The film that officially signaled Disney's animation renaissance (following The Little Mermaid) and the only animated feature to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination, Beauty and the Beast remains the yardstick by which all other animated films should be measured. It relates the story of Belle, a bookworm with a dotty inventor for a father; when he inadvertently offends the Beast (a prince whose heart is too hard to love anyone besides himself), Belle boldly takes her father's place, imprisoned in the Beast's gloomy mansion. Naturally, Belle teaches the Beast to love. What makes this such a dazzler, besides the amazingly accomplished animation and the winning coterie of supporting characters (the Beast's mansion is overrun by quipping, dancing household items) is the array of beautiful and hilarious songs by composer Alan Menken and the late, lamented lyricist Howard Ashman. (The title song won the 1991 Best Song Oscar, and Menken's score scored a trophy as well.) The downright funniest song is "Gaston," a lout's paean to himself (including the immortal line, "I use antlers in all of my de-co-ra-ting"). "Be Our Guest" is transformed into an inspired Busby Berkeley homage. Since Ashman's passing, animated musicals haven't quite reached the same exhilarating level of wit, sophistication, and pure joy. --David Kronke --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5 out of 5 stars ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE!!!.......2007-06-30

5 out of 5 stars "Tale As Old As Time, Song As Old As Rhyme" ~ Belle And The Beast, Another Disney Classic.......2007-04-07

`Beauty and the Beast' `91 is yet another juggernaut of the animated Disney classics that were released in the `90's. The list included; `Aladdin' in `92, `Pocahontas' in '95 and `Mulan' in '98. It's a close call, but this one is possibly the best of the four with 'Aladdin' featuring the madcap voice of Robin Williams a close second.

`Beauty and the Beast' scores high marks in every category; storyline, character development, animation and cinematography, sound and music that says with you long after the final credits roll by. The only possible negative I can come up with about the release of this particular version is the inclusion of the song `To be Human Again.' It is rather redundant and definitely not equal to the caliber of the rest of the soundtrack. It's inclusion only serves to detract rather than enhance an otherwise perfectly done tale.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of New Disney.......2007-04-05

What a movie, and what a set. You get the timeless tale of Belle and the Beast, and three versions of the film, in a great quaility set. It's worth owning whether you have kids or not. This is a must buy.

Product Description

Shot in Salzburg against the majestic Bavarian Alps, THE SOUND OF MUSIC is considered one of the greatest screen musicals ever made. Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (Robert Wise), the film, based on a real family and their true events, tells the story of a young postulate, Maria (Julie Andrews), who, after proving too high-spirited for the Mother Abess and other nuns, is sent off to work as a governess to seven unruly children. The Von Trapp family is run, in military style, by the seemingly cold-hearted Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), a lonely widowed naval officer. Seeing how badly he and his children need companionship, he proposes to the Baroness Schraeder (Eleanor Parker), a calculating, mutual friend of beloved family friend Max Detweiler (Richard Haydn). It is the baroness who soon realizes that it's Maria--with her warmth and love for the children--the captain really loves. It is nearly bliss for the newly formed family who loves to sing together--except for the cloud looming over their beloved Austrian horizon: Hitler is ascending to power, forcing Von Trapp to decide whether to join the Nazi party--which he loathes--or force his family to leave their home forever. One of the most memorable scores ever written (by Rodgers and Hammerstein) and breathtaking performances by Andrews, Plummer, and the seven children mark this classic as one of the world's most favorite films.

When Julie Andrews sang "The hills are alive with the sound of music" from an Austrian mountaintop in 1965, the most beloved movie musical was born. To be sure, the adaptation of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's Broadway hit has never been as universally acclaimed as, say, Singin' in the Rain. Critics argue that the songs are saccharine (even the songwriters regretted the line "To sing through the night like a lark who is learning to pray") and that the characters and plot lack the complexity that could make them more interesting. It's not hard to know whom to root for when your choice is between cute kids and Nazis.

    Read our interview with
    Charmian Carr, who played
    Liesl von Trapp in The
    Sound of Music.
It doesn't matter. Audiences fell in love with the struggling novice Maria (Andrews), the dashing Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), and, yes, the cute kids, all based on a real-life World War II Austrian family. Such songs as "My Favorite Things," "Do Re Mi," "Climb Every Mountain," and the title tune became part of the 20th century Zeitgeist. In addition, The Sound of Music officially became a cult hit when audiences in London began giving it the Rocky Horror Picture Show treatment, attending showings dressed as their favorite characters and delivering choreographed comments and gestures along with the movie. So why resist, especially when the 40th Anniversary Edition is the best DVD yet.

    The DVDs
As if the direct involvement of Julie Andrews weren't enough, the 40th Anniversary Edition of The Sound of Music is a must-have for fans because of the fond sense of nostalgia that will touch all but the worst cynic's heart. Andrews introduces both discs and contributes a commentary track on the film. It's a joy to hear her speak about the film (for example, she explains how she solved her dislike for the lyrics of "I Have Confidence"), and also heard are remarks by Christopher Plummer (who at one point refers to his being 48, which if true would mean his comments were made in about 1975), Charmian Carr (Liesl), choreographer Dee Dee Wood, and Johannes Von Trapp (the real-life Maria Von Trapp's youngest son, who admits that his father did have a whistle but claims that he was not as stern as portrayed in the film). Even with all those people involved, there are still significant gaps of silence, however. Retained from the previous two-disc editions is the commentary track by director Robert Wise, which during the musical numbers becomes an isolated score with no vocals. Also new are sing-along subtitles in English, Spanish, and French, which allow you to have your own sing-along at home. In addition, the film's remastering shows off a truer and much warmer sense of color.

