From the moment that Prince Eric's ship emerged from the fog in the opening credits it was apparent that Disney had somehow, suddenly recaptured that "magic" that had been dormant for thirty years. In the tale of a headstrong young mermaid who yearns to "spend a day, warm on the sand," Ariel trades her voice to Ursula, the Sea Witch (classically voiced by Pat Carroll), for a pair of legs. Ariel can only succeed if she receives true love's kiss in a few day's time and she needs all the help she can from a singing crab named Sebastian, a loudmouth seagull, and a flounder. The lyrics and music by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are top form: witty and relevant, and they advance the story (go on, hum a few bars of "Under the Sea"). Mermaid put animation back on the studio's "to do" list and was responsible for ushering Beauty and the Beast to theaters. A modern Disney classic. --Keith Simanton

One of the last great Disney Movies.......2007-05-28
Mermaid was one of Disney's last great movies.....before they started trying to spin each classic tale into a 2nd, 3rd movie....each meaningless money making machines.
The Little Mermaid is the Disney version of the Hans Christian Anderson tale. Disney brings it to life with the beautiful Ariel, and a whole cast of loveable characters- Flounder, Eric, Sebastian, Flounder, Skuttle.
Ariel, the youngest of many daughters is bored with life under water and want to explore life on land as a human. She see's a man aboard a boat and falls in love. His name is Eric. When a storm rages, Ariel saves Eric and leaves his ashore. He sees her and can't forget her face. Against her fathers wishes Ariel dreams of life on land. She bargains with the sea witch Ursula to turn her into a human. The price she pays is her voice. She has to make Eric fall in love with her- but she has no voice.
Ursula uses Ariels voice to bring her father to her knees. In the end, she is overcome, and Triton- Ariels father is saved, and let's Ariel go- to become a human.
The music is some of the most creative animated music EVER. From Kiss the girl to Under the Sea, each songs is singable, and unforgettable. Boy and girls alike will love this movie about dreams, courage, and adventure.

A heartwarming film that demonstrates how good, hard-working people can become homeless almost overnight, Pursuit of Happyness is a tour-de-force showcase for Will Smith, who convincingly portrays a down-and-out dad trying to better his family's life. Smith, who usually is cast in effortlessly boyish roles (Men in Black, Independence Day), is wonderful in the film--even in the scenes that shamelessly tug at viewers' heartstrings. Based on the true-life story of Chris Gardner, a San Francisco salesman forced at times to shelter his young son (played by Smith's adorable look-alike offspring Jaden Smith) in a men's room, there is little suspense to the film in terms of Chris' outcome. (His story and eventual success a successful and wealthy Chicago businessman was well-publicized on the newsmagazine show 20/20.) And let's face it, Hollywood's not too keen on making feel-good movies with unhappy endings. The beauty (and suspense, to a certain extent) of this film is in the way the story is told. Though he is constantly rushing around to get to appointments and pick up his child, things do not happen quickly for Chris. When he accepts an internship with a prestigious stock brokerage firm, there's a catch: The position is unpaid, suitable more for trust-fund children than single parents with no other source of income. In many scenes, the viewer panics along with Chris, wondering how he's going to feed his child. While Smith and his son, Jaden, share many tender moments together, Thandie Newton has the thankless role of playing Chris' shrill wife, who deserts her family early in the film. It's not a particularly challenging part for the talented actress, and her departure doesn't impact the storyline much at all. As for the movie's misspelled title, it's inspired from a scene in the film. (Seeing a mural drawn by the children at a daycare center, Chris points out to the proprietor that "happiness" is spelled incorrectly. She notes that it doesn't matter how the word is written--just that the kids have it.) With Pursuit of Happyness, Smith has come out of his safety zone and, in turn, ends up playing his most heroic role to date. --Jae-Ha Kim

Will Smith stars in the inspirational true story of Chris Gardner, a San Francisco salesman who's struggling to make ends meet. When his girlfriend Linda (Thandie Newton) walks out, Chris is left to raise their 5-year-old son Christopher (Jaden Smith) on his own. Chris' determination finally pays off when he lands an unpaid internship in a brutally competitive stockbroker-training program, where only one in twenty interns will make the cut. But without a salary, Chris and his son are evicted from their apartment and are forced to sleep on the street, in homeless shelters and even behind the locked doors of a metro station bathroom. With self- confidence and the love and trust of his son, Chris Gardner rises above his obstacles to become a Wall Street legend.

