5 out of 5 stars Awesome workout.......2007-07-02

This has been the best thing I ever used. I had picked up the 3-dvd set after reading a good review in fitness magazine of one of the videos. It was the first thing to make a difference for me. I got this one when it came out. You will see amazing results very quickly. I love it. It is about the only thing that has worked really well for me. I've gained a lot of strength but have actually gotten smaller muscles, not bigger ones. I would highly recommend, although this is definately not for the faint of heart.

5 out of 5 stars Will Blow You Away!.......2007-06-29

I have many workout videos but NONE of them can be compared to this one! It is a killer and Jari is very cool not annoying like most of the instructors... Very natural, real, simply awesome!

3 out of 5 stars Not for those with bad knees.......2007-06-26

I would have rated this higher but the next day my knees really hurt. So i am ordering slim and lean which doesn't appear to have the cardio. Also very minimal abd workout on this dvd. I really like the set up with the modified workout and she is very easy to listen to and to follow. I like the weight lifting segs very much will let you know how the slim and lean worked out

5 out of 5 stars A Personal Trainer in Your DVD Player.......2007-06-22

After working with a personal trainer for about a year, I was looking to branch out on my own (and save some money!) and bought several DVDs to keep me motivated to work out. Out of everything I tried, Jari Love's Ripped workouts are the BEST. It is almost exactly what I was doing with my trainer at sixty bucks an hour. It helps if you buy this in conjunction with her other DVDs and vary your workouts, and if you do them 3 times a week as she suggests you should see results between 4-6 weeks. I would say this is for Intermediate level exercisers as it is pretty challenging (her easiest one is just called "Ripped," BTW), but she always has one of her "Rippers" doing modified exercises (as well as someone who is making the workout more challenging). She's easy to follow and very encouraging. GREAT workouts!

5 out of 5 stars No more plateau.......2007-06-21

This is how you burn fat. Blending cardio with compound strength moves. I've been doing this workout for about 3 weeks I LOVE it, its such a challenge. I already see I difference in muscle tone and energy. I'm in good shape and I just could not complete my first workout with Jari. It gives you plenty of room for improvement and its a great mental challenge as well. I never right reviews but I feel its my duty to spread the word about such an effective workout. Sincerely, Farrah, Long Island NY
PS I just bought ripped core and slim and lean. I'll let you know.

5 out of 5 stars Very inspiring .......2006-08-11

I just received the video and I've already seen it twice. It is very inspiring. The movie really makes you feel how hard it was to go through the baja 1000. The way the movie was made and the look of the commentator really takes you back in the 60's

If you like off road races then this is a must see video.

Jessica Lange and Michelle Pfeiffer are quietly dazzling in this underrated adaptation of Jane Smiley's best-selling modern version of King Lear. The two play sisters of a stubborn, alcoholic Iowa farmer (Jason Robards), who decides to leave his fertile farm to them and their youngest sister (Jennifer Jason Leigh). It is a decision that rends the family, setting siblings against one another and forcing long-held secrets out of their guilty closets. The family dynamics become ever more destructive, and the refuge of sanity the two older sisters have created may be their only salvation. It's a tragedy not quite on a Shakespearean scale, but anyone who appreciates the difficulties of a dysfunctional family will relate to the heartbreak--and the promise of redemption. Pfeiffer especially is breathtaking as the good housewife Rose, whose rage at her father and her husband is never far from her placid surface. --Anne Hurley

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very Dramatic, Great Performances, & Memorable.......2007-04-15

This is one of those very dramatic dramas that seem to stay with you after you watch it. Three sisters have very conflicted feelings towards their father who is growing more and more disorientated as he ages and continues to be an alcoholic. What happened in the past to make this father resent his daughters so much and why do they feel the way they do? If you like family in distress movies then this is sure to peak your interest. Michelle Pfeiffer and Jessica Lange have a very good on screen chemistry.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT MOVIE.......2007-03-30

Not a big box office success this is really a very good movie. Great performances from Michelle Pfeiffer, Colin Firth, Jessica Lange and Jason Robards.

4 out of 5 stars Subtle and thoughtful drama with a powerhouse cast.......2005-09-22

I wish this hadn't bombed at the box office because this was an excellent film adaptation of one of my favorite contemporary novels by Jane Smiley. I guess the themes are a little tough--incest, madness, marital infidelity, ugly family secrets, cancer and the corrupting power of sex and money aren't exactly pick-me-ups. But the actors are superb--Jessica Lange really captures the essence of her trapped-in-girlhood character as does Michelle Pfeiffer as her feisty younger sister who masks her pain behind anger. Jennifer Jason Leigh, Keith Carradine, Jason Robards and my favorite, Colin Firth (complete with Midwestern accent--check out how he tries to say "farm" like an Iowan!) complete this stellar cast and everyone is terrific.