On the second disc, Andrews participates in a new 63-minute documentary "My Favorite Things: Julie Andrews Remembers." But it's really a general making-of documentary with contributions from a number of principals, including director Robert Wise, who died in mid-2005 (not surprisingly, some stories are repeated from the commentary track and from the 87-minute documentary on the previous DVD). Andrews also shares a warm 19-minute sit-down with Christopher Plummer. Carr, who over the years has become the film's biggest advocate, narrates a new 22-minute documentary, "On Location with The Sound of Music," in which she revisits the places in Salzburg where the movie was filmed, and even joins one of the "Sound of Music tours" that have become a booming industry. And acknowledging another big industry, there's a 12-minute featurette on the sing-along phenomenon, focusing specifically on the audience, costumed and otherwise, that attended a sold-out Hollywood Bowl sing-along in 2005. Making special appearances at the event are four von Trapp great-grandchildren and all seven of the actors who played the children. Thankfully, those actors also appear in a 33-minute documentary "From Liesl to Gretl: A 40th Anniversary Reunion," in which they explain what they do now (many are still in show business) and share stories about the film, who was afraid of Christopher Plummer, and what they feel is their responsibility to the film's passionate fans. What's touching is how the group still considers themselves a family so many years later. Other material includes an A&E documentary on the von Trapps, Mia Farrow's screen test for the Liesl role, and a restoration comparison.

    What's Missing?
If you already own the previous two-disc editions, you'll want this 40th Anniversary Edition as well, but you might not want to toss those versions. Probably the most significant omission from this edition is the original 14-minute documentary Charmian Carr made in 1967, "Salzburg Sight and Sound." Carr's new documentary includes only a couple clips from the vintage piece. It's not a great work of art, but it's a notable loss and would have made a good contrast with the new documentary. In addition, the new making-of documentary is about 24 minutes shorter than the old one. Also missing are the audio-only features--the interviews, the radio programs, the Ernest Lehman spotlight--and the historical still gallery examining the history of Salzburg and the film. Granted, this material probably got the least play of any of the old features, but completists might want to hold onto their old discs for it. It would have also been nice to have screen tests other than Farrow's. Tests for all the children and for Christopher Plummer (including singing in his own voice before he was dubbed for the film) were included on Hollywood Screen Tests and Rodgers and Hammerstein: The Sound of Movies. Again, they're not critical but it would have been nice to have them all in one place. So maybe the 40th Anniversary Edition isn't the complete package on The Sound of Music, but it's the most satisfying edition yet, with enough new material to please even the veteran SoM DVD watcher. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars The Sound of Music.......2007-07-02

Shot in pristine color on location near Salzburg--and featuring that dizzying opening shot of Maria belting out the title tune from a verdant hilltop--"Music" fully deserves its reputation as one of the most popular films of all time. The daisy-fresh Andrews is simply terrific, whether she's acting or singing, and the songs--"Do Re Mi," "Climb Every Mountain," and "My Favorite Things"--have become part of our cultural heritage. Adapted from the Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway play, the film might be a bit schmaltzy at moments, but in all, it remains utterly irresistible. The hills are still alive--and your singing pipes will be too--with the wondrous "Sound of Music."

5 out of 5 stars the magic is alive..........2007-06-26

I was only six but I still remember when my mother took us kids to the movies to see 'The Sound of Music'. A memory permantly ingrained as is this film. From the most amazing opening shot ever filmed this classic film never lets go of yor senses. It's fun, thrilling and holds up extremely well. Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer are exquisite. Sure some of the lyrics are corny and simple but it all works and I'm not even a fan of musicals.

    5 out of 5 stars Pure Magic.......2007-06-25

Who doesn't know the general plot of this movie? Well just in case: Maria is thinking of becoming a nun, yet Sister Superior isn't so sure about that and sends her off to become the governess to seven Von Trapp children. There she meets the very strict father and the not so angelic children. She quickly wins over the children and their father. While all this is going on the Nazis are slowly but surely taking over the country. By the second half of the movie they become a true family and decide to make a dareing escape from the Nazis.

Now that pretty much wraps it up plot wise, yet there is so much more. The songs are very sugar coated but so what? They are there for a purpose: teaching children to not be afraid, coaching them on how to sing, etc. In most parts they are there for the pleasure of the young and the young at heart.

I'll close with an example. I was driving with my wife and our girls in the car, and we were looking at about an hour trip to my mother's house so we popped The Sound of Music in the DVD and we were on our way. As I heard (I coudn't see the movie of course) the movie and we sang the songs on our journey, I looked back and every face was smiling. Now if you are looking for a movie like that you've come to the right place.

5 out of 5 stars The Sound of Music .......2007-06-11

A Family Night is made of... Sound of Music. Worth watching over and over.

5 out of 5 stars saw it as a child and now at my 40s.. it still holds the magic.......2007-06-05

This review is about the movie and not the DVD Product-

I saw it yesterday, Im 43, last time I saw ir I was 28 and prior to that I was 12 the first time I saw it. It still holds the magic, and now I can say its a classic for all the family.

