In The Enemy Below Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens are respectively captains of a U.S. destroyer and a German U-boat whose vessels come into conflict in the South Atlantic. Both are good men with a job to do, the script noting Jurgens' distaste for Hitler and the Nazis and engaging our sympathy with the German sailors almost as much as the Americans. Made at the height of the cold war of the 1950s, the film delivers a liberal message of co-operation wrapped inside some spectacular action scenes and a story which builds to a tense and exciting, moving finale. --Gary S. Dalkin
Description
It's Mitchum vs. Jurgens as the commanders of an American destroyer and a German U-boat play a deadly game of cat and mouse.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-03-14
Para mi padre fue una pelicula memorable. Le recordó su epoca de gloria en la naval.
Excellent film.......2007-03-10
I found this film to be not only an excellent action film, with excellent strategizing and suspenseful decisions by both sides, but to be a wonderfully clear-headed depiction of real people in war. The Germans were not automatically shown as Nazi fanatics (in fact it was made very clear that the German U-boat captain was not a fan of Hitler) but as men just like the Americans.
I found the ending to be wonderfully uplifting and emotional.
Ausgezeichnet, meine Herren!
Great WWII movie.......2007-03-05
One of Robert Mitchum's best flicks. I bought this one along with several other WWII movies as a gift for my husband and because I remembered this one to be a great psychological war movie.
One of the Handfull of Submarine Greats!!!.......2007-01-11
Submarine films are a genre unto themselves, and there is no doubt that this is one of the classics. Beyond that, it shows two commanders battling wits toward the end of the Battle of the Atlantic. Mitchum and Jurgens are both in fine form, and really demonstrate the futility of traditional patriotic warfare, if not its occasional necessity up through the 20th century.
There are certainly better films from the standpoint of showing the outfitting of a German WWII submarine, but that really does not detract from the drama of this film. For the inscrutable U-Boat commander (also classically played by Juergen Prochnow in Das Boot), Curt Jurgens demonstrates exceedingly well the conflict of dual roles of commander and friend with his subordinate officer Heinrich.
Highly enjoyable and recommended!
Excellent battle of wits........2007-01-10
This movie is an excellent example between two seasoned professionals - no good guy vs bad guy, revenge motives, no sex, no swearing; an example of a quality movie that Hollywood can do when it puts its mind to it. Excellent performance by an all-star, legendary cast! A war movie that anyone would enjoy that wants more from a movie than simple gore and violence; a thinking man's kind of movie. A must have if you are a fan of the "destroyer vs submarine" type of naval warfare.

John Candy's first leading role was in this 1985 film by Carl Reiner, in which the comic actor played a stressed-out air traffic controller who takes his family on a Florida vacation and has to deal with arrogant, rich jerks. Candy is good in what is almost a straight part (albeit with some jokes), and Reiner keeps the tone in check so his star has an opportunity to show more than one dimension. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Brings back memories........2007-06-06
Summer Rental starring John Candy sure takes me back to my chidhood. I remember watching this film over and over again. Parts of the film seem silly especially now that I am all grown-up, but it's just one of those films that make you feel good because it's simple and harmless. Directed by Carl Reiner, Summer Rental is a about a man who wants his family to spend a great and relaxing summer at the beach but when he realizes they have the wrong address, things take a turn for the worse. Their beach house is anything but relaxing, it's a little too close to the beach and crazy things start to happen. Well I don't want to spoil the rest but I will tell the rest of the film involves a boat. Happy summer folks and happy viewing!
Great Movie.......2007-02-28
This is, without doubt, one of the funniest movies the late, great John Candy ever made. Richard Crenna is great as the rich, snobby dentist who thinks he owns Florida and tries to run Candy's family out by refusing their rent check (he owns thier rental house). Great performances by Candy, Crenna, and Rip Torn. I have only one problem with the movie....there is a great song by Jimmy Buffett called "Turning Around" which is featured in full as the credits roll, but the song is not available. I am a Buffett fan, but I have never seen the song in any recorded form, and there seems to be no "Summer Rental" soundtrack. It's frustrating to watch the movie, hear the song, and not be able to buy the song anywhere. Why Buffett never released it is beyond me. Anyway, the movie is great, the acting is wonderful, and the soundtrack is really good.
Watch "Summer Rental" and be prepared to laugh.
