To call The Judi Dench Collection a treasure trove is indubitably cliché, but that's so much classier than "Dench-a-Palooza." Essential for fans of the great Dame, theatre buffs, and drama students, this eight-disc set is an embarrassment of riches, with nine BBC productions of classic and original plays, plus three radio plays and excerpts from televised interviews, one of which features her moving rendition of "Send in the Clowns" from A Little Night Music, for which she won an Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical (is there nothing she can't do?). They etch an indelible portrait of an artist with a compelling presence and staggering range. Judi Dench is one of those actors who rarely seem to make a false move, handling wrenching drama, madcap farce, and witty comedy with equal aplomb. John Hopkins' Talking to a Stranger (1966) is a British television benchmark that is mentioned in the same breath as Dennis Potter's masterpieces. Dench won her first BAFTA (the British equivalent of the Oscar) for her role as a damaged sibling in a dysfunctional family. Dench stars as Anya in Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard, a 1962 production translated by, and starring, John Gielgud and, as Madame Ranesvky, Peggy Ashcroft. Ashcroft is a hard act to follow, but Dench pulls it off in a 1981 production in which she assumes the role of the irresponsible aristocrat.

Georges Feydeau's Keep an Eye on Amelie (1973) is a carefree hour in which Dench stars as a coquette who agrees to marry a confirmed bachelor (Patrick Cargill) so he can inherit a million francs. This production is paired on disc 4 with writer Michael Frayn's (Noises Off!) award-winning comedy Make and Break, which unfolds at a trade fair in Frankfort and stars Dench as a devoted secretary to a work-consumed boss. Two powerful dramas comprise disc 8, Going Gently, for which Dench earned another BAFTA as a hospice nurse to two adversarial patients, and Can You Hear Me Thinking?(1990), starring Dench and her late husband Michael Williams (A Fine Romance) as parents whose lives are shattered when their teenage son develops schizophrenia. Ibsen's still potent Ghosts (1981) boasts a stellar ensemble, including Kenneth Branagh as doomed son Oswald and Michael Gambon as Pastor Manders, with Dench as Mrs. Alving, whose respected late husband led a dark, secret life. Anything but, Absolute Hell (1991) is a lost-souls black comedy starring Dench as Christine, the proprietor of a bohemian nightclub in post-World War II London. The cast includes her future Notes on a Scandal costar, Bill Nighy, as a washed-up writer. Stardom in the States came late to Dench. Not quite what I expected.......2007-06-19

I don't need to express how much I like Judi Dench. It would be excessive, and too sickeningly precious.

Although I thought Judi Dench deserved the Oscar for "Notes on a Scandal," (and other past films) this television and radio retrospective is one I could have lived without. It has nothing that remotely comes close to the quality of Ms. Dench's film work.

As for this interminable boxed set of Ms. Dench's dalliances into television and radio, I was never so disappointed. Indeed, to be subjected to two productions of Chekhov's "Cherry Orchard" is enough to free my point of any ambiguity. Simply put, two "Cherry Orchard's" are two too many. Where's my razor blade?

"Talking to a Stranger" was rather more than I could take. Can you say, manic?

The only reason to buy this collection would be for "Make or Break" with a marvelous supporting cast including the great Robert Hardy, (The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, Elizabeth R, Edward the King, Middlemarch, Bramwell, and Harry Potter). Then there is, "Absolute Hell" with Bill Nighy, (The Lost Prince, The Pirates of the Caribbean II and III), Francesca Annis, (Cleopatra, Lillie, Edward the King, and Under the Cherry Moon) and another equally well rounded ensemble as "Make or Break." Both TV movies are wonderful.

The poetry readings are a nice touch. They are readings before an audience from several well versed poets. Each poem is read by Mr. Michael Williams and Ms. Judi Dench. Michael Williams (Elizabeth R, and Educating Rita) is Ms. Dench's late husband. He also co-starred with her in "Can You Hear Me Thinking?" in this collection. Despite the fact Williams and Dench are both in it don't expect too much viewing this 'illness-of-the-week-movie.' Its teleplay is short on facts and made with typical stiff British upper-lip for its subject matter. There is one exception. Michael Williams plays his role of father with greater depth of character then Judi Dench does playing mother. It remains to mention, Michael Williams played a minor role in the film "Tea with Mussolini." Sadly, the husband-wife team of the smash-hit sitcom, "A Fine Romance" (1981-1984) had no extensive scenes together in the film. Mr. Williams (a gifted actor by reason of his own ability) died of lung cancer shortly after his final TV film "The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns" on January 11, 2001 at Hampstead, London, England.