The story is a slightly different take on the story of King Lear, with Robards as an aging farmer who decides to leave his one-thousand acre farm to his three daughters, sparking life-changing conflict for them all. The story is quietly told, with two of the sisters finally acknowleding the abuse of their childhoods and searching for new hope as adults. Mixed into the tale is a subplot of adultery and betrayal.

I looked for this film for years after reading the book and am glad to have finally experienced it. If you like the stuff of real-life drama, this is a compelling story that will hold your attention and make you think.

5 out of 5 stars Jessica Lange!.......2004-11-26

I initally saw this film in the theater. It deeply moved me since it realistically paralleled an event that had recently occurred in my own family. A couple years later, I watched it again on video to see if my reaction had been more personal than an actual response to the art of the film. No doubt, the acting, story and scenery evoke feelings that persist to this day.
Without the realistic and nuanced performance of Lange, the movie would be considerably less effective. As she recently did in Normal and in other respectable interpretations as in Frances and Music Box, Lange nails the intricate emotions and mannerisms that allow the viewer to get into her skin and empathize with her character's reality. Her character deals with loyalty, innocence, devotion, and betrayal, all of which Lange portrays in rich colors.
Pfeifer and Leigh are also commendable in their interpretations, and with the other talented actors a quilt of familiar comfort is weaved. Yet, as the film progresses, we see that the wear and tear of life experiences can unravel and fray that which was once beautiful, or at least had the potential to be.
A Thousand Acres is subtle but unforgettable. I'm purchasing it to view at my leisure and to share with others.

4 out of 5 stars Pfeiffer and Lange: Powerhouse Performances.......2004-10-26

This is one of movies where the memorable performances of the leads particularly Pfeiffer and Lange was probably now forgotten because of the failure of the movie, at least in the box office and reception by the critics. The movie has some flaws at least from my point of view, like the lack of coherence of the whole movie, some felt rushed and underdeveloped, lacked of style in storytelling, and weakness in the script. But I personally think this movie is still worth seeing, it has a certain quality that made it compelling and very relatable.

Michelle Pfeiffer gave a tour de force performance she interpreted Rose with such anger you almost feel why she's angry. She gave so much depth to her interpretation, the way her eyes well up and the intensity of her face in the confrontation scenes. It was heartbreaking and very touching. ("I did not forgive the unforgivable, that's my sole solitary and only accomplishment") Jessica Lange gave the subtler and more vulnerable attack to the character. She's a little laid back and understated and the result is really moving performance. I think Pfeiffer gave the better performance only because she got to play the more intense, showy, and ultimately tragic character.

The late Jason Robards was very good. He created a character that's both disgusting and also compelling. In the scene where he appeared to start exhibiting signs of senility and he just lost in the case regarding the farm, You can just feel what Pfeiffer was feeling when she said to her dad while going out in the court "Daddy, you lost" and she said it with such desperation and anger. That's probably one of the worst feelings, not being able to make the person who've done you wrong know what he did.

For fans of Pfeiffer and Lange, I recommend this movie. They gave one of the best performances of their careers. For those who are not, but you're a fan of good performances I also recommend this film.

5 out of 5 stars This guy is amazing.......2007-03-20

Not only has he had a successful MX career, a freestyle career marked by the first and so far only double backflip, he is now also a rally champion (think subaru WRX on dirt), and in this DVD he decides after watching Dust to Glory that he wants to try and race in the Baja 1000 in both a truck AND on a bike. So in about a month or two's time, he assembles a team and bikes, gets a truck ready, and they enter the race! I won't spoil it for anyone, but this guy is just amazing. Not only that but he seems incredibly easy going and a guy that would be fun to be around. If you liked Dust to Glory (and who wouldn't), then you owe it to yourself to have this DVD as a companion.

4 out of 5 stars Good not Great. .......2007-03-12

This is a soild movie and good action. I would suggest it to anyone who likes riding and or racing.

A chronicle of the adventures in the life of Robert Elliot Burns whose experiences inspired the film "I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang".

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Harrowing but brilliantly done.......2005-12-08

This is a film based on a true story, the story of Robert Burns, a World War I veteran who fell upon hard times, turned to petty crime in a point of desperation, and then went through the harrowing experience of the Southern prison system, with all the inhumanities that are attendant to that. Deprivations and cruel punishments abounded, as prisoners were literally whipped to death and set to work at back-breaking labour on chain gangs. At a certain point, Burns escaped, and finding a new life in a Northern state, became a prosperous businessman, still ever mindful of his escapee status. Burns, being assured of the justice of the system and that such inhumanities would not happen again, was led to seek to clarify his status by returning to the South, only to be absorbed once more into the inhuman system. However, this time his public profile was known around the country, and his cause became a cause célèbre. It forced a change in the prison system that remains a turning point in the humane treatment of prisoners to this day.

