Amazon.com essential video

Not an ideal choice for younger kids, this hip and violent animated feature from Disney was nevertheless a huge smash in theaters and on video, and it continues to enjoy life in an acclaimed Broadway production. The story finds a lion cub, son of a king, sent into exile after his father is sabotaged by a rivalrous uncle. The little hero finds his way into the "circle of life" with some new friends and eventually comes back to reclaim his proper place. Characters are very strong, vocal performances by the likes of Jeremy Irons, Nathan Lane, and Whoopi Goldberg are terrific, the jokes are aimed as much (if not more) at adults than kids, the animation is sometimes breathtaking, and the music is more palatable than in many Disney features. But be cautious: this is too intense for the Rugrat crowd. --Tom Keogh

How good-looking is the DVD restoration of Disney's popular animated film? Take a look at the serviceable but dull film clips incorporated in the plethora of extras and compare them to the vivid gorgeousness of the film presentation. This "special edition" also adds a 90-second song ("Morning Report") that originated in the lavish stage musical. To Disney's credit, the original theatrical version is also included, both restored and featuring two 5.1 soundtracks: Dolby Digital and a new Disney Enhanced Home Theater Mix, which does sound brighter. As with the Disney Platinum line, everything is thrown into the discs, except an outsider's voice (the rah-rahs of Disney grow tiresome at times). The excellent commentary from the directors and producer, originally on the laser disc, is hidden under the audio set-up menu.

The second disc is organized by 20-minute-ish "journeys" tackling the elements of story, music, et cetera, including good background on the awkward Shakespearean origins at Disney where it was referred as "Bamlet." The most interesting journey follows the landmark stage production, and the kids should be transfixed by shots of the real African wildlife in the animal journey. Three deleted segments are real curios, including an opening lyric for "Hakuna Matata." Most set-top DVD games are usually pretty thin (DVD-ROM is where it's at), but the Safari game is an exception--the kids should love the roaring animals (in 5.1 Surround, no less). One serious demerit goes to the needless and complicated second navigation system that is listed by continent, but just shows the same features reordered. --Doug Thomas

propably one of the best animated motion pictures ever. I hated the addition of the new song, but I believe that was directed towards the younger audiences. Many extras, most i liked to watch

5 out of 5 stars A great Disney movie, for kids AND adults!.......2007-05-12

This is a great story and it's told with very good music intertwined with the dialogue. "The Lion King" and other Disney animated films are good entertainment keeping me occupied on my daily treadmill walks. I find that I enjoy them as much as I did when I was a child.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Family movie!!.......2007-05-09

I have a 6 and a 2 year old. They love this movie. I've been looking all over trying to locate it for our movie library. The quality of this movie is awesome. The sound effects are great. I notice they've added a few more songs to the movie since it was first viewed in 1994. I was pleased to see that my two year old was not afraid of the hyenas. He thinks that scar is mean. Moreover, he insist on watching it every weekend.

The problem with this movie is the same problem I see in 90% of movies released by Disney. Although I seem to be the only person to notice this, most Disney movies are a beginning and an end with little to no substance in the middle. In this film for instance, Simba is your normal curious, happy and mischevious child just of course, he's a lion who is next in line to become the next king. His father is thrown off the side of a mountain killing him which causes Simba's problem. Led to believe he is the cause he runs into exile. Good way to start an animated Children's movie I think. About 7-10 minutes later he's grown and on his way to reclaim his place. Where the depth of the story should be is put into a short montage instead of showing his feelings and growing up and when he accepts his reponsability you never fully get a feeling of how hard it is for him. And how easily convinced he is to come back is lame in it self. Timone and Pumba are good characters to have an mixed with The Hiena's(however you spell that) make for really funny characters. But the story as most Disney movies sucks and is really just recycled from every other Disney movie. With exception of the Pirates Of The Carribean movies the company really has done nothing I see should give it half the hype it gets. And on a quick side note. Am I the only one who feels like Disney only spits out these movies to create the endless stream of merchindise that makes the weakest of characers a god in the Disney world. I mean, you can buy an action figure of the midget in the Pirate movies and making Snot Rod who appears in Cars for like 1.5 minutes in like 5 diffent toy car forms that I've seen. Disney Movies in General are nothing more than 85 minute long comercials for a slew of cloths, toys and other worthless collectables. The whole reason the Pirates of The Carribean was ever conceived was to advertise a a ride within Disney World. You can say movies like Dogma, Scarface and The Exorcist are evil. But none try to draw your worship and aww harder than Disney. In other words Disney is the real Devil and Watching Disney movies will damn you to HELL!!!-haha. (for real. watch if you want. but if people gonna dog my taste for being more racey I'm gonna spend that judgemental pendelum around and let you think about what could truly be a sin against God. Remember the 1st Commandment and see if Disney isn't trying to go against it with the way it attempts to pound these characters into your and your kid's head so much that it;s as if these movies, merchindise and mouse ears are the worlds greatest gifts to mankind as if Mickey Mouse is Jesus Christ himself reincarnated as a dirty f**kin' rat)

