The compelling Coyote Waits is based on one of the Leaphorn and Chee mystery novels by Tony Hillerman (all three have been adapted for television), concerning a partnership, of sorts, between an experienced Navajo detective, Joe Leaphorn (Wes Studi), and a young reservation cop, Jim Chee (Adam Beach). When the latter's colleague and friend ends up shot to death and left to burn in a fiery car, Chee takes time off to evaluate whether he should become a healer instead of a lawman. Either way, he can't proceed without getting to the bottom of the killing and proving or disproving his own original assumption that the murderer is a shaman he found drunk and in possession of a gun near the crime. Working the case from a different angle is Leaphorn, who finds a link between the shaman and a missing university professor on the trail of a major historical find. Beach and Studi are terrific, though the story doesn't bring them together, in the same space, very often. (The two characters do most of their communicating by phone.) Familiar faces in the supporting cast include Gary Farmer (Dead Man), Keith Carradine (Deadwood), and Graham Greene (Dances with Wolves). Sheila Tousey is outstanding in her recurring role as Emma Leaphorn, Joe's wise, no-nonsense wife. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Good movie and price.......2007-06-22

This is a good movie with Studi and Beach turning in solid performances again in this sequel to "Skinwalkers". If you enjoy detective stories, you should find this one entertaining. Fans of the first movie or those that enjoy movies like "Thunderheart" should like it. This Amazon price is a good since these Hillerman DVD movies are not easy to find unless you go to [...]. However; there they are overpriced since by the time you pay for shipping and tax you end up spending about $[...]. So get your Hillerman DVDs here or at Deepdiscount.com.

4 out of 5 stars Coyote Waits.......2007-04-01

An excellent film and a must for any Tony Hillerman fan. I loved the production, the wonderful New Mexican scenery, and seeing a bit more of the modern Navajo way.

1 out of 5 stars horrible movie.......2007-01-01

fell asleep twice trying to get through this movie. I kept hoping it would finally get interesting but it never did.

As reviewer: B. Chandler "xyzzy" (Arlington, Texas)said,"Jim Chee sits drinking coffee while partner Tribal Policeman Delbert Nez meets his demise. Chee catches the obvious perpetrator. A Navaho shaman, with a bottle in one hand and THE gun in his belt. Case closed."

The Tony Hillerman books are good stories - read them and skip these god awful movies.

I should have rented first instead of wasting money buying. There were so many good actors in this movie I thought it would be okay but even they couldn't get past the stinky script writing.

I also thought Adam Beach was terrible in this movie. Unemotional, sounded like he was unsure of his lines, fresh from his first acting class?

Wes Studi and Graham Greene were great, as usual. Wes wore some pretty spiffy threads in a lot of his scenes so that helped make up for suffering through such an awful film. Although there was a scene where Wes wore sunglasses when no one else was wearing them so it looked awkward. See how boring the movie was? I made it through the movie by napping, checking out their outfits, watching body language, and looking over the sets and scenes.

The blond TA character was also awful. Jeeze, what a friggin sterotype - yet another dumb blond TA doing her professor. EEEch. Then trying to come on to Adam Beach's character. Eyes rolling....

Get a lot of foam bricks if you are determined to watch this awful movie.

1 out of 5 stars Typical Hollywood mangling.......2006-01-31

Typical Hollywood mangling of a good book. Read the book instead. But the book is tougher on the reader than some earlier Hillerman books.

4 out of 5 stars Overall, a Satisfying Hillerman Adaptation.......2003-12-18

"Coyote Waits", brought to the small screen by the same team that produced the lamentable "Skinwalkers", is a satisfying experience for Tony Hillerman fans, for fans of movie mysteries in general, and for folks interested in the portrayal of Native Americans, in this case the Navajo (Dine'). It would appear that the writers listened to the complaints about "Skinwalkers" and came up with a story that adheres much more closely to Hillerman's plot and to the author's portrayal of his main characters, particularly Jim Chee (played by Adam Beach) and Joe Leaphorn (Wes Studi). Like any novel adapted into a two-hour movie, there are conflations of characters and substantial trimmings in the narrative. Nonetheless, the major plotlines in the book are dealt with here in a generally satisfactory way, although the climax was a bit too pat based on the information that the viewer was given during the course of the investigation into the death of Officer Delbert Nez. The principal character change in the film involves the substitution of Leaphorn's wife Emma(who died in the earlier book) for Professor Borbonnette, a change that is not particularly jarring in this context. Kept intact from the book is the relationship between the traditionalist Chee (studying to be a haatali, or medicine man) and the rationalist Leaphorn (firmly in touch with his own Dine' culture, but deeply skeptical of some of its beliefs). All in all, the treatment accorded to "Coyote Waits" bodes well for future productions in the series. Hopefully, "Thief of Time" will be next.

