Why did a half-million Americans walk from Missouri to Oregon? Were they escaping malaria? Seizing land from the British? Seeking out a better life? Classroom-friendly, The Oregon Trail is an easy-to-digest introduction to this historic route, to those who blazed and followed it, and to its pivotal impact on the shape of North America. Although the two-hour series is inefficiently divided between four separate cassettes, each half-hour program is conveniently divided into short two- to four-minute chapters, each focusing on a specific aspect of the journey, perfect for fourth- to eighth-grade classroom viewing and discussion.
Excerpts from men and women's diaries, archival photos, and reenactments help the viewer feel what life must have been like on the trail, capturing the fear, heartbreak, and breathtaking sights early pioneers experienced. The videos dispel myths of Native American violence, explaining that the Cheyenne and Pawnee people were far more likely to offer assistance or trade with the pioneers than to attack them. The series avoids in-depth discussion of politics or placing the trail in a larger historical context, focusing instead on the elements that will be most interesting to students: Did more pioneers die from gunshot wounds or being run over by wagon wheels? Why were oxen better than horses? Why did kids walk instead of ride in the wagons? For anyone curious about what life was like on the Oregon Trail, this is a great, easy-to-follow introduction. --Tara Chace
Description
Created by a four-time Emmy-winning filmmaker, "The Oregon Trail" chronicles the great mid-1800s trek across the unsettled American West. One in ten pioneers died along the way; many walked the entire 2,000 miles barefoot; but in the end nearly a half-million Americans followed the ruts west in search of a better life. Rare photos, diary excerpts, and stunning footage tell a fascinating story of tragedy and triumph.
This program received first-place awards from the Broadcast Education Association, the Oregon-California Trails Association, and the prestigious Telly Awards.
The film provides a comprehensive overview of the Oregon Trail, including: Lewis and Clark, the Astorians, the Whitmans, the Great Migration of 1843, reasons behind the journey, life on the trail, and encounters with Native Americans. Plus, the program includes background on all the key sites along the way: Ash Hollow, Chimney Rock, Scotts Bluffs, Ft. Laramie, Independence Rock, South Pass, Ft. Bridger, Ft. Hall, Three-Island Crossing, Whitman Mission, Ft. Vancouver, Oregon City, and many more. Two hours in length--divided into 4 half-hour segments.

The Oregan Trail.......2006-11-11
This dvd was purchased for the purpose of illustrating early American culture to Chinese students and was satisfactory for the purpose. The story and time segmentation of the dvd was most helpful with the longest segment about 50 minutes.
Very entertaining.......2004-11-14
This program is jam-packed with interesting tidbits. A lot of fun for adults and kids. Plus, I learned a lot. Who knew that almost all the children crossed the country barefoot!
Great movie for your classrom.......2000-06-23
My class was studying about Westward Movement and I thought that this movie was a great resource for it. While Historians comment on the hardships and hazards along the trail, the movie shows stunning pictures of the trail and its famous landmarks. My students enjoyed watching the tapes because it gave them a visual aid to everything they were reading and learning about.

Edge of my seat..........2007-06-15
I watched this with my daughter and husband and we were at the edge of our seat! The end of the DVD had us *sighing* and saying, "That's it?... where's the second one!" Autumn has a confident and fresh way of bringing the "legend" into your home showing you that "he" is out there! Great job, Autumn! Can't wait for #2!
Still Searching For A Living Legend!.......2007-04-27
The "Women In Sasquatch Research" bonus feature was extremely interesting to me.. There were a lot of facts presented here that I found intriguing. Also the eye-witness encounters are captivating, too.... Of course I was hoping to see actual filmed footage of a Sasquatch! Not just some questionable occurrences during their initial search, darn it! Yet,I still gained a lot of insight through this DVD, as a greenhorn in Bigfoot study and exploration by purchasing this video.
Who knows what we might see in volume 2, and I hope it won't be too long in the making of it... Since I am a member of Autumn's website Oregon Bigfoot, I'm glad I purchased this DVD, for continued research for the (next) "Search For a Living Legend."