Judi Dench's portrayal of an actress in the radio play, "Amy's View," is that of another abhorrent virago to utterly despise. If one likes that sort of thing - or simply worships everything Dench - one can engage in uproarious Bacchanalian festivities. Perhaps that was the point. However, an actress playing an actress behind the scenes is rather a bore these days. Dench plays at being a selfish, temperamental, helpless character always in need. She's never happy with what shes got - no, not even with her own daughter. Yet, she's perfectly content living with a swindler - or so she tries to convince herself. Her character exists in a world of her own making and without any redeeming qualities. Compassion, love, and forgiveness do not exist in her narrow view of life off stage. Hence, the feeling that accompanies an experience of a thespian being indulgent exists in large quantities as one listens.

There is also a ghastly aggrandized installment called, "Ghosts" by Ibsen, starring Natasha Richardson (Patty Hearst, and Widows Peak) and the brilliant Kenneth Branagh (Chariots of Fire [uncredited], Henry V, Dead Again, Peter's Friends, Much Ado about Nothing, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Othello, The Proposition, William Shakespeare's Hamlet, The Theory of Flight, Conspiracy, and Shackleton). Unfortunately, "Ghosts" is a production cooked too long and anything but edible! It is a presentation to the mind in the form of an idea or image of life, which is, in fact, less than anything based in reality. Allow it to be stated, though, it is understood one person's idea of art (whatever the exact definition of art might be these days) can be another person's Grimm's fairytale!

The early interviews with Ms. Dench are charming. Yet, one might wonder about her later interviews before sinking their hard earned pennies into this collection. After all, not all of us live the life of a 'Superstar.' I shall say but this - they are a bit pretentious. One fellow 'board-walker' (acting as interviewer) is befitting those inclined to social exclusiveness, who rebuffs criticism of those considered inferior. His posturing is similar to W.S. Maugham's character 'Mr. Warburton' in Maugham's short story "The Outstation." That interview alone caused me to reevaluate how I view Ms. Dench (the actor) from such a distance. Often distance opens the mind to clarify the difference between falsity and truthfulness. Although I admit I like Ms. Dench's work I do not think I'd care to know her or meet her on the street. No star can sum up the life of anyone on a chance encounter. I've met, worked with (and been around) enough of them to know - ma'am.

Nonetheless, yes Ms. Dench, we know too well how difficult it is to do the work you do. Believe me 'Joe Public' (as you call us) really does understand. Work is work for all of us!

Ms. Dench singing "Send in the Clowns" was brilliant - the TV host sycophantic. At this price, two TV movies, a poetry reading, a song (and a partridge in a pear tree!) from the entire lot, aren't worth it for this Judi Dench fan falling out with the celebrated Dench charm.

With the lack of more recent readings for the BBC such as "Pangbourne," this box set is more like "mother's little helper," - about 40 milligrams forced for several days!

Who knows, I may watch again one snowy night and change my mind - but I doubt it - it doesn't snow where I live!

I don't expect too many positive ratings for this review either. Don't bother please.

Now I feel as if I got my money back - oh how delicious!

Fantastic collection of rare Judi Dench films. Keep THE GHOSTS, THE CHERRY ORCHARD (1981) and KEEP AN EYE ON AMELIE. J. Dench is remarkable, excellent dramatic actress and amazing comedienne, as well. Very interesting also the extras.

What a wonderful collection of Dame Judi's work. I am particularly enjoying the works that I've not found individually: "Talking to a Stranger", the 1962 "Cherry Orchard", and "Keep an Eye on Amelie". In each of these we see the young Judi (before the Dame) already totally entrancing us by being at once the character in each play and at the same time being herself. It must be magic.

