A great action sequel to the first movie! I can not wait for the next one!

3 out of 5 stars HD Version No Better than Non-HD.......2007-05-27

This is a great movie - but don't bother buying the HD version as it is not a noticeable improvement in picture quality from the original. I have a very good regular DVD player that uploads to an HD output by interpolating the missing pixels from a regular DVD and outputing it in 1080 HD. The good HD movies are much, much better than the interpolated regular DVD movie (Chronicles of Riddick, Enter the Dragon are much, much better) whereas the average HD movies - like the Bourne Supremacy - don't look much different. Save your money and buy other HD movies that make a difference in picture quality. If you don't own this movie - then buy it because it is amazing - if you own it in regular DVD format already - don't bother buying the HD version as the picture quality is not much better and doesn't justify the extra spend.

4 out of 5 stars James Bond meets Jack Bauer.......2007-05-21

The Bourne Supremacy picks up two years after the original film ended and continues to shed light on Jason Bourne's adventures. The former assassin returns to Europe to find out why he is still hunted down by the CIA.
Matt Damon, Karl Urban (from LOR!), and the rest of the cast carry out their performances very well (Matt Damon is once again amazing in his respective role!).
Moreover, it was a pleasure to see the lovely Julia Stiles, though a bit more exposure would have been just right...
Overall, the setting, the plot, the dialogues, and the music are all good.
In short, The Bourne Supremacy is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!

4 out of 5 stars supreme moview.......2007-05-17

1The movie Bourne Supremacy was a great movie by writers Robert Ludlum and Tony Gilroy. 2Since this first started as a book in the 1980's, the movie writers needed to update the story almost immediately 3Straightfowardly the movie director, Paul Greengrass, kept the title of the book which is Bourne Supremacy. 5When the movie was released on July 23 2004, audiences loved it because it had realistic action. The run time of the move is 1 hour and 49 minutes. 6Its rating is PG-13. 4Filming in multiple locations across the world, making the magnificent movie was not easy. The main actors are Julia Stiles, Matt Damon, Joan Allen, Franke Potente, Brian Cox, and Karl Urban.
The main spy characters are Jason Bourne, Ward, and Landy. 2During the movie the minor characters in the movie are Nicky, Marie, Jarda, and Danny Zorn who do not show up very often. 5While in India, Jason and his girlfriend Marie are living off the grid when suddenly they are attacked by a rogue assassin. Who is the rogue assassin working for? 6Marie dies. 3Urgently Jason takes up on his role as a secret agent. 4Moving, advancing, and targeting swiftly across the globe, Jason Bourne infiltrates the spy network in Berlin, Moscow, and New York City.
1 The CIA is looking for some Russian documents which are highly prized. 5While the CIA is searching, a rival spy destroys the documents and frames Jason. Jason finds out closely afterwards. 3Quickly Jason has to prove, show, and verify his innocence by finding a mole inside the CIA. 6Jason is chased very often. Jason must evade people. Jason gets revenge. 2In the chase scene, Jason flees the Berlin police because the CIA declared him a public enemy in Germany. 4Fleeing from the CIA, Jason is looking for evidence while staying out of the radar of the CIA.
3Eventually Jason kills his rival, almost at the very end. 5While in Moscow, Jason talks with a daughter of a high-ranking Russian politician whom Jason killed years ago. 1Jason eventually discovers, notices, and perceives that Ward, the veteran director, is the mole. 2After Jason discovers him, Ward gives Jason the evidence. Then Jason turns it over to Landy as she is getting ready to go back to the USA. 4Taking his gun, Ward kills himself. Landy sees that Ward committed suicide because he was incriminated. 6Jason calls Landy. Then he disappears like a ghost at the end of the movie.
The movie was amazing.1The action was very realistic throughout most of the movie. 2At every turn, guns fire, cars race, and charges explode. 4Engrossing the viewer, the movie shows how the spies of the fictional world operate. 3Quietly spies blend into certain areas where military forces can not go because it is too dangerously, obviously, and unwisely an area they should be in. 5While real spies have to keep their cover, movie spies like Bourne get to use more action which is exciting. 6This was a great movie.

3 out of 5 stars Will you please stop shaking the camera!!!.......2007-05-09

I loved the first bourne movie and I would have liked this one a lot more if the director hadn't felt the need to shake the camera violently everytime a good action scene was on. You know, it really doesn't help me enjoy the movie when I feel extremly dizzy after a car chase scene. What the hell was this director thinking?. The story was actually pretty good but I just couldn't take the camera shaking. I just hope to god that the director doesn't do the same thing with the third bourne film.

5 out of 5 stars Eddie Lives!.......2007-07-02

I must say that "Eddie and the Cruisers II, Eddie Lives !" is one of my favorite Rock & Roll films. Second only to the original "Eddie and the Cruisers". The soundtrack is fantastic and Michael Pane's performance as Eddie Wilson is perfect. John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band wrote and perform all of the original songs. However, Pare's lip syncing is so perfect you cannot tell he isn't doing the actual singing. Although the sequel stands on its own, I recommend viewing the original "Eddie and the Cruisers" first. This DVD version is long overdue and is a must see for all Rock & Roll fans.