Pretty Disappointed.......2007-04-14
So you are in the woods, looking for Sasquatch, filming as you go along, and the first night you hear mysterious sounds below you in a gulch. Do you.
A. Not have any of the wonderful gadgets out of the case ready to use?
B. Stare into the darkness while listening to the knocking of your Videographers knees?
C. Say you have a "vibe" and then listen to the sound again?
D All of the above?
Notice none of the options was to be prepared and do some type of scientific study during this time.
The folks are nice enough, but just when I thought this might get good, they ended it.
All in all I can't for the life of me see what ANYONE would see in this item that would warrent a positive review.
Buyers beware.
The new Horsemen of Sasquatch.......2007-01-30
With the departures of the original Four Horsemen of Sasquatch, as I call them (Krantz - deceased, Dahinden - deceased, Byrne - retired, Green - active but getting on in years); we begin to see the emergence of the new Horsemen taking up the charge. Foremost is Krantz heir apparent, Jeff Meldrum. The freshest breath of air for the new horsemen is none other than Autumn Williams. She has taken on this task after long-term encounters. But onto the DVD:
The DVD is a documentary on research performed by Autumn Williams, one of the few women in the field. While not 'professionally' done, this documentary was largely brought into being by Autumn herself doing the writing, editing, music, and much more and it looks quite well done. I enjoyed the whole main feature of the program but may have liked her "Women in Sasquatch Research" more. The main feature showed a re-enactment of the Bauman story, had 4-6 testimony stories, and a large segment on the beginning of a month long expedition Autumn and her minimal crew engaged in. This segment only covers the first 10 days or so with very little happening. It ends with them deciding to break camp and go to another location which had activity the day before they decide to leave (this actually seems to be the reason they are leaving).
I would like to see an entire segment and re-enactments of her own long-term encounters, as she defines it. It would be quite interesting so I will have to check out the related book "Valley of the Skookum".
Overall, a little dry, but the personalities make up for it, Autumn seems quite dedicated to her research. Her whole crew is likeable and I look forward to Part 2 of the series. The down side of the dvd is it seemed kind of put out just to make some money for further expeditions but since the team doesn't appear to have any big financial or academic backing, I can accept that.
Bigfoot IS out there (just not on this DVD)............2007-01-13
I enjoyed my viewing of this DVD. It isn't the best one I've seen, but it definitely isn't the worst. Probably the best part of the whole DVD is Amber Williams' presentation "Women in Sasquatch Research". My main complaint pertaining to the DVD is the lengthy expedition footage which could have been edited to half its running time (especially since they didn't find anything of any significance whatsoever). That would have allowed additional time for more eyewitness stories and re-enactments of sightings, which were much more interesting. I also must offer my complaint concerning the re-enactment of the Bauman incident that was recorded by Theodore Roosevelt. Historically, this event took place sometime around 1850 when Bauman and his ill-fated trapping partner were relatively young men who would have most likely been packing muzzleloading rifles. Instead of using the two old codgers with modern firearms that the DVD did I don't doubt a pair of buskinners from one of the rendezvous that take place in abundance around the country could have been found who would have been thrilled to portray them. Oh, well, the wisdom of hindsight.....
Despite my complaints, like I said to begin with, I still enjoyed the DVD and my Bigfoot collection is better for its addition. In quality this DVD reminds me a lot of "Rocky Mountain Bigfoot". I don't regret the money I spent. I just wish there'd been a few changes in content.

Customer Reviews:
Nice DVD.......2007-05-28
This has nice images and interesting info of the Oregon Coast...a little short would be my only complaint...for a $25 DVD, it only has about 50 minutes of footage, but I guess that's just because there isn't a huge market for this kind of movie.
Very enjoyable program.......2004-04-22
It all starts at the upper most point on the Oregon Coast in Astoria. From there it goes down the coast visiting cities and towns. Historic and scenic spots including lighthouses are featured. The Oregon Coast is so beautiful. Some of the sunsets are remarkable.