John Candy is the best!!.......2007-01-03
John Candy movies have become classics - I grew up watching him and now I am buying the DVDs so my 2 children can enjoy him, too. He always lit up the screen and made some enjoyable family movies.
Great Movie.......2006-07-31
This movie is fun for the whole family and will make you laugh, cheer and just have a lot of fun. This one is a classic
I love John Candy!.......2006-06-25
I have alot of other movies that he has made in the past years. sorry he is no longer with us, he was a great actor.

Customer Reviews:
Forget the feature, watch "The Dot and the Line".......2007-05-21
I have a soft spot for silly 'sixties comedies, but not this one. It's too long. The script is weak and not very funny. The direction is often sloppy. Worse, a very good cast is given very little to do.
If I were judging this DVD just on the movie, I'd give it one star.
However, this DVD contains Chuck Jones' Academy Award winning cartoon
"The Dot and the Line". That's worth a few extra stars.
Check out the U.N.C.L.E. cameo!.......2007-04-25
In the party scene, there was a cameo that had me on the floor -- watch closely when Paul Lynde (in blue sequined dress and towering red wig) is on his way to the bathroom. He passes, of all people 'Napoleon Solo' of "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." played by Robert Vaughn! UNCLE was a huge hit at the time, and no doubt this was an in joke, as the company that made 'boat' also made 'UNCLE'---You even hear the UNCLE theme music as Solo turns around! Now if only they sneaked Ilya Kuriakin in there!
Great, silly movie, Doris is fab as always, and Rod Taylor is as sophisticatedly sexy as ever!
The Glass Bottom Boat - Doris Day.......2007-03-13
excellant movie, funny, entertaining - good family movie - just can't beat a Doris Day movie - she is one of a kind and my personal favorite - really charming, the movie - just great ..........quality of the DVD was very good............MaryEllen Cassidy
My Favorite Doris Day Movie..........2007-03-03
This is a truly great comedy, with great supports from Paul Lynde, Dick Martin, John McGiver, and Edward Andrews. Rod Taylor is also one of my favorites. Everyone shines in this. Practically every scene is a gem!! Classic. DVD quality is great and a few extras. Don't have these type of great comedians anymore.
Funny Movie.......2007-02-22
My husband and I happened to catch this movie on PBS about 1 year ago and laughed so much we had to own it. Doris Day and Rod Taylor are so much fun to watch in this movie. I highly recommend this if you like old romantic comedies.

The show that first defined the Broadway musical has never come to the screen intact, despite three tries. But take this splashy 1951 MGM extravaganza on its own terms, and it boggles the eyes. Not to mention the ears: The Kern-Hammerstein score includes some staples of the American songbook, such as "Make Believe," "After the Ball," and "Can't Help Lovin' That Man." Perhaps a riverboat gambler is almost too-easy casting for Howard Keel, and Kathryn Grayson is overly twittery, which may be why the film's middle sags when they take center stage. But any time the uncannily beautiful Ava Gardner smolders, a lush tragic undertone takes over (even if the most interesting parts of her story seem to take place offscreen). The physical production is extraordinary: the busy riverside setting, the outrageous color design, and best of all an "Old Man River" (sung by William Warfield) staged in the mists of morning. -- Robert Horton
Customer Reviews:
beautiful music with mixed results from a (relatively) strong cast............2007-05-19
SHOW BOAT has some of the most beautiful music I have heard, written by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein. Some of the most memorable songs from their score include "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man of Mine," "Old Man River," and "Bill." The music is greatly important in the musical, because it helps tell the story so well. The problem is I could never warm up the story, nor the melodrama.
Gaylord Ravenalle (Howard Keel) is a compulsive gambler who has a chance encounter with beautiful Magnolia "Noley" (Kathryn Grayson), the daughter of the purveyors of a show boat, docked in the water, bringing singing, dancing and joy to all who get on board. This includes many African-American workers, toiling under the hot sun, searching for some respite to their relentlessly difficult lives, in the post-slavery South. What's more, Julie (Ava Gardner), a beautiful stage performer, married to her singing partner, is one of the starring attractions there....Okay, no more summary. I don't want to ruin the plot for you.