Yes, now I see details I previously did no see. The plot is so idillic that you don't feel the nazi presence inspiring fear, the love scenes are a perfect example of puritanism and political correctness. Yet there is love and there Julie Andrews gives a performance larger than life to captivate all public.

I do not know why in the review preface there is some critisims of the lyrics of the song "Sound of music"- those were elaborated lyrics and none of that senseless rap or overly simplistic lyrics. Sugarcoated? You bet, but just like the pinl lemonade they were sipping on the terrace, "its not too sweet, not too acid, its just too pink "

The movie has an ending that is rather sudden, just as it starts with that glorious song it should have ended with one as well, a triumph song. I still have the same feeling I did when I was 12, what happened to them?

Kenneth Branagh's four-hour production of Shakespeare's full text for Hamlet is visually lush (shot in 70mm, which is rarely done) and full of fascinating story moments that normally get cut from shorter stage versions. (Your idea of what kind of fellow Polonius is may change quite a bit.) The unexpurgated approach is truly enlightening, and Branagh intermittently succeeds at giving familiar moments in the drama an original cinematic spin, including Hamlet's spooky confrontation with his father's ghost (Brian Blessed). (Branagh also imposes some Hollywood glitter on the proceedings by casting the likes of Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, Charlton Heston, and Jack Lemmon in the smaller parts.) The pre-Titanic Kate Winslet is very good as the doomed Ophelia, and Derek Jacobi delivers a wonderfully nuanced performance as Claudius, whose character is definitely filled out by the restored material. Branagh's own performance is a little revisionist--some viewers have quibbled with it while others seem fine with it. --Tom Keogh

    4 out of 5 stars Prepare thyself.......2007-06-25

OK...let me get my complaints outta the way, the things that make this film loose a star, first and foremost. After all, it's only my opinion.

I hate the way the Ghost is handled. Too literal...too much is shown. I prefer Zeff's take on the ghost to anyone's. Now that was creepy. This isn't. Also, Branagh has the WORST taste in music in all of Europe. It's embarrassing.

But this is a Hamlet to be seen. It's like no other. Yes, yes...the actors are fantastic, and it is beautiful to behold, like other Hamlets. Branagh's special device... and self challenge for which I applaud him, is to do the entire play. Every word. The whole shebang. In a world where even ABT is editing down their great works of 19th century entertainment, so it won't last longer than your average film I guess, this film is refreshing.

One must prepare for it. It's like going to see Wagner's "Ring" or a Eugene O'Neill play.... you know it's going to be long and intricate. You may become bored at times, but you must know you won't be for long before things pick up again, and paying attention has great rewards. Resolve yourself to meet it halfway. Also, like a Wagner opera, you must accept it for what it is, warts and all. Like a Bach Passion, or a Beethoven string quartet, it is a universe of its own. It is full of nooks and crannies. It is a complete world.

This is the great thing about this version of Hamlet. It's not tidied up for modern sensibilities of theatre. It's sprawling and expansive. The threat from Fortinbras and the entire "players" scene and the scenes on the ship to England....these tentacles from the main plot only add to the complete world of "Hamlet". It's wonderful! It puts it on par with "Lear" [which I've always though better]. It is epic. Art! With a capital "A".

5 out of 5 stars One of the best presentation of a Shakespeare play.......2007-06-22

I had the opportunity to see this film during limited premiere back in December 25, 1996. I still have the program from that time. The 3 theatres to have the honors were The Paris Theatre in New York, The Royal Theatre in Los Angeles and The York Theatre in Toronto. These theatre showed the film in its entirety with one intermission of about 10 minutes. When it went nationwide the following January 24, 1997, it was edited and shorten by about 1 hour.

I must say, watching it for the first time was exciting. The film was amazing and I was intrigue throughout. Keep in mind I was still a young high school student when I first saw this. I enjoyed every aspect of it and did not want to see it end. When the film was first released on DVD or LD, I rented it and it was still good but there is nothing like experiencing it at the theatre and presented the way it was meant to be seen.

    5 out of 5 stars The Full-length Hamlet..........2007-06-10

1997's "William Shakespeare's Hamlet" is a full-length production of the original play, running to a daunting but entirely worthwhile four hours.

Kenneth Branagh, veteran of earlier screen productions of "Henry V" and "Much Ado About Nothing", is entirely credible as the melancholy Prince of Denmark, suspecting subterfuge in his father's murder and his mother's rapid remarriage. His delivery of Hamlet's signature sililoquy in a hall of mirrors is his own but excellent. The length of the production allows for a full exploration of Hamlet's behavior and of his plan for revenge; Branagh deserves credit for sustaining the ambiguity of his character throughout. His energy drives what might otherwise have become an exhausting movie, which even includes the timely arrival of the Norwegian Army at the end of the climactic sword fight between Hamlet and Ophelia's brother.

Branagh is supported by an absolutely stellar cast of "name" actors and actresses, including Kate Winslet as the unfortunate Ophelia. Noticing actors like Robin Williams and Jack Lemon in their minor roles becomes almost a little distracting as the movie progresses.

The length of the movie allows for the close exploration of the lavish sets; Blenheim Palace in England stands in for the Elsinore of the play. Period costumes and furnishings are detailed and everywhere in evidence.