5 out of 5 stars Here's the truth about the movie........2006-05-24

Somewhere I saw people said How come Sal has the tapes when they were given to Doc? The answer is Satin Records told Sal when we received the tapes there was another mystery tape in the box, which means Doc could have given Satin the tapes, Sal didn't because he didnt even know about the tape. The other was they removed Frank in the beach scene and put in Sal. It's not actually Sal, I don't think Sal would dress like a hippy. But if you watch the movie at the end it says Frank was played by some actor, which means they just had to replace the footage of Tom Berenger with some other Frank actor. The only problem was I didn't think people dressed like that in 1963.
I had to buy this movie on Ebay. It came brand new and wrapped. It looks like Canada released this movie but America didn't. The quality isn't too bad, about 90% good. There are some seconds where the film gets darker. Also, the movie starts wiggling in the beginning. Hard to explain, you know the quote from Eddie in the beginning, it seems to move a quarter of an inch then goes back quickly, during the whole movie this seems to be going on. I didn't notice it as much as the movie went on, but maybe I just got used to it. This movie isn't quite as good as the first one, the acting was a little over the top. But I felt the music is just as good as the first. I bought this new on Ebay for $9.99 plus shipping, it was definitely worth it.

The beauty of the South American landscape and of Gael Garcia Bernal (Y Tu Mama Tambien, Bad Education) gives The Motorcycle Diaries a charisma that is decidedly apolitical. But this portrait of the young Che Guevara (later to become a militant revolutionary) is half buddy-movie, half social commentary--and while that may seem an unholy hybrid, under the guidance of Brazillian director Walter Salles (Central Station) the movie is quietly passionate. Guevara and his friend Alberto Granado (Rodrigo de la Serna, a lusty and engaging actor) set off from Buenos Aires, hoping to circumnavigate the continent on a leaky motorcycle. They end up travelling more by foot, hitchhiking, and raft, but their experience of the land and the people affects them profoundly. No movie could affect an audience the same way, but The Motorcycle Diaries gives a soulful glimpse of an awakening social conscience, and that's worth experiencing. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars beautiful movie.......2007-06-22

I thought this was an extrordinarily beautiful movie. The cinematography, music, acting, and pace are all superb. I'll leave out the Guevara/Castro rant, since this is not the appropriate forum, and it's not relevant to a review of this movie. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A love letter to a pre-Che.......2007-06-16

I've read both books that this DVD is based on, and the way they are put together makes an interesting film. If you haven't yet discovered the talents of Garcia Gael Bernal, you certainly will want to see more of his films after this. Beautifully photographed, will make you want to take a tour of Latin America yourself. Perfect casting all around. Truly gives you a better understanding of Ernesto "Che" Guevaro's motivation for who he was to become. The Widescreen edition is a must to appreciate the magnificent magical feeling that makes you want to get on the back of the motocycle with them.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-05-30

This movie is one of the best foreign flix i have ever seen. the way that they portrey Che is so interesting. finding out about one of the most memerable rebels in all of history. seeing his beginings in communism and the point of view of the native people in chile peru and all of south america. This movie is a great historical film as long as a great Drama

5 out of 5 stars Why do so many people get this film wrong..........2007-04-29

First of all, this is NOT a documentary, this is a film portraying the life of a 23 year old Ernesto Guevara de La Serna looking for adventures and inspiration. There was no need to give more details or be more specific about this character. He was a young man at this point, far from becoming the infamous warrior the world came to know as Che Guevara. I love this film, in fact it one of my favorites. I am appalled to learn about his actions in Cuba and his decision to stop practising medicine. I cannot deny that I both, admire and despise what he became, but the point of this movie is to depict his journey through South America, not how he became Che Guevara and end up with Fidel Castro in Cuba.

5 out of 5 stars Let the world change you and this film also........2007-04-11

One of Gael's insperational & professional roles as "che" hands down. A really really great movie of how the world chages a person and makes them wanna change the world he lives in.

Ben-Hur scooped an unprecedented 11 Academy Awards® in 1959 and, unlike some later rivals, richly deserved every single one. This is epic filmmaking on a scale that had not been seen before and is unlikely ever to be seen again. But it's not just running time or a cast of thousands that makes an epic, it's the subject matter, and here the subject--Prince Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) and his estrangement from old Roman pal Messala (Stephen Boyd)--is rich, detailed, and sensitively handled. Director William Wyler, who had been a junior assistant on MGM's original silent version back in 1925, never sacrifices the human focus of the story in favor of spectacle, and is aided immeasurably by Miklos Rozsa's majestic musical score, arguably the greatest ever written for a Hollywood picture. At four hours it's a long haul (especially given some of the portentous dialogue), but all in all, Ben-Hur is a great movie, best seen on the biggest screen possible. --Mark Walker

Description

After his boyhood friend Messala's fanatic loyalty to Rome makes him a powerful enemy, Judah Ben-Hur is found guilty of an attempted murder he did not commit. His family is banished and he is enslaved on a warship. Through his ferocity in a raging sea battle, he is able to escape and become a horse trainer. To exact his revenge, Ben-Hur decides to compete against Messala in the Roman chariot races. They race, locked in a battle to the death. Barely surviving, Ben-Hur forsakes the sword for Christ and finally finds redemption. Winner of a record 11 Academy Award, including Best Picture and Actor (Charlton Heston).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Two great films on this dvd collection........2007-06-25

The second and more recent one from 1959 is really slightly better as it looks a little more authentic than the '25 version (see my amapedia review for more on the '59 version). By more authentic I mean that in one scene in the '25 version a lady is romancing a man and she has a ridiculously 1920's hairstyle (probably to appeal to contemporary audiences). This is all that takes away from an otherwise brilliantly done silent film starring Ramon Navarro as Judah Ben-Hur. The scenes where Judah is taken away from his mother and sister by the evil Messala (Francis X. Bushman) are poignant and memeorable. I understand part of this movie was shot in Italy. Very good use of Christ as a (supremeley important) supporting character in this film and nice scenes early on of the lady playing the Virgin Mary as well.

