved it. I thought that all three are very good. Seeing this was exciting for me because I watched her series first. Even if you already know about good Xena it is still very interesting. Some people say the 3rd part is corny, I don't agree. You see that Xena is not completely inhuman. In the original script she died in the end so thats where the "Confess my true feelings unless I die fighting Darfus" came from.

P.S. There is a lot of interesting insight in the offical book that goes with this triology.

P.P.S. Herc deserves to fall in love again so I don't think it is corny.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2000-09-19

The bad guys are always more appealing than the good guys. This is why the evil Xena, Conqueror of Nations, is more entertaining to watch than the reformed (or, I should say, reforming) Xena, Warrior Princess. This shows the beginning of her rejection of her evil ways with Hercules' help. Of course, in "The Warrior Princess" there is none of this. But events in "The Gauntlet" lead her to rethink her life and ways, leading to redemption in "The Unchained Heart". It's fun to see her as evil in "The Warrior Princess", but, still the consummate warrior, begin to see the error of her ways in "The Gauntlet." "The Unchained Heart" is a bit of a disappointment in that it is the episode where Xena repents. At the end she hits the road on a mission to redeem herself for her past deeds. The episode was still enjoyable, for all that it was a lead-in to her own series. Entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars How a Gauntlet Unchained a Warrior Princess' Heart.......2000-07-25

In this delicious trilogy of unterror, we see the beginning of the end of Xena,Conquerer of Nations. Thus, the Warrior Princess is born.In an all-too-predictable plot of evil turning good,we are introduced to Xena and her evil ways, how Hercules helped her see the error of her ways, and why she now chooses to fight on the side of the angels(instead of with the angels if she continued her misdeeds.)'Tis a must for all Xena fans,as you see her origin somewhat, and if you currently watch the series, it's a fine example of a character having evolved.

5 out of 5 stars It's XENA, battle On a little on soft side.......2000-09-05

This is the last in a triology. Xena is new to the works of being a good-warrior. Still, Hercules is more than willing to help a lady along. In fact, the two begin a strong romance. MM, mm. But, Iolaus has not forgotten the evil manner in which Xena tossed his heart on the ground. When he sees her hooking up with Hercules, it yanks a major chord of distrust. Can the three bind together to stop Darphus and gang who have captured The dog of Hades who needs human flesh to survive? Battle on!

5 out of 5 stars I thought it was a very touching, moving ending. I love it........1999-01-01

Being an avid die-hard Xena/Hercules fan I have to say the trilogy was just awesome. I loved the ending. It's too bad they didn't capitalize on the Xena/Hercules relationship.

3 out of 5 stars I thought it was really boring and confusing........1998-12-26

I think that the movie was confusing and I did not like it. Hercules should not have fallen in love with Xeana after she tried to kill him and his friend . But he was not thinking staight like he should have.

5 out of 5 stars Great twinpack of Reeves - The original Hercules.......2002-08-05

Glad to see that the Reeves movies are coming out on dvd. Hercules/Hercules Unchained were the only Herc films starring Reeves and produced by the late, great Joseph E. Levine and costarring the beautiul Sylvia Koscina. These films have a nice musical scoreand good cinematogrophy. Reeves looks like a Greek God with both physique and handsome good looks. These are movies that are fun to watch but won't test your mental muscles. In any event, I rated them both a five and feel that they are worth your time to watch and add to your dvd collection.

5 out of 5 stars The man who inspired Arnold and Sly.......2002-07-26

Don't look for any great story plots, any great acting in Hercules and Hercules Unchained. But then do any of thes movies have a great story? Hercules is my favorite of the two. Hercules Unchained has better quality cinematogrophy and even has Reeves in a love scene (as love scenes were allowed back in those days). Reeves appears stiff, but how man people know that in real life, Reeves was shy and timid? When he became a film star, he was nicknamed "Hollywoods quiet man." Reeves was one of two men to inspire Arnold (Ahhnold) (the other being Reg Park a 3 time Mr. Universe who made a few silly herc films in the 60's) to take up weight training and become an actor. Sylvestor Stallone also credits Reeves as an early inspiration and still has Reeves pictures in his gym.Hercules and Hercules Unchained are good, clean movies. Fun and well produced for the times. Remember these movies were made over 40 years ago. I recomend White Warrior not only for Reeves fans, but also because it is a good movie. Hopefully amazon will get Morgan the Pirate and Pirates of the 7 Seas starring Reeves and his picture, Long Road to Hell which is a Clint Eastwood type western.

4 out of 5 stars Reeves Is Not "Musclebound".......2001-12-22

I challenge Leonard Maltin's use of the term "musclebound" to describe Steve Reeves. That word means "stiff" or "rigid" due to some muscle-related problem. Reeves is most definitely NOT "musclebound". Maltin knows nothing about muscles. Reeves is built (!), aesthetic, athletic. This movie is meant to be fun, like a "comic" book, & Reeves is a terrific hero, with terrific muscles. He inspired many guys to get buff, way before "Ahnold" came along. Cool? Yes!

    5 out of 5 stars Good movie!.......2001-03-05

I just saw this movie for the first time. It has a good musical score, decent script and acting. Reeves is great in this role. He looks like a Greek God.For you guys attacking the acting skills and story plot, do you really think Arnold is a good actor and has mind dazzling plots? Let's get real already! This is actually two movies in one: first, the Labors of Hercules and his role as master of arms for the King of Jolco then the adventure of Jason and the Argonauts and the Quest for the Golden Fleece.Reeves outmuscles Kevin Sorbo by leaps and bounds and has a charisma better than Arnold. I became a fan of Reeves recently by reading his book; "Building the Classic Physique." As Hercules, Reeves displays the classic physique. Easy to see why he was a former Mr. America and Mr. Universe. And his book is great. I believe that this is the best natural bodybuilding, conditioning and toning book out there. Great for men and women. My Dad has been a big fan of Reeves for along time. Looking forward to seeing more of his movies. If you haven't watched Hercules with Steve Reeves, do, you'll love it just like I did.Good movie. Reeves is appealing to men and women alike, bodybuilders and the general public. It's easy to see why he was so popular in his day. I heard that President John F. Kennedy and Winston Churchill enjoyed his movies as well.I know I did. Watch it. You'll love it. And if you can get a copy, I recommend his great book "Build The Classic Physique"RIP MR. REEVES and thank you for leaving us your movies and your wisdom to inspire.

If you really like a nice copy, buy this one. It has English and Italian soundtrack with French subtitles you cannot - unfortunately - switch off - only the French one is without, but it's in the original aspect ratio and pretty high quality print. If you love the peplum, this is perfect candy!