3 out of 5 stars Has its moments, but they're too few and far between.......2007-05-21

Shriek if You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th has its moments, but by and large this spoofalicious film is exceedingly average in terms of the laughs it manages to induce. Still, you have to appreciate the effort that went into it, as SIYKWIDLFT sinks its parody hooks into a vast number of genres: teen slashers, teen comedies, teen TV dramas, Baywatch, TV commercials, and more. If you go to IMDB, you'll find a listing of movies referenced here - although even this long list cannot possibly be complete. Even the likes of Lassie, Grease, and Chariots of Fire aren't safe from the satirical hands of the film's writers, and you can't tell me you ever expected to see Chariots of Fire satirized in a dumb horror comedy. That's the highlight of the whole film for me.

Shriek and Scary Movie were made at basically the same time, so don't go thinking Shriek is a tired rip-off of the tired rip-off that is Scary Movie. Scary Movie just happened to be released first, relegating this film to direct-to-video limbo. These are very different films, though - even though they were both constructed around the Scream concept. Shriek isn't as raunchy, and I think it's probably also the funnier movie of the two. Here, following a parody of the famous Scream opening scene, the story settles on the shoulders of four teenaged friends who all get notes from the Killer in the same vein as the teens in I Know What You Did Last Summer, even the new kid at school, Dawson Deery. Bulimia Falls High School is quite a place, a school where Chucky roams the hallways, Rose Marie (as Mrs. Tingle) and Partridge Family matriarch Shirley Jones (as Nurse Kevorkian) mold the minds of the young, and Coolio heads the administration (as the pimped-out Administrator Formerly Known as Principal Interest). Tom Arnold shows up as Deputy Doughy Primesuspect, while Tiffani-Amber Thiessen is the empTV reporter trying to exploit the murders for her own professional gain

If you're really into parodies like this, you'll not want to let your attention drop for more than a few seconds, as there is always something going on in the background - the Killer running around unnoticed by all, the principal making all kinds of crazy announcements (including this classic description of the upcoming band fundraiser: "liquor in the front, poker in the rear"), and various references to other films and TV shows. Still, despite all this effort and several genuinely funny moments, Shriek if You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th has a lot more hits than misses. It all balances out to a pretty average comedy.

3 out of 5 stars Before the "Scary Movie" Franchise...there was this..........2006-11-29

This film pioneered the spoofing of horror movies before the "Scary Movie" franchise took over with a bigger budget and better writing.

Admittedly, this film is not as good at creating a parody of the horror film genre, but I'm not entirely sure it was trying to. It is very entertaining in it's own way, but it obviously has a smaller budget and less-than-perfect writers (I'm redundant, I know).

On the plus side, this film does make fun of a lot of things that the "Scary Movie" franchise left out, which is awesome for us fans of this style of comedy. It obviously has a different approach and film style than the more popularly known "Scary Movies". One of my favorite scenes is towards the end when they do a "pop-up video" parody on the big chase scene which inevitabley happens at the end of every horror movie. I used to love Pop-up video in the 90's, and it was so awesome to see it again!

All in all, it's a fun film for fans of scary movies, but not quite as well-made as the "Scary Movie" movies.

You pays your money etc etc

This is one of my favorite B movies. Thiessen really shows her comedic chops in this teen horror send up on teen horror send ups.

5 out of 5 stars Puts a new spin on "Let's Do Lunch".......2007-03-30

This little, independently made student movie is filled with fun, sardonic moments, hilarious spoofs and truly black comedy with no annoying moral messages. A florist in the middle of a runned down neighborhood hires an assistant to help him in his shop. The assistant finds and cultivates a plant that needs food and plant food just won't do.

I have always loved the original better than the musical because it has a more personal, small movie feel and it is a maverick, offering a story that was abit graphic for the time in a format that is equally dark and alluring. Fun, fun, fun!

Cameo Alert! Keep an eye out for a very, very young Jack Nicholson in one of his first roles as a masochist who pays a visit to the local quack dentist and gets all the pain he can handle.

See it if you can.

5 out of 5 stars Great Classic.......2006-09-02

This film stands the test of time. It is just a good story. I laughed, got some chills, and just plain appreciated the acting of a young Jack Nicholson.

Does a plant actually consume people?
Will Nicholson's character feed it to keep his own job?

Quirky.