THIS IS GREAT.......2007-06-29
My husband and I watched this and loved it so we had to buy it. It shows what life is really about
INCREDIBLY WELL DONE!!.......2007-06-27
While this movie was only a slice out of Chris Gardner's book it was still incredibly well done. It placed the focus on what was important about this man's journey and I applaud Will Smith and his team for being able to do that. This movie inspired many and Will deserved those nominations for the role he played.
Pretty good...but less than I expected.......2007-06-25
This is your typical rags to riches story. It lacked the drama I was expecting...considering the hype. Still, it's a good movie and I'd recommend it.
Inspirational True Story About Overcoming Obstacles.......2007-06-23
If you have a vision/goal for yourself & your family and you work hard to realize those dreams, then you will succeed in life.
Mr. Gardner is a wonderful example of the typical person with the vision/goal of living the all American dream. Through much adversity he never gave up and went from being homeless to a successful stock broker.
Smith finally breaks through into the elite of actors and gives us as all something cheer about..........2007-06-22
Will Smith carries this film on his very sturdy shoulders and proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that he has matured since his `Fresh Prince' days into a very fine actor. His performance is layered, structured and intelligent, but amidst all of that he still comes across natural and refreshing, never forced or mechanical. Every emotion runs through his blood effortlessly and full of believable conviction. I've always been a fan of Smith, but here he returns to the brilliance he possessed in `Ali', coupling his on screen fire with heart and soul that transcends the meaningless boundary's of comic relief but that which leaves a deep rooted sense of character and warmth. Smith disappears inside Christopher Gardener but he never loses himself, his charm and his commanding presence.
`The Pursuit of Happyness' tells the true life story of Christopher Gardener, a family man who gets wrapped up in the wrong pyramid scheme and ends up broke and homeless. His wife Linda, played by Thandie Newton, walks out on him he's left desolate and alone. The love for his son Christopher, played brilliantly by Smith's own son Jaden, is what keeps Gardener holding on in pursuit of a better life.
One thing that Christopher has going for him is potential. He's a smart man with ambition and determination and so when he sees an opportunity to rise above himself through an internship with a law-firm he takes it despite the fact of no pay and he uses it to better himself and his surroundings. Smith's wide range of emotions are what keeps this story compelling and entertaining, from his sadness and grief stricken situation to his cheerful demeanor he masquerades in for his sons sake to that emotional clap of relief as he realizes his dreams amidst a crowded sidewalk, Smith breaks down his own barriers and builds for himself a place alongside the acting giants of today.
With pros there must also exist cons, and those cons appear in a few different forms. The first form is that of co-star Thandie Newton who develops a bad habit of repelling the viewer. Her character, while unsympathetic in general, is overly unsympathetic not to mention a tad-bit annoying, and that's putting it nicely. Where's that girl I saw in `Crash' who stole the entire show from her co-stars, who electrified the screen and screamed "nominate me"? She's lost albeit in a mess of a character who could have been so much more but turned out so much worse than anticipated. The flow of the film is a bit choppy as well. Some parts flow by effortlessly while others drag on and even get a bit redundant. The director at times tries too hard to emphasize Gardeners destitute condition when that said condition is already made apparent enough for the average viewer.
That said, there is still a lot of good to remember when recalling this film, and Will Smith's brilliant performance is reason enough to watch it at least once. I also must mention Smith's young son Jaden who perfectly compliments his father's passion by effortlessly mastering his performance which is sympathetic, controlled and elegant, never over the top or exaggerated like it could have been. He comes across as poised as his father and as at home in his performance as an actor who's been doing this all his life. One day this young actor will reach the feats his father has, and with a beginning as strong as this one he may end up there sooner than later. This story is one to be heard, and told as beautifully as it is here makes it easy on the ears.