5 out of 5 stars Ben-Hur (1959).......2007-06-25

One of MGM's finest widescreen spectacles, involving thousands of extras, over 300 sets (including a life-size replica of a Roman hippodrome) and a cadre of stunt coordinators, this massive production nearly bankrupted the studio when first produced. But the payoff was equally grand: Heston's Oscar-winning performance and a hefty box-office gross validated the costs of operating on such a vast canvas. It is also epic filmmaking at its best, featuring a mesmerizing escape at sea and the most thrilling, heart-poundingly authentic chariot race ever seen on film--at 20 minutes, no less! Majestic in scale, yet sensitive in its portrayal of a vengeful man touched by his encounters with Christ, "Ben-Hur" is a monumental entertainment directed with unwavering commitment and faultless taste by old pro William Wyler.

Even-numbered Star Trek movies tend to be better, and First Contact (#8 in the popular movie series) is no exception--an intelligently handled plot involving the galaxy-conquering Borg and their attempt to invade Earth's past, alter history, and "assimilate" the entire human race. Time travel, a dazzling new Enterprise, and capable direction by Next Generation alumnus Jonathan Frakes makes this one rank with the best of the bunch. Capt. Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his able crew travel back in time to Earth in the year 2063, where they hope to ensure that the inventor of warp drive (played by James Cromwell) will successfully carry out his pioneering warp-drive flight and precipitate Earth's "first contact" with an alien race. A seductive Borg queen (Alice Krige) holds Lt. Data (Brent Spiner) hostage in an effort to sabotage the Federation's preservation of history, and the captive android finds himself tempted by the queen's tantalizing sins of the flesh! Sharply conceived to fit snugly into the burgeoning Star Trek chronology, First Contact leads to a surprise revelation that marks an important historical chapter in the ongoing mission "to boldly go where no one has gone before." --Jeff Shannon

Description

In their second big screen adventure, the year is 2373 and the crew of the Enterprise-E has learned the Borg has returned. Because of Captain Picard's past experiences with the Borg, Starfleet has ordered the Enterprise to stay out of the fight. Realizing too much is at stake, Picard disobeys orders and takes the Enterprise to Earth. His knowledge of Borg technology leads the Federation fleet to victory, but a Borg sphere escapes and opens a temporal vortex. The Enterprise pursues and travels back to April 4, 2063; the day before the first warp flight.

5 out of 5 stars Star Trek saga.......2007-05-13

Good epilogue for the BORG neverending threat to humanity!!! Great Jean-Luc PICARD in the end against the BORG QUEEN!!!!! Not so bad the Klingon WORF!! Nice and offhands rendering of the human race left (especially the creator of the warp dirve engine, COCHRANE, played amazingly well by James CROMWELL!) after the nuclear world war!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie!!!!.......2007-04-05

I really love this movie but beware, I don't know what I was thinking I thought this was the directors cut which usually puts back all the deleted seens in a movie. Well this one isn't it. It will show you the seens deleted as extras but not intergrated back into the movie. Thats my only complaint but that is a minor complaint and totally my fault. The movie itself is a great, try watching it on a big sreen TV you will love it esp. the opening fight seen in the movie when the Borg attack the fleet. This is a great buy so don't hesitate if you haven't seen the movie or just want it for you collection.

3 out of 5 stars Loved the movie, but unimpressed with the extras.......2007-04-03

I love the movie. I'd be hard pressed to say it's my favorite Star Trek movie since it's so hard to beat Wrath of Khan, but it's definitely my favorite Next Gen movie.

The bonuses however, are hardly worth purchasing the two disc collector's edition. I understand that the movie was filmed before the days of DVD and the producers didn't go into the project expecting to hand over hours worth of bonus material. It shows. All of the extras felt like they scrounged together whatever behind the scenes footage they could find and tried to build little documentary segments out of it. In my opinion, it failed spectacularly.

I, personally, was hoping for extras about the Borg Queen. Her makeup, her art direction. There is some of that, but not a lot. The only mention of her makeup is in passing and there are no behind the scenes footage of the makeup process at all.

All in all, I found the extras to be seriously lacking and not worth the additional price.

5 out of 5 stars The Line Must Be Drawn Here!.......2007-04-03

I'm not sure if I'd have ever started watching Star Trek TNG if it wasn't for Patrick Stewart and his amazing performance in this movie. How they ever got such an amazing actor to jump on board is beyond me but I'm very happy that he did.

When I watch or read a favorite movie or book, I tend to always skip sections to get to the part that was constantly replaying itself in my head over and over again all day. In First Contact, I repeatedly jump to Patrick Stewart's "Moby Dick" scene where he passionately expresses his obsession with destroying the Borg. It doesn't happen too often when an actor performs exactly how you'd like to express yourself in a way that you never realized might be in you. I first saw this movie when I was young so it made a distinct impression on me when I saw it. Been a Trekkie ever since.

I also thought James Cromwell played Zefram Cochran incredibly. When he comments on the disparity between him and his future self to Commander Riker, it's just funny how life can turn out and that there is still hope for us all. Without those two actors, the movie still would have been awesome but it would have just been another good movie but nothing you really had to watch over again.

So in my opinion, rent it if you must but it's definitely worth the $10.99. By far the best movie from the TNG series and although I more often than not skip most of the movie to get to my favorite parts, I enjoy them enough to watch the movie in it's entirety once in a while.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly The Best Star Trek Movie?.......2007-03-28

One editorial review is right: the even numbers are better.