5 out of 5 stars A cult movie!.......2005-08-07

No matter the distant opinions you may have or mutual agreements respect to this black comedy. Plenty of laughable situations, the picture is told at different levels. A meek florist shop employee has developed a very peculiar way of feeding a curious plant: he likes human flesh. Obviously that premise will allow to show the reduced list of involuntary candidates: a drunkard who suffers an accident, a sadistic dentist, a thief and finally a pros. Curiously three of these deaths are accidental but one is induced by the floristry's owner and all of them are nightly facts. Additionally we have a broad display of characters depicted with sublime cynicism as the eat flower, the low budget Mrs. who lives according a predetermined script: familiar tragedy to get discount, and a masochist who thrives the dental interventions: Jack Nicholson in his beginnings.
The film was made in just two days and remains to my mind as the most surrealist American movie until now. This movie joins to Hallelujah, the hills and the Troublemaker as the purest and genuine independent expression of the craziest humor in those decades.

4 out of 5 stars A CULT CLASSIC........2004-08-10

"Little Shop Of Horrors" is cult film without a doubt, one of the central characters is a mutated plant that subsists on blood and human flesh. This movie inspired a Broadway musical and a remake in 1986 (but that time with songs and dances). The original version is not a musical, it's a black comedy, populated with weird characters.

"Little Shop Of Horrors" was shot with a tight budget, but it doesn't matter, because if a director and his crew are creative, they can make a good movie with little money, and "Little Shop Of Horrors" is one of those movies.

The film has a very charismatic cast, all the actors play a eccentric character, but all of them are funny and their performances are essential to the success of the movie. "Little Shop Of Horrors" is cult classic, a black comedy that it's funny and eccentric at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars And all along it was a YIDDISH COMEDY!!!.......2003-12-18

As every film buff knows, this is the schlock horror movie that later became the hit Broadway musical of the same name. Like the musical, this was never intended to be a scare -- it was done tongue-in-cheek and is really a spoof .

I had heard of this movie, but did not see it until after viewing the musical. What surprised me was the amazing amount of Jewish humor in the original. Mr. Mushnik, the flower shop owner, speaks with a decidely Yiddish accent, and is constantly making puns like "Aloha -- OY!" Then there's Mrs. Shivah (her name refers to a Jewish funeral custom), who is always buying flowers for some relative who died. Never mind that traditional Jewish funerals don't use flowers -- it's a good gag. So is Seymour's hypochodriac mother, who is the exact opposite of the usual Jewish Mother -- she DOESN'T want Seymour to get married, but if he does, he should at least get a girl with a really serious disease, not this healthy Audrey he brings home. The dinner at Mom's is hilarious -- everything she serves is some sort of home remedy. Cough syrup liquers, cod liver oil soup.... kosher, but YECCCCH!!!!

All of this gets lost in the musical rewrite, which went from Yiddish theater mode to Motown. That was funny, too -- but if you are into collecting old Jewish humor, then the original "Little Shop" should definitely be on your shelf. I give it five stars, not because it's a great cinematic acomplishment (it's not!) but because I see it as a part of Jewish-American cultural history. And besides, it's funny!

this movie is one that lives up to its a word and is extremely gorey, screwed up, and merciless. i dont remeber his name but the main character makes the story and movie so much more convicncing. the story is pretty good as for gore there not to much but theres a lot! the scnes are horrile theres rape, cannabalism, killing, murdering and other awful things your'll have to see for yourself

4 out of 5 stars Hey! Thats not what chopsticks are used for !!.......2007-01-29

Remember those horror movies when the camera pulls away?
You know what I'm talikng about.
Right when the knife's about to fall;
and the camera decides now is the appopriate time to look over at the tile pattern on the bathroom wall.
Remember how cheated you felt?
Well this is the first movie I've personally seen that had me thankful for that squeamish camera.
Not every scene mind you,
Just the ones concerning chopstick rape, and child murder.
In those scenes you don't need to see the violence,
'cause you feel it in your stomach.
There was however an attempted suicide scene shown in full detail;
where our antagonist drags his wrists back & forth
across the jagged edge of a rusted basin.
And when that doesn't seem to cut it,
he decides to tear them open with his teeth.

The story concerns "The Eight Immortals" Chinese Restaurant and its current owner, (Who just so happens to have to killed the previous owner, and his entire family.)(kids too)
Investigating the case is the most slapstick group of cops this side of "Police Academy"
And when "they" start getting close he starts killing off his staff and grinding them into pork buns.

As good as it is;
the tension in this movie is undermined by its humor.
Every scene with the owner, makes your skin crawl,
however every scene with the detectives tickles your funny bone,
So what you ultimately wind up with is a disjointed feeling,
like you're watching two different movies at once.
It either should have been a comedy or a horror movie, not both.
If the director seriously wanted it to be both,
it should have been seamlessly blended as one.
When this movie tries to make you laugh,
it comes across as feeling kinda cheap
But when it aims to make you cringe,
boy will you be cringing.
Like I said,
there'll be scenes, when you're gonna be thankful the camera bailed out.
And when it doesn't.....
You're gonna wish it was showing you
the pretty tile patterns on the bathroom wall.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Don't Order the Pork Buns !!!