Much was written about Will Ferrell's first "dramatic role" as Harold Crick, an IRS auditor who begins hearing a voice narrating his life. But Stranger Than Fiction is hardly a drama. However, what Ferrell does--like Jim Carrey before him in The Truman Show--is handle a toned-down character with genuineness and affection: you believe he is this guy. Crick leads a lonely life filled with numbers and routines. While at first he considers the voice a nuisance, Crick decides more action is needed when it speaks of "his demise." Enter Professor Jules Hilbert (Dustin Hoffman), who takes on the absurd notion with revelry, trying to find out what kind of book Crick's life is leading. It turns out that the voice Crick is hearing belongs to Kay Eiffel (Emma Thompson), a very real--and troubled--author who is writing a book in which Crick is a fictional character. As usual with these things, the stuffed shirt learns to live a better life--Crick even falls for one of his audits, a brash baker named Ana (Maggie Gyllenhaal). Marc Foster (Monster's Ball, Finding Neverland) has the right tone for the film, using great urban scenes (the unnamed city is Chicago) with interesting visualizations of Crick's world of numbers. He also directs Ferrell, Hoffman, and Gyllenhaal to their most charming performances (plus Linda Hunt and Tom Hulce pop up in two funny scenes). Ferrell succeeds in being a romantic lead you can root for; a scene where he eats Ana's freshly baked cookies is totally delightful without a hint of sarcasm. Screenwriter Zach Helm has two personal traits with his story: like Crick he followed his heart (he stopped rewriting scripts and only worked on his own) and like Eiffel, the final results are not a masterpiece, but good, and entertaining enough. Britt Daniel of the band Spoon worked on the dynamite soundtrack.--Doug Thomas

Customer Reviews:
Great Cast-Good Movie.......2007-06-30
Stranger Than Fiction brings to the screen the unusual story of a very "usual" kind of guy. An IRS agent living a rather uninteresting life for the last 12 years begins hearing a woman's voice narrating his life. It turns out he might be right...
The plot has elements of both comedy and drama making it rather difficult to label it as one or the other; it's actually a bit of both.
Will Ferrell, Maggie Gyllenhaal (who is GORGEOUS!), Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman, and the rest of this AMAZING cast, carry out their respective roles very well.
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, and the music are all good.
In a nutshell, though not a masterpiece it will surely provide for an evening's entertainment.
Great Performances.......2007-06-29
First, I'll list what I like about the movie. The casting, the performances and most of the dialogs were very good. I can't think of a bad performance. The dialogs were quirky and thoughtful. Lines within their context are very good indeed. I like "So I decided to save the world one cookie at a time." Within its context, it is a fairly profound line. Ferrell is very good in this. Emma Thompson is awesome.
Second, I'll list what I dislike about the movie. The premise doesn't quite work. Does the Ferrel character hear the voice of the narrator within the novel itself. If he doesn't, I can't see how the author could explain his decisions about changing his life. If he does hear her voice within the novel, the ending does not make any sense. The author changed the ending because the character knew he was going to die in the novel and told her to finish it anyway. You get into the bootstrap problem because the author should have known because she's writing the character. Maybe I missed something? However, my main point is, the story drags because you think you know the character is going to die for most of the story. The plot just plods along setting everything up for the climax. The quaint characters and the spiffy dialog don't quite make for great movie.
I would give it 3 1/2 stars because of the performances.
Will Farrell's best work so far.......2007-06-27
I am not a fan of little movies that have a weak plot and clobber you over the head with a message, which I assumed this movie would be. However, I am a fan of Emma Thompson and Queen Latifah. The strange thing is (no pun intended), while they are both as good as ever, the actor who is stunning is Will Ferrell. He pulls you in almost immediately and you follow along because you care about him (and 'watch', lest we forget). I don't think this movie would work at all without him or that anyone else I can think of could have played Harold. (DON'T READ FURTHER IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THIS MOVIE.) That said, I also have to disagree with the reviewers who have had a problem with the ending. The ending is exactly right because everyone's priorities finally get straightened out and because the ending fits with the point of the story. The ending is the message. I loved it, watched it immediately a second time to notice things I'd missed the first time and will buy a copy to keep.
Needs a different ending (spoiler alert).......2007-06-25
First off I want to say that I very much enjoyed this movie. I just didn't like the ending. And in case you didn't see the phrase "spoiler alert" in the title of this review, here's a second warning to go no further if you haven't already seen the movie--because it's very much worth viewing, even if you end up not liking the ending. This is one of those rare instances where an ending I disliked didn't ruin the whole movie for me. It's that likeable.
So anyway, I'm sitting there watching the movie, and when it gets to the point where Will Ferrell's character has made up his mind that he does in fact need to die, I thought I had the ending figured out. As he's going through his daily routine for the last time, and the movie starts gearing up for what we all know is coming, I began thinking to myself what a genius little movie this was. Because I thought I'd figured out how it was going to end.
Here's the scenario that played out in my head. Will Ferrell's character gets all the way to the bus stop, the kid on the bike crashes in front of the oncoming bus, and Will gets ready to step in front of the bus to push the kid out of the way. But then, out of nowhere, Emma Thompson's character appears. She pushes Will to the side as she rushes past him to save the kid. Then, right after she pushes the kid to safety, the bus hits her full on. After a few harried moments of panic and shock, Will falls on his knees next to Emma and asks her why she did it. As the light fades from her eyes, she tells him, "I couldn't let you die like the others. Go, live your life and be free."
Genius. Not my attempt at movie dialogue, but the idea that the movie is a comedy, but ends like a tragedy but makes you feel happy anyway. I loved it. And as I continued to watch, that's what I wholly expected to happen. But then Will gets smacked by the bus and Emma's nowhere in sight. Then we switch to the hospital, where he's merely banged up a bunch, but still alive. Then, Emma's "sacrifice" is seen to be that her book is now merely okay instead of great. What kind of lame sacrifice is that? Why not have her give the ultimate sacrifice and thus elevate this movie to truly great status and match the rest of the movie's greatness?
A lost opportunity, to be sure. But I still liked it. That should say something, right?
Good Movie.......2007-06-25
My family enjoyed watching "Strange Than Fiction". It presents a unique approach to life which makes it interesting. It has comedy, drama, insanity and love! You won't end up in tears but parts do touch your heart, even while you chuckle.

