Cue the Henry Mancini music and watch out for Cato--the gist of the Pink Panther series has been gathered in a six-disc boxed set. At the center of it is Peter Sellers's incarnation of inspector Jacques Clouseau, a hopelessly bumbling detective with a genius for resting his hands in the wrong place (on the surface of a spinning globe, for instance) and mangling the English language.
Writer-director Blake Edwards cast Peter Ustinov as Clouseau in The Pink Panther, but Ustinov dropped out just before shooting began. Edwards (who recounts this story in a spotty commentary track included here) and Sellers bonded over their affection for Laurel and Hardy, and immediately transformed the character of Clouseau into a walking sight gag. The first film has a delicious swinging sixties vibe, while jewel thief David Niven, Claudia Cardinale, and Capucine occupy as much screen time as Sellers. Sellers really hits his stride in A Shot in the Dark, an elegantly funny tale of Clouseau sleuthing out a murder investigation. This one introduced Herbert Lom, as the increasingly frazzled Inspector Dreyfus, and Burt Kwouk, as Clouseau's houseboy-nemesis Cato. Sellers and Edwards, whose relationship was stormy, put Clouseau aside for over 10 years, until a trilogy of mid-1970s comedies restored the character to commercial (and dare we say cultural) primacy.
Unfortunately, the very funny comeback picture, Return of the Pink Panther, is absent from this set due to rights issues with the studios involved. The Pink Panther Strikes Again has Dreyfus going bananas and targeting Clouseau; Revenge of the Pink Panther puts Clouseau in a hilarious series of disguises, climaxing in a wonderfully mounted sequence in Hong Kong. (Throughout the series, the calm, classical staging of gags by Blake Edwards reminds you of what a lost art this has become.) Trail of the Pink Panther looks better now than it did when originally released in 1982, shortly after Sellers's death; it's a batch of unused Sellers routines from previous pictures, strung together with a loose plot. In other words, it's a "deleted scenes" extra, and quite funny at times.
Subsequent efforts Curse of the Pink Panther and Son of the Pink Panther are neither included nor mentioned. A half-hour documentary gives pleasant memories from Edwards, but feels incomplete. The cartoon Panther gets his own 11-minute mini-doc, plus six cartoon shorts including the Oscar-winning "The Pink Phink." --Robert Horton

Hilarious!.......2007-05-09
Just 4 stars. The missing one is for the missing "The Return of the Pink Panther (1974)". If you are looking for extreme and healthy fun, no one could it be better than Sellers to pop ups your laughings, he was great doing any role. This is a delicious collection, just improve the one buying the missing "..return", and of course..."The Party"
Review of The Pink Panther Film Collection.......2007-01-17
It is absolutely first class entertainment. It is intelligent, witty, silly, "classy" - something we rarely achieve these days. Gather your family and give them an education in how to develop a keen sense of humor or, even better, invite your friends to watch - don't forget the martinis.

My dad was always talking about how he wanted this boxed set on DVD since he found out it existed. Christmas rolled around and he hadn't mentioned it in a while, so I surprised him with it and he was thrilled. The set is very nicely packaged, very high quality, and looks very nice. Also, my dad was pleased to see a couple of the lesser known movies (he said two are very common on TV but the others you hardly ever see). He's very happy with it, and I am very happy with my purchase. Well worth the money!

The package arrived in excellent shape and the DVD's are all perfect. If you like the Pink Panther its a great buy.
What's not to like about Peter Sellers?.......2007-01-06
Fun to watch and relive these fine films on a nice wide-screen plasma TV. It will take you back to a more innocent age. Hard to watch if you are using a 27" tube set however.

