Pitting kids against grown-ups has always been a reliable source of comedy, and Big Fat Liar indulges the "smart kid vs. dumb adult" fantasy with infectious enthusiasm. In this case it's Frankie Muniz from TV's Malcolm in the Middle, playing a Michigan eighth-grader whose penchant for lying results in parental scorn when he claims that a Hollywood movie mogul (ace character actor Paul Giamatti) has stolen the kid's hastily written English essay and turned it into his upcoming summer blockbuster. The kid only wants to prove his honesty and recruits his girlfriend (spunky TV star Amanda Bynes) to beat the honcho on his Hollywood turf. Elaborate practical jokes and slapstick gags turn this kid stuff (scripted and produced by two former child stars) into an enjoyable send-up of Hollywood absurdity. When combined with Giamatti's mastery of slow-burning megalomania, the show-biz in-jokes and Home Alone-style anarchy make this a harmless diversion for the young and young-at-heart. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Glad they had my movie.......2007-05-15

I had been looking for this movie for months and it came right up. I have watched the movie at least 5 times since reciving it. It was brand new like they promised. I have been nothing but happy.

5 out of 5 stars funny..........2007-05-04

Sweet revenge was never so much fun! It is the perfect tale of "what goes around, comes around!" Paul Giamatti is a funny actor and pulls this one off in excellence. A movie for the family!

5 out of 5 stars The Blue Man.......2007-03-20

My daugther loves this movie and watches it over and over again. Very good clean humor.

3 out of 5 stars Not a blockbuster hit but watchable.......2007-01-04

I bought the DVD of this movie a long time after its release, after hearing how awesome it was. It was cute and funny and all that but I don't think it was anything very special. It seemed to me like it was not Frankie Muniz's best work. He was loads better in the agent cody bank movies. Still, it's a fun family movie and kids from the ages of 5 to 10 will like it.

2 out of 5 stars Big Fat Nothing.......2006-09-11

Take some talented actors and put them in an age old story of smart kids versus dumb adults and you get more of the same. Really, is this the type of movie we want to pawn off on our kids? They deserve better.

The key point of this movie is that lying is bad. Good point. A device used to bring out the truth is creative pranks. Also good. Unfortunately, the pranks fall flat as they are totally implausible (even kids will have a hard time believing a man can't tell he's been dyed blue until he looks in the mirror), and since they are the device used to bring the movie to its conclusion, the entire thing falls flat.

Making films for children is a fine thing. They shouldn't be dumbed down or even given an uncritical eye just because they are for children, however. Quite honestly, I'd rather have a kid watch something like "Good Will Hunting" before this.

Don't waste your children's time with this film. Read them a book ... a good book ... instead.

3 out of 5 stars Confusing.......2007-06-16

I bought this DVD for to try something different. I figured Denise Austin has been around for years, I'll give her a try. I have quite a few home work out videos, so I'm not new to them. The toning section is pretty good on this DVD. I enjoyed it and I felt it.

HOWEVER, the cardio section was jumpy to say the least. She's all over the place and SUPER HYPER. I couldn't help but wonder, what kind of drugs is this woman on??? By the time I figured out what she was doing she was moving on to something else. Plus, she wasn't always saying when she was changing to a different exercise, which made it even more frustrating. I didn't enjoy it AT ALL. If all this DVD had was the cardio portion, I would throw it in the trash. There are a lot of other fun and easy to follow cardio DVDs out there that work.

Again, the toning section was pretty good. I liked it and it is the type of work out that you can choose how difficult you want to make it by your hold on the resistance band, which I thought was great since some days you don't want to kill yourself, but you want to do something. She should stick to teaching toning routines. She's much better at them.

4 out of 5 stars A little confusing but a good workout........2007-03-16

This workout is split up into different sections but initially I was confused where one segment ended and another began. During the cardio workout she says "this is the stregnth training segment" -or something to that affect-and I thought it was the section separate from the cardio that focused on stregnth training but it wasn't-it was a stregnth training within the cardio chapter. It does eventually get to the stregnthening exercises and it's very clearly divided but I didn't know that initially.
Really, that's my only complaint about this work out. No biggie. I enjoy the exercises themselves. You do need weights (dumbbells) and an exercise strap though. I didn't know that when I bought it so you may want to get those things if you're going to get this cd.
The routines were fairly easy but challenging-not ridiculously challenging though-I'm a beginner and it was just enough for me. I can feel it in my arms and legs and I worked up a good sweat.
I liked how she explains how to do different segments of the cd on different days. Splitting it up makes it a little more digestable for me. Cardio mon, wed, fri and the stregnthening exercises tues and thurs and then on sat you're supposed to do the whole cd.
I'd recommend this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Great Workout.......2007-02-21

I just bought this video (literally the VHS version that comes withOUT the resistance band) & recieved it in the mail & then went out to buy my resistance band which I purchased at walmart for $7, the long version that you can just wrap around your hands to shorten it.