This movie is most highly recommended to fans of Shakespeare and of Hamlet, who will be rewarded with an entertaining and quality effort for the investment of time.

2 out of 5 stars Where Are The Grace Notes?.......2007-05-24

I know I'm going to catch hell for this review, but I've tried to watch Branagh's Hamlet twice and quit half way through both times. This is not meant pejoratively, but Branagh's Hamlet is an assault on the senses. He brays and he mews and he mugs for the camera. Where are the grace notes? How can the Dane be such an unsympathetic character? Winslet's Ophelia is a raving hysteric, Polonius a caricature of a hypocrite, Lemmon woefully miscast, his line readings leaden. The soundtrack, always intrusive, at time overwhelms the dialogue. Bigger is not necessarily better. Give me Olivier, even Gibson, any day.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-05-21

Though quite lengthy, this version of Hamlet is amazing. Kenneth Branah does a wonderful job acting as Hamlet and Kate Winslet's performance of Olivia is equally appealing. This age old story of trechery, pride, and revenge comes to life in this movie and I would reccomend it to anyone.

The Celestine Prophecy is an action-adventure adaptation of the hit novel by James Redfield, a film that moves so swiftly it can be difficult at times to absorb the New Age philosophy tucked into Redfield's multiple, so-called Insights. Matthew Settle plays an American history teacher who travels to Peru to look into the discovery of an ancient manuscript that foretells the arrival of a new spirituality. The Peruvian government and Catholic church, threatened by something that might supplant traditional religion and mainstream values, harass and arrest the scientists and enlightened souls who discovered the manuscript. Our hero becomes involved in a dangerous effort to keep the document from official hands; along the way, he's introduced to the prophecy's major principles, which arouse his dormant spiritual abilities. Annabeth Gish, Hector Elizondo, and Jurgen Prochnow are a welcome presence in this light and sometimes confusing, if casually engaging work that requires repeat viewings to fully hear its interesting message. --Tom Keogh

    5 out of 5 stars It's No Accident..........2007-06-23

It's no accident that the whole Celestine Adventure gets rolling for protagonist John Woodson after he receives news he's being laid off from his high school teaching position due to faculty budget cuts. Indeed, the primary premise of the Celestine Prophecy, both the book and the movie, is that we are all being called to "open up" to the Larger Reality of life, but to do this we first have to "let go" of our material preoccupations in order to experience the ultimate spiritual truth of existence.

It's also no accident that the film came out when it did, in 2006, and that in 2007 the American economy begins its terminal downtrend toward complete systemic collapse. Synchronicity you say? Well of course! We are now about to live the Insights from start to finish (or something quite similar) on a collective scale. But there isn't much time left. In fact, if you follow the Mayan Calendar, you know 2012 is the year when "time" runs out! All this simply confirms the film's main premise: that we aren't in control of our lives as we thought we were, but that Something else most assuredly is, and is moving us toward some kind of Divine Consummation in very short order, provided we stay awake and "in the flow" of things.

Think it's an accident that you came to this site and read this review? Think again! Better yet, go beyond thinking altogether and get the movie. It's no accident, I assure you..:-)

    4 out of 5 stars Must see.......2007-06-11

Must see for those interested in opening their awareness of what's really going on with and between people that would have us compete, rather than being close and working with each other for the good of all.

Puts what many are already trying to achieve on the planet in a relatively simple form to assist us to become more aware of the possibilities and gifts available for all.

Looking forward to the next in the series of James Redfield's Celestine visions.

4 out of 5 stars not quite as good as the book.......2007-06-08

but very engaging and attention holding. I enjoyed it very much but I AM glad I read the book first. Helped a lot with understanding.

4 out of 5 stars As good as the book, uh, not really.......2007-05-28

As far as how the product arrived, the shipping process etc, it was all good. As far as the product itself, has a lot of good actors for an underground kind of movie. Helped explain many concepts in the book and captured the essence of the Celestine Prophecy completely. Seeing auras portrayed so clearly comes off as a little unbelievable, though.

5 out of 5 stars Short and sweet.......2007-05-28

Missed a lot of info from the book, But got the point in the movie. It was very well done, show all your friends, Can't wait till they make another movie on other parts of the book.

In the dirtiest, funniest, most scandalous gay-teen-sex-comedy-parody ever, four gay friends make a pact to lose their virginity by the end of the summer. But that's easier said than done, as the boys face giant sex toys, naked celebrities, masochistic teachers and an uncontrollable romance with a quiche. With a dozen jokes a minute and who's who of gay celebrities. Another Gay Movie is a candy-colored romp where getting laid is all that matters!

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars a real let down.......2007-06-10

This was supposed to be the gay American Pie, unfortunately it tries so hard it just isn't funny. The few briefs moments of humour were great but the film just wasn't consistent. The blind girl was unecessary, Muffler was way over the top and if supposed to be real she was way too scarey and would be unlikely to be friends with the boys in the film especially characters such as Nico and Nicos Mum having her brief moment as a parody of Debbie from Queer as Folk was just pointless.
American Pie was a real parody of the angst young people go through in having sex for the first time and yes I know it was about straight boys and it is so much easier for them but this film without much humour failed to get across any message. I did however love the fact the main characters could be so openly gay at school without any grief. If only the real world was the same.