5 out of 5 stars It's Untold for a Reason.......2007-01-20

This is one of those true stories that most people wish were not true. It's a ghastly tale of an employee at a Chinese restaurant who cheats, murders, and uses the bodies of his victims in his recipes. He was the Jeffrey Dahmer of the Far East. And this movie shows all the gory details, including some things that conventional Hollywood movies avoid. This is a big step beyond the routine horror/screamer cinema fare.

5 out of 5 stars Mind Blowing Cat III Horror Story... One of the Best..........2007-01-19

'The Untold Story' is purportedly based on a true story. If that is indeed the case, this film is one of the more horrifying endeavors I have had the pleasure to witness in all my years. Even if it is not, this still quite a film...

Herman Yau directed this HK horror masterpiece masterfully. Anthony Wong (as Kai) gives one of the most convincing psycho performances I have ever encountered (at that's saying a lot)...

The story is a relatively simple one (albeit very effective). At the outset, Kai and his boss have some sort of monetary dispute involving gambling and cheating. An argument ensues, at which point Kai than proceeds to go sickhouse, and kill the man... Fast forward 8 years...

Kai is running a restaurant. Mysteriously, the previous owner and his family are nowhere to be found. As the police and various people begin to inquire about how Kai came into ownership of the restaurant, the questions begin to pile up (as do the missing bodies)...

Kai, being witty as well as psychotic devises a clever and creative way to dispose of the various bodies that he has created. By the way, don't eat the 'pork buns'...

Eventually the local police (who are portrayed as silly, Police Academy-esquire buffoons) become suspicious, leading to the arrest and eventual imprisonment of Kai. Torture and brutality ensue, culminating in a coerced confession presented beautifully and horrifically by Yau...

Much has been made of the violent and wicked nature of this film. Perhaps I am jaded, but I did not find this film to be gratuitously violent. All of the violent and wicked acts depicted were in context, and served the purpose of showing what a monster Kai is..

This may sound like a rather simple film. Plotwise it is. However, the story was well-constructed, and Yau's capable direction keep things moving forward engagingly so. This is a captivating and enthralling story, all the more incredible because it allegedly happened. If you love a good true crime/horror story (and are not of the squeamish variety), you will most likely find this to be a fascinating and well-done film...

5 out of 5 stars Now This is What I Call a Horror Film!.......2006-09-24

Fasten your seat belts because you're in for a hell of a ride of no holds barred horror! The story of the film centers around the "Eight Immortals Restaurant", where a gambling addicted, fugitive, psychotic cook slaughters his employer and his family to death only to declared himself as the new owner. He would then murder anyone to avoid suspicion including murdering and chopping up his employees and turning them into "human roast pork buns" where he would then sell and feed it to his patrons including the police, who are investigating the whereabouts of the previous owner and his family. Warning....This film does not shy away from violence! Head bashings, human torching, eye gouging, stabbings, rape, chopsticks inserted into female genitelia, throat slashings, beheadings, chopped up bodies, etc. Of all the horror films I've seen and I've seened plenty...this film went a little to far. How far? The sequence of the restaurant's previous owner and his family including their six children being chopped up in gruesome detail, would've alone had any American director in the U.S. shot to death. Believe me...it's that revolting. Although the violence is way over the top...the film is supported by a good script, good production values and an excellent performance by Anthony Wong as "the Bunman". Two thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars The original is still the best.......2007-02-17

This is the original black and white version, at least on one disk. Supposedly produced in just a few days near Los Angeles' Skid Row, the treat here is to see and hear the comic one liners, the outrageous accent and performance of the shop owner, and the 1st acting role for a certain now-famous actor.

For me, definitely, turning this into a musical was a step back.

1 out of 5 stars Colorization and Nelson commentary insulting to this classic.......2006-12-17

This film deserves better treatment. There is no reason the film should be colorized nor tainted by the insulting comedic commentary by Mike Nelson. "L.S. of H." may not be "The Godfather" but it certainly isn't "Manos the Hands of Fate" either. Avoid Legend Films releases.