WELL, I must say.. even though I had read the reviews before buying this tape, I had forgotten that it was broken up into segments & so I read the back & it said 25min of cardio, 10 of upper body, 10 lower body & 10 abs, I started the video & followed the workout as best I could, BUT during the cardio I needed to use my inhaler, if you're asthmatic as I am, you may want to have your inhaler handy or take it before you start because the cardio is first & it will get you jumping, your heart will be racing & you will be sweating, trust me you'll feel it.

It then comes to the end where Denise says congratulations .. I THOUGHT I was done.. oooh no, then I saw come up on the screen upperbody.. & I was like.. "WHAT?!!?" so from my reaction of thinking I went through the entire video, you can see this is a fantastic workout, I've never sweated when doing a dvd & this time I did.

What I didn't like.. is that unlike in her OTHER dvds she explains the moves when they're being done.. this for the cardio did not happen .. & so I was struggling trying to figure out what I was supposed to be doing & if I was doing it right, meanwhile I'm missing the workout & just resorted to jumping around & trying to mimic what was being done (even though I still got a great workout from that).

Overall, I DEFINITELY recommend this (I am a beginner & this was intense for me)

4 out of 5 stars Fairly Good Workout.......2007-02-13

I've never worked out with this instructor before, but after seeing this video, I would definitely use her again. I viewed the workout before doing it, and at first, I thought she was a chatterbox, but when I did the workout, her talking really motivated me to keep going. The video is divided into chapters by the type of workout. The cardio portion could stand to be a little bit longer, especially if you're trying to burn fat. The best workouts are the ones for your muscles. If you're looking for a video to sculpt your bottom half and your arms, this is definitely the right video. You will see results only after a few runs of the video. Because this video is really good for muscle toning, it really does boost your metabolism.

5 out of 5 stars Denise Austin "Power Zone".......2007-01-09

Item arrived promptly and in promised condition. A better workout than I ever thought possible. I used this product for nine months and lost weight and became fit, healthy, and confident. Awesome!

4 out of 5 stars Love the videos but hate having to watch a nasty clip in order to watch all.......2007-02-16

I LOVED the videos, and the concert was great if not a bit short (only 60 mins). But imagine my horror when I put the video DVD in my TV/DVD player and between the videos there are some clips of the band doing various things. I was rushing to MUTE the clip that they put in about several of the band members talking about men and gerbils...well use your imagination. Problem is my granddaughter was watching and dancing to the videos...and then the gerbil clip! So I thought, well I would copy the videos onto my hard-drive and make a edited version so I could play it without that clip. BUT NOOOOOO. Not only are you unable to do this...I couldn't even play the videos or concert on my PC DVD without paying for a mpeg decoder cause Microsofts Media player 11 doesn't support MPeg2 which the DVD is recorded in. So I PAID for an Encoder DVD software suite. I was happy I could then watch on my PC and it only cost $99.99. BUT I still can't copy the video clips so I can avoid that gerbil clip. SOOOOOO if you buy the DVD, just don't let your children watch it. Sad cause there is only that 1 clip that is not appropriate for children or even old hippy grandmothers!

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!!!!!!!.......2007-01-25

I first saw the ad for this DVD combo in Roling Stone in Junw 06 and I couldnt wait for it to be released.......I had the VHS copy for years and the quality was terrible.....THIS ROCKS!!! What a song set.......it doesn't get any better than this! I just wish the CD had the same song line-up. BUY THIS!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Kick**s Concert!.......2006-11-11

An excellent concert. it had been 4 o 5 years since I began looking for this and I found it.

5 out of 5 stars we care alot.......2006-10-01

one disc is video and one disc is concert both are fabulous and a must have dvd if you like to watch and listen to rock concerts. I only wish Bono would have made a guest appearance on "We Care Alot" live track. Patton is amazing. I bought the vhs several years ago and for the most part it did not track well at all and there were no videos. There are probably twenty to twenty-five dvd concerts worth getting and this is on the top five

5 out of 5 stars Finally FNM on DVD !!!.......2006-08-30

This DVD is exactly what I've been looking for - the live show from Brixton UK and the music videos - all together and all on DVD! It's about time....now let's work on getting Mr. Bungle on DVD!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great purchase for a fan.......2007-01-25

I got this as one of my husband's stocking stuffers. He's already a big Black Keys fan and he loves to watch music DVDs. He really liked it and seems to enjoy watching it.

