The Nativity Story is a remarkable, if frustratingly restrained, act of imagining the tale of Christ's birth as a flesh-and-blood drama actually set in Israel two millenia ago. Written by Mike Rich (Finding Forrester) and directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen), the film makes very strong impressions in a scene-by-scene way. Beginning with the slaughter (bloodlessly portrayed; this is a PG movie) of Bethlehem's innocents under orders from a paranoid King Herod (a dark and knowing Ciarán Hinds), the film then jumps back a year to the prophecy that informs Zechariah (Stanley Townsend) that his wife, Elizabeth (Shohreh Aghdashloo), will bear a child. Meanwhile, Elizabeth's cousin, the adolescent Mary (Keisha Castle-Hughes), struggles with her family to make ends meet and is promised to the carpenter Joseph (Oscar Isaac). Soon comes word to Mary, via an angel, that she will carry, while still a virgin, the long-awaited Messiah who will liberate the Jews from Herod and his Roman benefactors. Thus begins a detailed account of Joseph and Mary's hard travel to Bethlehem, while three Magi spend months crossing the desert trying to rendezvous with some point below the convergence of three heavenly bodies in the night sky. Hardwicke and Rich anchor all this in period detail, though what proves most moving are relationship nuances, especially the friendship and trust that emerge between Mary and Joseph after he is told in a dream that she speaks truthfully about her miraculous pregnancy. While The Nativity Story should appeal to almost anyone as a straightforward narrative, it is far from a secular version of the familiar Biblical tale, and thus feels a bit stifled. It might have been nice if the film could have breathed a little more with imagination, but The Nativity Story makes up for it by ingeniously weaving hints of things to come, later in Christ's life, into the action. --Tom Keogh

It's Like a Documentary.......2007-06-19

I know it's entertainment but it plays like a documentary, in a good way. This movie really takes you there; about the most authentic I've seen. I even loaned it to some folks who lived in Israel and they thought the same thing. If you've never been to the Holy Land but want to experience Christ's birth first hand, watch this movie. Very well done and good acting. Done with respect to the subject and the audience.

This movie is wonderful. From the very beginning you are captivated. The scenery, the struggles, the hardships and the characters touch us profoundly. Seeing Christ as a tiny baby, awes us. Goosebumps and tears overwhelmed me throughout this movie. A bit of humour, surprisingly enough, has also been incorporated. For example, when the Three Wise Men meet in the desert and one makes a comical remark. Their companionship is very believable. Hope and faith combine, to guide the characters , through their nearly impossible journey.

Very good movie. Gives and insight as to what biblical times were like. Although the story has been enhanced for the purpose of the movie it does not ofend any christian principles and does not take away from the real story wich is the birth of Jesus Christ Lord and Saviour. It is wonderful to see all these movies with a Christian base theme hit the movies. Something to watch as a family. Wonderful!

We saw the movie on a private screening and wanted to share with friends and family. That is why we wanted to purchase the DVD. It is a beautiful story that should be shared with children around Christmas time to teach the children the true story of Christmas.

The movie was well made keeping with the story in the Bible.

Great value.......2005-07-22

You can't go wrong with this when the price is so low. The animation quality is like that typically seen in basic Saturday morning cartoons, which is good enough for kids. What I like is that all the videos in this series give all the important details of the story, rather than giving a shallow, watered-down version as is usually the case in children's stories. These will entertain preschoolers up through junior high and the script is very closely based on the scriptural account. Each video is 45-50 minutes long, and this double feature has two such videos on the disc. The only reason I didn't give this series a 5 is that each video has a hokey song that could definitely have been left out, but for such a low price and good script, I can overlook that.

The story line could have used more detail, but this is a great family movie. The acting is what made the otherwise weak script, a good movie.
The ending was surprising, and satisfying - not leaving you with the question "And then what?"

If you are a Megan Follows fan, you will appreciate her short but poignant appearances. She should have had more presence in this movie.

Pretty Good... More of a Drama movie, than "christmas" feel.......2006-11-16

I bought this movie without seeing it. I love love LOVED Megan Follows in it! She is a FANTASTIC actress! I wished she was in more of the movie. This felt like more of a "drama" movie, than the typical "christmas" feel... (so, it depends what you are looking for). It was mostly about a man (who was adopted as a child), trying to find out more about his past. The story was a bit dry at times, but I think what made the movie was the supporting actors/actresses. There are some great characters that make it nice. I haven't decided if I'm going to keep it yet, as it was "pretty good", but not fantastic. .....(I also bought "Christmas Shoes" movie at the same time, and I thought that was better, it's a keeper... you might want to check that out as well!) :-)
Overall, it was pretty good, I guess. Megan Follows get an A++++!! :-)

Great clean Christmas film.......2006-10-13

I thought this was a wonderful feel-good Christmas movie that focuses on redemption, forgiveness, and the true meaning of Christmas. Although the acting was not spectacular, the movie as a whole was very moving. I liked Steven Curtis Chapman (one of my favorite artists) as Pastor Curtis, especially when he spoke about his (real-life) passion for adoption.
I think this is a great film - once again Max Lucado has written a fabulous story!

This video is a lot of wiggles fun. It is nice to hear traditional Christmas songs along with new Christmas songs! I love that it doesn't shy away from songs about the nativity! It is my favorite of their Christmas videos. The Wiggles songs and music are contagious and as a parent you know you will get the songs stuck in your head too. My boys love The Wiggles. Also some great singers join the Wiggles for a few of the songs.