The year 2004 marked the end of Sex and the City, Friends, and Frasier, leaving Will & Grace to carry the torch as TV's reigning urbane sitcom, deftly balancing physical comedy with a sparkling wit that made even the crudest oral-sex double entendres sound like Oscar Wilde. But it's always a red flag when a long-running series flirts with the meta side. In the episode, "No Sex 'N' the City," Karen (Megan Mullally) and Jack (Sean Hayes) encounter Frasier's Bebe Neuwirth. "Talk like Lilith," Karen beseeches her. "We hate your real voice." "I will if you will," Neuwirth replies, to "ooohs" from the studio audience. On the whole, the A-list guest stars that appeared as themselves this season (Jennifer Lopez, James Earl Jones, Barry Manilow, and medium John Edwards) do not fare as well as those who portrayed characters. John Cleese received an Emmy nomination as Lyle Finster, the father of Karen's former rival, Lorraine (a saucy Minnie Driver). Their loony courtship provides the season with one of its most rewarding story arcs. Edie Falco (The Sopranos) and Chloe Sevigny (Boys Don't Cry) appear in "East Side Story" as intimidating lesbians who engage in a turf war with budding "apartment flippers" Will (Eric McCormack) and Grace (Debra Messing). Mira Sorvino (Mighty Aphrodite) appears in "Last Ex to Brooklyn" as the only girl with whom gay Will had sex. Geena Davis (A League of Their Own is at her endearing best as Grace's flaky, free-loading sister in "The Accidental Tsuris." But the Emmy-winning, lightning-in-a-bottle ensemble need no reflected star power to shine. "Strangers with Candice," which unfolds during an eventful evening out, is Will & Grace's version of the classic Seinfeld episode "The Chinese Restaurant." Over the course of a dinner, a stood-up Will has a "date" with an unsuspecting female patron, Grace hooks up with a former fling, and Karen engages in a prank war with her "nemesis/best friend," Candice Bergen (Boston Legal).
The sixth season is something of a Grace-less one, as Messing was pregnant and missing in action in several episodes. But the remaining trio picks up the slack with rich storylines of their own. In addition to Karen's courtship, Jack becomes a student nurse and gets a new boyfriend (Dave Foley of NewsRadio and Kids in the Hall), and Will meets his future life partner, Vince (Bobby Cannavale), a policeman. As for Grace, her rocky marriage to Leo (odd man out Harry Connick Jr.) gets the season-finale-cliffhanger treatment. Will & Grace's ensemble got along famously, which makes their outtakes, included here as a special feature, particularly fun. Also included with this set is just over a half-hour of themed montages ranging from "Fashion Quips" to "Pop Goes the Culture." --Donald Liebenson