4 out of 5 stars If you are a fan, this is a treat.......2006-12-23

I have to disagree with the reviewer who said that the picture on this concert was distracting and that the extras were great. I've watched this DVD a number of times, and I would actually say the exact opposite, and not just to be a contrarian, or to confuse people who haven't seen it yet. I tend to be very fickle about video and sound quality of live performance DVDs, even if I love the band. If you like The Black Keys, primarily their stuff prior to the album Magic Potion, you'll like this DVD [interestingly, it was driving me crazy until I realized that the menu music was a song from Magic Potion that was not in the concert]. Not too much in the way of extras [a short interview, photo montage and two videos], but excellent footage of an excellent band. I wouldn't necessarily say that if you didn't know The Black Keys that this would make you an instant fan, but it is an excellent representation of them in concert with excellent sound quality and picture [not blurry or hectic]. Naturally, I do like The Black Keys, so this is a treat. You get plenty of music for the money too. On a side note, I found a new found respect for Dan's guitar skills. It doesn't even look like he uses a pick to make all that heavy, distorted blues. Excellent band. Excellent video.

4 out of 5 stars The Black Keys do a great dvd.......2006-01-18

I have wanted to go see these guys play in Austin(Texas), the last several times they have played there, but something always comes up and I don't go. That having been said, I really enjoyed this dvd. I am going to have to figure out how to get to Austin the next time they play. They have a lot of energy and they are really into the songs. I would have liked to see more of their blues/blues-rock stuff on it, since most of the stuff on it is rock.
They do a lot with the duo setup. I was wondering how they would play some of the songs since there is overdubbing on parts of the albums. I liked what they did, although I got a little tired of the riff/ fill repetition on the songs, but with two people I am not sure what I expected.

2 out of 5 stars For Die Hard fans only?.......2005-12-25

I was disappointed with this DVD. Other reviewers made it out to be an amazing performance, but I have a feeling they're just sending underseved praise to their favorite band. The performance is mediocre, at best. As a matter of fact, it's clear that the band is holding back, A LOT. Perhaps the guys knew they were being filmed for a live DVD, and took extra care not to mess up any of the songs, but the performance suffers as a result. There's far less intensity in this performance than in other live performances, or even in the CD recordings. Dan doesn't even bother attempting some of the more difficult licks in a lot of the songs. The lighting is also another sore spot on this performance. There's a crazy red tinge to everything that makes it difficult to see the band and almost hurts your eyes after a while.
That said, this DVD does have a lot of nice extras if you're a big fan of the band. There's interviews, music videos, photos, and the sound quality is excellent, but the performance itself is severely lacking in intensity and quality. If you're crazy into the Black Keys you'll probably want to pick this up, but if you're just the average fan, pass this one by.

5 out of 5 stars This DVD is incredible!.......2005-09-09

So I actually own this dvd (which is odd since it doesn't come out til 10/4/05), and it is incredible! It is an absolutely amazing performance. All it needs is a scratch-n-sniff box that smells of smoke and beer and you'd think you were actually there. The video quality is stunning. The audio is unbelievable. Thick raunchy fuzz tones (as one might expect), and of course Patrick brutally assaults his drum kit like some kind of maniac. It is so good, I caught myself wanting to applaude and go nuts after most songs (as if I were actually there). Now I am using a pretty decent home theatre setup w/ a powered sub, so results may vary slightly. But you will surely have your socks rocked off.

I almost forgot to mention, this dvd also has music videos for 10AM Automatic and Set You Free, a great interview with the guys, and a live photo gallery. Oh, and the song that plays during the main menu is really funky and good. I haven't heard it before. Some kind of jam they must have done.

Dan is so "on" with his gee-tar, it makes you sick. Seriously, the guy is so talented. Rock critics are going to go nuts when this dvd hits the streets in October. Patrick kills it on the drums, but Dan is the frontman and his performance really stands out. The stars and planets must have been aligned that night in Australia...

I just want to say thanks to Dan and Patrick for putting out a dvd of such great quality. I have daily cravings for the Black Keys rocked-out-thick-fuzz-goodness, and this dvd more than satisfies them (at least until they come back to Chicago so I can see them live).

The bright cartoon colors of the Saturday morning classic Fat Albert get brought into the real world--or a Hollywood facsimile of reality, at any rate. When a teenage girl named Doris (Kyla Pratt) sheds a tear onto her TV's remote control, her unhappiness summons Fat Albert (Kenan Thompson, Barbershop 2), Mushmouth, Dumb Donald, Old Weird Harold, and the rest of the gang from Bill Cosby's popular cartoon (inspired by his childhood memories of growing up in Philadelphia). Doris is, to say the least, a little freaked out and doesn't really want Fat Albert to help solve her problems--but with the blithe confidence that only cartoon characters can have, Fat Albert and the gang follow her to school to root out the source of her misery. One of the movie's problems (which are legion) is that Doris's world isn't much more real than the cartoon one; it's a sterile, clean-cut caricature of a city neighborhood. In fact, the whole movie feels suspiciously like a commercial for a DVD of Fat Albert cartoons, an advertisement for which actually appears in the movie, making for a bizarrely self-referential product placement. Thompson, surprisingly, hangs on to his dignity in the face of the inane proceedings and even gives Fat Albert a hint of gravitas. --Bret Fetzer

