In this classic 1963 adaptation of William Golding's novel, a planeload of schoolboys is stranded on a tropical island. They've got food and water; all that's left is to peacefully govern themselves until they're rescued. "After all," says choir leader Jack, "We're English. We're the best in the world at everything!" Unfortunately, living peacefully is not as easy as it seems. Though Ralph is named chief, Jack and the choristers quickly form a clique of their own, using the ever-effective political promise of fun rather than responsibility to draw converts. Director Peter Brook draws some excellent performances out of his young cast; the moment when Ralph realizes that even if he blows the conch for a meeting people might not come is an excruciating one. Well acted and faithfully executed, Lord of the Flies is as compelling today as when first released. --Ali Davis

Description

Lord of the Flies is famed theater director Peter Brook's daring translation of William Golding's brilliant novel. The story of 30 English schoolboys stranded on an uncharted island at the start of the "next" war, Lord of the Flies is a seminal film of the New American Cinema and a fascinating anti-Hollywood experiment in location filmmaking. As the cast relived Golding's frightening fable, Brook found the cinematic "evidence" of the author's terrifying thesis: there is a beast in us all.

The point, I think, of making a novel into a movie is to take the text and replace it with a visual. In this case, and in most cases, all the awesome good bits of the text are butchered in the name of artisitc license. Well "boo" to that! I cringe when my students ask to see the movie after we read the book, because it's just not the same. Where's the part with Simon and the head? And what's the deal with the parachutist? Those are important elements of the text that are either glossed over, mangled, or removed completely. I object to such tinkering with greatness! The merit in such films is only to encourage students to write reviews or to compare/contrast. Any other use, such as a substitution for the text, is not reccomended. Rhetorical question: Why don't film makers create a real version of the text? Enough said. Just read the book.

5 out of 5 stars Fly No Further.......2007-01-19

If you are looking for the definitive theatrical version of "Lord of the Flies", here it is. All essential thematic elements are included without laboring over miscellaneous detail. Sure, it could be longer to include every detail from the novel, but it loses nothing at its current length. I found it very useful as a follow up to classroom study, and my students adjusted well to the black and white presentation. You know it hits the mark when you need to pass out Kleenex, after Simon and Piggy's deaths, to a jaded bunch of ninth graders. Worth the investment!!

5 out of 5 stars One of a Kind, a True Classic.......2006-07-17

"We're Englishmen, and the English do everything right!" one of the choirboys says soon after finding themselves on the island. From then on, it's a steady degeneration into savagery. I saw Lord of the Flies (and read the Golding novel) when it first came out in the '60's, and it keeps getting better everytime I see it. There are just so many memorable images: "Piggy", the nerdy kid with the shattered glasses lens; flies buzzing around the hog's head impaled on a stick; the "Beast", etc. This is great story telling, and the kids' characters are so well delineated. Low budget and filmed entirely on location, the camera crew had to be very resourceful in overcoming obstactles. (Speaking of budgets... Criterion Editions does great work, but there's no reason to charge 40 bucks for this DVD. The transfer is excellent, but it's no better than an earlier issue on videotape put out by another outfit.) In special features, the filmakers discuss how they discovered an ingenious use of the zoom lens, a relatively new gadget at that time. (The effect is not the cheesy zoom in/zoom outs used ad nauseum on '70's TV shows.) An "indie" film of sorts, Lord of the Flies was filmed in black and white, but then, so were classics like On the Waterfront, To Kill a Mocking Bird and The Haunting. Technicolor film was very expensive, and you didn't want to leave too much of it on the cutting room floor. The '90's version is OK, but I think the film makers erred in making the kids military school students. The seed of violence has already been planted, and it's not so far a leap to savagery.

4 out of 5 stars The Power of the Conch.......2006-07-07

We were handed paperback copies of Sir William Golding's novel in my seventh grade class back in 1973, and it was not until three years later when I saw the 1963 movie. The plot was about thirty or so British schoolboys, ages 6 to 13, whose plane crashes in the South Pacific Ocean and were the only survivors. They came ashore on a small uncharted, uninhabited tropical island where survival and the hopes of being rescued took precedence. While the pilot perished in the crash, there were no other adults and the boys were left to fend for themselves.