This film is based upon Robert Burns' own book, 'I am Fugitive from the Georgia Chain Gang'. Directed by Daniel Mann, the story stars Val Kilmer in a remarkably full role, with powerful performances by Charles Durning, Kyra Sedgwick and Elisha Cook Jr. (a veteran actor whose credits include 'The Maltese Falcon' and 'Sergeant York', in this his final role). The scenes are often breathtaking for their brutality and realism, and the overall tone is very true to life, albeit a reality we often want to hide from.

This is a rare film, not yet available on DVD, but one well worth watching, particularly for those who are interested in American history of a different sort.

5 out of 5 stars Dvd.......2005-11-07

Does anyone know if this movie will ever be transfered to dvd? This is a very good movie a rember seeing it as a kid and it blew me away its a very good performance by val kilmer probably his best.

5 out of 5 stars AN AMAZING PERFORMANCE BY ONE AMAZING GUY.......2000-10-18

The first words that spring to mind when I think of this film is 'WOW'. Val Kilmer brings this character of Robert Elliot Burns to life, probably too well, and makes you believe that you're living it with him... the sign of a truly amazing actor... The things Mr Burns went through, the struggles that he faced seem so horrific it makes you think of the question 'This can't be real, can it?'.. What makes it more horrific is that it's based on a true life, a real person, real situations, real actual events...It blows my mind every time I watch it...Val Kilmer was the right person to play it because he puts so much into the role, he makes you feel the pain that he's suffering. This is a sign of an amazing, talented, young man..who just keeps on getting better...if that's possible. If I could I'd give it more marks than 5 because it is definitely a film not to miss.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie for Kilmer fans.........1999-07-17

An early film by Val Kilmer. Some may think it drags on but it ends up being a pretty good movie. Val Kilmer fans must see his great performance. I'd recommend to at least rent if not by this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Portrayal of a Serious Social Problem.......1999-05-31

Val Kilmer gave 110% in his portrayal of the horrors faced by those sentenced to the old Southern chain gangs. Unfortunately, with the emphasis on making criminals pay for their crimes, the film may generate less sympathy than it once did.

this is a SUPER sick movie but i didnt think it was that bad, i actally got scared from it and well its been a while since a movie did that to me. i wouldnt let my little brother watch it or anything, but its a good movie, different.

1 out of 5 stars Geez...............2006-02-26

Thank goodness I bought this movie cheap!!! Saying it is one hell of a great horror movie, I was anxious to see it. Boy, did that soon change. This movie is stupid, stupid, stupid!!!!!! Even the gore in this movie does not make it deserve more than one star in my book. Horrible acting, poor writing and cheap filming! Rob Zombie can do better than this...... I hope! Don't waste your money!!!

1 out of 5 stars Long, drawn-out, and boring.......2006-02-07

What a waste of film. I didn't expect much and I was disappointed. The movie was so long and the whole time I was stuck waiting for a reason that the production company paid money to put this on dvd... still wondering. The only highlights were Baby being SO fine and Captain Spaulding having a great personality (he was only in about five minutes of the movie though). Finally, I came to the conclusion that Rob Zombie made this film as a joke so that when people saw it and said that he had no business in Hollywood, he could surprise them with a better film on his next try... then I saw the Devil's Rejects and I'm just left scratching my head. What were any of these people thinking?

1 out of 5 stars AHHHHHHHHH!.......2006-01-02

It's sick! It's twisted! It's House of 1,000 Corpses, and it's more fun than a wholesome bowl of "Agatha Crispies"! Dropped by two studios (Universal and MGM) and doomed to obscurity until Lions Gate Films gave it a limited theatrical release, Rob Zombie's gonzo horror flick is a blood-spattered throwback to the gore-fests of the '70s, lending new meaning to the term "box-office gross." Most critics misunderstood this unbridled exercise in graphic style and violence, but for devoted horror buffs it's a refreshing rebuttal to the comparatively "polite" frights of the post-Scream era. While paying homage to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Last House on the Left, Motel Hell, and other gory classics, Zombie's ramshackle plot (two young couples are terrorized by an inbred family of homicidal maniacs) lacks a crucial sense of dread, but his pastiche of vivid colors, grainy fetish-films, and photo-negative imagery is guaranteed to hold your attention. A bona-fide cult item, this House is definitely worth a visit... if you dare. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Not scary but it's good, campy fun........2007-06-25

This movie is about a group of young people whose car breaks down and they seek help from a group of people who turn out to be a bunch of black magic-practicing murderous rednecks. Sounds familiar? Yeah, it's that cliche plotline made popular by films such as "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". However, Zombie wasn't trying to make a film that was purely unique. It was meant to be a homage to the films he loved and as such the movie is a nice accomplishment. Knowing that he could not match the scares of those classic films, he went for all-out campiness. For this reason, I wouldn't call the film scary, but it sure is fun to watch. The closest comparison that I can think of is "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2", another underrated film.