I will say this. The story takes a look at racism, emotionally unavailable parenting and plenty of desperation. Sometimes these themes only make a story more compelling. For me, a little went a long way. I believe that racism is a very important subject that needs to be addressed more, but I almost sensed that it was painted more as an over-the-top farce than a legitimately unfortunate epidemic of society. The cast in this production does the best it can, with the material it is given. However, I found Kathryn Grayson's high soprano shrill and excessive, Howard Keel's macho preening and Joe E. Brown's drunken shenanigans to be ridiculous. Nevertheless, this is worth a viewing, for historical and cultural reasons (if not for the beautiful score, alone).
Restored and digitally remastered classic musical.......2007-03-09
Wonderful restoration and the music is wonderful; a classic musical--a must have in a video library! I loved it!
An excellent escape, however..........2007-02-11
While I fully expect the majority of those contemplating buying this movie to have in all probability already seen it, if you're nonetheless reading these reviews, you're obviously doing so for a purpose. My purpose for submitting this review has nothing to do with the movie which is arguably one of the finest examples of the classic musical genre, but rather with the quality of the delivered physical product. I received the DVD in nothing more than a plastic frame covered in cardboard...suitable for trashing. My next purchase was a 10 pack of DVD cases for about $4.00 and change. After surgically cutting and resizing the cardboard cover from the original product and inserting it into a real DVD case, I had something I could add to the DVD cabinet. If you want a DVD you can add to your library, plan on buying additional cases and have a sharp razor blade.
5 stars.......2007-01-11
It's with great pleasure I see this film. It is a great story with great singers. In 1953 I had the pleasure to be on one of those riverboats when I visited New Orleans so it's easy to recall the feeling.
THE COMPLETE SHOW BOAT ON DVD.......2006-09-27
Someone needs to petition Warner Bros to release a DVD version of MGM's COMPLETE SHOW BOAT Laser Disc set, with the 1929, 1936 and 1951 versions, and the SHOW BOAT segment from TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY. If it ever happens, I hope they will be able to include all the LD audio bonuses from the 1951 recording sessions and still photo galleries of the three films as contained in the Laser Disc set. If George Feltenstein is lurking about reading these posts, it would be really nice to get some of the Criterion content from their release, if they're willing. Could we also please have as much of the 1929 Ziegfeld Prologue as possible? And while I don't usually recommend this type of thing, the alternate stereo mix of the last LD issue of the 1951 film (with the Ava Gardner vocal tracks in place) would be a dream come true!
In fact, after BEN-HUR and GWTW, an entire fourth disc of bonuses would not be out of the question.

That leaves the Black Panther with a single option, one that goes against the sacred decrees of his people-to ask for help from outsiders. And so he turns to--- The Avengers - Captain America. Iron Man. Thor. Giant Man. Wasp. And the Incredible Hulk. These mightiest of heroes have battled the aliens before, and barely survived. They thought it was over. They were wrong.
Customer Reviews:
More of the same.......2007-06-21
The first Ultimate Avengers movie was decent, but ended just when things were really starting to pick up. I was hoping the sequel would be better, but it's pretty much more of the same. The alien invaders are back, and they're still kinda generic and uninteresting. Voice acting is decent, but I never really got attached to these heroes like I wanted to. I suppose the looser guidelines on violence should appeal to older fans like me, but when the story is bland like it is here, the violence just comes off as a forced attempt to be 'edgy.' There was one twist in the ending though that caught me by surprise.
I wish they'd made this a full tv series, giving the creative team time to work out the kinks. UA2 will give you enough of a superhero fix, but it won't leave you satisfied.
Avengers downfall.......2007-05-26
Initially I was really pleased to receive this new DVD. I played the "Which Avenger Are You" DVD rom game and it said I resembled Thor! You can make different choices and change your gender to view other characters. This game is repeated from Ultimate Avengers DVD.
This sequel was very disapointing. The plot development and the return of the alien invasion reminded me of The Justice League premiere movie. I found I was not surprised when you understand the marvel formula - the hero will suffer or die, despite their power just to say "we are human". What I mean here is that the whole movie was a bad soap opera, way too melodramatic and very cliched or stereotyped in areas. I could go in specific details, but I just don't have the time because most is too negative i am afraid.
I listened to the commentary and found that the creators contradicted what they set out to do. What they deemed 'cool' was in fact 'cold'. Sorry my review is probably not want you want to read, but, I really feel this is a film for die hard fans to see these characters animated. There was room for huge potential, the animation is fine, the voices are fine and fit the characters, but the story itself has just been done too many times in other mediums and this was not NEW.