Her take on the Madame Ranevsky role, in the 1981 version of "The Cherry Orchard", is entirely hers and absolutely perfect for this viewer. Some of her later work in this collection includes: "Absolute Hell" and "Can You Hear Me Thinking". You will also find, among the bonus features several radio plays, and three interviews with Dame Judi that give us all a closer glimpse and appreciation of the intelligence, and honesty behind the talent.

For Dench fans, this is a must!

Doris Wishman's film noir masterpiece? It's a stretch, but there's a certain grungy edge to the slapdash, shot-on-the-streets aesthetic of Bad Girls Go to Hell. This brilliant title belongs to the bizarre tale of a giddy young newlywed (Gigi Darlene) who changes her name and flees for New York after killing her building superintendent, a sleazy rapist with bad teeth. She seeks refuge with a sadistic drunk who lashes her with his belt, a predatory lesbian, and a pleasant landlady with a sex maniac husband. The feature was shot silent with sound dubbed in, and the odd, alienating quality actually makes her torrid ordeal more nightmarish, and it's got a doozy of an ending. Another Day, Another Man, the story of another newlywed who becomes a hooker to pay for her husband's sudden medical bills, is less lurid but has moments of sheer weirdness. Her pimp dreams of seducing twins and a fresh-faced farm girl into his fold ("My day at the bus terminal had really paid off!"), and the film climaxes with a strange, shocking ending. Known in the trade as "roughies," these films lean to the violent side of Wishman but are more suggestive than literal (especially when she forgets to dub in the sound effects) and feature very little actual nudity. There is, however, plenty of lounging around in underwear and even some headstands. The prints are in nice condition and the DVD also features trailers, stills, and ad art for Doris Wishman films, and kitschy drive-in intermission shorts. --Sean Axmaker

A demented drive-in double feature from director Doris Wishman! Gigi Darlene learns that Bad Girls Go to Hell (1965, 64 min.) when she's attacked by a janitor with bad teeth, accidentally kills the guy, then flees to New York--where her troubles really begin! With its crazed plot, rampant nudity, and predatory sex maniacs, "Bad Girls Go to Hell" is one of director Wishman's wildest "roughies" which, amazingly, was theatrically re-released in 1998! In the second feature, Another Day, Another Man (1966, 70 min.), Ann, a "Miss Prim" with a giant hairdo, doesn't approve of her friend Tess' occupation as a prostitute, nor of Tess' employer, Bert the pimp. But when Ann's husband suddenly gets a mysterious illness, she has to find some way to pay the bills and, yup, quickly becomes one of Bert's girls. With a hilariously tragic ending and Wishman's trademark camerawork that seems to be constantly distracted by inanimate objects, Another Day, Another Man also stars Gigi Darlene as a hooker whose hayseed boyfriend gets manhandled by sexy twins Rita and Darlene Bennett. Two lunatic masterpieces from the woman who gave the world "Deadly Weapons" and "Double Agent 73."

Ok, if you like trashy films.......2007-03-28

If you like sleazy films with low budgets, horrible acting (the voices were added after filming), visual innuendo, tease after tease, this will do. These black and white films from 1965 and '66 ran in run-down theatres in decaying parts of town. They aren't stimulating and would barely garner a PG-13 today but their melodramatic scripts that seem to have been written in an hour and their over the top scenarios (I was especially amused by the scene where the previously very nice man who lets the down-on-her-luck woman room with him turns into a sadistic maniac who whips her with his belt just a few seconds after taking a couple of swigs of scotch) can entertain those who like things that are badly done for the wrong reasons (like this movie). All of the women are passive and never defend themselves or stick up or speak up for themselves. It is funny that people once thought this was lurid stuff and that they actually would drive out of their way to see this schlock.

Pull up an armchair and prepare yourself for a DVD double sleazefest from writer/director Doris Wishman. These two outrageous 60s sexploitation cult dramas are a campy dream. First there's "Bad Girls Go To Hell." Housewife Meg Kelton (Gigi Darlene)--naturally wearing just some black lacy underwear--meets a janitor on the stairs. He drags her off to his apartment, and attacks her. Later he threatens to tell her husband--and well ... she's forced to bludgeon him to death. Next thing you know, she's on the run in New York. But what happens to any nice innocent housewife who has no money and just a suitcase to her name? It's not long before she's picked up and exploited by every strange person in New York. Abused and misused, she spins from apartment to apartment in this tawdry tacky fall from housewifely bliss.