Some elements are confusing and don't seem to have much to do with the plotline. Seriously, whatever theories are running about, does anyone truly understand how the old African-American man fits into the story? It doesn't matter though. The plot is pretty much secondary anyway. All of these things add to the atmosphere and the fun. You can say the movie is style over substance, but does it ever have style.

Two more comments. For one, I LOVE the opening scene. Maybe it's a sign that I'm a disturbed individual, but that scene cracked me up. He may be a villian, but I love the clown. The scene had a nice mix of humor and gore. I guess those two things can mix. Is that combination a bad influence? Hmmmm...maaaybe.

The other comment: Ring the bell on the menu screen but don't choose an option immediately. The clown pops up and makes a bunch of funny statements about how you won't pick an option or say anything.
(paraphrased) "I take it y'all must be mutes 'cause I know you wouldn't be ****ing with me, now would you? No siree, the last person to **** with me ain't having a real howdy-doody day right now."
(looking at a porn mag) "Oooh-eee, all that and flexible too!"
It has to be said in character for you to see the humor.

5 out of 5 stars rock on rob.......2007-05-17

this is a gem for any horror lover i love the story and that it was set in the 70s

3 out of 5 stars A different type of scary........2007-05-02

I decided to watch this because one of my favorite actresses (Erin Daniels) is in it. Thankfully, I rented it instead of buying it.

I'd put this movie into the same group of scary movies as the Michael Myers movies, the original "The Hills Have Eyes" and, in general, most "older" scary movies in the sense that they are all labeled as horror movies but aren't all that scary. However, this movie is different from other scary movies because it's more creepy and disturbing than scary. There's killing, yes, but the killing is more torturous and humiliating and cult-like than Jason or Myers-type killings. Zombie throws in weird, random shots of naked women and clowns and such. The ending is predictable and the family in the movie is a typical scary movie family but to say that this movie is a typical scary movie is completely false. It's weird. It's creepy. It has bunny costumes. It has people buried alive. It has innocent-looking, evil chicks. It's disturbing. It's different. It's worth a watch.

If you're into scary movies, I'd suggest you watch this just because it's a "different" kind of scary movie. If you generally don't like scary movies, go ahead and skip it. If I could, I would've given this movie 2 1/2 stars instead of 3.

      5 out of 5 stars Well-accomplished........2007-04-19

This movie is a weird, very different viewing experience, just like it's meant to be. I don't think anyone can really criticise a movie as self-conscious as this one. It's bad, it's tacky, it's over-the-top horrible so that it almost seems funny, but that's the whole point. It's deliberate exploitation film based on a long history of bad yet strangely fascinating movies.

The intention, it seems, is to create in the viewer something that approaches a sense of delight at how absurd the horror genre can be, though still confusedly mixed with repulsion. This sense of repulsion is something that the viewer is never completely successful at repressing, despite their attempts to find the film purely funny. To seek this sort of combination of feelings is the reason many people still watch tasteless old horror movies, and laugh at them, perhaps subconsciously attempting to conquer their own fears of the possibility of intense pain and terror by turning it into humour. This film deliberately tries to create and play off of that sort of reaction. It emphasises both the humour and the repulsion factors more strongly than the older films it's based on, where this combination was unintentional. Other films have tried this to a certain extent, but with too much emphasis on humour and not enough genuine gruesomeness, making these films merely campy and not nearly so rich in contradictory sentiment as House of 1,000 Corpses.

So if you aren't into that sort of thing you probably can't appreciate where this is coming from, or why anyone would like it. But you're also not the intended audience, so your opinion doesn't count! For what it is, it's a very unique film that does something quite new, and it's surprisingly sucessful.

And personally I think the fish sculpture alone makes the whole movie worthwhile, that scene definitely made my life just a little better.

5 out of 5 stars 1 of the best horror films ever! .......2007-04-17

This is 1 of the best horror films ive ever seen. The plot is twisted. Two couples get lost while searching for the infamous Dr. Satan. ALong the way they encounter several horrors that include a bizare group of psycotics. If ur a horror fan like i am, this is essential for ur collection. But if u dont like blood, gore, and vulgar language this is not for u.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating glimpse of Russia!!!.......2001-12-27

This is a wonderful video and well worth paying the low price. The 2-tape set is short at only 30 minutes per video, but within this tight time frame we are given a quick but very interesting tour of some of the best of Russia. Beautiful churches and cathedrals, cities of Moscow and St Petersburg, and smaller towns along the Volga river. The narration is very good and easy on the ear. A great addition to the collection of those new to Russia and those with a longer interest in the country. It makes me want to visit right away!