The task was left to two of the oldest boys, Ralph and Jack. Ralph did his best to keep order with the younger boys where survival was the key by building shelters and gathering food. They would also build a fire as a signal to alert any passing ship or plane. While exploring the island and walking along the surf, Ralph and a fat, nearsighted boy, suffering from asthma, named Piggy stumbled upon a conch washed up on the shore. To Ralph the conch was an important symbol that whoever held onto it had the power to speak.

During their isolation on the island, the boys managed to get along until Jack, a choirboy who initially proclaimed that the British people were the most civilized on earth, wanted to have fun and hunt since the island was inhabited by wild pigs. This led to a falling out between him and Ralph, and two separate factions ensued. Jack's group were mainly other choirboys who split away from the main group, settling on one part of the island where they would engage in savagery with painted faces and long hair. Aside from Piggy, Ralph's group included a boy named Simon, two twins named Sam'n'Eric and some of the smaller boys that were called "littleuns".
The longer the two groups remained, hostilities between them grew more and more.

Since no adults were present, one fear they faced was that of "the Beast". Jack's group was determined to hunt down the beast, and the nightly rituals was dancing around the fire and chanting, "Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!"

The trauma was that of a weak Simon who happened to stumble upon one of these rituals and was killed by Jack's group. His bloodied body thrown into the sea. The traumas continued as Jack's attention turned toward Ralph's group. The need for Piggy's spectacles to start fires was one thing and finishing off Ralph was another. Piggy would later be killed by a boulder falling on top of him and the conch smashed into worthless pieces. Sam'n'Eric would be apprehended and forced into Jack's group. This led to the littleuns abandoning Ralph as well.

Ralph, now alone, was in fear for his own life. Jack's goal now was to hunt him down and kill him, even if it meant smoking him out by burning the entire island. While Jack and his group were in pursuit, Ralph ran as fast as he could until he stumbled on the beach and would look up at a naval officer who happened to come ashore with a rescue party.

The plot in the film came very close to that of the novel. There was a remake of "Lord of the Flies" in 1990 that, to me, did not make any impression. The plot was altered where American boys from a military school faced similar situations. As for the 1963 film, I find it a classic not one worth missing.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Let the Pig Speak to You! Unnoticed cinematography!.......2006-06-05

This film is truly a masterpiece! Unless you're so up on your research, or unless you watched the extra stuff on the DVD, you'd have no idea that it was probably the first big picture which used a zoom lens! Many of the camera shots were extremely complicated since the producers had to invent and tinker around until they could make temporary dolly mechanisms with proper tracks that worked for their sets in Puerto Rico. Dialogue had to be done separately almost every time sinc eethe soun of the sea was so loud and since our video technolgoy was not so advanced. (I don't know of advanced technology can even block the sound of the sea out.) Long, hot hours for all 1st time actors and film people- most people involved in the film didn't realize at the time that the film was risky- limited time slot- all the students hasd to miss 1 month of school, not a day more, and summer vacation.

Another interesting factoid is that this film for the Premier release had the sound all backwards, and it was fixed and played correctly all on time in 1.5 hours. A police escort was provided to have the reel shipped to a UK theater.

The DVD has a "movie version" where Golding himself reads an abridged version of his book while the entire movie plays. There's also another "movie version" where directors and other staff make various comments on the movie. Listening to the readings is probably good enough for "cliff notes" though I would not recommend ever readign only the cliff notes or just watching the video. The book is too good to just read the cliff notes only, and that accentuates the video only more. One thing to noe though is that Golding's readings do not always match up with what is being shown in the movie itself.