another great season.......2007-07-01
Will & Grace never fails to please. Every season is hilarious, and the actors are always at their best.
Last of the good seasons.......2007-06-15
This I feel was the last really funny season of Will and Grace but I was disappointed with the outtakes..not many and not really funny.
Great gift. We're big fans........2007-06-08
I was a little surprised at what they claimed was a "special feature". Apparently interactive menus--standard menus for a DVD really--are special now.
Still, I didn't buy it for the features. I bought it for Jack and Karen, who help keep my life fun and and drama free.
Hilarious!.......2007-06-08
I absolutely love this dvd set...just as I love all Will and Grace seasons. This show is hysterical and makes me laugh at the top of my lungs. I would highly recommend it.
Funny as always.......2007-06-08
Love everything about Season 6 especially the Fanilow episode. The bloopers are always hilarious and the themed featurettes are always entertaining. Can't wait for Season 7 and 8 to come out!!

Filmmaker Robert Zemeckis topped his breakaway hit Romancing the Stone with Back to the Future, a joyous comedy with a dazzling hook: what would it be like to meet your parents in their youth? Billed as a special-effects comedy, the imaginative film (the top box-office smash of 1985) has staying power because of the heart behind Zemeckis and Bob Gale's script. High schooler Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox, during the height of his TV success) is catapulted back to the '50s where he sees his parents in their teens, and accidentally changes the history of how Mom and Dad met. Filled with the humorous ideology of the '50s, filtered through the knowledge of the '80s (actor Ronald Reagan is president, ha!), the film comes off as a Twilight Zone episode written by Preston Sturges. Filled with memorable effects and two wonderfully off-key, perfectly cast performances: Christopher Lloyd as the crazy scientist who builds the time machine (a DeLorean luxury car) and Crispin Glover as Marty's geeky dad. --Doug Thomas
Critics and audiences didn't seem too happy with Back to the Future, Part II, the inventive, perhaps too clever sequel. Director Zemeckis and cast bent over backwards to add layers of time-travel complication, and while it surely exercises the brain it isn't necessarily funny in the same way that its predecessor was. It's well worth a visit, though, just to appreciate the imagination that went into it, particularly in a finale that has Marty watching his own actions from the first film. --Tom Keogh
Shot back-to-back with the second chapter in the trilogy, Back to the Future, Part III is less hectic than that film and has the same sweet spirit of the first, albeit in a whole new setting. This time, Marty ends up in the Old West of 1885, trying to prevent the death of mad scientist Christopher Lloyd at the hands of gunman Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson, who had a recurring role as the bully Biff). Director Zemeckis successfully blends exciting special effects with the traditions of a Western and comes up with something original and fun. --Tom Keogh

Back To The Future.......2007-06-14
The product was received sooner than the promised date, and came in exactly as expected based on the description.
The packaging and items were received in excellent condition.
I would recommend a purchase of this type to others.
Excellent movie for all family.......2007-06-08
I've watched all films when they where first released more than one time.
They depict the adventures of michael j. fox's character in a light and (nowadays) naive way.
The effects are good even tough pretty simplistic for today's standards.
The extras worth the price!
The Source of Oedipal Complexes Throughout the 80s.......2007-06-07
This was Hollywood magic all the way. With the direction of Zemeckis, the handling of Spielberg, and the comedic talents of Fox, how could you go wrong? Yes, parts 2 and 3 lost a bit of the luster of the series, but part 1 was genius. Who wouldn't want to have known what their parents were like at their age? Original storytelling with heart, Hollywood could do some refresher courses on how to make movies by reviewing this one. I fear the day Spielberg retires.
Back to the future trilogy.......2007-05-30
I gave the movie 3 stars because the third part was scratched. BUt I give Amazon 5 stars for their cutomer satisfaction, they sent me a brand new trilogy.
Excellent .......2007-05-16
This movies are excellent. You have to admire how the director connects everything.