I thought the visits to the state parks and many interpretive centers added to the program. It even did a nice job covering the Oregon Coast Aquarium. The jelly fish were great. Watching them to music was like a ballet. It was well done. Narration, script and music were all executed well. The DVD menu was great for jumping around too.

Description
Soothing Waters Videos has combined Digital Video technology with proven relaxation and stress reduction research to produce a DVD that is specially designed to invoke relaxation and stress-reduction in those who watch and listen to it. While not created with film-quality Panovision equipment, this DVD has been rated superior in video quality to most of the direct relaxation DVD and Video cassette competition according to our reviewers and awards.
Our DVD is called Soothing Waters - California and Oregon. This DVD has won extensive praise for its relaxing natural ocean wave sounds and its spectacular coastal vistas. It has also won two videography awards: The Communicator Awards, The Crystal Award of Distinction for Creativity/Videography; and The Grand Goldie Film Award for Excellence and Special Expertise.
Studies have shown that basic white noise can help you to relax. Ocean Wave sounds act as a wondrous refinement of this basic white noise. The beauty of waves washing against spectacular rocks and beaches, and of magnificent coastal vistas, further enhances your sense of well being. When these two elements -- the sound of the sea, and the beauty of the sea -- are combined, a special sense of euphoria can be created to help you to forget your troubles, to set aside your frustrations, to relax, and perhaps to sleep.
The soothing sounds and views of waves can help reduce stress and lower anxiety levels while promoting the body's natural relaxation response. It is important that the body have an opportunity to relax every day to avoid the stacking effect that can create high blood pressure. Relaxing sounds can help to lower blood pressure and pulse, which can significantly reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack. Soothing Waters - California and Oregon was specifically created to reduce stress and promote good health, and to help you to relax.
Customer Reviews:
Also Disappointed.......2006-04-04
The video quality is passable, but the sound is muddied and is often marred by low frequency rumbles from wind hitting the microphone. You'd be better off listening to a crashing waves CD and closing your eyes.
Great for relaxing before bed........2005-09-15
This DVD is my favorite for helping me relax when I am stressed out, or helping me go to sleep on nights when I find myself unable to sleep. As a relaxation help it rates a 5. But as
a nature experience I would rate it a 3, because it is almost exclusively ocean, without the variances of some seals or boats or other things going on it is just to boring for a nature film,
but wonderful, wonderful to relax and dream by.
Quite disappointed.......2004-05-30
I bought this DVD based on the high recommendations of the other reviewers. All I can say is that I was very disappointed in the quality of the video. I wanted something that would look beautiful on my 61 inch Samsung. Almost all of the shots seem to be slighly out of focus, as if they were shot with a cheap camera with a poor lens. I compared this DVD with various beach scenes in movies I have and the scenes in the movies look a lot better! Sure, they use high end film Panovision cameras, but that is the quality I was hoping for. This DVD will be in my next garage sale.
Relaxing DVD.......2004-03-19
Well photographed, this DVD delivers what it promises. It is what it says... soothing. For someone who likes to fall asleep with the television on, it is perfect. With its hypnotic ocean sounds, and lovely beaches, it tempts one to visit these places.
Soothing Views and Sounds of Ca. and Or. Coasts.......2003-12-26
I bought this video as it was highly recommended by a good friend of mine. My friend was right! "Soothing Waters - California and Oregon" contains scenes from many of the most beautiful places along the coast of these two states. Natural sounds of the pounding surf, birds and other animals, and even the wind, which a couple of other reviewers found disturbing, I enjoyed immensely as it gave me a feeling of actually being in these incredible places. All of the locations are captured beautifully on the video, but my personal favorites are the many long scenes of Point Lobos, as it holds many fond memories for me.
As I watch with my headset on to better hear the sounds, I am mesmerized and then completely relaxed, to the point of what I call "drifting," and a profound sense of peace drives the tension and anxieties of daily living right out of my mind and my body. I believe Mr. Keith succeeds admirably in his efforts to promote these tranquil feelings in his viewers.