In this original version, the pig does not talk because they had to remove many scenes. Most of the scenes removed were due to the film being too long, but the pig talking portion may've been removed because it may have been too hard for people to handle at the time. Even now, the movie's content is questionable for a rating because it's young male children living as savages, and sometimes there are captures with very little clothes. You never see the front when someone is totally undressed, but there may be a quick flash or two or things that you can't really see distinctly. This movie is definitely NOT sexual, but if you are looking for a clean, pure movie, non-realistic movie, or if you are vegetarian, this is probably not a good movie for you to watch.

This version of the movie is very different than the 1990 version, as 1990 is in color, and this version is more raw and more real like Survivor minus all the hype and silliness. I don't remember if Piggy's real name is even mentioned in the book or the 1990 version, but it's definitely not in this version. Most people would say this version is critically much better than the 1990 version as the 1990 version strips away the fact that about half of the boys are from a choir school. American actors will tend to act different than actors from various countries with a UK background, and since the book was written from a UK perspective, in this sense, the 1990 movie loses that degree of originality from the book. There have been other "versions" of the movie, and one mentioned in the extra stuff on this DVD that was so offkilter that they wouldn't even name it "Lord of the Flies." This particular version mentioned even had girls in it and a very happy ending. This is a movie of true value, substance, and realism.

Shirley Temple stars in this 1939 version of the Frances Hodgson Burnett novel about a little, motherless girl left in the care of a girls boarding school by her soldier father, and then made into a servant there when he's missing in action during World War I. The fine tear-jerking film is a good vehicle for the famous moppet, and director Walter Lang (The King and I) makes a memorably lavish production of the Victorian milieu. The final scene, in which our Shirley is helped by one of the most famous women in history, brings down the house. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Shirley Temple's Version.......2007-05-28

Shirley Temple was in the waning years of being a child star when she starred as Sara Crewe in this movie, her first completely in Technicolor. Shirley brings her own interpretation to this classic story, and this movie has a lot of appeal to Shirley Temple fans.

Sara Crewe's father Captain Reginald Crewe (Ian Hunter) is off to fight in the Second Boer War and leaves Sara at Miss Minchin's academy. Mary Nash, who played Fräulein Rottenmeier in the 1937 Shirley Temple film "Heidi", plays Miss Minchin. Life is good for Sara until Captain Crewe appears on a list of those killed in the war. Suddenly Sara's life is thrown into turmoil as she is relegated to a dark cold attic and all her possessions are taken away.

Sara manages to persevere against adversity and continues to look for her father among the wounded returning from the war. One of the most charming scenes from the movie occurs around the point when Ram Dass (the late and always excellent Cesar Romero) aids Sara by providing her with food, blankets and coal for her usually unlit stove.

As this film goes into its final scenes, Miss Minchin accuses Sara of stealing, she meets the Queen of England, and the police and Miss Minchin chases Sara through a hospital, ever hopeful that she will find her father. How will Sara manage to avoid jail? Will she ever find her father? Watch and see!

There have been at least half a dozen versions of "A Little Princess" filmed. Shirley Temple's version deviates quite a bit from the Frances Hodgson Burnett classic. Excluding the vague relationship between this movie and Burnett's classic, this movie is enjoyable as a Shirley Temple movie. Shirley does a fine job of keeping her spirits up while suffering significant changes in her life. She always finds the sunny side even though she admits that it is sometimes difficult to do that.

If you are looking for a version of "A Little Princess" that is closer to the Burnett classic, try the 1995 version starring Liesel Matthews as Sara Crewe.

Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't Have Been Any Better!!!.......2007-02-18

This is an amazing film that shows love, friendship, and respect. Shirley Temple was so cute. She played a marvelous Sarah Crewe. At the part when she was by the window crying to say goodbye to her daddy. It was sad that he had to go to war. Ian Hunter was a great actor too. Now for Becky played by Sybil Jason. She was one of the cutest and best actress I've ever seen. I like it when Sarah gave Becky a wonderful present, and Becky almost fainted! I also like it when she says, Oh no, miss. She is so adorable. I felt so bad when Becky slipped in the street with the police after her and Sarah just because miss Minchin thought that Sarah stole a bunch of stuff. But they didn't, Sarah thought her dreams came true. That caring indian that owns the parrot snuck in and gave it to her. Well, this was a great movie, and I'll never lose this VHS. Well, bye actors, and actress.