In the second feature "Another Day, Another Man" Ann (Barbi Kemp) moves into an apartment with her hubbie Steve (Tony Gregory). After eating her spaghetti and meatballs, he falls mysteriously ill and is bedridden for months. Since Steve is the breadwinner, it doesn't take long before poor Ann is off "entertaining" men and raking in $200 a week. She's aided and abetted in her fall from grace by Meg (Gigi Darlene) and Bert (Sam Stewart).

The moral to both stories is essentially the same--outside of that nice little housewife role, the world is a dangerous, sick place, and director/writer Doris Wishman is right there to show us just how sick and depraved the world can be. Wishman's eccentric style adds to the fun here. In one scene for example, two girls start yawning and declare it's time to go to bed. Normally the girls would exit to their respective bedrooms--not so in a Wishman film. The two girls strip slowly in the living room. Just as you think this scene is an excuse to see women in their underwear (and you could be right), the camera shoots off of the lingerie, and settles on something else ... a plant ... an ashtray ... the furniture. At other times, the camera spins around cleavage, diving in and out for frantic close-ups. For some scenes, Wishman films feet with disembodied voices. There's a lot of grunting and groaning, but naughty doings are implied rather than actually filmed. One thing you can count here on is women with big beehive hairstyles, fake eyelashes, lace body suits, those big 60s knickers and push up bras. While the acting is equally appalling in both films "Another Day, Another Man" is my favourite. Perhaps it was the nasty hair pulling girl fight. Or perhaps it's the naughty twins clad in black see-through peignoirs falling on Meg's "hayseed" boyfriend as he struggles to crawl out of their apartment.

This DVD from Something Weird video is a bargain price for anyone who wants to wallow in a Wishman festival--it's loaded. Apart from the two "roughies", there's the standard Something Weird intro (and this has to be seen to be believed), "Let's Go to the Drive-In!" (over 3 hours long), trailers for other Wishman films, an adult book pitch, and last but not least a Doris Wishman Gallery of Exploitation Art. If you want a good intro to the Works of Doris Wishman, this DVD (from the middle of her career) is a good place to start. You'll either love it or hate it, but don't say I didn't warn you--displacedhuman

A pair of Roughies from the Doris Wishman oeuvre.......2005-08-03

Doris Wishman (1912-2002) stands out in the history of sexploitation films because she had the distinction of being a successful woman director in a genre dominated by men. Wishman started making films set at nudist camps and probably enjoyed her most success making "nudie cuties" such as "Nudes on the Moon." But the two Wishman films on this Something Weird Video double-feature represent prime examples of the "Roughies" that defined the middle of her film career before she moved on to the "Ghoulies" (e.g., "A Night to Dismember") and soft core (e.g., "Double Agent 73"). This is a SWV "Special Edition" DVD, which means that in terms of the extras you are talking wall-to-wall Doris Wishman. Plus, if you just hit play when you get to the main menu you are treated to a complete Drive-In Theater experience.

"Bad Girls Go To Hell" (1965) is the story of Meg Kelton (Gigi Darlene), whose husband Ted (Alan Yorke) goes off to work one day. Meg is then sexually assaulted by the owner of the building, who warns her not to let her husband know what has happened. When Ted goes off to work again, the sleaze ball leaves Meg a message to come visit him or else her husband will find out what has happened (I guess Meg believes Ted will think it was her fault she was raped). Meg tries to buy off the guy, but when he attacks her again she kills him. Fleeing Boston for New York City, Meg now says she is Ellen Green from Chicago. What happens next is that she ends up in a series of encounters with people who are apparently trying to help her, but who get her into just more sleazy encounters. Then we get something of a "Twilight Zone" twist at the end.

"Another Day, Another Man" (1966) starts with Ann (Barbi Kemp) getting married and moving out of the apartment she shares with Tess (Mary O'Hara), who happens to be a prostitute. Ann is happy for a while, but then hubby falls sick and since she cannot go back to her old job (her boss does not want married women in the office) she turns to hooking instead for Tess's pimp, Bert (Sam Stewart), who provides a film noir voice over when he explains how he put together his stable of prostitutes (including twins). Her husband does not really understand why she has to go out to work for a few hours at night in different places each night but he eventually sees the light and that is not a good thing.