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed with America.......2007-01-08

As I read through the reviews for this film, I found myself in shock! How far america has fallen! For the life of me, I cannot understand how anybody could find a tragic film about a young mans fight against obesity could have humorous value! These people are the same people who laughed about the "Ive fallen and I can't get up!" old woman. PEOPLE- HARDSHIPS ARE NOT HUMOR. CHILDHOOD OBESITY SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN LIGHTYLY!!
That said, I havent seen the movie, but I hear its a real knee slapper. I mean HELLO! Kenan Thompson can do no wrong! I mean, have you seen GOOD BURGER?!?!
Good Burger is based on a skit from the TV series All That on Nickelodeon. The story follows Ed, an employee of Good Burger, home of the Good Burger. They are under serious competition from Mondo Burger (which looks like a giant palace with billions of neon lights, don't ask!!!). The employees at Good Burger have to defend themselves from the chain's onslaught by introducing Ed's recipe for a "secret sauce". ENTER COMEDY GOLD!!!!
So what is there for parents to be concerned about... countless crotch and flatulence jokes and a steady stream of profanity like the pathetic George of the Jungle? You won't find that here, no sir!! Abe Vigoda says the "a" word once to describe his injured buttocks. "S*cks" is also used twice. There is NO other crude language and there is no profanity, the Lord's name in vain or obsceneties. Carmen Electra's character, Roxanne, tries to seduce Ed but he fends her off.
And unlike George, this movie has a few redeeming qualities. As funny as this movie is, it's still grounded in reality. Dexter's dad is a deadbeat and they (Ed and he) discuss the sadness of having no friends. Cheating is put down, the work ethic is encouraged, and the actors aren't bad role models.
On a side note, actors Kenan (19) and Kel (18) both grew up in the church. (Kel is from Chicago and Kenan is from Atlanta). They both have strong relationships with their mothers (as can be learned from the July 26th-August 1st issue of TV Guide, which I adore :-) ).
So do yourself a favor and order a large portion of delicious Good Burger while its still available!

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring Heartwarming Worth It.......2006-12-25

A high school girl has a problem. She feels she is nothing but a loser. The movie starts with her at home, turning on the tv to see her favorite program Fat Albert, and she begins to cry. One of her tears lands on the remote and something magical happens, the tear goes through the screen and becomes a cartoon and lands in front of Fat Albert. Soon there is a portal which comes on the cartoon scene showing the young girl on the other side. Fat Albert dives through the screen and comes to life in the girl's living room. Soon his friends join him and the gang set out to help the girl overcome her low self esteem. But will they be able to help her change? Of course I can't tell you that, you need to see the movie. But what I can tell you is that if you want a movie the whole family can watch without hearing the F-word, this is it. It is amazing how you can make a movie today and not use the F-word and it still succeeds. This movie has a little of everything, suspense, drama, comedy, inspiration, science fiction?, and more. If anyone has a low self worth/feel like they are a loser, let me urge you to purchase this movie as well as the book "The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale, which can also be purchased on Amazon. I too have felt like I was a loser, until God showed me otherwise. If you want a movie that is both inspiring and entertaining for the whole family, you'd be hard pressed to find one better than Fat Albert.

4 out of 5 stars "Gonna Have A Good Time".......2006-10-11

"Fat Albert" is a live-action remake of the 1970s animated series inspired by Bill Cosby, with some new animated footage thrown in. It's a bit goofy, but I have watched it a few times, and quite like it.

Doris (Kyla Pratt) is a Philadelphia teenager with a problem. Well, that's what Fat Albert and his friends think when they come out of the TV, thanks to her tears falling on her remote. She doesn't have many friends, she doesn't get invited to parties, and she's not too good at sports. Fat Albert and the gang, now in the real world, are determined to solve Doris' problems, and follow her to school. Doris is humiliated, having brightly dressed cartoon characters tagging along everywhere she goes, but she'll have to put up with it for a while, the Fat Albert gang can only go back in the TV when their show is on, and that isn't for another day! While their in the real world, Fat Albert falls in love, Mushmouth has a go at rapping, Weird Harold plays basketball, and Dumb Donald learns to read. The real world is a very exciting place, and they get carried away in their new pursuits. Will they get back in the TV before they fade away? Will they solve Doris' problem? And apart from being a cartoon character, why does Fat Albert seem so familiar to Doris?