Adding my 2 cents, this is one of the WORST quality DVDs of this title, right up (down?) there with UPC 798622308726 and UPC 645961100323. Don't bother with this release unless you'll be watching it on a 19" or smaller TV. It is horrid.

1 out of 5 stars How could GoodTimes get away with this?.......2006-06-23

I don't have this DVD, but a decade ago, I bought the exact same program on VHS. I assume that this is identical to my VHS version. There are a few things that one should be aware of.

Yes, this compilation does use shorts with their original audio intact. But, I question just how legal this compilation really is. Since the back cover says, "Not authorized with Clokey Productions or any other entity" should indicate that GoodTimes illegally released this program.

Aside from that, is anyone aware of the fact that a few of these shorts are edited. Knowing that this was originally a VHS release, it makes sense that there is a certain time-frame that couldn't be exceeded. To be more specific, "Gumby Crosses the Delaware" is edited quite a bit. The uncut version runs a couple minutes longer than most Gumby shorts, so this episode was shortened quite a bit, but at least keeps in enough so the story makes sense. Aside from that, in the short "Baker's Tour" the scene in the rolling pin room has been shortened.

Lastly, I know for a fact that GoodTimes got these prints from 1980's Gumby VHS releases from Family Home Entertainment. As a matter of fact, I own an FHE Gumby release that contains 7 of the 10 shorts on this compilation.

My suggestion to all Gumby fans out there. Don't wast $6 on this edited collection of shorts illegally put together. Instead, hunt down those old VHS releases by FHE. But, if you must have Gumby on DVD, pay a visit to the Dollar Store. There are a few Gumby shorts that have fallen into the public domain, and I have seen a few Gumby collections show up at Dollar Stores.

5 out of 5 stars He's Blowing My Mind!.......2005-04-21

I sat there, my face covered with a dry-caked crimson mask, listening to the seer they called "El Jacques Dinamita," astounded by his commentary of the wanderer known as Gumby, a green Dali-esque Paul Bunyon of sorts, who was accompanied by an orange mare named Pokey. I was absolutely astounded, and begged him "Don't blow my mind," but he wouldn't relent, telling of Pokey's gallop through the woods, climaxing with the two friends having a picnic! I was flabbergasted, and exclaimed "You are blowing my mind!"

I had to portal into the age of the DVD to further my knowledge of this philosophical presence. My friend Finley (who used to draw Donald Duck's legs) picked up this DVD, and we watched it over a spaghetti dinner and wine. I sat there, my jaw slack, astounded that, just when I thought I could never attain a deeper state of surrealistic truth, here is a young man who can slide for miles on one foot, penetrate a book, and has a Yogic compassion for his four footed friends; while the orange mare could ease Gumby's strain by giving him a ride, Gumby insists on walking side by side with Pokey, in the truest spirit of Albert Camus.

Finley was floored by Gumby's odyssey, yet he was scared when these Storm-Troopers called "The Blockheads" tried to enforce a police state on our noble protagonists. Finley said with great trepidation "What's Gumby gonna do?" and I put him at ease by bellowing "He'll sick his Mother's Posse (on them)!" And by Golly, Gumby stayed greener than broccoli, his stoic horse by his side, reversing any Quixotic pretensions. Rest easy, my child, for Gumby and Pokey love you!

Betty Boop "Her Wildest Adventures"

I have noticed some mixed reviews about this product with most of the negative ones being ghost written by our competition so i wanted to tell everyone the real truth about this product since we are the people who produced it. I am using my wifes Amazon account to post this.

