Amazon.com essential video

The film that officially signaled Disney's animation renaissance (following The Little Mermaid) and the only animated feature to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination, Beauty and the Beast remains the yardstick by which all other animated films should be measured. It relates the story of Belle, a bookworm with a dotty inventor for a father; when he inadvertently offends the Beast (a prince whose heart is too hard to love anyone besides himself), Belle boldly takes her father's place, imprisoned in the Beast's gloomy mansion. Naturally, Belle teaches the Beast to love. What makes this such a dazzler, besides the amazingly accomplished animation and the winning coterie of supporting characters (the Beast's mansion is overrun by quipping, dancing household items) is the array of beautiful and hilarious songs by composer Alan Menken and the late, lamented lyricist Howard Ashman. (The title song won the 1991 Best Song Oscar, and Menken's score scored a trophy as well.) The downright funniest song is "Gaston," a lout's paean to himself (including the immortal line, "I use antlers in all of my de-co-ra-ting"). "Be Our Guest" is transformed into an inspired Busby Berkeley homage. Since Ashman's passing, animated musicals haven't quite reached the same exhilarating level of wit, sophistication, and pure joy. --David Kronke --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5 out of 5 stars ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE!!!.......2007-06-30

5 out of 5 stars "Tale As Old As Time, Song As Old As Rhyme" ~ Belle And The Beast, Another Disney Classic.......2007-04-07

`Beauty and the Beast' `91 is yet another juggernaut of the animated Disney classics that were released in the `90's. The list included; `Aladdin' in `92, `Pocahontas' in '95 and `Mulan' in '98. It's a close call, but this one is possibly the best of the four with 'Aladdin' featuring the madcap voice of Robin Williams a close second.

`Beauty and the Beast' scores high marks in every category; storyline, character development, animation and cinematography, sound and music that says with you long after the final credits roll by. The only possible negative I can come up with about the release of this particular version is the inclusion of the song `To be Human Again.' It is rather redundant and definitely not equal to the caliber of the rest of the soundtrack. It's inclusion only serves to detract rather than enhance an otherwise perfectly done tale.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of New Disney.......2007-04-05

What a movie, and what a set. You get the timeless tale of Belle and the Beast, and three versions of the film, in a great quaility set. It's worth owning whether you have kids or not. This is a must buy.

Another early entry in the VeggieTales series offers two lessons on forgiveness. These colorful and very funny 30-minute tapes are an entertaining way to teach Christian-lite morals to youngsters (and those young at heart). In the first episode, Jr. Asparagus has trouble understanding why he must forgive an irritating grape tourist family (who call themselves "the grapes of wrath") after they insult him. The second episode, a parody of Gilligan's Island, deals with the bumbling Larry the Cucumber when he gets a tourist boat lost on a deserted island. It moves a little faster than the first episode, and Larry's antics--always a highlight--are in top form. Along with the bouncy songs, there's also a commercial for the Forgive-o-Matic. Remember: bamboo can be used for many things! --Doug Thomas

Description

Kids learn that God wants us to forgive others; even sour grapes and absentminded cucumbers. What do you get when a bunch of very cranky grapes make fun of Junior Asparagus? One sad asparagus and one big problem. Can Junior's dad show the grapes the error of their ways? Will Junior ever be able to forgive them? Does anybody know what seventy times seven equals? Learn the answers to these questions and more as Larry the Cucumber tells the story of "The Grapes of Wrath!" A three-hour boat tour takes a turn for the worse when first mate Larry absentmindedly crashes into an uncharted tropical island! Can Skipper Bob and the passengers possibly forgive Larry for making such a huge blunder? While the professor discovers how many contraptions can be built out of bamboo and coconuts, the others discover the real reasons God wants us to forgive!

4 out of 5 stars As always, a 'tales'.......2007-02-23

My grandson is not quite two, but he can say two words very well - Veggie Tales. the tales comes out better. He loves to watch the action. My [..] granddaughter is beginning to learn that these tales come with messages. She is having a hard time 'forgiving' little brother for his 'misdemeanors' but this Tales movie has helped her progress with it.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as I hoped, but my daughter loves it........2006-10-30

When I read the discription of this film, I thought it would be different than it is. I guess I was expecting a little more humor. But it was written for children, not for adults. However my 2-year-old daughter loves it and askes to watch it over and over again, so in that regard I would call it a success.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie!!!.......2005-12-09

Sorry to hear the previous buyer got a damaged copy. They should return it instead of giving the movie a bad review. This was a wonderful illustration on forgiveness. It shows how kindness and forgiveness can change the hearts of others and how good it feels to forgive, even when we are hurt. It is just another fabulous Veggie movie!