It's a very colourful film, being a real-life adaption of a cartoon. Also, being a modern remake of an older show, there are a lot of digs at how time has changed (wondering how a can of soft drink works, etc) and the limitations of the characters (Dumb Donald can't take off his hat, and Fat Albert can't take off his red shirt, because there might not be anything there, for instance). There is some banter for the show as well, which is nice. There are a few cameo appearances too, by Bill Cosby ("Who is it?" "Fat Albert!" "Yeah, RIGHT!"), Russel Cosby (in one of the last scenes) and even Aaron Carter, as a student in Doris' class.

It's silly fun for the family, and worth a look for Bill Cosby fans.

4 out of 5 stars Fat Albert Rocks.......2006-08-11

I was a little wary of yet another favorite cartoon-to-lousy live-action movie, but decided to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised. The movie is actually very good. I must admit, one of my favorite scenes was the last, of the real-life Cosby kids (Bill Cosby and friends) in their later years visiting Albert Robertson's grave. A sweet scene. On a lighter note, the music was great, including a fabulous remake of "Dancing in the Moonlight" for a little double-dutch action at the mall, and an updating of the original series' theme "Gonna Have a Good Time". I wish they would release a soundtrack CD if they haven't.

2 out of 5 stars Sweet But Pointless Remake .......2006-08-05

One thing you can say safely about the feature film version of `Fat Albert' is that the film's content is very sweet and good-natured. You can give a DVD of the film to a kid as a Christmas present without offending his or her parents. And people who grew up watching the original cartoons on TV in the 70s might love the new film. I'm sorry, but I'm not one of them, and the fact must have influenced my opinion. So, please read my review as such.

Keenan Thompson plays the live-action Fat Albert (in a fat suit) who comes from the animated world after witnessing a high-school girl Doris (Kyla Pratt) weeping before the TV set. Don't ask me how this happens, but anyway Fat Albert and Cosby's gang come to the real world, where they help lonely Doris find a new life.

As they are from the junkyard in the 70s, they are greatly surprised by everything they see and hear. And as they come from another world, they have to go back to where they belong. The film strictly follows these familiar rules, and it does not fail to include production placement, blatant reference to the DVD release of the original series.

In fact, too much is going on in the film, and none of them really works. You just don't need animation characters to lead a more motivated life, but Doris does when she participates in the relay race at her school. There is an awkward romance involving the character of Albert, which goes nowhere after all, and the gags are all uninspired. Of course, those who still fondly remember the characters might find something refreshing, but except the fact that these live-action characters look exactly like the animated counterparts, there is nothing that I can find interesting in the feature film.

The film includes a brief cameo from Bill Cosby himself in a weak sub-plot explaining the background of character of Fat Albert. I don't know Bill Cosby's reaction to the new film, and still I don't see why he sanctioned this pointless remake.

4 out of 5 stars moe DVD is good but the same show on HDTV was better.......2007-04-17

All it all, I really enjoyed this capture of a moe event. One thing I should note, I have previously seen them on HD TV and recorded the show on my set top box. The quality of the show on HD TV was/is excellent particularly the video portion. I then bought this DVD and discovered it was the same show. I noticed to my surprise that the quality of the video on the DVD didn't hold a candle to the same show that I recorded off of HD TV. It's not my gear since I have many rock shows on DVD that are of phenomenal video quality. Did someone at the production company cut costs on this disc? Seems like it to me. Still, a great show. Buy it anyway.

4 out of 5 stars moe. is worth the dough!.......2007-01-16

"Live from the Fillmore" is a very good snapshot of a moe. show. In terms of benefits, the setlist is satisfying. Many songs from the moe. canon are featured. The highlight may be 'Timmy Tucker > Tailspin.' While not a five star setlist, the selections demonstrate music with extended improvisation and good song craftsmanship. Also, the audio quality is excellent. Currently, this is the only way to enjoy the band in a surround sound environment. The audio editor did good work; typically, the audience is enjoyed in the rear speakers while the band is heard from the front. In terms of drawbacks, the video quality is mediocre. Pixilation is apparent to the extent that "Live from the Fillmore" often looks like a good fan generated download. Fortunately, the video editing and original videography is well done -the problem seems to lie in the final transfer. Some of the interviews are informative as when the band discusses their formation. Other parts are predictable, as when the audience is described as being the sixth member. While moe. has played better shows, this is still a persuasive view of a great live band. For the uninitiated and fans alike, "Live from the Fillmore" is a compelling portrait of one of the scene's best jambands.

3 out of 5 stars moe. DVD review.......2007-01-16

The quality of the sound and video is great on this DVD. I think the show is pretty average but this is the only moe. DVD, so if you want to see them live buy this DVD or go to a concert.