We have taken some of the greatest classic cartoons ever produced, from some of the greatest animators in history, and meticulously added hundreds of hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars of detailed restoration to both the sound and images in order to make them look as good as they did the day they were first released. Each cartoon is digitally processed first through photo shop frame by frame, and then using both the Davinci and the new Pogo systems to remove every scratch, line, dropout and artifact possible. We then we do a full color restoration at Technicolor using the original color palates to match the colors, tones and shades. We then digitally clean up the sound track to remove all the hiss and scratches and carefully add new foley sound effects, ambience and digitally remix them back onto the cartoons.

The result is our animated DVD series which is currently distributed in both the United States and Canada by Goodtimes Entertainment. These fully restored, full motion, color animations have not been seen in this condition since their original theatrical release. Sit back and be amazed and enjoy some of the finest and funniest animation ever made.

thats why were to only studio doing these that have the blessing and participation of Fleischer Studios and the only one to receive the prestigious Gold Medal from the Classic Animation Preservation Society.

I highly recomend this product to any lovers of classic animation.

2 out of 5 stars Should Have Been Titled Pudgy's Wildest Adventures.......2004-04-20

This is a collection of 10 Betty Boop Shorts from the post Hays-Code era. The Hays-Code was Hollywood's self-censorship mechanism which was eventually replaced by the Motion Picture Association of America rating system (G, PG, R, etc). Anyway, Betty Boop was basically ruined by the Hays code: it robbed her of much of what made her special (most notably her short skirts!). Here are the episodes included in order:

1) You're Not Built That Way, 1936
2) Training Pigeons, 1936
3) Pudgy Takes a Bow Wow, 1937
4) Pudgy Picks a Fight, 1937
5) My Friend the Monkey, 1939
6) Baby Be Good, 1935 (1 of 2 pudgy-free episodes)
7) A Language All My Own, 1935 (the 2nd)
8) A Little Soap and Water, 1935
9) Not Now, 1936
10) We Did It, 1936

Anyway, these 10 episodes are a pretty poor sampling of Betty's work, even by Hays-Code standards. She hardly even appears; Pudgy is in 8 of the 10 episodes and owns each one of them almost entirely. Betty only gets a chance to shine by hopping a plane to Japan in #7. If you just want to get a sampling of Betty, check out the other Good Times DVD, "The World's First Female Superhero". If you want to see it all (including her best early episodes), wait for the "Definitive Collection" to come to DVD. If you have to have this, buy it in the dual packaged edition with the "World's First" disc also available here on amazon.

4 out of 5 stars This one has the good stuff.......2005-01-17

It doesn't take long reading reviews on Popeye DVD's to realize everyone wants to get their hands on the old B/W Max Fleischer cartoons. And this one has at least 5 good ones, all restored.
My kids love this stuff. It doesn't try to teach you anything.
Of course, they can't appreciate the differences between the Fleischer and the King incarnations. It's all funny to them. For the price this one is worth it. The DVD compression quality is good too.

Apparently aimed at very small children and the simple-minded, adults may decide that the best aspect of this kiddie flick is the clamshell box with its dual image "Magic Action Art." Though strong technically, the blend of digital effects, animation, mattes, and miniatures is eventually too much of a hodgepodge. The plot is a confusing jumble of classic fairy-tale elements and jarring contemporary accents, attitudes, and lowbrow humor. The only real performers are Martin Landau, who is very classy as Geppetto, and a sad-looking Geneviéve Bujold. Syrupy child-star Jonathan Taylor Thomas makes you long to toss another puppet on the fire. However, the story basically follows Carlo Collodi's fairy tale and the music is enjoyable, especially the songs by Stevie Wonder. This should maintain the interest of youngsters age 8 and under. --Rochelle O'Gorman

1 out of 5 stars Sicko Pinocchio.......2007-05-18

I watched most of this movie with a Kindergarten class as a substitute teacher. I found it totally inappropriate for children and was shocked to see that it was rated G. It has many very dark scenes and a considerable amount of violence as well as several sexually suggestive scenes. I'm sure many of the kids had nightmares after watching it. Any parent should consider this a PG-13 film and then be cautious about kids seeing it. For the little ones the Disney version is the way to go.