If you want some morality tossed lightly with education in the videos your children watch, then this is a series for you. These Christian vegetables with a hip sensibility (sample dialogue: "You are so early-'90s.") play out a Batman-meets-Back to the Future scenario when a young asparagus tells his dad a lie to get out of trouble. That lie, embodied by a space alien, grows until it threatens the entire vegetable village, provoking Larry the Cucumber to heed the signal in the sky and hop into his flying Larrymobile designed by the eccentric and fallible inventor Alfred Asparagus. Action, music, and a Jerry-Springer-style deconstruction at the end with a blink-and-you-missed-it reference to God make for a half hour of involving and wholesome entertainment. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Description

"The name's Fibrilious Minimus! But you can call me Fib!" A little fib turns into a big problem for Junior Asparagus! With dad's favorite bowling plate in pieces, Junior is sure to be punished ... until a strange visitor advises him to cover his tracks with a little white lie. Dad buys the story, but Junior notices his new friend seems a little bigger now and a lot less cute! Lies have a way of growing -- and it isn't long before Junior's "little fib" has grown into a 30-foot-tall monster, threatening to devour all of Bumblyburg! There's only one person to call in a crisis like this ... Bumblyburg's own superhero, Larry-Boy! But can anyone stop the Fib from Outer Space?!? Kids will have fun as they learn that "a lie can trap you, but the truth will set you free!"

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars good learning tool.......2007-05-19

I am having trouble conveying to my child the value of telling the truth. This story put it in terms a child can relate to. Time will tell if it helps!

4 out of 5 stars Great show for the kids...oh yeah, a good lesson too!.......2007-05-12

My 2 boys really enjoy this show, it's one of their favorite Veggie Tales stories. I guess because there is a superhero involved. Larry-boy is totally cool in their opinion, and I like him too. This is by far the best Larry-boy show in my mind. The theme song is pretty rockin'...my 8-year old loves to dance to it.

4 out of 5 stars Good video, better for older kids I think.......2006-02-19

I loved the story in this video but my three-year-old was a bit scared of this one (unusual for Veggie Tales). The morale is great, as usual.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic story!.......2005-04-20

Okay, you HAVE to buy this! It's such a great way to teach a child about lying, but making it in such a way that they don't forget it. Just telling a child not to lie sometimes doesn't quite drive the message home, but Larryboy sure does! The only thing that might be slightly objectionable here is when the huge space alien lie tries to eat Larry and is actually in his mouth. My little guy got upset about that part because he loves Larry. Other than that, we laughed ourselves silly! I got this because my child decided to tell a lie and I wanted to make sure he actually understood what could happen when lies are told.

Thanks to Veggietales for making a great lesson so much more interesting and unforgettable. We now have a Larrymobile, complete with suction cup ears, and Archibald and Larryboy. Great toy! So, if you want to laugh until you cry while teaching a VERY important lesson, grab this one. It's just nothing short of awesome! Just beware, I'm now going around most of the day talking like Archibald and being asked such questions as "what are you going to make the Larrymobile do now, Archibald? What are you inventing? Can I help?" It gets difficult trying to imitate all those voices all day! Sure is a bunch of fun! Now the Larrymobile has a pizza machine on it so Larryboy won't get hungry saving Bumblyburg, and also a bed so that he can take a nap when he's tired. The imagination just never stops with these videos!

5 out of 5 stars This Video is Great!.......2003-08-08

My 3 year old loves this video.

I love the concept of this one. A small alien falls to earth. It grows as Junior keeps fibbing until he takes over Junior and the City.

Once again the Veggie Tales folks come up with a gem that is extremely well written and well done.

Paul McCartney proudly presents a collection of award-winning animated films and soundtracks including "Tropic Island Hum," "Tuesday," and "Rupert And The Frog Song." "The ideas that turned me on as a kid are the same ones that fascinate me today. I don't know that we ever outgrow our passion for adventure, humor, or romance. There's a childlike quality to the art of animation and married with a bit of music, it seemed the perfect way to bring these magical stories to life. I hope you enjoy watching them as much as I enjoyed making them." -- Paul McCartney

5 out of 5 stars Magical!.......2007-05-22

I bought this dvd specifically for the Rupert cartoon. I remembered watching it on TV many years ago when my children were very young, and I loved it so much! I taped it, and years later loaned the tape to someone and have never gotten it back! I don't remember what made me think of it recently, but I ordered this dvd of it. The other 2 animations are cute but nowhere near the Rupert one!! It is so wonderfully done, and the magical part is when the frogs sing!! I love it! (and I'm 52!)