I honestly cannot say how the product is, I ordered it as a gift for my grandson, obviously, it's okay, I haven't heard any different, and believe me, he would have complained had it not been good. I will say that I recieved it quickly and was satisfied with my online experience with Amazon.com. Sincerely, Julia Fausak

5 out of 5 stars extremely good in all respects.......2007-01-08

hmm.... i guess i'd have to disagree with both of the other reviews here. the video is terrific, and i can hear all instruments clearly and well on my home theatre system- the dts sound production is a huge plus. i have more concert dvd's than i know what to do with, and this one really rates right up there among the best. these guys are on fire! moe lays it down thick, fluid and smooth. very well worth the money.....

5 out of 5 stars Not just for beginners!.......2007-01-23

It's true that this is probably a more challenging workout if you're a beginner. However, I often use this workout on days when I'm just not feeling energetic enough to do one of the FIRM's more advanced tapes. I still get a decent workout, and I'm not worried about injuring myself by doing more than my body is ready to do. Also, you can use heavier weights on some of the exercises to make it more challenging.

Once you're feeling more fit and more comfortable with the FIRM, you should probably try some of the tougher FIRM workouts. Keep this in your FIRM rotation, though! It's a great complement to all of the other FIRM tapes and DVDs.

3 out of 5 stars Really for beginners.......2006-03-07

PROs
- Light.
- Exercises are broken down so they're easier to learn.
- Clear and well-timed cueing with some instruction on proper form.
- Perky, happy instructors.

CONs
- I had already been exercising for about 5 weeks with the Susan Harris, Jayne Poteet, Standing Legs, and Upper Body firm videos when I tried this. I didn't even break a sweat, and I couldn't hit my target heart rate. This isn't really a bad thing but it would be more accurate to label the video "For beginners". In fact, if you're a beginner, then try this first. It'll give you an idea of what the Firm videos do and how they do it, and it'll prep you for the harder videos.

5 out of 5 stars Better late than never..........2005-08-27

I found out about this tape while browsing a few fitness forums for a good solid beginner work that would produce results.

Well, we all know about the good reputation the FIRM has for results but this is a great tape that can prepare a beginner for any system. In fact with modifications, this workout can grow with you. Sure, it's an older video but it gets the job done and it's fun to do.
I just wish they would put this on dvd. If it does happen please Amazon, let me know.

4 out of 5 stars Recommended for Beginners or Resumption of Exercise.......2005-08-26

I recommend this video for people who are new to exercise or are resuming exercise after a period of inactivity. You'll need either the tall box/fanny lifter or something you can sit on that is approximately 14 inches in height, as the tape uses it for hover squats and lateral rows, as well as leg exercises and some arm work. Also needed is a dowel or mop (I use a piece of PVC pipe I found in my basement) a set of light weights, one heavy weight (lateral rows) and a set of medium weights.

I returned to consistent exercise about a year ago and slowly worked up to resuming use of The Firm videos (I was one of the original Firm Believers who pre-ordered and pre-paid for the videos before they were produced). Two of my favorites are The Firm #4 - Time Crunch with the divine Susan Harris and Kai S. and The Firm Maximum Body Shaping with Tracie Long (who lives up to all the hype).

I bought The Firm Fat Burning Video thinking it might be a good workout for a light day, but didn't feel like I got much of a workout - didn't break a sweat. However, I liked the routine -and found it fairly easy and fun to follow and felt the instructors were pleasant and gave good cues. Like most Firm workouts, they alternated aerobic activity (in this case, low impact) with (very light) weight work (the least weight work of any Firm video I've done to date) and lunges/dips with the dowel. The abs routine was fairly brief - I think the box said 3.5 minutes.

If you want to start using The Firm videos, I'd recommend you begin with this one before tackling some of the others, as I find most of the other Firm workouts to be some of the toughest and most intense of those I've encountered.

4 out of 5 stars Great for new Firm Believers........2003-07-19

The workout is classic Firm. After purchasing the post 2001 tapes (they really lack the richness and intensity of the old ones) I was excited to find a tape that followed the original six ones. Jen Carmin's instruction is clear and easy to follow.

You can control the intensity by increasing your weights, making the workout a good one for longtime Firm Believers.

Perhaps this tape did not have the commercial success of the original series or the new one. That is too bad, because it is gem that should not be overlooked by anyone who thirsts for Firm workouts.

It was really because of Chicken Fat that I became interested in fitness. Today I own a gym for both children and adults and have begun to use Chicken Fat for my Kid class's and they love it. The Mom's and Dad's join in also so it's a lot of fun. I highly recommend this video to all.

Rev up the speed that you need to burn calories by alternating these two beginning-level cardiovascular workouts. Denise Austin (in a two-piece swimsuit and carrying no visible body fat) gives you two different 20-minute workouts in this 1996 video. First is a low-impact routine with simple moves: marches forward, knee lifts, side lunges, cha chas, and shuffles, for example, with even simpler arm work. There are no patterns--just one move repeated a bunch of times, then another move, so this video is best for exercisers who don't want to think about choreography. The setting is an outdoor park overlooking the ocean.