4 out of 5 stars for OLDER viewers.......2006-09-03

Contrary to the initial review by Rochelle O'Gorman, this film is NOT for the SIMPLE-MINDED, nor is it appropriate for YOUNG viewers!!! It is for OLDER viewers and interesting only because of the ANIMATION techniques, filming in Prague, costumes, scenery, acting, etc. DISNEY is the only true, traditional Pinocchio---with special music, Christian theme with angels, a real friend in Jiminy Cricket, the gold fish, the cat--much more imaginative and suitable for very young children AND adults!!!

4 out of 5 stars Nice-Looking, Nicely Done Pinocchio.......2006-04-15

This is one of the better "family films" that adults would still enjoy, and I don' mean to use that as a clich?. Suffice to say it's a fast-moving story, is creatively done and looks super on DVD. This was a stunner, visually-speaking.
The creativity - especially for a film 10 years old - involves the wonderful special-effects that make the famous wooden puppet so lifelike. I haven't seen it in eight or nine years but when this came out first on VHS I remember being shocked at the visuals and how real things looked. The DVD enhances it another notch.
This is not an animated film, and the story is a bit different from other versions. How faithful this is to the original story, I cannot tell you, because I never was a big fan of the story. I can tell you, however, that Martin Landau is very good playing Pinochhio's creator "Geppetto."
I found it interesting that the cricket in this story was called "Pepe," not Jiminy Cricket. At any rate, this is a nicely-done version of the famous kids' story.

5 out of 5 stars Charming version of old favorite.......2004-12-02

Definitely a keeper in the family movie collection. I had already seen the movie and decided to buy it and so when pucrhasing at Amazon I was so surprised at a few poor reviews listed for this movie that I took time to write. It is a great production of a family favorite depicting old time values and morals while entertaining due to engrossing and almost believable characters of this old family favorite. My 6 and 5 yr old kids were enthralled and describe it as their favorite movie ever. Even Dad stayed awake through the entire movie! It may not work for teenagers but for a relaxing family movie evening, you will not be disappointed and I will keep our copy for ever.

5 out of 5 stars WOODY. 16th april 2004........2004-04-16

A great family film, just depends what type of film you like, in my opinion, this is a suitable film for any age. If you don't like this sort of film then this isn't your type. Even so it is a brill film see it.

5 out of 5 stars Captivates children of a certain age.......2006-10-11

When my son turned two he received Hard Hat Harry videos from a mother of three. She highly recommended this series to me despite adult criticisms regarding its low budget production. It simply captivates children ages 18 months to four years old.

Each episode is introduced by two children and the likeable Hard Hat Harry. Their escapades are interspersed with a song or two plus footage from real farms (or construction sites or race tracks, etc.). The songs are catchy and likable (We enjoyed "What does a cotton picker pick? ...a forklift lift? ...a hay bailer bail?"). Hard Hat Harry and the kids continue chatting as the real life footage rolls. They offer up explanations and information in a laid back, conversational manner.

I recommend this DVD not only for the entertainment value but because it empowered my son by helping him to understand the world around him. He was already interested in tractors, plows and combines but Hard Hat Harry helped him see how the whole process of planting, harvesting and processing grain culminates in an end product like bread.

1 out of 5 stars Amateurish.......2006-01-20

Good ideas and concepts for children to be exposed to and to learn from...but please, please, get the information right! Confusing a monkey with a chimpanzee shouldn't happen. Real Life Space Adventures needs editing but by someone who has already finished their schooling! Both videos were produced on a strict budget, by the looks of things, with an amateurish look as a result. Not worth any more than $2 in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars A true Classic ~ one I will always love.......2007-04-07

I first saw this film here in the UK in the mid 1980's, when I noticed it at the local rental shop. My dad made a copy for me, and I watched it for years. But one day, the tape gave out, and had to be thrown away.

But {finally!}, a copy is on it's way to me now, so I can re-live those happy memories, and be able to share them when I have kids.