5 out of 5 stars Best-Looking Restoration Of A Legendary Cult Classic Comedy !.......2006-07-11

Roger Corman's Original 1960 version of "The Little Shop Of Horrors" is considered by many as a true cult classic comedy of B-Movies,even the most respected of film critics.Unfortunately depending on the tastes and opinions of film fans that were used to seeing this legendary film comedy through the public domain since there was a lack of copyright in the titles,(same thing had happen to "Night Of The Living Dead") and for many years since the dawn of the videocassette and late late movie shows, those versions were vastly inferior and often poor-looking in terms of presentation and contrast. Now the great folks at Legend Films have finally put out a brand-new definitive and excellent restored presentation of this cult hit on DVD in both the original black & white version as well as the disc's main presentation of showcasing a brand-new restored digitally colorized version too.As with previous selected Legend releases of classic horror/B-movies in their DVD series, the disc features a well-done and at times hilarious commentary by MST3K's Mike Nelson and the great thing is that you can listen to the track on both versions of the film, giving the b&w version sort of a MST3K-flavor to it (I love how he refers to the opening Filmgroup logo as little Reese Cups !).Despite packaging claims that is the first time the film has been colorized,it's actually the second colorized incarnation of the film.First colorized on videocassette in the very late '80's with lousy and at times amateur results, this Legend version completely blows away the first attempt and looks like it was actually filmed in color, but of course this films' legendary budgetary constraints prevented from actually filming it in color.Of course lets not forget that the film features a very very young Jack Nicholson,in his fourth film role,in a memorable role as a crazy dentist patient.I must say, this Legend version of "Little Shop" is probably the most superior and sharpest looking out of all the previous versions of the film that you're possibly going to see and no wonder it was transferred from an excellent 35mm print of the film ! Other extras, besides the Nelson commentary, round out the package including both restored color/unrestored b&w trailers to "Little Shop",and the following colorized trailers for "Plan 9 From Outer Space","House On Haunted Hill","Carnival Of Souls",and "Reefer Madness".Plus a gallery of nine man-eating plants,if any kids are planning to do a school project on man-eating plants, this could actually be a fun reference guide, and also a very short clip called "Man Eating Plants" which is actually the president of Legend Films Barry Sandrew vigorously eating vegetable plants such as celery (always eat your vegetables folks !).Well-done packaging, excellent eye-catching menus and a sparkling transfer of both versions will definitely please any film buff, both Hollywood and B-Movie fans alike ! This is by far one of the first best DVD releases of 2006 and is highly recommended for old and new fans alike instead of those who only prefer the 1986 spectacular Frank Oz musical remake with Rick Moranis and Steve Martin.Highly recommended !

UPDATE 11/24/06:
Just Recently,Buena Vista Home Entertainment in association with Roger Corman have finally released an "authorized" DVD release of "Little Shop Of Horrors" as well as a nicely restored original black & white version of Nicholson's debut film "The Cry Baby Killer".Unfortunately, the recent disc's presentation of "Little Shop" is in fact the ORIGINAL colorized version, slightly mentioned above, that was first produced and eventually released to video in 1987 by Color Systems Technology. The source print used for the color version (other than the fact that the quality was directly copied off a video master for the DVD) is surprisingly in quite good condition, but it really truly is one of the worst examples of 1980's colorization technology I've ever seen and will probably be the last. The colors are often the same as certain objects (ie: the outside of Mushnick's Shop and the greens for the flowers, etc.),tons of continuity errors (ie: clothing, signs, etc.) and does anybody wish to care seeing Audrey Jr. looking like a talking watermelon plant? Reportedly, that color version was authorized by none other than Corman himself and it's easy to see why many directors above his stature hate and disregard colorization.Nicholson/Corman fans alike aren't going to be impressed with that bust of a release and it's very easy to see why the '87 colorized version was out of circulation for many years.Easier said than done, the newly restored Legend Films release is by far, hands down, the real winner due to the technology, version options, and bonus materials !

5 out of 5 stars Best presentation of LITTLE SHOP yet!!!!.......2006-07-10

Legend Film's DVD of Little Shop of Horrors easily has THE BEST picture/sound quality I've seen for this title.

There have been dozens upon dozens of public-domain VHS releases, and many DVD releases too. All poor quality. This transfer blows away ALL of those.

I could care less about the "colorized" version, even if Legend's technique is good, it still looks like pastel-crap to me.

The black and white version (also featured on the disc), is gorgeous. Crisp, and full of detail. The 35mm source materials are in great shape (except Nicholson's line "I'm looking for Dr. Farbe", which is missing frames.. why they didn't restore them with 16mm/video is beyond me). I'm a big fan of this movie, and overall was VERY impressed with the transfer.

The DVD does include the original theatrical trailer, and a "restored" colorized version of the trailer (recreated to look like the original b&w trailer). The Mike Nelson commentary is decent (I'm a huge fan of MST3k), but usualy just makes fun of the movie, rather than any real information. Too bad, since the movie is in a higher class than some of Legend's other titles.