Description
The Oregon Trail was the last of four serials that Johnny Mack Brown made for Universal in the 30's before making the switch exclusively to features. Jeff Scott (Johnny Mack Brown), a famous frontier scout, is hired by Washington officials to stop outlaw Indian raids on pioneer wagon trains crossing the rich fur regions of the Oregon Trail. Johnny Mack, the hero dressed all in black, leads the wagon train out west with his faithful sidekick Fuzzy Knight at his side. Together they battle the bad guys working for a big eastern syndicate who don't want the settles to disrupt their lucrative fur-trading activities.

Old-fashioned western serial is worthy of a look...or fifteen.......2006-04-18
Johnny Mack Brown plays an unusually dapper fur trapper hired to investigate a series of attacks preventing wagon trains from reaching the Oregon territories. He joins up with the most beleaguered wagon train in history, which spends several sequential episodes trying to get out of the same dusty town. Whenever the train starts moving, it falls under attack by Indians or stampeding cattle or some other stock footage, which digital technology makes even easier to spot.
Don't try to watch more than one or two chapters at a time, because this serial bears the marks of the form. Serials were a unique format completely beholden to the circumstances under which they were viewed. There was no guarantee that viewers attended the theater the previous week, so every installment contains a certain amount of redundant footage. Each chapter has opening credits, scrolling text describing the story thus far and usually about a minute of footage from the previous chapter, including the cliffhanger. There are no obvious cheats, though there is often an added shot or two (such as Johnny jumping clear of a crashing wagon) that shows how the cliffhanger was resolved. I have to knock off one star because of the disappointing ending and the fact that 15 chapters is simply to much for the story.
Johnny Mack Brown has a very physical method of fisticuffs that is a nice contrast to his easy-going acting style. He's not the most charismatic cinema cowboy, but he's charming enough to anchor the creaky cast. The strongest supporting character is Fuzzy Knight, who made dozens of films and serials with Brown. His performance, while amusing, never degenerates to the point of simple comic relief. You'll probably get a laugh out of how coyly the romantic elements are handled, chaste even by 1939 standards. This serial is very similar to Flaming Frontiers, which is also available on DVD and is just as much fun.
"The King of Serials & B-Westerns...VCI Entertainment ~ The Oregon Trail (1939)".......2005-11-23
VCI Entertainment and Universal Pictures present..."The Oregon Trail" (1939) (Dolby digitally remastered), a 15 Chapter cliffhanger from an action packed Universal western serial era featuring an outstanding cast with Ford Beebe and Saul A.Goodkind at the helm...."The Oregon Trail" was the last of four serials that Johnny Mack Brown made for Universal Pictures in the 30's he moved back to full feature films and B-Westerns...story line has our hero Jeff Scott (Johnny Mack Brown) and his sidekick Deadwood Hawkins (Fuzzy Knight) working undercover to investigate missing wagon trains who never make it to Oregon....who is behind the Indian attacks and what eastern syndicate is involved with all the problems our early pioneers are dealing with...is Bull Bragg (Jack C. Smith) and his gang of cutthroats Breed (Charles Stevens), Daggett (Forrest Taylor), Dirk (Charles King) and Pete (Tom London) (what an outstanding lineup of screen badies) taking orders from Sam Morgan (James Blaine) who leading this dastardly pack of heavies...can we count on the cavalry riding to the rescue and keep all serial fans wanting more....will Bull Bragg blow the whistle on all who are involved in these 15 Universal episodes....don't leave the theater until the final chapter is over and done with "The End of the Trail"....just remember double thrills, chills, mystery and suspense...hitting the bull's eye with excitement...don't miss a single spine thrilling episode..return next week to this local theater for another episode of action and adventure that will keep you thrilled until the next chapter.