"That Aardvark Can Bust Up A Party Faster Than A Skunk In An Air Conditioner".......2007-06-07
Imagine my utter surprise and delight when I found out these 70's comedy classics finally made it to DVD. I mean, how can you NOT love a stubborn Aardvark who talks like Jackie Mason and an Ant who sounds like Dean Martin going head to head in one bizarre hilarious chase after another.
And EXTRA bonus cool points for the great jazz music that accompanied these chases, played by some of the best West Coast jazz cats of the time (like Pete Candoli, Ray Brown, Shelly Manne, Jimmy Rowles etc), heck, how many cartoons have musician credits at the beginning?
But this YESTERDAY!!!!!
Forgotten Treasure.......2007-05-18
I bought this for my eight year old daughter. I never sat and watched it with her but listened to the cartoon dialog as she watched. I had forgotten how funny the Ant Aardvark cartoons were, especially the sound-alike voices of Dean Martin for the Ant and Henny Youngman for the Aardvark. I remembered that I enjoyed the Ant-Aardvark cartoons more than the Pink Panther when on Saturday morning TV because of this dialog. It's great.
Must Get For Classic Cartoon Fans!.......2007-05-15
All 17 episodes are included on this DVD (UNCUT and not speeded up...aka Classic Media). These cartoons are hilarious. If you remember watching "The Pink Panther Show" back in the day, you will love this DVD.
The Ant & The Aardvark.......2007-05-14
What a cool blast from the past this collection is. Just recently I saw John Byner on David Letterman's Late Show and in his piece on the show he did the voices for both the Ant and the Aardvark. What a cool surprise. Byner did both their voices. The Aardvark's voice was patterned on comedian Jackie Mason while the Ant's voice sounded a little like Dean Martin. Thanx for reissuing this collection, both parents and kids can enjoy this fun and classic cartoons all over again.
DePatie-Freleng team's underrated classic cartoon series.......2007-05-04
The Ant and the Aardvark series is DePatie-Freleng Enterprises cartoon comic series. DePatie-Freleng team is major cartoon making company of 1960's. Of course, Freleng is former WB cartoon director Friz Freleng. DePatie-Freleng team's most famous outing is Pink Panther series. They won Academy awards with their first Pink Panther cartoon THE PINK PHINK. And after that, they made very interesting, well made two cartoon series. They're The Ant and the Aardvark, The Inspector series.
The Ant and the Aardvark had same kind of cartoon structure with Road Runner series or Tom and Jerry series. Hunter and hunted, but Ant and the Aardvark had unique feel and style all its own. DePatie-Freleng's cartoons are back to the old silent comedies roots, pantomime. Cartoons are basically visual genre so many classic cartoon makers did their best works with visual gags.
The Ant and the Aardvark series is visual cartoon style at its finest. Maybe if you like verbal gags more than visual gags, this series is not suitable for you. But, if you're a fan of visual gags, this is a series for you. The Pink Panther series is more famous than this series, but as a long time classic cartoon fans, I certainly believe The Ant and the Aardvark series had style, inventiveness all its own.
And, reasonably good price, you can get all The Ant and the Aardvark cartoons in your living room. I think that's a pretty good deal for any classic cartoon fans. And, one final note: The Inspector series will be releasing in July. I wrote reviews about The Inspector series, upcoming Woody Woodypecker classic cartoon collection, Tex Avery's Droopy:compleat theatrical collection, too. So, please check it out. Thanks for reading.