Austin's second workout moves onto the beach with a circuit/interval routine that alternates three minutes of aerobics with one minute of body sculpting with weights or a weighted bar such as the Body Bar. The aerobics are very simple--just a couple of moves repeated for three minutes. Each strengthening segment is one move, such as a lunge or military press, repeated for one minute.

Throughout both workouts, Austin cheerleads with her bubbly personality and encouragements like "You can do it," "You deserve it," and "If you rest, you rust!" The music is more energizing than in many of Austin's other videos. If you like Austin, you'll enjoy this one. --Joan Price

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the first part, do the second instead.......2006-11-15

This video consists of two 20 minute workout sessions. The first one is low-impact and the second is medium-impact circuit training with weights.

I recommend skipping the first session. It's not choreographed well at all; in fact, I think Denise was making up the steps as she went along. Also, it's boring and repetitive.

The second session is the one I love. (It's amazing how two sessions on the same tape by the same instructor can be so different!) I've been using it a few times a week for a few years now and I never get sick of it. It is well choreographed. The steps are easy to follow once you do it a few times. It's just the right amount of aerobics and light weights. The music is, suprisingly, not that annoying. I always work up a sweat when I do this workout. After a couple of weeks of doing it, I definitely noticed a difference in my arms and legs in terms of toning. This is a perfect little workout and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC WORKOUT (with a side of cheese)!!.......2006-11-05

If I were stranded on a desert island and could choose only one workout video...yes, it would really be this one. You must endure Denise's cheesiness (and the 80s music), but the 2nd workout on this tape is fantastic. From start to finish it's less than a half hour and in that time you never do weights or aerobics for longer than 3 minutes at a time. Before you know it, you've had a full body aerobic workout--weights and all. I've tried a lot of other videos (including many of Denise's) but I haven't found any that give me such a complete workout in such a short amount of time like the 2nd one on this tape. When I do it even just 2 times a week regularly I can really see and feel a diffence in my legs, upper arms, butt and waist. SO, if you want quick and easy this is it!
(Incidentally, I could take or leave the 1st workout on this tape, but if you like longer and slower it may be for you).

5 out of 5 stars My favorite aerobics tape ever!.......2006-03-03

The first segment is so fun and you really work up a sweat. The moves seem simple but the way they're put together really makes you feel like you're getting a great workout. The second segment is definitely a challenge, the first couple times it was hard for me to get through them but each time it gets easier. I actually look forward to exercising every day. Now that's an amazing workout!

2 out of 5 stars ONLY for the super-coordinated.......2005-03-03

Denise Austin is very nice and fun to watch, and it is in a great beach setting, but her steps are soooo COMPLICATED, you need to be a dancer to do them. I have been doing FIRM workouts for years, and I don't get discombobulated very easy, but I felt like I was tripping over my own feet ("Okay, grapevine, boxstep, mambo, turn and jump!"). I almost landed on my head, and the funny thing is, she even trips over HER feet when she is doing it (Watch carefully...you'll see her stumble). How does she expect us to do it???
She seems really nice, really. But I can't reccommend this video.

5 out of 5 stars "Cardio Made Fun".......2004-05-17

I just recently started a small fitness video collection to help me keep fit and tone up. I already own Denise Austin's "Hit the Spot: Thighs", and am waiting to receive "Hit the Spot: Arms and Bust; Abs; Buns", which I recently ordered.

Personally, I am not into aerobics, as I prefer walking and swimming. Whenever I go to the gym, I never partake in any aerobics classes, as I am not a `jump-around' person.

I read in one of my health books that it is important to incorporate a cardio workout besides toning the body. Therefore, I decided to get one cardio fitness video, featuring Denise Austin, as I enjoy her chatty persona. I decided on "Hit the Spot: Fat Burning Blast" after having read many of the customer reviews about it on Amazon.com.

"Hit the Spot: Fat Burning Blast" has two 20-minute workouts that are intense and a lot of fun. The first half with Denise alone doing a low-impact workout is good. I broke out into a sweat, and had to dry off and wait a little before starting the second portion.
The second half of the video (the `Circuit') portion is better, and more fun as it involves Denise and two other fitness trainers, Matthias (who is a gorgeous, muscled hunk!) and Caroline assisting her. It involves aerobics with brief intervals involving toning up with weights for 1 minute. By the end of the tape, I was sore, and drenched in sweat.

Generally, the whole video is good! The outdoor `beach' settings are nice, and the music is great. In the 'Circuit' portion, I love the musical interludes where Denise, Matthias and Caroline do their body sculpting before getting back to the aerobics. Denise's perkiness is in prime form in "Fat Burning Blast". Many people often complain about Denise Austin's chatty style in her videos. But I think her chattiness and perkiness is a big help in motivating us to tone up and keep fit, and makes the workouts enjoyable.

