Description
Treasure of the Amazon: In the depths of the lush, steamy Amazon jungle, rife with exotic life forms, a group of adventurers embarks on a quest to discover a legendary river reportedly filled with diamonds "the size of your eyes" as well as precious jewels and gold, and in the process finds itself enveloped in incomprehensible barbarism. At the mercy of this mysterious jungle labyrinth, the treasure hunters are forced into fierce battles with determined cannibals, ruthless headhunters, ferocious alligators, piranhas, a tribe of topless female warriors, and, equally disturbing - the greed of their own colleagues, raising the question "Which is more treacherous - the greed of man or the perils of the jungle?" Created by one of Mexico's most famous exploitation and action/adventure film directors, Rene Cardona, Jr., this film has been labeled "One of the best Indiana Jones style films seen." Island of Lost Souls: Based on the Best Seller by Jose Leon Sanchez, which relates the twenty years of imprisonment during which he lived on the Island of Lost Souls. The brutality of the events, nakedly narrated in the book, propelled the novel to major success in Latin America, and later to receive worldwide acclaim. The film adaptation of the heart-wrenching story went on to break box office records in Mexico, the film's country of origin.

Holding Back THE GOODS!.......2005-02-19
Purchased with the hope that Leon would bare all or mostly all throughout, he instead chooses to be a bit of a tease. There are however several excellent 'skin scenes.' Early on he turns away from his painting stool to reveal his 'accordian-like' abs to Regina King. She had probably already buried her face in them weeks before in a hotel room between shoots. 'Til this flick I wasn't aware that this boy's rear end was that plump or that his back resembled a railroad maze of mass muscle. When he squirmed back & forth in bed with the ghost, (Cynda Williams) the nooks & crannies seemed endless. When this 'most memorable scene' first unfolded, I remember thinking, "hold on for dear life pal- I'm comin' thru." Boy did I crave the opportunity to climb onboard myself, pinch the hell out of those gorgeous cheeks & conduct a MAJOR TASTE TEST from head to toe. Unfortunately this chocolate dude looks best when he's facing the camera sans shirt & the shots we do get in that category are all at a distance. Even the zoom fails here. While not thick & bulky in the upper chest, he's well cut & defined. That neatly compliments the aformentioned washboard abs. Williams pre-CAUGHT UP gives us plenty of flesh displays but even she begrudges us the pleasure of seeing her flat on her back fending off Leon's advances. Now that would've been HOT! Having caught Leon in other vehicles like LITTLE RICHARD & ABOVE THE RIM, he seems to bulk up only on occasion which is a pity 'cause when he sets his mind to it he can deliver DELICIOUS with the best of his fellow Hollywood brothas. Pass on this one- trust me this black cat's been beefier. We're getting shortchanged.
Leon!!!.......2003-10-25
1 star for Leon...he is so hot! He has a great body and super hot rear end. And just to let you know I am a 19 year old straight guy!
GREAT CONCEPT--A BLACK THRILLER/LOVE STORY.......2002-09-15
I LIKED THE CONCEPT OF THIS FILM. IT DEALS WITH THE PAST AND THE PRESENT. AFRICAN RELIGION AND AFRICAN AMERICAN SYMBOLISM, A LOVE TRIANGLE (A HUSBAND AND WIFE AND A GHOST. AND THE PAINTER/"VAN GOGH" MENTAL ILLNESS CONCEPT. LEON AND REGINA TAYLOR ARE GOOD IN THIS. ITS GOOD TO SEE REGINA TAYLOR PLAY A DIMENSIONAL CHARACTER. SHE'S ALWAYS PLAYING A STOIC ASEXUAL CHARCTER IN MOVIES. TOO BAD THE MOVIE DOESN'T GET INTO THE SUBPLOT OF THE SLAVE GIRL (CYNDA WILLIAMS)MARRYING HER SLAVEMASTER AND HER TRAGIC DEMISE AND TEH HOUSE THAT SHE HAUNTS THAT LEON AND REGINA BUYS.. EXCELLENT AND INTELLIGENT FILM. GREAT SCENERY. THE END OF FILM IS CHEAPENED WITH NO EXPLANATION OF LEON'S CONDITION AFTER HIS SPIRIT CAME BACK FROM HBEING POSESSED BY THE SLAVE GIRLS' (CYNDA)SEXUAL POSESSION OF HIM. THE SEX SCENE WITH LEON (WHO HAS A GREAT BODY!) AND TEH GHOST AND REGINA TAYLOR CATCHING HIM WAS HILARIOUS!
Very Sexy.......2001-10-21
I have to admit, the reason I bought this movie is to see the stunning beauty Cynda Williams play the role as a sex crazed ghost. She has an unbelievably gorgeous body and I'm a fan for life. I guess the role didn't require her to have any lines. The movie was real slow and non-emotional. Leon is a good actor but its not much he can do with this script.
Boring Film.......2001-07-10
I didn't like this movie because it was so boring. Nothing scary really happened. It wasn't even a bit violent. This movie belongs in the thriller section only, because it's not a horror movie whatsoever.
I kind of liked the acting. The beginning of the film is the kind of beginning that is put into a good horror movie. However this beginning tricks you. It seems like it is going to be a good horror flick, but turns out to be boring.
The ending was kind of pointless, too.