Perhaps forgetting the alien invasion and sticking to telling a traditional Avengers story with known bad guys would have have made this movie more memorable.
Overall I was not happy with the movie, but, this is probably better than nothing at all.
Lionsgate did do an excellent job with packaging and the features on the DVD. At least it looks good on a shelf.
Ultimate Avengers 2.......2007-05-14
If you loved, still love, Marvel comics, this is for you. The excellent animation brings the still images of the page to life. Although I don't think that it was quite as good as the first, Ultimate Avengers, it is still well worth purchasing.
sophomore slump.......2007-05-07
The first Ultimate Avengers was awesome. I was really looking forward to the 2nd one, especially since the Black Panther was going to be featured. I have to say that I was disappointed. The story was not engaging and I expected more from a sequel. The action animation was not riveting, at least not to Marvel Comics standards. The story didn't flow very well which leads me to blame the over-all direction. Hard to say what they could've done to make this one better. All I wanted was more of what was in the first edition but I think they fell short.
WYSIWYG.......2007-04-11
This is an animated cartoon about superheroes, the acting and the voice overs are decent enough the story line has a believable plot for a story about superheroes overall enjoyed the movie and do not regret the purchase. If you are looking for a knock your socks off movie, then look else where if you want good clean fun then watch this movie.

Big 5 Stars!.......2007-06-28
Loved it! Love the whole "Ultimate" line. I would love to see more Marvel Ultimate movies come out.
Ultimate Avengers - The Movie.......2007-05-14
If you loved, still love, comics; this is for you. It takes the static images of the Marvel world and brings them to dynamic life. All of the Avengers are well represented here. The only thing that might compete would be the much anticipated live action film planned for the not to distant future.
Entertaining [3.5 stars].......2007-04-26
The animation is good and the story line interesting. What makes the movie worthwhile is the climactic battle between the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers. Not surprisingly, there is a fair amount of "action" violence without any gore. Depending on your sensitivity to violence and language, kids can watch the movie.
4 1/2 Stars Captain America Iron Man Nick Fury match whits.......2007-04-21
Great follow-up, including with the animation to Marvels recent live action Spiderman, X-Men, Daredevil, Hulk, Punisher, and so on. What great exhibition of Marvel Comics favorites Captain America, Iron Man, and intro for those less familiar with Nick Fury, Wasp, Giant Man and the like. For an animated film there's a lot personality and attitude in each superhero. The final showdown with Hulk is the keeper, especially with about 70 min total running time. Stay tooned!!! Those familiar Marvel Comics "Guest Star" volumes or the Capcom Arcade tournament game, watching Hulk vs. Giant Man, Hulk vs. Wasp and Captain America, are the highly anticipated dream scenario.
A complete waste buy the BOOK!.......2007-03-04
The trade paper back was excellent what Marvel did here was take all of the character development, internal struggles, and just about all the debth to the story and threw it out the window and taked on an alien conspiracy to make more action (because pretty explosions is the only thing we need to make a good movie right?).
Buy the book, movies like this is what makes comics still look bad. worst adaptation of the year. Quality control people.

Description
The Doris Day Collection features six new-to-DVD titles -- Young Man With a Horn, Lullaby of Broadway, Love Me or Leave Me, Billy Rose's "Jumbo", Please Don't Eat the Daisies, The Glass Bottom Boat -- along with two of Ms. Day's all-time favorite musicals, Calamity Jane and Pajama Game which have been repackaged for the Collection. All DVDs are packed with bonus features including vintage shorts and featurettes, cartoons, trailers and more.
Young Man with a Horn (1950)
With a second-hand trumpet and the loving guidance of a brilliant bluesman, a lonely boy grows into manhood as a superb musician whose talent carries him from honky-tonks to posh supper clubs. But his desperate search for the elusive high note, trapped in his mind but impossible to play, starts him on a boozy downward slide. Charged with dynamic performances by Kirk Douglas (the title role), Doris Day, Lauren Bacall and Hoagy Carmichael and pitch-perfect direction by Michael Curtiz, the film is a feast of hot, cool, moody jazz. Legendary Harry James dubbed Douglas' horn work.