Under director's Ford Beebe and Cliff Smith, associate producer Henry MacRae, screenplay by George Plympton, Basil Dickey, Edmund Kelso and W.W. Watson , dialogue director Dorothy Cormack, musical director Charles Previn ...the cast includes Johnny Mack Brown (Jeff Scott), Louise Stanley (Margaret Mason), Fuzzy Knight (Deadwood Hawkins), Bill Cody Jr (Jimmie Clark), Edward LaSaint (John Mason), James Blaine (Sam Morgan), Charles Stevens ('Breed'), Roy Barcroft (Col. Custer), Lane Chandler (Corporal in Sherman's office), Charles King (Dirk/henchman), Tom London (Pete/henchman), Jim Toney (Idaho Ike), Forrest Taylor (Daggett), Charles Murphy (Tompkins), John C. Smith (Bull Bragg), Iron Eyes Cody (Crow Foot), Karl Hackett (Mr. Clark), Lafe McKee (character part), Tom Steele (character part) and Jim Thorpe (character part).......special footnote, they're several character actors who have made their mark in B-Westerns and Serials...Roy Barcroft who is normally cast as a villain is Col. George Custer, Barcroft's unmistakable smooth voice and his swager made him the perfect heavy in many a Rex Allen, Gene Autry, Johnny Mack Brown, Sunset Carson, Hopalong Cassidy, Eddie Dean, Wild Bill Elliott (Red Ryder), Rocky Lane and Dale Evans & Roy Rogers...the other actor is Charles King, who they called "Blackie" in just about every film, King worked in silent films when sound came in his career took off with many a B-Western hero Buster Crabbe, Buck Jones, Ken Maynard, Tim McCoy and little Bob Steele where his knockdown dragout fist fights with King became legend, you couldn't wait for that scene in the film to arrive and you were never disappointed.........meanwhile back to our Universal Serial which is always good till the last drop and this serial is no exception...there is a great deal of entertainment here for the cliffhanger fans out there...all courtesy of VCI Entertainment, who in my humble opinion is the best there is in restoring early serials and features.
Bobby J. Copeland's book on "Johnny Mack Brown: Up Close & Personal" is chuck full of answers to all the questions his fans had from early on...when you went to see him on the big screen, you got exactly what the marquee said...plenty of thrills, adventure and loaded with action...Johnny Mack was a natural for the western, his riding abilities and fight scenes were of the the same caliber as Buck Jones and Bob Steele...Johnny Mack sets the saddle better than Duke Wayne...seems Johnny got better with the more films he made and the scripts were always top notch...he was one of the best-liked people in films, what you saw on the screen is what he really was...a great human being.

Oregon Lighthouses.......2006-11-10
I wasn't completely satisifed with this DVD. I felt it could have oferred more Scenery of the Oregon Coastline.
wonderful.......2006-07-12
I bought this for my 8 year old son, who is fascinated with lighthouses. He has watched it many times. We have visited nearly every lighthouse in Oregon, Washington and California and this is an excellent addition to his collection. Thanks for a quality product (delivered in record time).
Great DVD.......2006-04-12
I really enjoyed this, because I went to Heceta Head Lighthouse almost four years ago. It is spectacular. The history is informative and the photography is beautiful. I would like to go down there again someday and check out more of the lighthouses there (Oregon has eight). I didn't care for the narrator's voice, though-that's the only downside.
Spectacular Photography, Great Narration & Music! Top Notch!.......2003-06-04
This splendid video will take you to the Oregon's wonderful coast and Lighthouses. It is spectacularly shot, dramatically written, and well produced. You will not be disappointed with the well read narration reminiscent of Charles Kuralt himself. The rich history is told dramatically told through historical photos, crisp images with dramatic lighting and even old ghost stories. The beautiful and relaxing soundtrack is written by the multi-talented filmmaker himself.
This is not your typical dry news documentary with average daylight photography and academic narration ... but rather a wonderful dramatic story of Oregon's lighthouses, their history, their beauty, and splendor. A must have for any lighthouse lover to add to their lighthouse collection!
Top quality video.......2003-01-11
My husband and I went to Oregon last summer and I remember seeing this video in the sea lion caves gift shop. I regretted not getting it and am glad I found it at amazon.com. For anyone who likes lighthouses or the Oregon Coast, this DVD is a real treat. The quality and filming are exceptional. There are nine lighthouses featured. I enjoyed the narration because it included a lot of really interesting background information on each lighthouse such as the history of the lighthouses, how they were built, and the lenses. You can also run it on your computer if you have a DVD drive.