When you've got Charles Laughton and Bela Lugosi, how can you go wrong? Shipwreck victim Edward Parker (Richard Arlen) is stranded on an island run by the mysterious Dr. Moreau (Laughton). Moreau is hospitable enough, but the jungle is full of menacing shapes--and what about those ominous references to the House of Pain? Parker gradually learns of Moreau's unholy experiments and worries that he'll never escape. Though it has aged a bit, Island of Lost Souls is surprisingly spine-tingling, particularly the horrifying climax. Light and shadows are used especially well--occasionally, Moreau speaks with his face entirely hidden, except for his glittering eyes. Laughton turns in yet another superbly evil performance and even the somewhat worse-for-wear Lugosi is creepy as the pronouncer of the law. ("Are we not men?" Well, no, not exactly.) This is a nicely chilling classic that may even make you think twice about modern science's experimentation with genetics. Don't miss it. Remade as The Island of Dr. Moreau in 1977 and 1996. --Ali Davis

Still Fascinating With Its Foreboding Atmosphere.......2006-11-10
1933 saw the release of two seminal horror films based on H. G. Wells novels: one is `The Invisible Man' and the other is `Island of Lost Souls' based on Wells' `The Island of Dr. Moreau.' The latter was released from Paramount, the Hollywood studio better known for its entertaining films like Star Trek series today, but the central topic in `Lost Souls' is much darker and more disturbing than you expect even now.
Except for some minor points, the film is faithful to Well's original story, in which one Edward Parker (Richard Arlen) finds himself stranded on the small island after the shipwreck. Perhaps you already know the secrets of Dr. Moreau (Charles Laughton) and his `House of Pain' so I skip that part, but the film still has powerful moments when its shows its strange islanders and rituals about the way the doctor rules the place. Oh, and don't forget the vivisection scene.
What is really impressive is Charles Laughton as Doctor Moreau, conducting a series of `experiments' and hiding a sinister plan of making the first human-animal in the world behind his gentlemanly face. Compared to him, Richard Arlen's Parker looks too uptight and uninteresting, but that is how the story is meant to be.
But the real treasure of the film is Kathleen Burk as The Panther Woman, who is alarmingly sexy even by today's standards. If I were Parker, I would be very slow to leave the island. Bella Lugosi also appears `Sayer of the Law' with heavy make-up. His character is the antithesis to the Count that made him famous, but you can easily recognize him due to his distinctive mannerism.
The film's pace is slow and the soundtrack is too sparse, but `Island of Lost Souls' is full of foreboding atmosphere that is still fascinating.
IMDb says the film includes Allan Ladd and Randolph Scott (both not credited) as `Beast,' but I couldn't find them. Where are they?
Hey, check out that DVD Release Date........2006-09-08
The DVD Release Date above says December 31, 1969. Who knew they had DVDs back in 1969? Oh well, back to the future.
Chilling and creepy!.......2006-06-23
Even by today's horror movie standards, this first black and white film version of H.G. Wells' "The Island Of Dr. Moreau" can be considered a worthy frightfest! Charles Laughton's portrayal of Dr. Moreau is devilishly evil and far superior to Burt Lancaster's in 1977 (that was a good version, though) and Marlon Brando's in 1996 (Oh, man, that version really sucked!).
And now to Universal Studios; you've put out nearly every other classic monster film on DVD, even the ones many people have never heard of. What are you waiting for on this one???
Where's Charley?.......2006-06-15
Come on one of you wonderful DVD companies. Please put out the definitive version of Island of Lost Souls. This is a great film. Creepy, inventive and chilling (not to mention the sexy sexy Lota the panther girl). Great performances by Charles Laughton and Bela Lugosi. Where is it already? I'm giving this DVD only 4 stars because of the other film on it. Wax Museum is okay but I'm waiting breathlessly for Lost Souls.
Very good movie.......2006-03-22
I have seen this movie many times in the past, and while it tries to look ghoulish, in some ways, the creatures look rather comical, but still it is A VERY EXCELLENT MOVIE. Charles Laughton, AS ALWAYS and BELA LUGOSI, AS ALWAYS, are the movie, and through it all , it can be quite enjoyable.
My problem is that I am trying to buy it, and Amazon is not coming through. Not good for a customer and buyer.