5 out of 5 stars Faaagulously funny movie!.......2007-06-09

This movie is a riot! But you have to like the genre, e.g. American Pie, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Porky's, etc. This movie takes all those teen spoof movies (which often suffered from homophobic undertones) and adds a gay twist. But not in a preachy way. There are some hilarious scenes in the movie (teacher seduction; Nico's date with Matthew Rush;) and many more. Young or old (I'm a 42 year old fag), if you've got a light, gay heart that doesn't take the world too seriously - and loves self-referential movies - this movie is for you!

    4 out of 5 stars Very funny!.......2007-05-31

I mean what were u expecting about this movie? a Fellini piece of art? duh. It's just a parody of teenage movies in general but with a twist from the gay point of view. It's hilarious, irreverent and fairly well acted and that should be enough for a light comedy like it.

    2 out of 5 stars A very disappointing movie........2007-05-22

I was really hoping that this movie would be a truly funny movie dealing with gay issues. However, in my opinion it was a movie that was very closely modelled on the movie "American Pie", but a lot less funny. Substituting a Quiche Lorraine instead of an Apple Pie, four gay guys instead of four straight ones, someones grandfather instead of Stifler's Mother and a overly loud lesbian instead of 'the Sherminator' does not make this movie all that different from "American Pie'. I am surprised the makers of this film havent been slapped with a copyright lawsuit. Most roles feed on gay stereotypes and are over-acted to the level of being annoying rather than likeable. Yes, this movie is meant to be a spoof, but its lack of originality severely hampers this aim. Surely the gay film community is capable of a movie with more originality and imagination than this one.

4 out of 5 stars I'll Never Look at Produce the Sam Way Again.......2007-05-22

Although the edits could be better and feel of the production is cheap, this movie is the perfect send-up of all things teen AND all things gay! If you are not gay, you may find this offensive, if you are gay, you may find this offensive. Therein lies the entertainment value of this quirky comedy.

Most people didn't mind Gwyneth Paltrow's English accent in this charming, 1996 adaptation of Jane Austen's novel (which also inspired Clueless). But even if it doesn't sound quite right to you, there are plenty of authentic and wonderful Brit thespians in this film by screenwriter-turned-director Douglas McGrath (co-author of Woody Allen's Bullets Over Broadway), including Juliet Stevenson (Truly Madly Deeply), Alan Cumming (Buddy), Phyllida Law (Much Ado About Nothing), Ewan McGregor (the Scots star of Trainspotting), and Sophie Thompson, outstanding and finally heartbreaking as the chattering Miss Bates. Paltrow plays Austen's benign busybody, Emma Woodhouse--so busy trying to arrange the lives of others that she is sidestepping her own. McGrath brings a kind of pretty and light touch to the production, his best move the wise delegation of creative authority to the actors themselves. --Tom Keogh

    Description

This delightfully fun and lighthearted comedy is based on the story that inspired the hit movie CLUELESS! Dazzling Gwyneth Paltrow (SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS) shines as EMMA, a mischievous young beauty who sets up her single friends. Funny thing is ... she's not very good at it! So when Emma tries to find a man for Harriet (Toni Collette -- THE SIXTH SENSE, ABOUT A BOY), she makes a hilariously tangled mess of everyone's lives. You'll enjoy all the comic confusion ... until Emma herself falls in love, finally freeing everyone from her outrageously misguided attempts at matchmaking.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Another great production of a 19th century novel!.......2007-06-30

The story may vary greatly from what the book was intended to express but I liked the premise of the movie. I have never read the book. However, it doesn't matter. The movie is what the movie is.

The poor little rich girl has nothing left to do after her governess gets married but to try to "repeat" her success at match making by hooking up the parson with a local girl. The whole thing backfires miserably, and Emma nearly loses her true and best friend in the process.

There is so much in human nature and the nature of females during this time period that are still characteristic of women today. (Even though we have come a long way) I think the screenplay writers thought that it would be better to express the more positive sides of busy bodies given from the male perspective. Then one could understand the reasons why Mr. Knightly came to adore Emma.

The story was humorous and well written and the actors were all obviously selected to compliment one another. I loved Gwyenth Paltrow in this part and think she made an incredible character with or without any help from the "Emma" in Jane Austen's book.

    5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Movie.......2007-06-25

I found this version of Emma to be more enjoyable than the A&E production. I found the characters to be more charming and distinctive in their roles, especially that of Mr. Knightly. I enjoyed the subtle humor of this version. I think it deserves a higher overall rating.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Best Jane Austen movie.......2007-05-19

The movie renditions of "Sense and Sensibility" and of "Persuasion" and the BBC version of "Pride and Prejudice" are the best of this sort of thing. This movie comes in behind those, even though I think it's the most compelling of Jane Austen's stories. "Emma" is a novel with great moral significance because it is about everyone's inner secret belief in his own importance and infallibility. And Gweneth Paltrow is pretty good. She has a limited range of expression and ability to become someone else however and this combined with the failure of the writers and director to find the essence of the novel led to its being more of a costume romp than a good story. It's a very pretty movie and Gweneth Paltrow is an interesting looking, pretty woman. She was the prettiest woman in the film. Nor was she forced to stand in shadows created by the other actors' superior acting, except in the scenes with Toni Collette, who is a superb Harriet Smith.

All of which is to say that "Clueless" was a much more entertaining and even more meaningful "Emma" than this "Emma" was.