In this 12th-century version of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Henry II of England (Peter O'Toole) and his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine (Katharine Hepburn), meet on Christmas Eve to discuss the future of the throne. These two are having slight marital problems, as she is kept in captivity most of the year for raising a rebellion against him, and he flaunts his young mistress. Then there are the problems raised by their three treacherous and traitorous sons.

James Goldman won an Oscar® for the brilliant screenplay, based on his Broadway play. It is a tad wordy, as the action is kept to a minimum, but those words are sharp as daggers. The humor is wicked and black and delivered with very dry, dead-on precision. Sparks fly and the screen sizzles whenever Hepburn and O'Toole tango, which is often. Both were nominated for Academy Awards® for their vigorous performances. (She won; he didn't.) There's also an infamous homo-erotic exchange between Philip of France (Timothy Dalton) and Richard the Lionhearted (Anthony Hopkins). Both actors were making their feature-film debuts. --Rochelle O'Gorman

4 out of 5 stars Medieval dysfunction.......2007-06-28

It is Christmas, 1183 and aging King Henry II of England meets with his estranged wife Eleanor of Aquitaine to decide which of their three sons will inherit the kingdom upon Henry's death. Each has a favorite and one must be chosen, and through deception, torment, connivance and deceit the "family" follows through in their respective roles. It is a wonderful story and though the outcome is in doubt, one thing is certain....there will never be another Christmas like this one!

Strong performances are universally good in "The Lion in Winter" and Katharine Hepburn earned a much deserved Academy Award. It's a shame that Peter O'Toole didn't win as well, as the two are equally matched for spark-flying drama. A third dazzling performance is turned in by a young Timothy Dalton as King Philip of France.

Though as much as the drama is perfected, "The Lion in Winter" (1968) hasn't particularly worn the test of time well. The dialogue is kitschy, (sometimes unintentionally funny) and the dysfunction is all too broad. Emotions change faster than you can snap your fingers, so many of the scenes don't play out as well as they should. That said however, "The Lion in Winter" is worth seeing for Hepburn, O'Toole and Dalton. On that score, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Lion in Winter.......2007-06-28

Shot on location in France and the British Isles, and based on an excoriating play by Richard Goldman, "Lion" is a wit-fueled, magnificently acted parable of power-lust and extreme family dysfunction. O'Toole and Oscar winner Hepburn are superb as the grizzled, sarcastic regent and his cunning wife, locked in a never-ending exchange of venomous criticisms. A youthful Anthony Hopkins, in a spirited turn, pops off some of the best insults. Aside from the endless machinations of various family members, Harvey adds period flavor with authentic costumes and gloomy, tone-perfect settings. When this "Lion" roars, you'll be hooked.

5 out of 5 stars The "Lion" roars.......2007-06-14

"The Lion in Winter" is one of the best films ever made. It has the language, scope and beauty of a great Shakespearean play. It also has two magnificent performances by O'Toole (King Henry II) and Hepburn (Queen Eleanor)and a fine early film appearance by Anthony Hopkins (Richard the Lionhearted). It concerns the struggle of Henry's three sons to take the crown and King Philip of France (Timothy Dalton) is willing to use Richard's love for him to destroy the kingdom.

