The beautiful and frequently topless Makiko Kuno plays an assassin raised by a deviant blind priest to be a warrior of God. But the killings are political, the priest works for the mob and two magazine photographers stumble across the whole mess. One gets killed, the other escapes only to be stalked by the beautiful assassin. The plot is pretty familiar and the film is shot in the style common to Japanese movies of this type: lots of monochrome, cool blues and bled out greens to suggest an arid, sterile moral wasteland. The blend of Gonin-esque ultraviolence and Skinemax gratuitous nudity makes it entertaining, though on a slightly silly level. And Kuno, in tight mini skirts and high heels, packing heat... Ouch!

Kaori Shimamura is the beautiful beast in this Japanese "breasts and bullets" thriller, playing a Chinese assassin in Japan assigned to take out a yakuza boss and his associates. Along the way she falls in love with the ex-yakuza barman who becomes her guardian angel, bonds with a young Chinese woman trapped in a life of sexual slavery, and finally tracks down the vicious thug who murdered her little sister. Like the Zero Woman films, Beautiful Beast is directed with a terse, tight, grimly serious style, and a soiled morality and doomed fate underlie the mix of slick violence, hot erotic interludes, and unsettling sadism. I thought I would check out othr type movies, and I love Japanese type. This movie was made in 1995. The setting mobster type with an assasin (Black Orkid). This is something you would expect from an old american detective type flick. But it has a good plot.
The movie is easy to follow lots of action not much sex only the beganing scene. But it does flow well. Funny dialogs too. I was happy I purchased it,liked the movie and how it was done. You won't go wrong with it.

Good Femme Fatale Revenge Flick.......2004-05-29

"Beautiful Beast" serves up a lovely femme assassin known as "Black Orchid," who is out to avenge her sister's murder at the hands of the Yakuza. Early in the film, after bumping off three Yakuza, she flees, taking refuge when a bar owner named Fujinami sees her being chased, and beckons her in. Fujinami turns out to be a former criminal who has since renounced his Yakuza past.

While Black Orchid will take on virtually any Yakuza who crosses her path, she is specifically out to nail Mr. Ho, the Yakuza bigshot who killed her sister.

"Beautiful Beast" is a good killer-chick flick, though I would not go as far as to say it's a classic. The love story involving Black Orchid and Fujinami is moving, but the tension regarding Orchid discovering Fujinami is former Yakuza comes off weak, almost like that subplot was an afterthought. Mr. Ho is convincing as a slippery and creepy scumbag, so much that you find yourself chomping at the bit to see him bite the dust.

The final showdown in "Beautiful Beast" is the one major piece in the movie that drops the ball. I'm not jotting this down to be a spoiler for those who have yet to see the movie, just a note that it came off very anti-climactic.

Still, this is overall a good "Right back at ya" film. The music sets a good mood, the blood & guts are there, and "Black Orchid" is lovely and righteous!

A review of a pretty good movie........2002-10-25

...It's a pretty good movie overall. It developes a nice plot. Plot? That's right. It is a revenge tale. Plain and simple. But the writers did a nice job of adding in some emotional turmoil too...Plenty of violence. And some nudity. Also has a hard to view tortue scene. Only down side. But pretty good overall.

Red Army Killer.......2002-04-09

I felt Beautiful Beast was a bit above the standard level of the Japanese "girls with guns" films, if only because there is a better explanation given for the female protagonist's ability to function as an assassin and covert operative. Ran, also known as the Black Orchid, is half-Chinese, half-Japanese. She served as a Red Army commando for a time, fought as a guerilla in Afghanistan, and now works for the "Untouchables", a really scary gang out of Hong Kong.

But Ran's mission to Japan is personal. Two mob leaders, the head of a local Yakuza ring, and the boss of a Taiwanese mafia band, are collectively guilty of the brutal torture and murder of Ran's younger sister. Ran arrives in Japan and blows away the Yakuza kingpen with little difficulty. Her struggle against the Taiwanese chief is more difficult and protracted, and at one point, Ran is captured and subjected to some pretty harsh torture herself. In the final battle, Ran does not concern herself with a "fair" fight; she uses her knowledge of military technologies and techniques to ensure absolute obliteration of her enemies.

Zero Woman, Scorpion, and Black Angel have all returned for multiple adventures--I hope that Ran does so as well.

This was a great one!Action,determination,rapid fire pacing and of course,a beatiful heroine.The one love scene was a bit long-but that was my only complaint.If you enjoy 'hard boiled action' as the case advertises-this movie delivers!NOT A SPOILER-but where she sings near the end adds respect for the 'Black Orchid' So what are you waiting for-BUY IT!

Don't waste your time and money please........2006-11-17

I had no expectations for this film. I just wanted a no brainer action with some good looking chics in it. The story while not that bad proved to dissapoint the target market of hetro males when you find out she used to be a guy. Knowing this totally turns me off the female actress. The action was boring and when the end of the movie finally came I breathed a sigh of relief and gave the dvd away and I have certainly not missed it.

Love Beyond the Limits.......2002-06-25

Cheryl is the latest protagonist in the seemingly endless series of "Girls with Guns" imports from Japan. Cheryl is a bodyguard rather than an assassin, although she usually gets to fight lots of other folks who are assassins. Her support network includes Mark, a one-armed bartender and former soldier of fortune; Lucky Ear, a wheelchair-bound techno-geek who's in love with Cheryl; and a female doctor who seems to know many secrets about Cheryl. The doctor provides therapy to Cheryl in the form of sensuous nude massages, during which Cheryl fantasizes, rather incongruously--or so it seems--about men in kickboxing tournaments.

Cheryl's latest assignment is to protect a jewel thief from Hong Kong, who's come to Japan to recover a cache of hidden gems. The bad guys (whoever they are, and it doesn't really matter) have put out a contract on the thief, so Cheryl kicks, punches, and shoots her way through several bloody encounters with various assassins. Naturally, she beats them all, so the opposition ups the ante by calling in the Owl, an allegedly unstoppable killer. It turns out that Cheryl and the Owl have a past history, but it's definitely not what you would expect. Their final encounter is both erotic and sanguinary, in the approved tradition of this intensely formulaic genre.

Better than average, due to the interesting, if improbable, plot twist that drives the final part of the movie.