There is a Next Generation episode which shares the name "First Contact", but the only common thread is the contact with a planet and those outside. Actually, the emphasis is not as much on the first contact but the battle to allow it to be so.

SKIP THIS PARAGRAPH IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE, BECAUSE IT CONTAINS SPOILERS! I found elements of different movies in this story, especially hints to Star Treks III (destroying the Enterprise) and IV (going back in time and telling select earth people something about the future). Sometimes, it takes away from the originality of the story, but this is an exception.

Unlike Generations, this movie developed the teamwork that made this series and all other Star Treks. However, the movie gets right into the action.

I find the Borg the most disturbing of the Star Trek villains, and this fit the bill. Alice Krige was excellent in her role.

There are themes that were great in this movie. For example, the friendship between Captain Picard and Data and sacrifice. The issue of revenge and obsession. The issue of submission to authority and the boldness to take risks when necessary. The fact that people we look up to as heroes are just ordinary people like you and I who are motivated by the same things we are (or maybe not as high a motivation). As a Christian, I can see spiritual warfare implications in the movie, as well as illustrations of pitfalls we believers can fall into.

Just as Love Affair inspired An Affair to Remember and Sleepless in Seattle, Folies Bergère inspired That Night in Rio and On the Riviera. In Walter Lang's Technicolor version, Danny Kaye takes on a dual role previously assumed by Maurice Chevalier and Don Ameche. A master of mistaken identity, Kaye makes it his own. His Jack Martin is an American song and dance man based in Monte Carlo. When playboy aviator Henri Duran (Kaye with French accent) returns from his latest adventure, Martin notices a resemblance. He also notices Duran's neglected wife, Lili (Gene Tierney). After Duran is called away on business, Martin is enlisted to impersonate him for an important function. That gives him the chance to cozy up to Lili--and infuriate dance partner Colette (Corinne Calvet). Duran pays him back with an impersonation of his own. It isn't Twelfth Night, but On the Riviera is an enjoyable diversion. It also represents a family affair, since designer Oleg Cassini outfitted wife Tierney and Sylvia Fine penned tunes for husband Kaye (except for the standard "Ballin' the Jack"). Though considered a minor effort in the canons of Lang and Kaye--the musical was more of an audience favorite than a critical darling--Fox has done right by this long-unavailable title with an interactive press book, featurettes, lobby cards, and a pristine print (heavy on the brilliant blues). Look sharp for future Fosse hoofer (and wife) Gwen Verdon as a dancer and Tierney's famous Laura portrait above Duran's fireplace. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-06-27

This is a great movie. A fun remake of "That Night in Rio with Don Ameche. Danny Kaye is a very verstile entertainer who can sing, dance and act. He really pulls off the double role he plays as an entertainer and a wealthy man who has a reputation as a ladies man. A couple of the songs in this movie harken back to my childhood and enhances the enjoyment of this movie. A must see!

4 out of 5 stars A Dance Historian's Point of View.......2007-06-13

Warner set the standard with well-produced DVDs of classic MGM musicals - 20th Century Fox is up for the challenge.
A lot of love and care went into the making of this DVD. It comes in a slipcase and contains four b/w lobby cards. The picture and sound were superbly restored. By the way, the format is of course 4:3 fullscreen, not widescreen. The extras section includes the trailer, a still gallery and three comprehensive featurettes:

"The Riviera Story" (10 minutes): "On the Riviera" is a remake of "Folies Bergère" (1936) and "That Night in Rio" (1941), respectively. The featurette compares the three films and its stars.

"A Portrait of Danny Kaye" (26 minutes): A biographical look at Kaye's impressive life, featuring, amongst others, his daughter Dena Kaye.

"The Jack of Clubs - Choreographer Jack Cole" (10 minutes): An appreciation of Cole's work (that's been long overdue).

I don't consider the film a great comedy. (If you want to see Danny Kaye at his comical best, get "The Court Jester".) Nevertheless he does a good job in a dull plot that's constructed solely around his persona. The two girls, Gene Tierney and Corinne Calvet, contribute nothing except their lovely looks.
The big plus however, besides Kaye's performance, is the lively and hummable score by Kaye's wife Sylvia Fine and Cole's galvanic choreography featuring the stunning Gwen Verdon. (Verdon was a dancer in a class of her own. Jack Cole, Michael Kidd and her later husband Bob Fosse knew it and made great use of it. She danced for Cole in many shows and films, always receiving solo or centre stage spots. Her work as a dancer can be studied in the films "Meet Me after the Show", "The I-Don't-Care-Girl", "The Farmer Takes a Wife", "David and Bathsheba" (available on DVD), "The Mississippi Gambler", "The Merry Widow" (available on DVD in South America), "Gentlemen Marry Brunettes" and "Damn Yankees" (available on DVD). All of them a testament to her unequalled talent.)

Let's take a look at the five musical numbers:

"On the Riviera": Kaye performs the title song impersonating Maurice Chevalier. A little tip of the hat to the man who originally played Kaye's character.

"Rhythm of a New Romance": A big production number that introduced Gwen Verdon to movie audiences. It starts with a dynamic Can-Can. (Two years later Verdon would do the Can-Can again in the MGM version of "The Merry Widow". This would land her a job in a new Cole Porter musical - called "Can-Can". The rest is Broadway history.)
The number continues with an amazing East Indian dance sequence featuring Verdon and Jack Cole (wearing a Kathakali mask). (Cole studied authentic Bharata Natyam and other ethnic dances and integrated them brilliantly into his style.)

"Ballin' the Jack": This is one of Kaye's trademark songs. It was part of his stage act for many years. Here's a very laid back and sophisticated version.