4 out of 5 stars Start to finish great performances........2007-06-06

Great storyline. Untoppable Performances. I keep buying copies, because my friends keep making off with them. This one dosn't dissapoint.

5 out of 5 stars Well, What Family Doesn't Have Its Ups and Downs?.......2007-06-02

"Katharine Hepburn, from her first scene when she is briefly taken out of her 10-year imprisonment, shows a wonderful relish for even the most unimpressive sarcastic line. "Well, what family doesn't have its ups and downs," she says, when sodomy, patricide, treason and incest are running their daily course. There is something about an actress with this degree of presence and a wholly distinct, pleasant and idiosyncratic voice that gets her through even misplaced weepy or extravagant scenes." Renata Adler

How many times can you watch a masterpiece and not get tired of it? Apparently as many as you want. Thus 'The Lion In Winter' is the masterpiece for me. The action is contained within one day,Christmas Eve. Henry II, Peter O'Toole is 50 years old and wants to choose his heir before he dies. He has three sons: John, his favorite; Richard, the soldier genius; and Geoffrey, reserved and quiet. Henry calls a Christmas court, letting his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine Katharine Hepburn out of prison for the occasion. King Philip of France is also a visitor. He wants to know when his sister will be married to the heir to the throne. But, Henry has not been able to appoint an heir yet, and what's more, the girl's become his mistress. This film marks the debut of Anthony Hopkins, as Richard the Lion-Hearted, Nigel Terry as the adolescent Prince John; John Castle, as Prince Geoffrey; and Timothy Dalton, as Philip of France. This film brought forth many Oscars and they deserve to be mentioned.

Katherine Hepburn-Eleanor of Aquitaine brought Hepburn her third of four Oscars.

Peter O'Toole- Nominated but did not win-Best Actor

James Goldman- Best Screenplay

Anthony Harvey- Best Director

Margarret Furst- Best Costume Design

Because of the powerful acting we know at the outset that the outcome will be a result of power, politics and will. The stakes grow high as the film moves along until there is no game any longer only reality. The emotional tug of war is palpable between the Queen and King. The issues of trust, love and honor are at stake. This film takes on the human emotions and the full realm of laughter, smiles, tears and anger invade our souls. We root for the Queen until her manipulation has so evidently destroyed her family. We feel sorrow for the three sons, until their foibles become self-evident. The King is the King and thus all powerful. And,the mistress is but the pawn in this game.

"Jesus himself would have a hard time bringing peace to this yuletide household. Here's a family whose every deed and word is a chess move or a dagger stroke. After all, there's more at stake than merely the future of England and France. Alliances (political and sexual) rise and fall amid skillful maneuvering, clashing, and scheming for Henry's throne. At the center of this regal melee are Henry and Eleanor, whose combination of high mutual fondness and take-no-prisoners warfare -- on battlefields and in bedrooms -- make them one of cinema's great complicated relationships."
Mark Bourne

If there are any neophytes out there who have not seen this film- take thee to the nearest DVD store. A film not to be missed.
Highly, Highly Recommended. prisrob 6-02-07

C.S. Lewis's classic novel The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe makes an ambitious and long-awaited leap to the screen in this modern adaptation. It's a CGI-created world laden with all the special effects and visual wizardry modern filmmaking technology can conjure, which is fine so long as the film stays true to the story that Lewis wrote. And while this film is not a literal translation--it really wants to be so much more than just a kids' movie--for the most part it is faithful enough to the story, and whatever faults it has are happily faults of overreaching, and not of holding back. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe tells the story of the four Pevensie children, Lucy, Peter, Edmund, and Susan, and their adventures in the mystical world of Narnia. Sent to the British countryside for their own safety during the blitz of World War II, they discover an entryway into a mystical world through an old wardrobe. Narnia is inhabited by mythical, anthropomorphic creatures suffering under the hundred-year rule of the cruel White Witch (Tilda Swinton, in a standout role). The arrival of the children gives the creatures of Narnia hope for liberation, and all are dragged into the inevitable conflict between evil (the Witch) and good (Aslan the Lion, the Messiah figure, regally voiced by Liam Neeson).