An audio commentary with Jonathan Haze, Roger Corman, Jackie Joseph, or Charles B. Griffith (depending on who's alive still) would have been a better choice.

Legend has done a supurb job, finally giving this movie a proper DVD presentation. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

4 out of 5 stars Action packed and better than the series.......2006-03-20

The reason I said that was because i decided to watch Mezzo forte before the series. Watching the main character kill people in the movie kinda makes it weird when they try not to kill in the series. Well anyway Mezzo forte is not your usual anime that contains non stop action (unless you refer to adult situations action). I actually enjoyed watching the movie even though the adult schenes got out of hand sometimes but its still a likeable anime and the edited version is out there for those of you that can't handle that kind of situations. But over all who doesn't like two girls blasting each other with firearms?

Story: 4(Intresting plot its likeable)
Music: 4(it seemes to blend in with the movie)
animation: 5 (Very good specially the action parts which seem intresting not those...)

5 out of 5 stars this sets a good example for kids.......2006-02-20

This UNCUT version includes graphic sex, which is why it has garnered lots of buzz in the anime circles. The action and violence is great I love Mezzo Forte.

4 out of 5 stars Mezzo Forte=Explosions, Blood, and Sex.......2006-01-20

I've been waiting a long time for Amazon.com to pick up the uncut version of this title so I can review it, and here it finally is, with a bonus T-shirt to boot. Fanboy's rejoice.

First off, Mezzo Forte Uncut is a hentai film. Though maybe not as blatant as other animated porn, it still has two very graphic sex scenes in it that may turn people away, especially since they deal with the rape of the main character. If this bothers you (and I wouldn't blame anyone if it did) then redirect your attention to the edited version, which has everything but the sex scenes, and doesn't lose much because of it, at least story wise. And, before you leave now, after this paragraph the sex scenes will not be mentions henceforth.

That out of the way, Mezzo Forte follows Mikura, a tough chick who can and will fight anybody who crosses her path. She's apart of the DSA, a group of private-eye-like agents who only accept dangerous jobs, and they accept their most dangerous job yet in Mezzo Forte. They are charged to kidnap the savage owner of a baseball team named Momokichi. Of course, they accept the mission not knowing exactly what they are getting themselves into; for Momokicki has a daughter who in many ways rivals Mikura, both in skill and in looks, only she's as unstable as an active volcano. What follows is a series of back-and-forth battles between Mikura and Momomi.

The action in this movie is great, and very detailed. The exaggeration of the action, with Mikura doing impossible flips and spins and leaps, makes it all the better. The animation is great as well, better in fact than its non-hentai sequel Mezzo. Though the voices could have been done better, this can be solved by watching the subbed version instead.

Depending on your tastes, I'd recommend this or the cut version to anyone who enjoys solid action in their anime. Also, if you're curious about some of Mikura's past, which is explored a little in the Mezzo series, then pick this up, because some of the cut-scenes seen in Mezzo go all the way back to here. And, because it was made by the same director, Mezzo Forte is almost a direct clone (and they even make jokes about this in the film) to Kite, so pick this up if you liked Kite.

Man this is some fun modern black exploitation and I must say I have never seen anything like it. I like this movie for a lot of resions, great dialog, great cast and for real looking settings. I only wish we would have had the token white hottie so the bad black girls could have picked on her skinny butt till she got her turn at the slasher's blade. The folks who are picken on this film must not like slasher film's.
I am telling you I have set threw way to many slasher flicks and this one is better then 50% of them any day of the week.
This is not Menace 2 Society people. This is trash talken thugs and one dude trying to make it out of the ghetto, oh that does sound familiar ..
any way good stuff, do not miss it.

1 out of 5 stars These great reviews smell like another marketing ploy..........2004-06-24

I bought this movie then turned it in to a used dvd/cd exchange the following week...I was so dissapointed! In the film, the director, the actors, the script---Just dissapointed. I am a fan of indie films, and a film of urban films, however this is just a sad rip off of scream and I emphasize sad!!! And this trick that the studio plays on buyers placing Mack 10 and Bizzy Bone's names on the cover as leads when neither one of them have more than a few minutes of sceene time is unfair and missleading. If I were one of the true leading actors who starred in this film I would feel let down by this. Devoting much of your time to a project then getting pushed aside because you dont have a recognizable name?!?! Atleast they can say starring yadda yadda yadda with appearances by Mack 10 and Bizzy Bone. And the stars of the film from what I can remember gave dissmal performances. The main guy (corn rows, lightskin) was o.k. Nothing memorable. He's kinda pretty boyish but not a great performer nor believable. The leader of the opposing gang (tall, lrg frame, original suspect) was awful! Slured speach, needs acting lessons desperately. Bottom line- THIS FILM IS A JOKE! Not a funny one! I'm dissapointed in Tim Folsome! Maybe he was behind on his rent or something and needed money. Thats what it seemed like to me. That he threw anything into the market just to get paid! Shame on him!!!!

