At the height of the Klondike gold rush of the 1890s, when thousands of prospectors dropped everything and raced off to Alaska hoping to find their fortunes, a remote railroad to the gold fields was built by blasting and cutting into sheer granite cliffs. The stampeders who traveled northward on the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad are long gone, but today tourists flock to the scenic views. This documentary begins by taking the viewer on a visit to Skagway, Alaska, a busy port of call for cruise ships that was the boom town where the railway began. Local historians and guides present some of the history of the town, and then the cameras go on board the train for an amazing ride on tracks placed on granite shelves that were blasted into the sides of the steep mountains. This documentary does a fine job of capturing the spectacular scenery, and there are a multitude of shots of the train climbing steep grades and passing over bridges spanning deep mountain passes. The theme of historical tourism permeates the presentation, and personnel from the U.S. National Park Service appear on camera to provide background on the wild times of the gold rush. This is an enticing introduction to both the scenery and the history of the Klondike gold rush. --Robert J. McNamara