Director (and co-screenwriter) Andrew Adamson, a veteran of the Shrek franchise, knows his way around a fantasy-based adventure story, and he wisely keeps the story moving when it could easily become bogged down and tiresome. Narnia is, of course, a Christian allegory and the symbology is definitely there (as it should be, otherwise it wouldn't be the story Lewis wrote), but audiences aren't knocked over the head with it, and in the hands of another director it could easily have become pedantic. The focus is squarely on the children and their adventures. The four young actors are respectable in their roles, especially considering the size of the project put on their shoulders, but it's the young Georgie Henley as the curious Lucy who stands out. This isn't a film that wildly succeeds, and in the long run it won't have the same impact as the Harry Potter franchise, but it is well done, and kids will get swept up in the adventure. Note: Narnia does contain battle scenes that some parents may consider too violent for younger children. --Dan Vancini

Description

Prepare to enter another world when Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media present C.S. Lewis' timeless and beloved adventure. With the stunningly realistic special effects, you'll experience the exploits of Lucy, Edmund, Susan, and Peter, four siblings who find the world of Narnia through a magical wardrobe while playing a game of "hide-and-seek" at the country estate of a mysterious professor. Once there, the children discover a charming, once peaceful land inhabited by talking beasts, dwarfs, fauns, centaurs, and giants that has been turned into a world of eternal winter by the evil White Witch, Jadis. Aided by the wise and magnificent lion Aslan, the children lead Narnia into a spectacular climactic battle to be free of the Witch's glacial powers forever! The Chronicles of Narnia, Narnia, and all other book titles, characters and locales original thereto are trademarks of C.S. Lewis Pte Ltd. and are used with permission. © Disney/Walden

1 out of 5 stars typical disney's junk for kids and adults with peter-pan syndrome.......2007-06-30

another bore-to-death disney fantasy for kids only with endless annoying music score that could be applied to every other disney movie.
i was so glad that my kids are all grown-ups now, so i don't have to sit thru in the torture chamber to finish this terribly pretentious movie.

5 out of 5 stars Ebdearing epic novel for children!.......2007-06-30

Disney would have made C. S. lewis proud with this production of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. I watched this play every year at Christmas time and have loved it from the start.

The panoramic snow scenes and stage decorum are nothing short of spectacular. The religious allegory that goes with the storyline is enhanced in the battle and the ending is left just right for sequels.

I have said this in many reviews. Disney you deserved the oscar for this picture.

5 out of 5 stars The Chronicles of Narnia.......2007-06-29

Fantasy, adventure, intrigue and triumph. What more could be said of this classic. Great special effects and good acting talents bring this story to life like no other version.

5 out of 5 stars A Visual Feast That Captures The Imagination!.......2007-06-14

The Chronicles of Narnia was brought to life on screen better than I have ever seen it! The visual effects were astonding! A great family adventure! If you liked the book, then you will like this! If you have not read the book, you should still enjoy the movie!

5 out of 5 stars Six Stars!.......2007-06-13

Kittykins gave a lot of good detail, which is what I usually refer to as a spoiler but not in this case. Parents need to know what this show portends. If you are a Jew or other religion you may reject the religious allegory but you cannot fault the storyline or special effects and panoramic views of a land of ice and snow...slowly thawing as love arrives to break a spell long overdue to be broken. Leaves from trees form figures and send messages and codes to the sons of Adam and daughters of Eve.

It was time for a Disney Oscar! But it didn't get what it deserved.

"The Walt Disney production of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was Disney at its best. The religious allegations of the movie gave it a more worthy standing in the the movie world as a tool for children that teaches moral values without being preachy. It leaves nothing out of the main concept that compelled C. S. Lewis, an atheist converted to "Christianity" to write it. He has turned the Bible message into one acceptable to the child and if you will forgive me, but this is not meant to be a pun, but C. S. Lewis nailed it! Jim Broadbent saw its integrity and delivered it with eloqeunce to the screen. The actors chosen for their roles excelled in their parts and Disney projected the story in the light that C. S. Lewis would have been humbled to see.