Lullaby of Broadway (1951)
Day danced divinely and sang in this musical delight about a singer newly arrived in New York and destined for Great White Way fame in the capable company of co-stars Gene Nelson, S.Z. Sakall, Billy DeWolfe, Gladys George and Florence Bates. Highlights are the inclusion of the OscarR -winning title tune, Cole Porter's "Just One of Those Things", "Somebody Loves Me" and six more songs.
Love Me or Leave Me (1955)
Laced with Doris Day's vibrant performances of songs from the era, this 1955 Academy AwardR winner (Best Motion Picture Story) is the tough-minded true tale of Ruth Etting's life with the man who boosted her career with strong-arm tactics yet smothered her in an obsessive grip she escaped at great peril. As Martin "The Gimp" Snyder, James Cagney earned one of the film's six OscarR nominations. Ms. Day's Etting was a career-best dramatic performance, bringing acclaim from critics and protest letters from fans unprepared for the departure from her traditionally sunny roles. DVD special features include: Soundtrack remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1, Three vintage shorts, the first two with Ruth Etting (A Modern Cinderella, Roseland, A Salute to the Theatres)
Billy Rose's Jumbo (1962)
Radiant Doris Day sings beloved Rodgers and Hart tunes and does her own horseback riding tricks in this razzle-dazzle musical based on Billy Rose's stage spectacular and featuring circus sequences directed by Busby Berkeley. The story revolves around a circus owner (Jimmy Durante, star of the 1935 Broadway original) with only two real attractions: his daughter (Day) and popular pachyderm Jumbo. Three-ring pandemonium breaks out when a handsome rival (Stephen Boyd) infiltrates the circus, and father, daughter and Dad's wisecracking fiancie (Martha Raye) are suddenly at risk of losing the greatest show on earth. o DVD Special Features include: Soundtrack remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1, Musical short Yours Sincerely, Tom and Jerry cartoon Jerry and Jumbo, Original overture rejoined to the film for the first time in more than 40 years.
Please Don't Eat the Daisies (1962)
o Ms. Day brings her trademark radiance to this jovial comedy from the bestseller by playwright Jean Kerr. With Janis Paige, Spring Byington and Richard Haydn on hand for snappy comic support, Please Don't Eat the Daisies is breezy family fun with popular songs "Please Don't Eat the Daisies" and "Anyway the Wind Blows."
The Glass Bottom Boat (1966)
Doris Day entered her eighth consecutive year as a Top-10 Box-Office Star when she boarded The Glass Bottom Boat, a blending of romantic comedy and the era's burgeoning spy-movie genre. Frank Tashlin directs with a cartoonist's sensibility, embracing everything from spy guises to push-button chaos in a futuristic kitchen. The film also stars top comedians Arthur Godfrey, Paul Lynde, Edward Andrews, John McGiver, Dom DeLuise and Dick Martin. o DVD special features include: Three vintage featurettes (Catalina Island, Every Girl's Dream, NASA), Oscar-winning cartoon The Dot and the Line.
Customer Reviews:
Great Set.......2007-03-23
Doris Day is great. I have always been a fan of hers. The movies in this set give us a good representation of her dramatic and comedic skills as an actress. This set would be a good gift to give to someone who loves the classics and musicals.
A Doris Day Attitude.......2006-11-10
Who doesn't like Doris Day? She's perky and cute and you can't keep from smiling when you watch her movies. We enjoy this collection, although some of the shows are better than others. A great keepsake for fans!
Great Tribute to A Great Star: Doris Day.......2006-08-20
If you are too young to have sat in one of those grand movie palaces and watched Doris Day grace the screen, you don't know what you missed. She lit up the screen and made millions fall in love with her.
I loved the extras for "Love Me or Leave Me" with Doris and James Cagney on the set waiting for the director to call "action!" They showed it from the standpoint of the camera and crew in the dark with the lights blazing, ready to shoot.
The inclusion of the song especially written for "The Pajama Game," "The Man Who Invented Love," was a special treat. We, her fans, had heard of the song, but had no idea that they had actually filmed the scene, which was eventually cut and shelved. It had been sitting in the vaults for over 40 years and then some brilliant researcher found it and included it as a DVD extra. Thank you!
Doris has made so many great films, she needs a couple more boxes on the market. Until then, I'll cherish this one. For all of the Day fanatics, it has been a great year with the release of all this Day material. Please, bring us more!