5 out of 5 stars Delight the inner kid in all of you!.......2006-02-25

You can't imagine the Joy I received when I showed my Grandkids this wonderful and entertaining piece of Wonder, done by Paul Mccartney! They are 5 and 3 and thoroughly rejoiced at the stories of "Tuesday" and the flying frogs. They actually got the gist of the story and we laughed at the ending, which I shall not reveal!
The brilliant music of Sir Paul,in the "Tropic Island Hum" ,had them dancing all over the Living Room ,in a joyous frenzy!
"Rupert and the Frog Song"brought them to a children's fantasy world ,they will always remember.
So please see "Tales of Wonder" and release that inner child. You'll love it! I did! Sam Fasolino

Donald's Scary Tales does not contain "Skeleton Dance." It is commonly confused with a video released by Disney in the early 1980's known as Scary Tales. Scary Tales has a run time of 43 minutes and does contain "Skeleton Dance." Donald's Scary Tales has a run time of 22 minutes and has three shorts on it: "Donald Duck and the Gorilla", "Duck Pimples", and "Donald's Lucky Day." I hope this helps any fellow collectors of vintage animation.

The most interesting films in this collection involve unusual media that produce visuals unlike cartoon animation. Caroline Leaf brought life to figures painted on underlit glass in "The Street" (1976), her justly celebrated adaptation of a story by Mordecai Richler. Wendy Tilby employs the same technique to achieve a very different mood in her gracefully nostalgic "Strings" (1991). In his seminal "Pas de Deux" (1968) Norman McLaren used step printing and other optical processes to reveal patterns within dancers' movements. A striking study in black and white, "Pas de Deux" retains the power and grace that earned it an Oscar nomination more than 30 years ago. Ryan Larkin's "Walking" (1969) is a celebration of observation and motion--muscular athletes, elegant models, rambunctious kids, people on street corners display their unique styles of movement in this plotless short. Not all the films on Romantic Tales have aged as gracefully. E.B. White's narration of his 1937 New Yorker story, "The Family That Dwelt Apart," is more interesting than the funky, retro-styled animation of the 1974 short. The pacing is so slow and the points so drawn out that the anti-smoking message in "The Drag" (1963) gets lost along the way. But the better films more than compensate for the weaker ones, and any serious student of animation will want this disc. Unrated, it is suitable for ages 12 and older: brief nudity, violence, and adult themes. Complete contents: 1. A Chairy Tale, 2. George and Rosemary, 3. Strings, 4. Bob's Birthday, 5. The Street, 6. Walking, 7. Pas De Deux, 8. The Romance of Transportation in Canada, 9. The Drag, 10. The Family That Dwelt Apart. --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars If There's an Animation Revolution, the NFB is Leading it!.......2005-01-31

If you're looking at this disc, you're either an animation enthusiast who went straight to it or you've stumbled upon through some series of "recommendations." Regardless, my advice to each of you would be the same: don't hesitate to add this collection to your home library (or your public library).

Unlike some well-meaning cartoon anthologies, all of these films have received an excellent DVD transfer. The picture and audio qualities are fantastic! And that's good, because these Academy Award-Winning and -Nominated films are worth the attention. Wendy Tilby's "Strings," a hand-painted impressionistic masterpiece, is beautiful in its understated romance. Caroline Leaf's "The Street" is a free-flowing look into the death of a relative from a child's point of view. David Fine and Alison Snowden's "Bob's Birthday" is a classic of middle class Canadian humor. There are others, of course, equally good. And though these films range in age, from 1957 to 1994, they all seem fresh and vibrant - alive with the possibilities of the world's greatest medium. In fact, one of the filmmakers, Ryan Larkin, is the subject of the groundbreaking 2004 Academy Award-nominated animated short film, "Ryan."

To watch Canadian animation is to understand the possibilities of animation, treated with liberty and respect in the hands of liberated, respected artists. This disc, and others from the NFB, will have you asking, "Why don't we have an NFB in the USA?!" Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars FUN FOR ALL AGES.......2007-03-22

I greatly enjoyed these cartoons, it is perfect for kids and adults as well. It is especially good for kids because every fairy tale teaches high moral values, plus it captures the plot very well with bright colors. Better than Disney, I highly recommend it.