It has been long over due for a juvenile fiction of this greatness to come to the screen and this one was done well by Disney and in my opinion eclipses Beauty and the Beast and provides entertainment for adults as well.

Look for the message! There is a message within the message!

The Lion King 1½ is an ingenious sequel that retells the original film's story from the perspective of best pals Timon the meerkat (voiced by Nathan Lane) and Pumbaa the warthog (Ernie Sabella). Anyone who has wondered how this odd couple met will find out here, beginning with Timon's flight from home following disgrace and his chance encounter with the sweet but lonely Pumbaa. With the arrival of young Simba (Shaun Flemming), The Lion King's familiar tale is reborn via a fresh angle, fleshed out by returning characters Rafiki the wise monkey (Robert Guillaume), Shenzi (Whoopi Goldberg), and Simba's love interest, Nala (Moira Kelly). While the retooled narrative proves a novel experience, The Lion King 1½ is really a vehicle for voice actors Lane and Sabella, whose comic performances are shamelessly, broadly funny. Matthew Broderick, Julie Kavner, and Jerry Stiller are also in the vocal cast. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good and hysterically funny.......2007-05-24

I didn't expect much from this movie, and really only got it for my son. I was so glad that I watched it with him, though. During a couple of sequences I was laughing so hard that I couldn't breathe, which is pretty rare for me.

As far as repeat viewings, my 4 1/2 year old son, who only likes about 1/3 of the movies he sees enough to merit a second viewing, watches this constantly, and I definitely don't mind watching it with him again and again.

If you're looking for a movie with the drama and emotional impact of The Lion King, this isn't it. It's much lighter overall, and enjoyable in a different way.

4 out of 5 stars The circle of life.......2007-03-21

First came the Lion King. Then came Lion King 2; Simba's Pride. Then Disney stepped back a bit and made this movie, which retells the original Lion King, except from the viewpoint of Timon and Puumba, the Meerkat and Warthog. Funnier than either Lion King 1 or 2, it strips away the romance and drama and is pure comedy; a combination of slapstick, wit, irony, sarcasm and bad singing. More than the other two movies, this is perfect for kids as there are no scary moments, and nobody dies. All told, a great way to spend an hour+ of time.

2 out of 5 stars BAD in-between movie!.......2007-03-13

Why put this out... don't waste your money... it's a narrative of the first lion king. not intertaining to him or i. Have watched this DVD ONCE in the 2 yearsish I've had it.

1 out of 5 stars RUINS THE FIRST FILM! I hate it........2007-03-12

A few interesting concepts here and there, but crappy and terribly done execution to the point of utter stupidity. No offense to the actors, I really like them, it is not their fault. Avoid this and stick with Lion King films 1 and 2.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly wonderful!.......2006-08-26

Normally, one wouldn't expect a "straight-to-video" film to be watchable more than once. However, LION KING 1 1/2 is funny, witty, and adds some great new music to the Lion King repertoire. Many of the original voices are back; they join together to tell a fun, new story that focuses on what Timon and Pumbaa were doing while the action of the first film was taking place. For those of us who know the first Lion King quite well, this movie is all the more enjoyable, as the pieces fall into place, and we see how the two fit together. I recommend it as an entertaining way to spend about 90 minutes.

--Tom Keogh

propably one of the best animated motion pictures ever.

My daughter adores this DVD. It has so many cute songs on it and she just dances and signs the whole time it is on. Very entertaining! A+++

5 out of 5 stars Lion King sing along.......2006-02-01

It was wonderfully entertaining for my 3 year old and 18 month old. They can't read but they sang their hearts out anyway.

4 out of 5 stars Circle Of Life- Extended.......2005-08-11

This Disney DVD Sing Along Songs is an extended version of the VHS tape that cuts out the original Jiminy Cricket intros. For a newer generation of kids it gets straight to it. The new additions are Jungle Rhythm, Hakuna Matata, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Yummy Yummy Yummy, W-I-L-D. I think it also cuts out Following The Leader that featured on the VHS edition.