Really Not a Bad Collection.......2006-03-03
The issue of this Pink Panther compendium is rather disappointing for a few important reasons. I knew that RETURN OF THE PINK PANTHER would probably not be included for legal reasons and 1968's INSPECTOR CLOUSEAU with Alan Akin as Clouseau as well, but I did expect to have CURSE OF THE PINK PANTHER and SON OF THE PINK PANTHER included.
THE PINK PANTHER is a film richly textured with well defined characters, plot, dialogue, production design and location photography. Niven, Sellers and Wagner give very fine performances, which seem to remain fresh and vibrant to this day. Images of the Cortina ski lodge, the costume ball, the wild car chase and especially the animated Pink Panther are part of the iconic cinematic contribution from this film and Henry Mancini's theme and score are equally audibly iconic and indelible as well. This is an eternally endearing film and introduces Inspector Clouseau as Peter Sellers established that character for all future generations to come.
A SHOT IN THE DARK is a great example of sophisticated slapstick (screenplay by Blake Edwards and William Peter Blatty based on plays by Harry Kurnitz and Marcel Achard). A SHOT IN THE DARK has Herbert Lom as Chief Inspector Charles Dreyfus and Burt Kwouk as Kato, which THE PINK PANTHER did not. A SHOT IN THE DARK focuses on Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau. It is really more character based and driven than THE PINK PANTHER. In many ways A SHOT IN THE DARK is much funnier. It really defines the character of Clouseau a good-natured inspector who just cannot see the forest for the trees. George Sanders is once again brilliant in another similar role, the type that he perfected throughout his career. This time he is the very sardonic yet stately Benjamin Ballon one of Clouseau's suspects. The cast also includes Elke Sommer (the most obvious suspect to the audience), Tracy Reed, Graham Stark and Martin Benson. The opening shot (shots in the dark) and the nudist colony scenes are great examples of Blake Edwards' direction at his best. Production designer Michael Stringer and cinematographer Christopher Challis visually replicate the idea of shots and murder taking place in the dark or at least in places where passions run uncontrollable. A SHOT IN THE DARK has a much different look than the invigorating and opulent images found in THE PINK PANTHER. Henry Mancini once again delivers a very good score. A SHOT IN THE DARK's main title theme is very good but has been greatly overshadowed by THE PINK PANTHER theme. But can you blame it? A SHOT IN THE DARK is somehow in a league of its own yet it spawned all the great supporting characters found in the subsequent films which we all came to love and couldn't get enough of. A SHOT IN THE DARK was the foundation for what was to come and made the world of Inspector Clouseau so enduring and endearing yet there is something very different and special about this one film. It is somehow etched in a time that can never be replicated. To really enjoy it try to place yourself back in that time. A SHOT IN THE DARK is a true gem.
THE PINK PANTHER STRIKES AGAIN is a bit of a dichotomy. It starts off extremely humorous with a base in some form of reality. However, as the film progresses, its drifts into the world of the surreal with Herbert Lom really coming into his own in this film. He is outrageously funny and steals this film. Mancini's theme and score is once again on target. This is a fun outing in all.
THE REVENGE OF THE PINK PANTHER is an entry I was never really fond of, even though it was Peter Sellers' last actual portrayal of Inspector Clouseau. It started out excellent but slowly deteriorated into mundane and silly slapstick. By the time it reached Hong Kong it seemed forced. Even Henry Mancini's score seems a little tired in this one. THE REVENGE OF THE PINK PANTHER remains a weak entry in the series for me.
Despite the fact that the first 30 minutes of TRAIL OF THE PINK PANTHER were made up from unused footage and the like of Peter Sellers as Clouseau, these sequences are some of the funniest and most outrageously humorous from the PINK PANTHER series. The remainder of the film follows reporter Marie Jouvet (Joanna Lumley) as she sets a trail to find the whereabouts of the missing Inspector Clouseau. During these scenes we are treated to highlights from the previous films in the PINK PANTHER series and the feeling is one of endearing nostalgia. David Niven as Sir Charles Litton, Burt Kwouk as Cato, Capucine as Lady Simone Litton, Robert Loggia as Bruno Langois, Graham Stark as Hercule Lajoy and André Maranne as Sergeant Francois Duval are all present. Eventually Joanna Lumley meets Clouseau's father innovatively played by Richard Mulligan in a very memorable comic setting at the Clouseau estate. Perhaps this film was assembled to keep the PINK PANTHER series alive, yet it is sort of a guilty pleasure for me. In the final analysis and most importantly, the driving force in the entire film is Herbert Lom as Chief Inspector Charles Dreyfus. His brilliantly perfected performance with neurotic moments of strife and glee in reaction to the inept Clouseau, present or not, is the singular cohesive element that keeps this film afloat and perhaps is why PINK PANTHER series survived as long as it did.
In all this is really not a bad collection. It is just not complete.
Where is the missing DVD???.......2004-05-16
With one DVD missing from the collection The Return of th Pink Panther.. The one with Christopher Plummer..... How can this be called a complete box set ? I felt duped and taken and wish I had not purchased the so called 'Box Set'. I believed that I had all the series, however, one of the best ones is missing. I wouldn't purchase until this is corrected...
not the complete box set.......2003-11-21
after buying this box set i was very disappointed to find 2 of the films were not in it on reading reviews on this site i knew one film the return was missing but then i discovered that the curse of the pink panther was also not included.