    5 out of 5 stars adorable movie.......2007-05-19

My favorite role for Gwyneth Paltrow. It's the original storyline for "Clueless". It's so cute and clever! My favorite line is:

Mr Knightly says "Why didn't you ask me to submit a riddle." and Emma replies "Your entire personality is a riddle. I thought you overqualified."

5 out of 5 stars Funny and beautiful!.......2007-05-15

This was my first introduction to anything Jane Austen... It is funny, beautiful to watch, the character's are honest. I can truly thank this movie for peeking my interest in the genre. It's light enough to entertain. But with enough meat to make you think.

When a mail-order apprentice witch (Angela Lansbury) is saddled with three sibling refugees from London during World War II, the outlook is grim. But the kids soon discover her secret and sign on for adventure in the name of England. With the aid of a magical bed, they track down her fraudulent headmaster (David Tomlinson) to find the spell that will aid the Allies. Fascinated that she has actually achieved results with his lessons, he joins forces. The quintet does battle with corrupt booksellers, animated-lion royalty, and, eventually, invading Germans. Songs include Lansbury's Oscar-nominated "The Age of Not Believing." This film is often compared to director Robert Stevenson's earlier effort, Mary Poppins, and for good reason. In addition to Tomlinson, the movies share a fondness for magic at the hands of a good woman, light romance with an understanding male, and wide-eyed children. Stevenson also graces both films with interaction between humans and animated animals. Disney is wise to play up that aspect on its box this time around as both the underwater ball and the subsequent island soccer match are the most visually interesting and appealing parts of the film. Adults may find the 1971-vintage mixing of actors and animation a bit creaky, but kids used to a variety of animation quality will find the action a hoot. Ages 4 and up. The movie has been recut several times but was restored to the original length of 139 minutes for its 30th anniversary in 2001. --Kimberly Heinrichs

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Disney Films Ever!!!.......2007-07-01

This is one of the best disney films I have ever seen before! Angela Lansbury and the other actors did a excellent job in Bedknobs and Broomsticks. I cannot stop watching this movie. It is filled with so much delight and warmth. It's funny and magical.

    5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2007-05-13

I have seen the original movie release and this is the elongated version. It has scenes in it that ended up being cut for the theaters. I have always enjoyed this movie, but the elongated one is much more enjoyable

4 out of 5 stars Fun fun fun!.......2007-05-10

I watched this for the first time the other day. It was pure fun. Such a great movie, felt like a wonderful escape from the real world. Funny, enjoyable and so original. I loved it, I can't believe I had never watched it!

5 out of 5 stars Bedknobs and Broomsticks.......2007-05-10

Adding to my collection of Disney and upgrading at the same time.

    5 out of 5 stars A must-see!!!.......2007-04-10

I've always loved this movie...it's so imaginative, and the songs are lovely. I love the character of Eglantine Price, and Angela Landsbury does a wonderful job playing her. Two of the actors from Mary Poppins are also in this movie, playing Eglantine's correspondence school teacher Mr. Brown and one of the children. It's a great, great movie - one that parents will enjoy watching with their children. And the song "Portobello Road" will stick in your head for ages.

The last film completed by Bruce Lee before his untimely death, Enter the Dragon was his entrée into Hollywood. The American-Hong Kong coproduction, shot in Asia by American director Robert Clouse, stars Lee as a British agent sent to infiltrate the criminal empire of bloodthirsty Asian crime lord Han (Shih Kien) through his annual international martial arts tournament. Lee spends his days taking on tournament combatants and nights breaking into the heavily guarded underground fortress, kicking the living tar out of anyone who stands in his way. The mix of kung fu fighting (choreographed by Lee himself) and James Bond intrigue (the plot has more than a passing resemblance to Dr. No) is pulpy by any standard, but the generous budget and talented cast of world-class martial artists puts this film in a category well above Lee's primitive Hong Kong productions. Unfortunately he's off the screen for large chunks of time as American maverick competitors (and champion martial artists) John Saxon and Jim Kelly take center stage, but once the fighting starts Lee takes over. The tournament setting provides an ample display of martial arts mastery of many styles and climaxes with a huge free-for-all, but the highlight is Lee's brutal one-on-one with the claw-fisted Han in the dynamic hall-of-mirrors battle. Lee narrows his eyes and tenses into a wiry force of sinew, speed, and ruthless determination. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars His 4th and last film.......2007-04-17

Well, this movie had a profound impact on me. I discovered Bruce Lee shortly after his death, and then he became my childhood hero. Yes, I had all the posters and all the books. I even studied Wing Chun as an adolescent, just like he did. Speaking of which, it is amazing to me that until his last breath he never really abandoned that style of fighting, despite all his experimentation and despite founding Jeet Kune Do. Leaving aside the opening scene in which he mostly adopts Mui Thai (Kickboxing), and with remarkable prescience, Ultimate Fighting type mixed martial arts, the rest of the film in terms of his hand fighting is strictly Wing Chun: all the trapping hands and short, precise, practical movements and techniques are virtually 100% Wing Chun.