Though the "inspirational teacher" theme may feel done to death, Freedom Writers succeeds because it emphasizes the students as much as the teacher. Erin Gruwell (Hilary Swank, Million Dollar Baby, Boys Don't Cry) comes to a southern California high school bubbling over with naive optimism, but quickly discovers that her unruly classroom isn't easily won over by her good intentions. After a few floundering attempts to connect with her students, Gruwell gives them the assignment of keeping journals about their own lives--an assignment that the class bites into with relish, which eventually bonds them together and pushes racial rivalries aside. This plotline has been made before, sometimes well, sometimes poorly; Freedom Writers, by drawing heavily from the published journals of the students--and thanks to a (mostly) unheroic script, direction that emphasizes individual characters over stereotypes, and rigorous performances from the whole cast--makes the story seem fresh and genuine. Swank does solid work, but the standouts are April L. Hernandez as a girl whose gang wants her to lie and send an innocent boy to jail and Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake) as a teacher who resents Gruwell's offbeat success. Also featuring Patrick Dempsey (Grey's Anatomy), Scott Glenn (The Right Stuff), and a plethora of strong young actors. --Bret Fetzer

Teaching is (or at least should be) a "Wonderful Burden".......2007-07-01
Although there is a certain political agenda poured on this film, it can all be forgiven due to its one unique message. Teaching is a calling, not a career. And although there are certain merits in the arguments of the antagonist in the story, about the need to be fair to students who want to learn and succeed, a true master teacher knows that differences are made one student at a time, and as a master teacher taught me in a class on teaching; "They don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care."
So I feel this is an inspiring film for teachers, and would be teachers, in every endeavor, or as the film states, those "blessed with a wonderful burden"
Every student should view this movie!.......2007-06-27
This was an awesome movie! My High School students enjoyed it so much that many of them went out and rented it so that they could view it a second or third time. They have requested to read the "Freedom Writers Diary this next year. Several have been inspired to write their own stories and these are learning disabled kids that hate to read and write.
Thought Provoking.......2007-06-27
I rented this movie the day it was released on DVD, then had to buy it & have already watched in twice more. A powerful movie that represents so many of our youth that are too often forgotten, or considered failed w/o any chances/hope. Definate food for thought & a must see for everyone.
Been there done that.......2007-06-27
There is NOTHING original about this movie. It has been done before and better (Dangerous Minds & Stand and Deliver). It's portrial of the inner city students is watered down and the acting is nothing special. I would not even suggest catching this one on HBO for free.
Young, entertaining & thought provoking!.......2007-06-23
If you like the movie Paying it Forward, you will like this movie. This movie is a must see, for it is not only entertaining but most importantly it is thought provoking. See the Freedom Writers movie, it is reminiscent of a dream that a great man had many years ago. He dreamt that all men lived like brothers. Be encouraged to try and make a difference! At My Father's Knee

Take two male figure skaters, throw in a preposterous storyline, and you've got Blades of Glory, a surprisingly funny film that almost makes you forgive Will Ferrell for his back-to-back 2005 clunkers Kicking & Screaming and Bewitched. This time around, Ferrell eats the scenery in his role as a sex-addicted, cocky skating champ named Chazz Michael Michaels. When he gets into an on-podium fight with his nemesis and co-gold medallist Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder, Napoleon Dynamite), both skaters are banned from competing in men's figure-skating events. Forever. Their fall from grace is brutal. Chazz is forced to work for a D-list skating show, while pampered Jimmy is disowned by his wealthy and cold-hearted adoptive father (excellently played by William Fichtner), who only wants to be around winners. When Jimmy points out that he tied for gold, his dad cruelly says, "If I wanted to share, I would've bought you a brother." Flash forward 3-1/2 years and Jimmy's No. 1 stalker Hector (Nick Swardson) says he's found a loophole. Jimmy's been banned from men's singles events, but there's nothing that says he can't compete in pairs skating. After a chance meeting with Chazz, mayhem ensues as the two rivals team up to go against the brother-and-sister team of Stranz and Fairchild Van Waldenberg (played by Will Arnett and his real-life wife, Amy Poehler of Saturday Night Live and Mean Girls fame). The Van Waldenbergs will stop at nothing to beat the competition, even if that means literally beating up the competition. They have no qualms manipulating their sweet little sister (Jenna Fischer, The Office) to seduce both men to try to break up the team.
The finale will be no surprise to moviegoers who know that comedies like this aren't set up to make its leading men losers. But there is one brief skating sequence set in North Korea that will surprise (and shock) many viewers because of its brutality. Ferrell and Heder make a great comedy team. Though he has been accused of playing the same role since his breakthrough performance in Napoleon Dynamite and, to a certain extent, plays a similar type of role here, Heder is spot-on as Jimmy. He manages to convey innocence, bitterness, and longing--all within the span of a few seconds and while wearing a peacock unitard (You can understand why Hector is so enthralled with him). Look for guest appearances by real-life skating champs Scott Hamilton, Brian Boitano, Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill, Nancy Kerrigan, and Sasha Cohen, who gets to sniff Chazz's jockstrap. --Jae-Ha Kim

