Johnny Mack Brown plays an unusually dapper fur trapper hired to investigate a series of attacks preventing wagon trains from reaching the Oregon territories. He joins up with the most beleaguered wagon train in history, which spends several sequential episodes trying to get out of the same dusty town. Whenever the train starts moving, it falls under attack by Indians or stampeding cattle or some other stock footage, which digital technology makes even easier to spot.

Don't try to watch more than one or two chapters at a time, because this serial bears the marks of the form. Serials were a unique format completely beholden to the circumstances under which they were viewed. There was no guarantee that viewers attended the theater the previous week, so every installment contains a certain amount of redundant footage. Each chapter has opening credits, scrolling text describing the story thus far and usually about a minute of footage from the previous chapter, including the cliffhanger. There are no obvious cheats, though there is often an added shot or two (such as Johnny jumping clear of a crashing wagon) that shows how the cliffhanger was resolved. I have to knock off one star because of the disappointing ending and the fact that 15 chapters is simply to much for the story.

Johnny Mack Brown has a very physical method of fisticuffs that is a nice contrast to his easy-going acting style. He's not the most charismatic cinema cowboy, but he's charming enough to anchor the creaky cast. The strongest supporting character is Fuzzy Knight, who made dozens of films and serials with Brown. His performance, while amusing, never degenerates to the point of simple comic relief. You'll probably get a laugh out of how coyly the romantic elements are handled, chaste even by 1939 standards. This serial is very similar to Flaming Frontiers, which is also available on DVD and is just as much fun.

Bobby J. Copeland's book on "Johnny Mack Brown: Up Close & Personal" is chuck full of answers to all the questions his fans had from early on...when you went to see him on the big screen, you got exactly what the marquee said...plenty of thrills, adventure and loaded with action...Johnny Mack was a natural for the western, his riding abilities and fight scenes were of the the same caliber as Buck Jones and Bob Steele...Johnny Mack sets the saddle better than Duke Wayne...seems Johnny got better with the more films he made and the scripts were always top notch...he was one of the best-liked people in films, what you saw on the screen is what he really was...a great human being.

Adam Pontipee (Howard Keel), the eldest of seven brothers living in 1800's Oregon, goes to town looking for a wife. Hopelessly full of conviction and determination, he manages to convince Milly (Jane Powell) to marry him right away and go live with him in his backwoods home. Milly, whos been blinded by this sudden hope to lead a happy life, unfortunately doesnt know that Adam lives with his six brothers, all uneducated backwoodsmen. After she arrives to their home, Milly realizes Adam wanted a maid more than a wife, and decides to make it hard for him and his brothers. Thus she begins to educate them and teach them some modals. The goal: to get each of them a wife, whom they will respect as each one deserves. And of course, to make Adam appreciate her for what she is, and not for what she can do. Colorful, intense, spectacular, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers might very well be the best movie musical ever made. It not only features an appealing story full of morals, but also a colorful set of characters with depth. All this covered by gorgeous songs and outstanding dance sequences. The barn-raising scene is eye-popping (undoubtedly the most spectacularly staged dancing sequence my eyes have witnessed) and songs like "When You're in Love", "Lonesome Polecat","June Bride","Spring, Spring, Spring" and all others play with the viewer's feelings. Recognition goes to Johnny Mercer and Gene DePaul for their score, Adolph Deutsch and Saul Chaplin for their musical direction and to Michael Kidd for his dance numbers. SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS is a classic musical filled with rich moments; how could anything be more beautiful?

Goin' Co'tin'.......2005-05-25

I saw this film in the movies when it first came out. I watched it recently and found that it is just as fun to watch as the first time. I had forgotten some of the scenes and was pleasantly surprised. You will find your self not humming but actually singing the tunes along with the movie and in the shower. Well even if you don't normally sing in the shower this movie will help you start. And do not go swinging your ax in the house.

The DVD version has background information to enhance your viewing pleasure.

If nothing else this film is a good addition to your library.

Just incase you really haven't seen this film (hard to imagine), Millie (Jane Powell) one of the towns people is courted by Adam (Howard Keel) who is from another world, that of the woods. Both people have different agendas. Millie plans on a place of her own out of the hectic city and maybe a little more exotic with a different sort of man. Adam on the other hand needs a chief cook and bottle washer for himself and his six brothers. At first the surprise is on Millie. Later Adam finds out that he can not handle what he has brought home. The fun begins as Millie and Adam has a different approach to finding wives for the six brothers.

This film has lots of color-coordinated clothes, great dance scenes and appropriate song at just the right places to integrate into a fun story.