Now, was this Bruce Lee's best film? Well, in some ways in terms of production value it was. But if you pay close attention to Fists of Fury (also known as The Chinese Connection), and Return of the Dragon, you'll find that the production value of those two weren't that far behind ETD, and in some cases was better. Production wise, nothing in ETD can compare with the battle with Chuck Norris in the Coliseum in the climactic scene from Return of the Dragon. Similarly, in Fists of Fury, the battle in the Japanese Karate dojo along with the fight against the big European towards the end are as good, if not better than anything in Enter the Dragon. The one poorly produced film made by Bruce Lee would be The Big Boss, his first on his return to Hong Kong. Although, that too had some scintillating and spectacular fight scenes.

In terms of Bruce Lee himself, I'm afraid to say he was past his prime at this juncture. Remarkable, powerful and masterful yes, but somewhat past the prime he demonstrated in his earlier films. Martial Arts, in the end, is an athletic endeavor, and athletes generally reach their prime in their mid to late 20s and pass it as they approach 30 and beyond. And, of course, Bruce Lee was under an extreme amount of pressure. This would be his make or break film. If it failed he would be finished in Hollywood, if it succeeded he would finally take his place among the Hollywood elite whom he alternately admired, envied and detested. In addition to that, there were guys coming out of the woodwork wanting to fight him and claim the singular distinction of being the one guy who kicked Bruce Lee's butt. When he couldn't avoid it, he actually had a couple of real fights on set during the making of this film, and he didn't dissapoint. There was no fancy stuff, his opponents were quickly and ruthlessly dispatched. Had he lost any of those fights his career would be over.

All in all this film is a classic. It has some of the most brutal and beautiful hand to hand fight sequences ever committed to film. The battles are at once fantastical and savagely realistic. There is a minimum of fakery here, which at the time was the hallmark of Kung fu movies. And while Bruce Lee would always add fancy kicking to his film repertoire, many of his techniques here are in fact practical and commonsensical, and would work on the street if executed by a decent fighter.

Enter the Dragon is the only Bruce Lee film in which we hear his real voice. And it was finally the big budget, relatively carefully made Kung-fu movie everyone was clamoring for. But the greatest compliment I can pay this film is that after having watched it dozens of times over the last 30+ years, I can still watch it over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars The man the myth, the legend........2007-04-02

Bruce Lee was a cult figure/phenomenon that may never be explained, a martial artist, a philosopher, a movie star. This movie I have always thought was his finest effort and showed the more thoughtful introspective side. The original scene with the shaolin, priest was cut out but it really gives you some of his thoughts on Zen and Fighting. Its great that it was put back in. I have to agree with others that in this movie Bruce was beginning to look sick and may have been slowly dying, his face was drawn and he was carrying to little body fat. The speed and power was evident and this is a great movie with a great story.

    5 out of 5 stars bruce lee's best...........2007-03-19

i have a lot of bruce lee's work but this is his finest hour... the plot and the movie have the best script and the supporting actors are very good... it also had the best cinematology, great locations... excellent dvd with bruce lee at his best in all categories!!!

5 out of 5 stars ONLY 170 PEOPLE REVIEW THIS?????????.......2007-03-14

This is Bruce Lee at his best, he really shows how fast(scary fast)he is
The only sad thing about this movie is you can see(WELL DIE HARD LEE FANS ANYWAY) that the man was slowly dying. Bruce looks thin(still muscular
though) but very thin if you compare him to his other films,he had already
had a fainting spell prior or during filming of this masterpiece and sadly
it was just a matter of time. Still if he was not the man he was by not
relaxing and shutting his engine off so to speak we really would not be
celebrating him today,no by him pushing himself beyond the limits he has
shown the world that when you have speed, technique, skill and power, you
really can beat any man one on one.

5 out of 5 stars The Classic Bruce Lee Movie.......2007-03-12

Long-time fans of Bruce Lee are well-aware of this two-disc DVD set, which captures Bruce Lee's restored "Enter The Dragon" along with an interesting collection of extra featurettes. For those who are not long-time Bruce Lee fans, "Enter The Dragon" was his first movie made to Hollywood production standards, and unfortunately his last (he died unexpectedly just prior to the release of the movie).

The storyline, featuring Lee infiltrating a martial arts tournament sponsored by a Chinese criminal warlord in Hong Kong, is pulp fiction at its best. It provides a series of opportunities for fights, with short intervals of expository dialogue. The characters are lightly drawn from popular fiction and stereotypes; only the handful of lead characters get any real development as people.

The real draw of the movie when it was released in 1971 were the dramatic martial arts action sequences. Lee choreographed the fight scenes, which feature himself and a number of other experienced martial artists, along with "real" actor John Saxon (who had enough martial arts training to look respectable in his fights). This movie spawned several generations of martial arts movies in Hollywood, but none have ever quite surpassed the performances in "Enter The Dragon", which rely on no special effects other than the rare use of slow-motion.

The director and producer's voice-over commentary is worth listening to; "Enter The Dragon" was accomplished on something of a shoe-string with respect to production in Hong Kong. Several of the supporting actors were literally walk-ons or support personnel asked to play a role. This reviewer was surprised to find out that the principal villian did not speak English and literally phonetically memorized and delivered whole chunks of menancing dialogue.

This DVD set is highly recommended to fans of Bruce Lee and to those looking for an excellent introduction to the genre of martial arts movies.