"Popo the Puppet": A highly imaginative number featuring Danny Kaye and the dancers Gwen Verdon and Ethel Martin in Commedia Del Arte costumes. The droll song received an Oscar nomination. (By the way, look for the similarities between the tambourine players and the tambourine playing doctors in the "Some of These Days" sequence the next time you watch Bob Fosse's "All That Jazz". Fosse admired Jack Cole's work.)

"A Happy Ending": The finale is pure heaven for anyone who's interested in dance history and a rare chance to see almost the entire core of the Jack Cole Dancers together:
There's Cole himself, Gwen Verdon, Buzz Miller (An excellent jazz dancer. He would also work extensively with Fosse (in both the stage and movie version of the "Pajama Game" and in "Redhead"). He was Jerome Robbins' boyfriend.), George and Ethel Martin (They were the most loyal of Cole's dancers and had been working with him since the early Forties. George Martin appeared in all of Cole's Columbia musicals usually partnered with Rod Alexander and Alex Romero. George and his wife Ethel would re-create parts of Cole's original stage choreography for Richard Lester's movie adaptation of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum".)

If you'd like to know more about Jack Cole I recommend to get Glenn Loney's book "The Unsung Genius - The Passion of Dancer-Choreographer Jack Cole". Look for a list of his films under imdb.com.

Thanks 20th Century Fox for helping to keep the legends alive. I hope that you will continue to release rare and forgotten musicals on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars On the Riviera.......2007-06-13

This is probably one of the most underrated movies of all time.
Alright, some of the musical sequences are dated - especially the "Rhythm of a new romance"-number - but the dialogue and the story are still extremely witty and funny. And it's Danny Kaye at his best. Not as brilliant as in "The Court Jester" three years later, but more mature and refined than in "The secret Life of Walther Mitty" (which is a great movie, too!), Kaye gives a wonderful performance as nightclub entertainer Jack Martin ("Ballin' the Jack" and "Happy Ending" are just wonderful). And he plays rich aviator Henri Duran who neglects his wife and only comes to his senses when he thinks that she's betraying him with Martin. Kaye is believeable in both parts.
"On the Riviera" is a very entertaining musical comedy and it makes fun of every glamour cliché ever used in Hollywood.
Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars On the Riviera.......2007-06-11

An adorable Danny Kaye movie. He plays two parts a rich playboy and a night club singer/dancer. Danny can not be beat - I especially love his song, "Popo the puppet" - that alone is worth buying the movie!

Warping into syndication in 1987, Star Trek: The Next Generation successfully launched its seven-season "continuing mission" of the starship Enterprise, and this classy DVD boxed set gathers the show's inaugural season in crisp picture clarity and dazzling 5.1-channel sound. A ratings leader with a sharp ensemble cast, this revamped Trek honored series creator Gene Roddenberry's original Trek concept, nurtured by returning veterans like producer Robert H. Justman and writers D.C. Fontana and David Gerrold. Several first-season episodes have original-series counterparts, and while the season was awkwardly inconsistent for all involved (including Roddenberry's heir apparent, producer Rick Berman), in retrospect the series began on remarkably solid footing.

Patrick Stewart was perfect as Enterprise Captain Jean-Luc Picard, while Marina Sirtis struggled with a wretched hair bun and an ill-defined character, eventually blessing Counselor Troi with delicate nuance. Denise Crosby made a strong but underutilized impression as Security Chief Tasha Yar, and left the series before season's end, allowing writers to develop Klingon Lieutenant Worf (Michael Dorn) into a fan favorite. Brent Spiner transcended Spock comparisons with his triumphant portrayal of the android Lieutenant Commander Data; and while Jonathan Frakes was accepted as First Officer Will Riker, fans ultimately rejected Wil Wheaton as ensign Wesley Crusher, the teenaged son of the ship's doctor (Gates McFadden). Still, these 25 episodes laid a firm foundation for subsequent seasons, and highlights include the Raymond Chandleresque "holo- novel" of "The Big Goodbye," Data's backstory in "Datalore," the Klingon rituals of "Heart of Glory," and a Romulan encounter in "The Neutral Zone." The DVD supplements (all on the seventh disc) are good enough to make anyone wish for more: four featurettes recall myriad first-season challenges, filled with insider perspective and enough NextGen trivia to satiate all but the most obsessive Trekkers back on Earth. Looking back, it's easy to see why NextGen lived long and prospered. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars New Crew, New Light.......2007-06-29

Having first watched this show when I was 14, and being a fan of the original series, It was great to go back and watch them all again with older eyes. I have to admit I hated Wesley Crusher, because I saw him as a "know it all", plus his futuristic cosby sweaters and later his rainbow pleated uniform screamed "dork!" Watching it now, I don't hate him at all! In fact, I have an endearing sense of "he is adorable" coming through. I can respect what it took to be an actor that young, coming off of Stand By Me into a mostly adult cast. The crewmember I ended up hating now, as an adult, was Tasha Yar. She is supposed to be chief of security, yet she is impulsive, and overly emotional! The woman cries all the time, I just wanted worf to back hand her off the bridge. I was so relieved when the "tar monster" snuffed her out. The beginning episodes were a bit rough. The planets were similar to Classic star trek, purple green and fake rocks everywhere, but it worked. The story lines were also hard to get into, although anything with "Q" in it I love! Of course I still detest Jeordi's Banana Clip, and Deanna Trois Phallic hair, but I still adore this season nevertheless, every show has to find its footing and by the end of it they did.