Recommended for Lion King fans.

5 out of 5 stars This is my favorite Disney sing-along video.......2005-01-13

I've seen almost every sing-along video, not the new dvd's that there are. This is one of my favorites. It has songs from most of the more recent movies up to The Lion King, (Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast.) I like the old video format better then the dvd format. Overall I would prefer the dvd, but only if it was made the same way.

Product Description

Another made-for-video sequel to a Disney masterpiece. As with the Beauty and the Beast and Pocahontas sequels, most of the recognizable vocal talents return, creating a worthwhile successor to the highest-grossing animated film ever. We pick up the story as the lion king, Simba (voiced by Matthew Broderick), and Nala (Moira Kelly) have a new baby cub, a girl named Kiara (Neve Campbell). Like her father before, she seeks adventure and ends up outside the Pridelands, where lions loyal to the evil Scar (who died in the original) have lived with revenge in their hearts. The leader, Zira (a spunky turn from Suzanne Pleshette), schemes to use her son Kovu (Jason Marsden) to destroy Simba. As luck with have it, Kiara has bumped into Kovu and fallen in love. This all sounds familiar since all of Disney's straight-to-video sequels have played it very safe, nearly repeating the originals' story, tone, and pace. Perhaps there were too many cooks for this production. Besides the two screenplay credits, there are eight other writers credited for additional written material. The look of the film has none of the surprise of the original but is far superior to other animated videos. In fact, the film played in European theaters. For kids, the sequel will be a favorite. The comic antics of Timon (Nathan Lane) and Pumba (Ernie Sabella) are enjoyable, as is Andy Dick as Nuka, the mixed-up older son of Zira. And there's plenty of action. The best element is the music. Relying on more African-influenced music, the five songs featured are far superior to those in Disney's other sequels. Zira's song of revenge, "My Lullaby," was cowritten by Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon. The standout opening number, "He Lives in You," was created for the Lion King Broadway smash and now finds a whole new audience.

2 out of 5 stars Very rushed childhood.......2007-04-01

I'm ----, using the kid's review cause it's so much easier.

Better than most disney followups, though as another reviewer stated, TLK 2 spent too little time on Kiara and Kovu's childhood. When watching TLK2 I could not help but feel that the cubhood was just "thrown in" so as the audience would get what was going on in the "real" half of the story. In fact, Kovu and Kiara only spent about 20 to 25 percent of the movie as cubs, which actually kept them from gaining that endearing appeal that Simba and Nala had.

Now, as for the considerably longer second half of TLK2, I must give Disney credit for hiring some mediocre directors/screenwriters for this one, instead of the usual slapped together sloppy crap that has to this day become typical of disney direct-to-video followups. When compared to other DTVs, TLK2 is very impressive. But when compared to real disney films like the original Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and Bambi, it completely flops. Just a little more effort, disney, and this could have been yet another one of your classic films.

5 out of 5 stars A great sequel thats as good as the first and my personal favorite........2007-03-11

I love this film. It and the first are really good movies. The actors + animation are great in this, plus it picks up just about where the first film left off. This is one ofe the much better Disney sequels. Recomended highly.

Hi I'm Sarah and I'm 8 years old. Now that I've got your attention, I hope that you read my review.

This is about Simba's cub Kiara. *suddenly see a full grown lioness in her place* Hey, I thought that she was a cub! She grew up in like 1 second!! That's how you'll feel when you turn on the lion king 2. It DOESEN'T SPEND ENOUGH TIME ON KIARA BEING A CUB!!!!! Her boyfriend Kovu is Scar's son. He like, is really cute and has a lot of character as a cub, but *watch Kovu grow into a lion with a mane* he suddenly loses over half of that lovableness, and his grown up voice is like, soooo forgetable!!! Simba is sooo different too. His mane is a purplish color, and he's like soo bossy and out of character!! It's not even funny either. He never leaves Kiara OR Kovu alone!!!

This is definately one of disney's best sequels. Why do I say that after ranting and raving about this movie? Watch Lady and the Tramp 2, Bambi 2, and Little Mermaid 2, and you'll understand....