NOT THE GREATEST BOX SET!.......2006-05-02
I'm not a big Doris Day fan, but I thought I give the set a shot. Thought Love Me or Leave Me was excellent, Calamity Jane was very good and even Lullaby of Broadway and Young Man with a Horn weren't bad, but the rest were sickenly sweet. I thought Jumbo and The Pajama Game would NEVER end. Even Jimmy Durante couldn't save Jumbo! And The Glass Bottom Boat wasn't even worthy of the Three Stooges. The good news was I was able to sell 5 of the movies on Amazon, kept three and even made a profit by selling them individually so the box set didn't cost me anything and I made a few bucks on Doris too!
doris day is here.......2006-02-22
after way to long we get the doris day collection and it's great.a nice cross section of her films all looking great and as good as ever. if you love doris day then this is what you want.

...........WW2 Submarine Warfare in the Atlantic [1943]...............2007-06-11
.....Here's WW2 Hollywood at its best....try to remember it's 1943; not nowaday...Tyrone Power-Dana Andrews-Anne Baxter-Jimmy Gleason-Minor Watson and Dame May Whitty, comprise a solid cast to put this film over...this Navy flick hit the mark as you left the theatre thinking we ARE going to WIN this war afterall...1943 was a pivotal war year for the USA...this movie is discussed pretty well by other critics in here, so be it...I could find no fault with the beautiful/primary technicolor [never better print] or the predictable screen/play...if any scene captured my fancy...it was the perfect train/Mayflower hotel scene[s] with the slick/glib Tyrone Power on the make for the enticingly, beautiful Anne Baxter who had a penchant for sexiness with her clothes on...now that is an accomplished actress...catch her in another movie ten years later, "Carnival Story" and you tell me if she is sultry/captivating or what??...you won't be disappointed in this DVD...it's America at its wartime BEST!!.....SSGT CHRIS SARNO-USMC FMF
Lesser Known, Still Exciting.......2007-06-01
Perhaps because it is not so well known, I found this WW2 sub film intriguing from the git-go and recommend it highly to all submarine enthusiasts. Like most such films, it is weak on technical information but that's pretty much the way it goes, and still I recommend it highly.
Crash Dive.......2007-01-15
Received in the time promised. Have not viewed this DVD yet but I am sure it will meet my expectations.
stick to the bombs & avoid the kissy scenes.......2006-08-03
a ww2 potboiler with the classic love triangle where the 2 best friends both love the same gal, highlighted by some excellent battle sequences wherein the crew of a single submarine manages to sneak into a secret nazi base and blow up an entire fleet. the progenitor of movies like "guns of navarone", its a fun watch when they keep it to the war.
A recruitment drive with a love interest.......2006-01-31
Lt. Ward Stewart (Tyrone Power) is in love with PT boasts he can drop depth charges on sneaky German U-boats that use lifeboats as ship bait. His Uncle Adm. Bob Stewart (Minor Watson) needs an exec on a U.S. Sub and talks him into doing his duty.
Meanwhile the sub commander Dewey Connors (Dana Andrews) is waiting for one more stripe so he can be worthy of popping the question of marriage to his girl, Jean Hewlett (Anne Baxter, `Nefretiri' in "The Ten Commandments" (1956).)
You guessed it while Dewey is away Bob discovers Jean and beats him to the question. Jean says sure; she just forgot to tell ether of the men about the other.
One of the interesting things about this movie is that instead of good guy - bad guy, both officers are good guys and it takes both personalities to accomplish the missions.
They do go out of their way to make the Germans sneaky and do extraordinary feats with their sub and commandos.

Best Cold War Film.......2007-05-07
This film is the best Cold War film I have ever watched!
Richard Widmark,Sidney Poitier and Martin Balsam are absolutely superb in this film! I am amazed that this film, which was made in 1965, is as poignant now as it was then. Only Richard Burton's 'The Spy Who Came in from the Cold
can be truly compared in quality to this Cold War thriller!
I don't ever recall seeing this film on broadcast television or cable. Was it ever aired after it's theatrical release? I definitely know this film is not for weak nerves. There is not a boring segment throughout!
I have been collecting DVD's of Sidney Poitier recently and I just purchased this one. I can't help but say this is his best film,in my opinion. This man is a fantastic screen presence!
It was also fun watching James MacArthur in this film as a young Navy ensign. (He later went on to become Dan-O on Hawaii Five-0).Hawaii Five-0 - The Complete First Season
Please, if you truly want to watch an excellent film drama purchase this DVD!