In conclusion, "Hit the Spot: Fat Burning Blast" will be my only cardio fitness video. I don't want any other, but this one! It is sufficient, plus it is effective and a lot of fun!

Denise Austin's Hit the Spot: Tone and Tighten combines several workouts from the Hit the Spot series to create a complete body workout in one DVD. This format is convenient because it hosts 20 minutes of low-impact aerobics plus six workouts that train the abs, buns, and thighs. These workouts are called chapters and are trained in 10-minute sessions. Intermediate and beginning programs are presented for each of the three body parts. That means workouts for the abs, buns, and thighs that will accommodate a variety of fitness levels and personal goals. As improved strength and stamina are gained, participants can advance from the easier to the more difficult sets. Austin utilizes simple movements and isometric exercises that are designed to increase lean muscle. While the workout is underway, some great training and weight loss suggestions are given. The information continues with an Ask Denise forum, health tips, and recipe chapters. This genuinely informative and effective program offers a safe regimen that will suit a wide spectrum of levels. Although good cues are given, extra attention should be given to body alignment and proper form when executing deep lunges and some of the more advanced abdominal work. If used with repetition, this one-stop workout can increase muscle tone and cardiovascular fitness. --Olivia Voigts

5 out of 5 stars Denise Austin workouts are very accomodating.......2007-01-26

I have bought workouts from a variety of physical fitness trainers, but I always go back to Denise Austin and now that's all I will purchase. For one, I like her short workouts, from 10 to 20 minutes. They accomodate busy schedules as you can do one, or if you have time, combine them for a longer workout. A major reason I like Denise Austin is that her workouts are easy enough for the average person to follow and feel successful, she doesn't do those maniac fitness routines that are impossible to accomplish and leave you feeling frustrated. I lost 50 pounds after pregnacy working out to her videos. Now I just use them along with a rowing machine to keep in shape for horse back riding (I ride hunters over fences) and toned legs and thighs are a must. I can't recommend all of her videos enough.

5 out of 5 stars Great Target Workouts-Warm Up Stinks.......2004-12-04

I still gave it five stars because the spot workouts are intense and pretty easy to follow. Denise Austin is so motivating and energetic, as always, this is why I love her. However, her warm-up to me is hard to follow. I like to just walk in place to get warmed up then scoot along to the other sections. The buns and thighs sections I haven't even been able to finish yet because they are sooo difficult. That's good. A challenge is always welcomed! So, Pros: Great workouts for ABS, Thighs and Buns. Cons: Bad Cues for warmup and is more difficult than it leads on. I consider myself to be in good shape but this is really hard. (Guess I'm not in as good of shape as I thought!) Keep it up ladies and don't lose sight of your goals! Stay motivated!

3 out of 5 stars Forgot the arms?!?.......2004-07-29

I just got the DVD, which was recommended by a friend and I was very disappointed to find that this series does not include the upper body in the work out. I was under the impression that this would also include the full body work out since it was not otherwise stated.

4 out of 5 stars Great For People With Not Much Time.......2004-05-11

If you're looking for a video that doesn't take a lot of time, then this is one that you should add to your collection. It doesn't matter if you're a beginner or have been doing this stuff for years, there are two levels to suit both challenges. 10 minutes is spent on abs, buns & thighs. You can choose to do all of them or one of them when you get a spare 10 minutes. The exercises are great and you can feel the burn in all your muscles. If you do this video 3-5 times a week and eat a healthy diet, you'll easily lose inches and tighten up those "loose" areas.

5 out of 5 stars Best exercise dvd I have found!!.......2003-04-03

this is one of the best exercise dvd's i have ever used. i actually look forward to exercising during the week while my child naps.

all the toning segments make me feel like i'm getting kicked into shape. i do both levels of fitness each day on the abs, buns, and thighs. the 10 minute segments are great for anyone who can't find time to exercise, or who have limited time because of small children.

as for the cardio, i found it to be effective. it actually is about 25 minutes long. the moves are easy to follow as long as you are trying. she does give instructions on what's going on.

as far as someone saying they wished denise would say "this is what we're going to do", and then do it, that's what kathy smith videos are for. the cardio workout was easy for me to follow! i would recommend to those who are starting up an exercise program after a year or more without, to sit through the cardio workout and watch the moves before doing it. that way, you'll know what to expect.

denise gives me the motivation and encouragement to stick with the program that i can't give myself. i stick with the program since i feel accountable to denise and myself if i miss a day of exercise. consistency is what gives results.

all you need are a mat or large rug(or carpeted area), a chair, a pillow, and a towel.