    4 out of 5 stars Cutthroat Success.......2004-01-14

Cutthroat Alley is a decent film from one of the best independent directors of today (Timothy Wayne Forsome), I love his films, because of the realness and similar subjects of the "Ghetto", surrondings. Bizzy Bone is in a scene and so is the "Crazy Thug" Mack 10, but the lead actor in the film is awesome, If I was you I would get it if you are a true Timothy fan or just plain indies flim fan.

4 out of 5 stars The Unexpected Cult Classic -- With Jack Nicholson!.......2006-05-03

Basic Plot: When the employee of a small street-corner flower shop brings in a strange-looking plant that grows and grows, the seemingly hopeless business skyrockets with more and more curious customers. Unfortunately, the secret to this monster of a plant is that it feeds on human blood!

The film itself was surprising. I expected it right from the start to be a dud, but it quickly blossomed (excuse the pun) into a pretty funny horror-comedy. It's a fairly cheap 1960 black-n-white movie, so don't expect anything of a masterpiece. But for the price it's so commonly found at, it's certainly entertaining and worth the purchase.

Now, as many DVDs will boast, Jack Nicholson did indeed take part in The Little Shop Of Horrors, but it's not one of his first big roles. He'd only done a few, pretty much unknown films before this, and his character did not get a lot of screen time. Just under four minutes, more precisely. He plays the part of a quirky, nasally-voiced dental patient named Wilbur Force who finds pleasure in pain (hence his excitement to be at the dentist -- insisting that the doc uses no novocaine because it "dulls the senses"). While the small time he has on the screen is amusing, it is definitely too short! Nicholson fans will love to see him at just 23 years old, yet will be left longing for more.

Regardless of the brief nature of Jack's inclusion (again, it's still a great scene), I think The Little Shop Of Horrors is overall a decently funny movie that's worth the buy. Unfortunately, as far as extras go for this particular edition, there's nothing to look forward to. Unless you want to take an extremely easy quiz on the movie (it's three questions long for pete's sake!) or read a small bio on Nicholson (which is obviously invalid in its info, listing his "1992" movie as "Batman2" -- '92? Come on, everybody knows it's '89, and with that 2 or Z or whatever on the end somebody should really check these things for typos before sending them into mass production) then it's pretty much pointless to think of this DVD as the "Collector's Edition" it advertises itself as. And even though the sound comes through alright, the picture quality is a bit weak. So, for those thinking about getting the "Platinum Disc" DVD (the one with the cover having half of Jack's smirking face on it with a bluish background), I'd just warn you that there are probably much better deals for around the same price.

4 out of 5 stars Movie- great comedy/horror. Transfer- not so good........2005-11-23

This movie is hilarious, macabre, and was shot in TWO DAYS. I won't go into the plot, because the reason I am writing this review is to urge some company like Criterion to remaster this film so it looks really, I mean really, good. Original black and white movie. And with commentaries, trailers, and such. I mean painstakingly remaster this movie so it looks like it was shot yesterday in black and white.

5 out of 5 stars FUNNY FUNNY FILM.......2005-03-20

Probably one of the first true horror spoofs, THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS is a classic little film, still packing the kind of laughs movies like SCREAM and SCARY MOVIE probably got from this gem. Aside from the well known first appearance by a very young Jack Nicholson as a demented dental patient, the movie has other moments of comedic genius. Myrtle Vail as Seymour's hypochondriacal mother is a hoot, from her ecstasy over Seymour's gift of a cough syrup that's 98% alcohol, to the gourmet dinner she serves Audrey, and to the classic line, "You said you wouldn't get married until you got me an iron lung," Vail's performance is priceless. Likewise, the demure Jackie Joseph, who makes mincemeat of the English language; Mel Welles as Gravis Mushnick, the floral shop owner whose fake Jewish accent is likewise hilarious; Dick Miller as the flower-eating customer; the chase through the junkyard with the head rising out of the toilet seat; there are many little scenes that are funny because they are so silly. I love this movie; it makes me laugh and takes me back to a youth filled with those black and white classics.