5 out of 5 stars "Lets See What's Out There".......2007-05-16

Watching this DVD does bring back happy nostalgiac memories for me;towards the end of September in 1987 my folks allowed me to stay up until 11:00PM (which seemed like eternity then)to watch the premire of Star Trek:The Next Generation. At the time I was fascinated:the huge ship, these new characters,Q-it was such an grand adventure.Seeing "Encounter At Farpoint" 20 years later my opinion has improved;it's such a different story from anything done in TOS.It's almost like a feature film.A lot of people will tend to critisize this season for not quite being as secure characterizations. That is present here to a certain degree:in episodes such as "Code Of Honor" and "The Last Outpost" Captain Picard tends to make a big deal of being French.Another interesting notion about this season is Worf's smugness and strange lack of purpose;until the unfortunate death of Tasha Yar Worf seemed to be an overly aggresive token Klingon.None of that matters to me though because I think the first season of TNG is one of the best and most unique this show ever did.Actually some of the look of this season I prefer the look of this season, especially early on.The lighter colors of the crew quarters lighting and the jumpsuit uniforms (that would extend through the second season),as well as a lot of character exploration. This first season should be re evaluated by fans who once looked at this corney and incomplete at first.TNG is,to me (even at this stage) is the best of the Star Trek spin offs and has aged beautifully to this day!

El Dorado doesn't quite have the scope or ambition of Howard Hawks's greatest Westerns, Red River and Rio Bravo. But this relaxed picture, made near the end of Hawks's marvelous career, still shows the steady, sure hand of a master. Hawks reunites with John Wayne, playing a hired gun mixed up in a range war; Robert Mitchum is Wayne's old pal, now a sheriff in the midst of a hopeless drunken bender. James Caan, in one of his first sizable roles, plays a kid who can't shoot straight and wears a funny hat (every character in the movie makes fun of this hat). As the plot moves along, it begins to resemble Rio Bravo rather closely ("I steal from myself all the time," Hawks was fond of admitting). But in El Dorado the heroes are a bit older, their powers a bit weaker; at the end Wayne must revert to a bit of subterfuge in order to get the drop on the steely gunslinger (ice-cold Christopher George) he needs to put down. As relaxed as the movie is, Hawks and Wayne and company are in good spirits, with plenty of broad humor and easy camaraderie on display. Hawks and Wayne would make just one more film, the disappointing Rio Lobo, before ending their fruitful partnership. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars Action, Humor, and John Wayne: Who could ask for more?.......2007-04-18

This movie would be easy to confuse with the movie "Rio Bravo" bacause both movies carry a plot thread involving a drunken lawman who must be sobered up in order to keep him alive, but don't be deceived. These are two different movies with entirely different story lines. I have both titles in my collection and am glad to have both.
In this one James Mitchum gives an outstanding performance as the drunken marshal with John Wayne coming to his aid. John Wayne and James Caan sober him up with a witches brew of which, thank the Lord, we don't have to watch, or smell, the effects.
Mitchum is trying to protect a family of ranchers from the schemes of a land grabbing cattle baron played to cynical perfection by Ed Asner. (this was before he bacame beloved as Lou Grant on tv.) Before the movie is over the plot twists and turns like a coyote covered with fire ants, but everything comes out all right in the end. (except for Ed Asner, He's dead.)
In all a good action adventure, with some violence. It is interesting to note that John Wayne is shot early in the film and is still suffering life threatening effects at the end. A relief from so many movies of the period where the hero suffers major wounds and a couple of days later shoots down a herd of villains and whips the bad guy in a fist fight.
It is also worth noting that while this movie takes some humor from devices to sober up the co-star, neither this movie or "Rio Bravo" treat alcoholism as a humorous condition. In both movies, it is treated as a life-threatening and humiliating condition, with lingering and painful side-effects.
Sorry, neither Dean Martin, Angie Dickinson, Rick Nelson, or Walter Brennan appear in this movie. It doesn't need them. If you want to see them, buy "Rio Bravo"

5 out of 5 stars Ride boldly ride.........2007-04-02

A great movie however many times you watch it. I'm glad I found it here.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite John Wayne film.......2007-03-28

Yes, El Dorado has a similar plot as Rio Bravo, and it stars the "Duke" and is directed by the same director.
But, El Dorado has a much tighter and leaner script, and doesn't contain any dreaded "filler" like Rio Bravo, nor does it have the woefully miscast Ricky Nelson. (It's still a superior western though)
El Dorado co-stars the much more effective James Caan, and the incomparable Robert Mitchum in a spectacular performance.
A great story, a wonderful and superb cast, lots of great action and masterful direction make this a "must-see" western. (that "splinters in the hand" scene has to be seen to be believed ! )
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Hired Gun Amidst a Ranchers' War.......2007-03-01

The setting for this western is Texas sometime after the Civil War. There are a number of unique, or at least uncommon, elements in this flick. It begins with a delightful song, "El Dorado", and the showing of still paintings of Old West scenes. Later, a shootout occurs not only inside and near a saloon, as one might expect in a typical western, but also in a church (belfry and then sanctuary). Women (notably rancher MacDonald's cowgirl daughter) are more prominent in this flick than in most other westerns.

There are many violent scenes in the film. Not only are shootings shown, but so also is a vendetta stabbing. Wounded men (including Cole Thornton) are shown in agony.

The politically correct won't be happy with the start of this film. Cole Thornton (John Wayne) mentions that, before the arrival of rancher MacDonald in the area, "there was nothing here except Indians and coyotes". But of course this film was made at a very different time from today (1967).