Kid safety is an important, yet often difficult topic of discussion between parents and children. The Safe Side's "Safe Side Super-Chick" is a decidedly zany host who successfully combines slapstick humor with serious, practical safety tips for kids. "Safe Side Super-Chick" breaks the population down into three quickly discernable categories: "Safe Side Adults" that kids know well and can always trust to keep them safe, "Don't Knows" like the mail carrier or the lady at the park and "Sorta Knows" like a coach or a schoolmate's parent. As "Safe Side Super-Chick" interacts with "Don't Knows" and "Sorta Knows", she offers seven specific safety tips to keep kids safe and, with the help of real kids, details simple, concrete actions and phrases that empower kids in a variety of potentially dangerous situations. Best of all, the presentation is never scary, but always extremely funny--that means that kids ages 2 to 10 will actually enjoy learning about safety. Kudos to Julie Clark (creator of Baby Einstein) and John Walsh (host of America's Most Wanted) for creating a safety video that's highly entertaining, informative, and practical. --Tami Horiuchi

    Description

A message from John Walsh: I'm the host of a television show that I wish wasn't needed. But it is. Thankfully, 38 missing children have been recovered by our work at "America's Most Wanted." In 1981, the lives of my wife Reve and I were changed forever. Our beautiful son Adam was abducted from a mall in a nice area of South Florida. Sadly, two weeks into the biggest search for a child ever in Florida, our son was found murdered. In my quest to find justice and fight back for victims, I lobbied Congress to change the laws and to change how police search for missing children. I'm proud to say that the movement I started is still going strong. There's a national organization dedicated to helping children (National Center for Missing and Exploited Children) and now this country and its media are beginning to understand that our children need to be informed about how to stay safe. In 1981 not much was known about child abduction and exploitation. Parents knew very little and, tragically, children knew even less. Today we're proud of the awareness that children have about the dangers that face them. Children see images everywhere of kidnappings and exploitation. We only need to think about what we've seen in the past year--pedophiles in the clergy, Internet predators, and others who are in positions to take advantage of children's trust in them--to know that kids are still being victimized at an alarming rate. I hope that's about to change. As a crime fighter and host of a popular TV program that has saved lives, I'm proud to be teaming up with a woman who knows how to teach children. Kids want to know what to do, and parents need to be prepared. Like me, Julie Clark is a parent who cares. She has a proven track record of teaching kids. Her passion and experience make this series of safety videos for children something that parents and kids will want to watch. Now parents and kids will do what I've been doing for more than 23 years--they'll fight back.

1 out of 5 stars Not for my family.......2007-06-29

While the overall content is fine - the presentation was terrible. The girl acted like a lunatic (and a very messy one) most of the time, managing to get food all over her face every time she ate anything - GROSS. It may help with strangers, but it's stone age manners. My girls (10 and 12) did laugh once in a while and watch the whole thing, but I didn't have to tell them twice to put it back in the library bag to return it. I'm Very Glad I didn't buy it! The 2yo cried and ran from the room! And they have no desire to check it out a second time.

    5 out of 5 stars Suprisingly entertaining.......2007-06-28

I didn't know what to expect with this video. I was told it was pretty good, but really, how can a video about safety keep the kids entertained? This one did. The main character is awesome and zippy and the video moves at a quick pace while keeping things simple. They go back over points and reinforce definitions. My three year old understood it, and asked to watch it two more times. And he isn't a good movie watcher. He wants to watch things about cars or explosions and this held his interest.

5 out of 5 stars Great Way to Teach Your Kids About Stranger Safety.......2007-06-15

We bought this on the recommendation of a friend, and we are very happy with this purchase. The video is really goofy and fun - perfect format to hold our kids' attention. It delivers the important stuff in a fun, repetitive way so it sticks in our kids' minds. They are now openly repeating the video, stating "Grandma is my Safe Side Adult" or "That man over there is a Don't Know." The actor in this video is really talented - I'm surprised she doesn't have her own show (maybe she does?) because she could give The Wiggles, etc. a run for their money.

5 out of 5 stars My son learned A LOT from this CD........2007-06-14

I noticed my son, who's 5, loved to talk to people wherever we would go anywhere. I felt that he had no awareness of the danger of strangers. I bought this DVD and WOW my son "got it" right away. He now asks if its ok to talk to anyone and guides his little sister to do the same. This DVD is a must have for safety reasons. It's fun too!

    5 out of 5 stars Safety Simplified.......2007-06-13

I encourage families of children and teens of all ages to view this video. It provides excellent tips on how to stay safe. The safety concept in this video is clear for all ages to learn and become aware of his/her surroundings.

As Murder, She Wrote saunters through its sixth (of an eventual 12) season, star Angela Lansbury maintains her eternally buoyant and inquisitive air as Jessica Fletcher, professional writer and amateur sleuth. Though Jessica continued to investigate murders in her home town of Cabot Cove and elsewhere (in the worlds of high finance, opera, and voodoo, among other settings), this season began the practice of guest detective episodes, introduced by Jessica as either a story she wrote or a tale told by a friend, but starring a variety of quirky investigators: An ex-football player (Ken Howard, The White Shadow) paired with a clever poodle; a television crime-show producer who solved crime in real life (Diana Canova, Soap); a stout Irish detective (longtime character actor Pat Hingle); an abrasive homicide cop (Barry Newman, Vanishing Point); as well as recurring Murder, She Wrote characters like former jewel thief Dennis Stanton (Keith Michell) and British secret agent Michael Haggerty (Len Cariou). The producers were obviously hoping to use Murder, She Wrote's popularity to spin-off new seri