I bought this for my 2 year old daughter. She lost interest after awhile. I think it was a lot of songs and not enough talking skits to make it interesting enough for a 2 year old. She didn't recognize all the music and I think wanted to see more talking.

Harry Smith does a nice job narrating this history of Christmas and is backed by a well-rounded and erudite group of experts on Christmas, religion, and folklore.

This documentary appeared on The History Channel ten years ago but it isn't outdated. It's nice to have for an annual Christmas season viewing.

Stephen Nissenbaum, Historian at the University of Massachusetts, reminds us that Christmas in old time England was really like a carnival similar to today's Mardi Gras in New Orleans. We also hear from Alan Dundes of the Folklore Department at U.C. Berkley, Leigh Eric Schmidt and Elaine Pagels, both of the Religion Department at Princeton University and A. W. Purdue, Historian at Open University in England.

For those who see a modern day conflict between the religious and secular aspects of the season, Penne L. Restad, Historian at the University of Texas, says that there has always been other ceremonies associated with the Christmas season in addition to Christ. This conflict goes back to the very first celebration of the liturgical feast.

The story reveals the Pagan roots for many of today's traditions and shows that many traditions we think "ancient" are recent inventions. It studies the cultural material of Christmas - trees, shopping, and songs.

Rev. Forrest Church, Minister at All Souls Church in New York City points out that people have deep needs to connect with family and friends during the Christmas season. This illustrates how Christmas is more than just a time to attend a church service; it's a time for family gatherings.

This year, why not gather with your family to view "Christmas Unwrapped."

Every segment to this interesting and relevant documentary tells so much about where we get our traditions, yet sometimes it feels rushed. It could have been a whole hour longer and I would not have moved from my seat!

Fascinating and Knowledge-Giving! .......2006-05-15

I love to discover the origins of things, because everything in life has a meaning and a purpose behind it. Events like Christmas are no exception. This DVD presentation by the History Channel covered the 3,000+ year history of the world's greatest holiday--its ancient origins in pagan festivals, the birth of the Savior, Jesus Christ, and many other interesting aspects. I might've rated this DVD four stars, because it is not as fully comprehensive as other history sources. But since I don't believe that was the filmmakers' intentions, I believe they lived up to their intentions and therefore, I rate this five stars. I would strongly recommend this DVD to anyone wanting to know more about this very special holiday.

Interesting history of my favorite holiday.......2005-12-12

For all of those you who beleive Christmas has become to "Commerecial" this is the documentary for you! You see, Christmas has always been "commercial" from the begining!

I do not want to spoil the documentary but here a few topics covered.

- Why December 25th was selected even though it probably was not the actual birthdate fo Christ.

- Why we have "Evergreens'

- The development of "Santa Claus"

- Why the firts generation of "Americans" (post 1776) did NOT celebrate Christmas.

- Why Oliver Cromwell banned Christmas after he overthrew the English Crown.

"Unwrapped" transports us throughout history and how the traditions and ideas of the holiday evolved. From the drunken festivals of medieval England to the movie "A Christmas Story" and its Red-Rider BB gun. "Unwrapped" effectively mixes the secular with the religous and shows us how and why wee celebrate it the way that we do. A must see for any fan of the Christmas holiday!

SHORT BUT FUN HISTORY OF CHRISTMAS.......2005-04-12

This documentary originally appeared on the history channel back in 1997 and has been repeated every year. It has become a holiday favorite of mine even though I've seen it numerous times. It's narrated by "Early Show" host Harry Smith and traces the roots of Christmas back to its earliest beginnings as a pagan Roman holiday of feasting. We then see Christmas virtually outlawed by the Puritans but never forgotten. TRhe holiday would enjoy a rebirth in the mid 1800's thanks to several people including Clement Moore's poem "Twas the Night Before Christmas", and cartoonist Thomas Nast who helped define the look of Santa Claus.

From there we see the holiday further defined by popular culture in movies and TV and also by consumerism, as the holiday shopping season is invented and begins to really flourish at the turn of the 20th century. Nast gives way to Haddon Sundblom's Santa paintings that he did for Coca Cola, finally giving us the jolly, fat santa we know today. Throughout he documentary we get comments from historians such as Stephen Nissenbaum and Penne L. Restad who've written their own books about the origins of Christmas. And comments from Humorist jean Shepherd, whose works the famous holiday film "A Christmas Story" was based on.

It's a wonderful documentary. As a Christmas fanatic I only wish it would have been longer but I never tire of seeing this each year. One viewing and you're guaranteed to be filled with holiday cheer!

This dvd is a great cartoon that talks about the miraculous story of the birth of Jesus in a way that kids can learn from and enjoy. In my opinion, the animation is good, the message is good, and so are the songs (my kids love them). In fact, my kids want to watch this over and over again. They also ask lots of questions during the program which leads to good discussion and explanation. Hopefully we will see more of this series made and released in the near future!

We love Bible films. This though is awful. The drawings are poor. There is an annoying boy who is supposed to be narrating the story. Every once in a while he breaks out into some horrible catterwailing that is I suppose singing by someone's standard. It's so bad it hurts. He has a horrible voice. Even the lyrics were often awful.
Please don't waste your money on this it's dreadful!