Rancher MacDonald's son, Luke, is sent to guard the ranch. This is, later according to Thornton, "A boy doing a man's job." Luke falls asleep and, at the sound of an approaching horseman, wakes up and opens fire wildly. The horseman fires back as a reflex, wounding Luke in the lower abdomen. It turns out that the horseman is none other than Cole Thornton. Luke writhes in agony, explains to Thornton what happened, and then commits suicide with his own gun.

Thornton tells father MacDonald what happened, and the latter sadly accepts the truth. But Luke's cowgirl sister does not. She set up a revenge ambush for Thornton, and fires a rifle at him. She says triumphantly: "There, you won't be killing any more boys!" But it turns out that she only managed to wound Thornton in the lower back. For the rest of the film, Thornton has episodic problems with disabling back pain and arm paralysis from the bullet lodged in his back, which he neglects to have removed promptly.

In time, one of MacDonald's remaining three sons is kidnapped, and Cole Thornton works for his release. The local sheriff at first is of no help. He is constantly drunk, and is a laughingstock for everyone around. But in time he gets sober, returns to the saloon, and has a bit of revenge against those who had been laughing at him.

At one point, Thornton seems to have an upper hand in a gunfight with MacDonald's kidnappers. But then, at the worse possible moment, Thornton is hit with a spell of back pain and arm paralysis. He is totally helpless! What will the kidnappers do to him? Will he at least get out alive? Will MacDonald's kidnapped survive and ever go free? I will not spoil the ending by revealing it.

4 out of 5 stars A Great opening.......2007-01-12

I happen to be a big fan of Olaf Wieghorst and own an original oil. The vehicle of DVD is ideal for the purposes I bought this particular movie. I realize that many purchasers will care less about the item I like the most and that was the eight or more paintings by Olaf that come with the beginning credits. When a picture or painting comes on the screen the DVD can be be paused and the painting can be studied. It is a great experience. I hope that this review will encourage others to watch the movie with the eye of a western art lover.

There were only two ways for "classic Trek" cast members to appear in a movie with the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation: either Capt. Kirk and his contemporaries would have to be very, very old, or there would be some time travel involved in the plot. Since geriatric heroes aren't very exciting (despite a welcomed cameo appearance by the aged Dr. McCoy), Star Trek: Generations unites Capt. Kirk (William Shatner) and Capt. Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) in a time-jumping race to stop a madman's quest for heavenly contentment. When a mysterious energy coil called the Nexus nearly destroys the newly christened U.S.S. Enterprise-B, the just-retired Capt. Kirk is lost and presumed dead. But he's actually been happily trapped in the timeless purgatory of the Nexus--an idyllic state of being described by the mystical Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) as "pure joy." Picard must convince Kirk to leave this artificial comfort zone and confront Dr. Soran (Malcolm McDowell), the madman who will threaten billions of lives to be reunited with the addictive pleasure of the Nexus. With subplots involving the android Data's unpredictable "emotion chip" and the spectacular crash-landing of the starship Enterprise, this crossover movie not only satisfied Trek fans, but it also gave them something they'd never had to confront before: the heroic and truly final death of a beloved Star Trek character. Passing the torch to the Next Generation with dignity and entertaining adventure, the movie isn't going to please everyone with its somewhat hokey plot, but it still ranks as a worthy big-screen launch for Picard and his stalwart crew. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Nearly On Par with Serenity as a Faithful Adaption.......2007-05-01

I'll admit, the makers of this movie took some bad missteps, such as reusing effects footage from another film and perhaps spending a bit too little time brainstorming the film's central space battle. HOWEVER, with that said, this movie did not deserve alot of the bad press it got. As a rabid fan of the Next Generation on TV, I can say that stylistically, thematically and aesthetically, this film has much in common with the TV show from which it originated, which I suspect, is where it ran into trouble. Simply put, the style of the Next Gen TV show was dissimilar to that of the more recent original series films. Unlike the later Trek film incarnations, Generations, like the TV show, wasn't all about action, explosions and phaser rifles. It was about cool ideas. From the destruction of the Enterprise D, to the disastrous introduction of Data's heretofore barely referenced emotion chip, Generations seems designed to make the audience uncomfortable by employing eerie plot twists and evocative lighting. By doing so, it achieved something profound. It made the audience appreciate just how exposed these characters who we love are to the cold, awesome forces operating within the universe, making the viewer want to cling to them all that much more.

As the character Q once said on the TV show, "It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross. But it's not for the timid."

Like the more recent Serenity, Generations took chances, and did so with respect for its source material.

2 out of 5 stars My Least Favorite Star Trek Movie.......2007-03-28

First, let me give the pluses. This movie was a bridge between the Star Trek casts. It also hit science fiction at its best with the Nexus utopia, shown to be pleasant but not the best. Malcolm McDowell was a good villain, though not at Alex DeLarge (A Clockwork Orange) proportions.

The strength of each of the Star Trek incarnations is a great ensemble. There is some heirarchy, but you still have a team feeling. This movie does not develop either the original or the Next Generation ensembles. The focus is only on three characters: Captain Kirk (William Shatner), Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart), and Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg), who took the mentor role in this story. There are only short appearances from the original cast, and only enough interaction of the Next Generation cast to show they're there.

There were other ways one could have bridged the gap that could have been better and more satisfying.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT BUY!!!!.......2007-02-09

Delivery was prompt and in good condition. I gave you a 4 because the DVD case itself looked to be sundamaged or exposed to too much heat, as the plastic cover was wrinkled as if someone took a flame to it.