3 out of 5 stars good movie: badly transfered.......2001-07-24

I had origanlly seen this movie on a late night horror movie host and loved it having already seen the musical version. I bought the DVD expecting DVD quality. The transfer to DVD is bad. It's proably one of the worse ones I own. It's a little choppy, very grainy and somewhat blurry. There's also a spotlight effect once in awhile that I don't remember being there before (where the egdes of the movie are a little darker then the center). If you look carefully you can see waves going though the picture during the first part of chapter 2. The sound is a little muffled. I rate the transfer at 2 (I'm sure there's a worse one) and only gave it a 3 becasue of the movie it's self.

Hilarious, cheapie black comedy from 1960 that may be the best film by B-picture master Roger Corman, other than Bucket of Blood, made about the same time with the same writer, Charles Griffith. Seymour (Jonathan Haze) is an assistant in a skid-row flower shop who's on the point of losing his job when the unusual plant he's developed turns the store into a major attraction. The only problem is that the plant needs human blood to live, all the while crying, "Feed me! FEED ME!" Luckily, Seymour causes a series of inadvertent deaths that more than make up for the food shortage. Jack Nicholson provides a comic sidebar as a nutjob masochist visiting a dentist's office. Giggling and wild-eyed from the same impulse that might lead others to read scandal sheets, he can be seen in the dentist's waiting room reading aloud from Pain magazine. Famous for having the shortest shooting schedule on record (two days and a night), The Little Shop of Horrors spawned an off-Broadway musical that was in turn made into a successful film in 1986, starring Rick Moranis and Steve Martin. It was in just this quick-shoot atmosphere that Corman nurtured the careers of many of America's most celebrated film directors; this little shop of honors included Francis Ford Coppola, Peter Bogdanovich, Martin Scorsese, and Jonathan Demme. The DVD has optional Japanese subtitles, very generous bios of the stars and filmmakers, and a clean, crisp transfer. --Jim Gay

3 out of 5 stars Wrong movie reviewed.......2004-04-11

Your review of Roger Corman's low-budget "Little Shop of Horrors" by James G. Mack actually reviews the musical version, made many years later. You need to correct that.

2 out of 5 stars great movie, lousy copy.......2003-03-22

If you've never seen Little Shop but love humor on the edge, this is more than worth the money (though I bought the same copy from another source for a dollar less).

But, if you love film, this copy is abysmal, not even close to Corman's original. There's dirt on the film, contrast is limited (though the movie is watchable) and detail is definitely compromised. It's recorded in VHS EP mode.

Corman made some great films, this title is arguably the best of its genre, and I hate to think that the original may be lost or missing, and this is all we have left.

It may have been shot in two days, but it was excellent B/W not so long ago.

3 out of 5 stars Right Movie, wrong version.......2002-03-20

I haven't seen this version, so the stars are "just because".

Every review of this movie refers to Rick Moranis, whom was probably a child of 10 or less when this movie was produced. Please keep the reviews to the correct versions of the movies.

    1 out of 5 stars Wrong Description.......2002-01-13

I purchased this item for my friend who speaks fluent Spanish. The description read "dubbed in Spanish". After speaking to my friend after Christmas, he told me that the movie was in English, with Spanish subtitles. I was embarrased, but he obviously didn't want to hurt my feelings, so he just said it was OK. I just let it go but I think the description should be changed. It just was so embarrassing for me.

4 out of 5 stars The Original Man-Eating Plant Epic is an Absurd Romp.......2001-02-25

I recently watched the musical remake of Little Shop of Horrors and enjoyed it immensely, and my curiosity about the genesis of that film lead me to its progenitor. I hadn't realised that Roger Corman's original was intended as a comedy--I'd thought that it was a cheapie horror film with camp humor arising from its unintended absurdity. This is absolutely not the case, and I was very pleasantly surprised. The absurdity of Little Shop, and there is plenty, is all fully intended. At times it is almost as if the Monty Python troupe is doing a black-and-white horror spoof, it is so good. I find it impossible to say whether the musical remake or the original is "better"--they are simply different, and each amusing in its own way. I prefered Rick Moranis's Seymour to that of Jonathan Haze, but Jackie Joseph's Audrey had funnier lines and was less pathetic than Ellen Greene's. But what really surprised me was that the comic touches I had thought were signatures of the Saturday Night Live/Second City crowd were all in the original: the sadistic dentist and his masochistic patient; "Pain" magazine, "Feed me!", and more. Futhermore, the original had some more absurd characters that didn't make it into the remake, including a parody of the detectives from Dragnet and Seymour's mother, a hypochondriac whose home cooking is all flavoured with medicine! Although the sound and picture quality of the version I watched was poor, it was worth sitting through if you enjoyed the more recent version. Also worthy of note was the spiky, xylophone-timpani-and-baritone-saxophone-laden score by Fred Katz.