Wishman certainly has a distinctive visual style and since she does all of her sound back in the studio there is sense of dislocation because characters have conversations without their lips moving. However, what makes these two films stand out from most of Wishman's other work is that there is relatively little nudity, consisting mostly of bare backsides. Otherwise you are talking about women who buy bras a couple of sizes too small and men who would rather slap a woman while taking what they want rather than providing even a pretense of affection. Wishman's camera never fully shows what is going on, not just because that would bring on ratings concerns, but also because showing everything would be tantamount to endorsing it, and that is not her goal. If there is a common moral to the two films, which were made consecutively, it would be that once a woman falls, she falls hard and she falls often. Even when Meg/Ellen finds someone to be safe with, it turns out to be another woman, and it is the story as much as any idea of character motivation that leads her to leave and move on to the next act of degradation. The question then becomes what Meg and Ann could have done to avoid their fates, or are they simply doomed because they are women a.k.a. the weaker sex?

Can we put these films in some larger sociological context, specifically the argument that the Roughies are a reaction to the sexual politics of the 1960s the way the nudist camp films were a response to the relative complacency of the Eisenhower years? Sure. But then the undercurrent of violence towards women goes back cinematically to the entire film noir genre where a tough guy is as likely to shoot a dame or at least belt her around as kiss her. For most people these are not erotic films, but depressing tales of a sexual dynamic that belongs back in the Stone Age and not in the great metropolitan area of New York City when the Sexual Revolution was in full swing.

One of the strengths of the Something Weird Video series is that when they focus on an auteur, they go the whole way. All of the trailers are for Doris Wishman films: "Bad Girls Go to Hell," "Indecent Desires," "A Taste of Flesh," "Another Day, Another Man" (which is where we get the theme music for Something Weird Video), "My Brothers Wife," "Too Much, Too Often," and "The Amazing Transplant." There is also a Book Pitch for "Man and Male" and "Woman and Female," a set of books you can get by turning on the parking lights of your car. Besides the Book Pitch and the trio of Intermission Countdowns, there is a Doris Wishman Gallery of Exploitation Art,which covers all phases of her career. You even get some exit bits to complete your drive-in experience ("Please Replace Speaker When You Leave...If Torn From the Stand, Please Leave in Box at Exit").

Young women, weirdo creeps, and 60's New York... what a package!.......2005-07-14

Amazon's description, and the accompanying customer reviews, pretty much hit the mark: Both "Bad Girls Go To Hell" and "Another Day, Another Man" sport amateurish production values, frequent lapses in visual and thematic coherence, and a strange fascination with inanimate objects such as potted plants and third-rate framed artwork. Yet, as most of the comments here also point out, there is also an undeniable power and attraction at work here, a kind of compelling, dreamlike quality that keeps one's attention. Of course, the numerous women lounging around in lingerie and body stockings in both films might have something to do with the movies' hold over viewers. Both movies feature surprisingly clean, sharp prints, and like most other Something Weird releases, this DVD also has numerous bonus features including trailers, short subjects, and promotional artwork.

Hi everybody! I really trashed this movie when I first viewed and reviewed it. After leaving it on the shelf for over a year I decided to try again and I admit that I may have been a little too harsh in my criticism the first time. I'm still disappointed that it failed to live up to the hype but this movie DVD does have some redeeming qualities, especially if you start it at the beginning and watch it all the way through as if you were at a drive in theater. I didn't do that the first time, I just watched the two featured movies and skipped the "extras". The trailers from other Doris Wishman movies were very good and I plan to buy some of them when they finally come out on DVD. Now that I've seen Gigi Darlene and Darlene Bennett in the "Olga" movies and other movies I can better appreciate them in these movies. I decided to write a second review rather than "edit" my previous one so that you can still use it. Good luck and thanks!