4 out of 5 stars Fair start for the next generation crew.......2006-11-30

I think this is a fair start. One could almost say it was like a tv episode in my opinion, just with a bigger budget. It seemed to be rough on the edges I thought. I guess they were not to concerned since they were destroying the next gen sets anyway after this film to pave the way for new sets in future films. I don't think anyone could be satisfied ever with how Kirk kicked the bucket.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent reminder of the TV series.......2006-10-24

I watched this movie in the year 2006. It has been many years since the series "Star Trek" and "Star Trek TNG" no longer make any new episodes. In fact, the author of the series, Gene Roddenberry, has died.
That is why it was so pleasant for me to see this film. It reminded me of my favorite characters - Jean Luc Picard, Lt. Commander Data, etc.
You get to see also some characters from the original Star Trek series, such as Captain Kirk, etc.

I liked this movie, because its events happen not only in space, but also at sea and in a mountain. The most amazing event is that Data installs an emotions chip in his positronic relays. The chips gives him a sense of humor. Data smiles, laughs and does funny things like never before. His emotions and sense of humor are very cool, although he has a hard time learning to live with them, at first.

There is also a scene in the "nexus" - a place where nothing is real, time has no meaning, so you can go into the future, or to the past and see dead people (such as Captain Kirk). It is a very gentle, heart-warming, nostalgic moment of the movie.

Overall, I strongly recommend this movie. Sci-fi action, explosions, special effects, humor - this movie has everything!

Star Trek fans were decidedly mixed in their reactions to this, the ninth big-screen feature in Paramount's lucrative Trek franchise, but die-hard loyalists will appreciate the way this Next Generation adventure rekindles the spirit of the original Trek TV series while combining a tolerable dose of New-Agey philosophy with a light-hearted plot for the NextGen cast. This time out, Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his executive crew must transport to a Shangri-la-like planet to see why their android crewmate Data (Brent Spiner) has run amuck in a village full of peaceful Ba'ku artisans who--thanks to their planet's "metaphasic radiation"--haven't aged in 309 years.

It turns out there's a conspiracy afoot, masterminded by the devious, gruesomely aged Ru'afo (F. Murray Abraham, hamming it up under makeup resembling a cosmetic surgeon's worst nightmare), who's in cahoots with a renegade Starfleet admiral (Anthony Zerbe). They covet the fountain-of-youth power of the Ba'ku planet, but because their takeover plan violates Starfleet's Prime Directive of noninterference, it's up to Picard & crew to stop the scheme. Along the way, they all benefit from the metaphasic effect, which manifests itself as Worf's puberty (visible as a conspicuous case of Klingon acne), Picard's youthful romance with a Ba'ku woman (the lovely Donna Murphy), the touching though temporary return of Geordi's natural eyesight, and a moment when Troi asks Dr. Crusher if she's noticed that her "boobs are firming up."

Some fans scoffed at these humorous asides, but they're what make this Trek film as entertaining as it is slightly disappointing. Without the laughs (including Data's rousing excerpt from Gilbert & Sullivan's HMS Pinafore), this is a pretty routine entry in the franchise, with no real surprises, a number of plot holes, and the overall appearance of a big-budget TV episode. As costar and director, Jonathan Frakes proves a capable carrier of the Star Trek flame--and it's nice to see women in their forties portrayed as smart and sexy--but while this is surely an adequate Trek adventure, it doesn't quite rank with the best in the series. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars 2 hour episdoe.......2007-06-12

Out of all the TNG movies this one was probaly like just a long version of the show. It was such a very simple concept. A movie based on the violation of the prime directive. It had moral dilemanas that had to be addressed and it reminded me so much of the show. If you are a fan of the show you will love this movie.

The only downside is it's not going to wow you with the fights or space battles. It's a solid movie but, if you aren't a trek fan this isn't the one that will convernt you like say Nemesis with the big battles there would. Still I definately recommemend this film.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad...for Star Trek.......2007-05-09

I forgot that I actually enjoyed this movie. Of all of the Star Trek films, this is the one that most closely resembles the series it was based upon.

4 out of 5 stars Jonathan Frakes has a hit, but not a smash.......2007-04-30

Before I go any further, allow me to make this clear: I am a die-hard Trekkie who grew up on the original series episodes and has come to love TNG as well, so I mean to call it like I see it.

I don't wish to give away any plot elements, but in order to adequately review the movie, I must make some minor "spoilers." This film highlights one of the ethical dilemmas that has come to be a hallmark of Star Trek since its inception. In a move rather similar to that of President Jackson in relocating the Southeastern Native American tribes, Starfleet officials in league with a shady group of aliens conspire to remove a primitive people from their world so that Federation citizens may reap the benefits of an unusual healing radiation emenating from the rings of said planet. Picard, ever the force of truth and justice, refuses to go along (hence the "Insurrection" title), leading to a battle between good and "greater good."

On the whole, I feel this was the most well-written and executed TNG Trek film. While I personally adored the previous 2, I thought their storylines were a bit contrived (not to mention the continuity errors caused by Kirk's "death" at the beginning of Generations). The deeper storyline of this movie is both its weakness and its strength; I had a bit of a problem following the plot the first time I saw the film, but after I was able to appreciate it, I realized how much better of a storyline it actually is. I highly recommend this movie to all TNG fans, and any Trekkie who enjoys the "ethical dilemma" storylines.

5 out of 5 stars It's like one bit fat sweet Next Gen episode.......2007-04-07

It's like one bit fat sweet Next Gen episode with a much bigger budget, you'll love it. Just buy the video and see.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-03-30

This is a GREAT Movie!!! If you like Star Trek then you will love this movie. In this movie you get the famous TNG Crew and the Enterprise E plus you get a cool story about morals and doing the right thing!