Good movie, bad price.......2007-03-15
Don't get me wrong by my rating. This is an excellent film. However $24.95 is way too high a price to pay for this, especially considering there are no extras at all. What were they thinking? It should have been $9.95 retail, which I'm sure it eventually will be. So for now, be happy with your video copy. Or if you have a dvd recorder, just wait for it to show up on Turner Classics.
Shocking cold-war classic.......2006-11-02
This is intense edge-of-your seat drama. A frightening portrayal of the obcessive cold-war captain mistaking equates fear of his authority with readiness in war. The end is inevitable and chilling. Mr. Portier's character comes off a bit on the preachy and self-righteous side but still gripping and likeable. Richard Widmark is, perhaps, at his best in this film and gives a stunning performance as the obcessive and bullying captain. A great addition to any intense thriller drama library.
excellent suspense.......2006-06-15
I first watched this film many years ago....It was one of the most suspenseful movies I had ever seen at that time. Widmark and Poitier are both excellent in their respective roles...In fact, the whole cast is excellent.
I especially enjoyed James McArthur of Hawaii Five-O fame and Wally Cox.
This is a film that will keep you on the edge for its length.
A real Cold War Chiller!.......2006-04-06
Richard Widmark and Sidney Poitier are reunited from their movie "No Way Out" and in a bit of a stretch their roles reversed. Widmark plays a staunch and disciplined, bordering on fanatic, captain of the naval destroyer U.S.S Bedford involved in a cat and mouse chase of a Soviet submarine. Poitier plays an over enthusiastic reporter bend on getting the true story of the most deadly game being played out.
This is a great Cold War movie boasting an impeccable cast of supporting actors and a perfect companion to "Fail-Safe". As with Fail Safe and The Longest Day, appropriately filmed in B&W.

Fer Christ Sake!.......2007-06-10
I Both love and hate this film. While it has the depth of apple skin it looks real perty. Any inbred would surely love it! If you gave this to a hillbilly I think he would give it back unless prompted by a corn cob pipe and a felt hat to keep it. I think you could drill out the center of the dvd and line it with some nice soft fur and use it for a marital aid.
A boatload of goo and other odd sights.......2007-05-25
I think Matthew Barney is a consistently intriguing artist, but I must admit I generally find the criticism of his work far more interesting than the actual product he creates; the response is often richer than the statement. And while that sounds like an insult, I can't think of many other artists who occupy such a unique creative situation. Michael Bay, maybe?
Barney's sculptures and his video installations are a chunky milkshake of surrealism, egoism, metaphor, vanity, pretension, imagination, cliches both unintentional and subverted, and often lots and lots of goo. He spends a lot of time reflecting on Gary Gilmore and the mechanisms of the scrotum, and his films have featured such aged, awesome monuments as the Utah salt flats, the Chrysler Building and Norman Mailer (in the role of Houdini). Barney, too, often turns up, either dancing or climbing or crawling or facing the odd ordeal of having live airborne doves connected by strings to his penis.
There's almost no way to describe his work without sounding tongue-in-cheek to some degree, but on many levels I really like it. His languid, usually glacial pace, however, is no laughing matter. Even as someone who checks it all out, I've suspected the long running times have something to with the possibility that, if things moved any faster, these installations would be a lot harder to take seriously; they might be indistinguishable from some of the videos by underground bands that aired after 1 a.m. on MTV during the mid-1980s.
"No Restraint" is both a brief history of Barney and a look at his latest work, "Drawing Restraint 9." We get a good look at his early pieces -- workout equipment encased in Vaseline; taped footage of the former college football star creating art while being pulled away from his work by bunjee cords -- as well as glimpses of his Cremaster series. But most of the movie concerns the making of "9" in Japan and on a whaling ship. Much petroleum jelly is harmed during the making of this film.
If you're interested in Barney, you'll probably be interested in this. But as I watched it I wished the filmmakers had taken a different approach. Their style, like Barney's, is clean and very bright and paced on the draggy side. I would've liked to have seen this documentary go in the opposite direction and present its subject with a little more inventiveness and energy, something that didn't look so much like an electronic press kit. As it is, "No Restraint" is informative but it lacks that engaging, atypical hook or approach that can make a film like this really sing.