"Latin Boys Go to Hell" may not be a movie for everyone but it is an interesting and quite good independent film. It deals with many issues--homosexuality, religion, body culture, and ethnicity and it also touches the Fiesta Fatal (Festival of the Dead), psychoses and parodies the Spanish novella as well. It is a very ambitious movie.
Justin, a gay teenager, is the main character and what happens in his life is our story. Angel, a cousin, arrives from Chicago and Justin realizes that he is in love with him. However, Angel falls for another guy, Andrea who just happens to be the friend of a gay man who is very possessive. As everything goes out of control, drama sets in.
The movie has no pretense--it doesn't pretend to be a great movie, it is aware that it is a very thin movie with a very fragile script. The characters are trashy but the dialog is very funny and the actors are all good looking. It is a movie that requires no thought--all it s trying to do is to provide a good time. In that, it succeeds very well.
Reminiscent of the early movies of Almodovar and John Waters, it requires a degree of wit and culture to be understood. Much of the humor is subliminal and the sex portrayed is very campy.
From the title, you can expect a campy film or a sexy movie, it is neither, It has camp and it has sex but that is not what defines it. It is not serious drama either. The plot is predictable--what happens to a gay guy who pursues a straight guy. This is a plotline that has been done to death. There is little nudity and the sex is very vanilla. For a film about gay Latinos, this is very, very tame. It just seems to be that if a gay guy is going to lust after a straight guy, the object of that lust should be a knockout. The straight is not only plain in the movie, he is downright ugly.
The movie rests somewhere between a coming of age drama and a spoof of sexploitation films. There is violence in the film with images of castration and the plot is very soap-operatic.
But it is fun and we need fun movies once in a while.

The acting is horrible, the movie is stupid, and the cinematography looks cheap!!! This is what happens when you buy a DVD just cause the guy on the cover is hot. Avoid this junk at all costs. I would give it zero stars if I could. Absolute TRASH!!!!

amateur, and the cast isn't that good-looking; but I got sucked in by the title and front cover anyway. Sorry I bought it. Would rather a sweet, gay romance than the violence and craziness of this flix.

what can I say?............2003-06-09

For whatever reason, I didn't expect much from this movie.. but I got sucked in anyway.. It's a little campy and over the top at times, but suspenseful and gripping as well.. Kind of like those Telenovelas (Latin American soap operas) that are all over this film (maybe not quite as over the top, but if you watch, you can see the parallel)...That's another thing.. I love the symbolism they use...which is so bold, I can't help but love the drama of it all.... That and the attractive cast certainly doesn't hurt either....

It's not a provocative, challenging film by any means (who says it has to be anyway?), but it's a very entertaining, dare I say tantalizing gay indie film....I guess I'm a sucker for this sort of thing....

Not the best acting or photography, but a very gritty look at Latino [homosexual]culture. Some humor, but mostly a soap-opera view of love, Latino culture, the influence of the church, and sexual identity through the eyes of two characters.

If you have fond memories of..........2004-04-27

...Saturday afternoon movies on your local UHF station, you should check this out.

I get a feeling from watching this film that it's makers truly love the "less respected" genres of film, like sci-fi, horror, 70's explotation etc. They seamlessly blend all these different styles into one hilarious, fast paced story.

They do make fun of their conventions a bit, but don't disrespect them. I'm not quite sure how they were able to figure out how to do all this, but they did.

There are also some outstanding comic preformances by Chaz Truog as Polo McCrimmon and Rich Kronfeld (Wally Hotvedt of Comedy Central's "Let's Bowl") as conspiracy theorist Kurt Camp.

By the way, for those of you who think the whole conspiracy thing has been overdone recently...you ain't seen nothin' yet. The conspiracy angle of the film is very, very funny.

And I thought all indie films had to be boring and take place in coffee shops. Who-da thunk it?

Cheese from the Netherworld.......2003-10-20

Rock and Roll Ray stars as Dario Dare, sleazy reporter and former wrestling promoter, on the outs with both his girlfriend and his editor Art Cannon (John Regan) at the National Explainer. Given another chance, he's assigned to get the lowdown on miracles performed by Catholic cardinal GianCarlo Ponti (Jim Jorgensen). As Ponti is due to arrive at his next US tour stop in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Dare checks in to a local bed & breakfast. Meanwhile, Vatican secret agent/rock singer Cat Powers (Jessica Michals) delivers mission briefing to fellow agent and Ponti's bodyguard Marion Tango (Renee Werbowski). Scottish innkeeper Angus "Polo" McKrimmon (Chaz Truog) leads Dare to a spot where sword-wielding demons manifest. Subsequently, the demons manage to capture our heroes and take them to the 23rd level of Hell.