The American Rabbit {as was the title over here}, is a wonderful tale for kids and adults alike. It shows that good will triumph over evil, that anyone can be a hero, and that the world isn't always the terrible place we all seem to think it is.

Rob shows that the most unlikely of heroes can save the day.

Buy this film, enjoy it, share it, and remember the days when childrens films had some morals and substance to them.

4 out of 5 stars Great kids movie but for growups too!.......2007-01-09

My son loved this movie as a small child. I really liked it too. I purchased this copy for my friends 5 year old who loved it as well. Great family movie for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars I NEVER SAW THIS BEFORE.......2005-09-10

I have to say this was a good show. I had never before heard of nor had I seen the American Rabbit till seeing the picture of the cover on Amazon.com. There are some real lessons in here that sadly seem lacking and in strong need of being told in todays cartoons/shows/stories. As for the feel of the show I thought it was a bit cheesy only at the very begining becasue you could tell it was Superman like and the super villian boss was dumb looking in his suit...

But the story teaches one who listens some real good American morals and lessons. Near the end the American Rabbit is chasing the bad guy villan who is near defeat, but the bad guy decides to cause a dam to break and kill the two people below. There is an old guy and his son who are trapped just below the dam right in the path of a dam that is about to break. The American Rabbit has to decide. Stop the dam and save these two trapped people, saving them but letting the bad guy get away which would result in many more victims, or continue on and stop the villian, which would also result in the deaths of the two below. Well, the American Rabbit sees trouble and rushes to save the two trapped in the path of the river, but the old man tells the young American Rabbit to do what you have to do, we understand, go after the bad guy, we'll be okay. That's a hero. That's a lesson we need to not forget, and learn.

5 out of 5 stars When the bad guys were bad, and the good guys unflawed........2004-11-02

This movie aired the year after I was born. My parents recorded it on beta (remember that standard?), and it became my favorite movie two years later. Unlike many animes, the viewer will probably have little trouble establishing an emotional connection with the characters-- the reactions of the characters are not culture-specific, but rather universal.

While the storyline seems to have been written with the superhero-loving kid in mind, there are overtones only catchable by adults or near-adults. This causes it to still be a feel-good movie, but also a study in the attitudes of the time when it was released.

As the story of the rabbit Rob, who has come into a legacy which causes him to race into action against ill-willing villains as a striped and spangled super hero, this animated guy-joins-band-gets-gal classic harkens back to the movie era when bad guys were still bad, and heros had hearts of gold.

5 out of 5 stars Best Cartoon Ever!.......2004-07-23

I also watched this religiously when I was growing up. I had it permanently rented out from the video store. It was just last year that I hunted it down again. Since then I've watched it several times. There's something so clever about the whole thing. And there's all these obscure references to Nazism and Capitalism and I even think some of the characters probably represent historical figures. My 8 year old niece also really loved it.

    Description

BLACK STALLION Mickey Rooney returns as veteran horse trainer Henry Daly, the role that earned him his fourth Academy Award nomination, from Carroll Ballard's critically praised 1979 screen adaptation of The Black Stallion. This story follows the further adventures of The Black from Walter Farley's books, as Henry and young jockey Alex Ramsey (Richard Ian Cox) enter him in France's biggest horse race, the Prix de Chantilly. Approximately 90 minutes/COLOR LEGEND OF COUGAR CANYON The beautiful and desolate Navajo tribal lands of the desert South-west are among the wildest, most rugged of all areas, where many legends haunt the windswept mesas and many creatures stalk the lonely canyons. The native people tell the tale of Cougar Canyon, where danger and wonder walk hand in hand, and when a young goat wanders away from the herd, two young boys must go alone to seek her in the haunted canyon. What they find, and what finds them, is an adventure into danger in this story for all ages, full of colorful Navajo folk tales, breathtaking scenery, and incredible footage of the battle for survival in the animal world. Narrated by sagebrush star Rex Allen, The Arizona Cowboy (TV's Frontier Doctor), this semi-documentary was shot on location, with members of the Navajo nation, and is also known as The Secret of Navajo Cave.