Bob Beezly (Carl Besasie), Ruler of Hell, is pissed because Ponti has gone back on their deal, and wants Dare to assassinate the cardinal - using a special soul-catching gun - in exchange for his hostage soul. The assassination is a success, leading to a flurry of conspiracy theories (in which Joey Ramone becomes a prime suspect). Dare doesn't get his soul back though, and is left demonized, until he seeks help from his film star twin brother "A-Man" (Ray again), who has some knowledge of witchcraft. A-Man exorcises his demon half and succeeds in sending Dario and Tango back to Hell to get his soul back and rescue the others.

Go To Hell possesses a pleasant comic ambience and, though many of the gags fall flat, there are enough of them that some manage to hit the target. For a production at this budget level, the production values are adequate, and technical and musical elements are all of professional quality. Even the special effects - including some relatively simple CGI - are well designed to hide their cheapness,or played for comic effect.

The leads are all pretty good in their roles, considering the circumstances. This is one extremely silly movie, recalling Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, only much more inventive and enjoyable.

This light-hearted spoof of Latino culture, soaps and coming-out movies is by turns sentimental and wickedly funny.

When young Justin Vega falls in love with his straight cousin Angel, all sorts of drama occurs...much like the sudsy telenovela that every gay Hispanic boy in the film can't stop watching. Sex, love, tears, revenge and murder are the order of the day...watch for a shocking, uh, emasculation near the end.

Edgy and daring, this film is dampened only by budget constraints.

New Actress Shines.......2000-05-26

This intriguing plot peppered with startling visuals offers an excellent vehicle to showcase the marvelous young talent of Jenifer Lee Simard (aka Jenifer Jaisey). Simard's breathtaking beauty and a healthy dose of humor make this gay-oriented film accessible to heterosexuals. As Andrea, love interest to one and personal confident to another main character, Simard draws the film together into a credible love-pentagram that crosses all the lines. Expect more from this fantastic new talent, including the forthcoming American Bohemian.

Ted has a way of making things simple in this book. It does so much more than explain how to make it hard for people to go to hell from our city. It helps establish a biblical worldview and really tests your motives. Very humbling. I would recommend it to those in leadership as well as the congregation.

Practical spiritual insight........2002-07-29

This is a light read, and easy to understand. The book is set in three sections addressing different aspects of Haggard's plan to " Make it hard for people in your city to go to hell".

Section one is a brief, but interesting look at the work the author has done in Colorado Springs, Co. There is some detail as to the actual church planting up through the growth and health of the New Life church. Some specific and difficult spiritual confrontations are listed here and throughout the book.

Section two contains practical advice on how to implement biblical priciples into reaching the lost of your city and region. This section offers a practical guide to building a relationship with other christian leaders in your area.

The third section gets up close and personal. It was by far the best part of the book. It will cause you to consider your approach to reaching the lost and your personal walk with the Lord. This portion of the book was invasive and will give you opportunity to do some self evaluation. This teaching is important for all of us interested in approaching the Lord's work in the harvest.

We've seen some of these principles working in our town and believe they can work everywhere.

ONE OF THE "ROUGHIES" OF THE EXPLOITATION ERA.......2001-08-18

Where in the heck is Joe Bob Briggs? He was the mainstay of cult TV first on Fridays and then late night Saturdays. He brought us the best of the worst of the B flicks and a running trailer park commentary that would rival anything the original SNL writers threw at us. I miss him. Joe Bob hosted a series of these sixties cheapies which were a genre unto their own. Wild women in fishnet body suits being chased by brutes in polka-dot boxer shorts were the basic plots. In this gem, we follow the misadventures of a penniless and brainless chick lost in the Big Apple. Directed by Doris Wishman who brought Chesty Morgan to the screen (check out the kid in his bedroom in "Serial Mom") and used many aliases in her work. Rated 336 of "The Sleaziest Movies In The History Of The World." If you are a fan of this genre, you will howl with delight. If your fave film is "The English Patient", you may now move freely about the cabin.