Customer Reviews:
Great Movie, Whats with the Bad Reviews???.......2007-06-19
I loved this movie and I thought it was one of the best blockbusters so far. I don't understand why people on Amazon hate it so much. It is funny, it tells the story of two competing rival ice skaters who get eliminated from the competition due to a fight, and the only way they can get back in the ring is to ice skate together. They even learn the forbidden Korean ice skating move which has decapitated all who have tried to master it. This movie is very fun and I reccomend it to anybody.
Ferrell and Heder are good for a few laughs, but ultimately crash to the ice!.......2007-05-28
BLADES OF GLORY is most certainly not a perfect 6.0, but there are enough laughs available to make it worth a one time see!.Chazz Michael Michaels (Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy ( Jon Heder) once shared a Gold Medal in Men's Figure Skating, but both have been banned for unbecoming behaviour by the National Figure Skating Association. Both skaters have drifted in and out of cheesy ice shows and sports sales shops for three years until Coach (who else but Craig T. Nelson in a VERY bad toupee) espouses that both men can reenter the world of skating competition as the first male couple team in history. That is essentially it.We watch Jimmy and Chazz learn to skate with one another and that is where the few laughs that exist actually are (and they are funny!); but ultimately that really is about all you will get as the rest of the film falls pretty flat like a failed triple axle!
Figure Skating fans will ultimately either get all of the inside jokes or be completely insulted; but the film never intends to be anything more than a spoof and for that a few laughs is worth the $3 I paid to see it at a second run movie house! Cameoes by Dorothy Hammill, Brian Boitano,Peggy Fleming,Nancy Kerrigan,Scott Hamilton and a jock-sniffing Sasha Cohen prove that the finest skaters in the world were all in to simply have a good time and poke fun at themselves.Relax with this film, have a good time, a few laughs and never watch it again!
Blades of Glory.......2007-05-28
I tend to enjoy Will Ferrell as an actor, although I am always very cautious about seeing his movies because much of his humor tends to be more gratuitous than actually funny. However, I was encouraged by the previews, his costar Jon Heder, and my imminent boredom to see the movie. I certainly found a few parts of the movie entertaining, particularly the character of Jon Heder and the scene of their first skate as a couple. As a whole I would venture to say that the first half of the movie was very entertaining while the second half was only mildly (if at all) humorous. All the same, I would probably recommend the movie to someone who liked movies such as Nacho Libre or Night At The Roxbury.
The best stupid/spoofing/subtle comedy in years!.......2007-05-08
Will Ferrell is a rock 'n' roll ice-skater with a whirlwind sex drive, a heavy-lidded gaze and an ego twice the size of his brain. Banned from skating after fighting with his by-the-book rival (straight man Jon Heder), they are forced to become a pair in order to continue. Several skating luminaries appear in cameos. First-time directors Josh Gordon and Will Speck can't quite balance their spoof of the skating world with the "inspirational" story, the villains and the love interest, but Ferrell makes up for everything with his flawless delivery, both subtle and outrageous. He has by now established a bona-fide comic persona -- a deadpan channeling of the adolescent id -- that ranks him alongside Harry Langdon and the other great screen clowns.
Note: It appears that Ferrell and Heder did a little of their own skating, but the very difficult stunts were apparently done by body doubles with the stars' faces digitally grafted on.
I am slightly embarrassed at how hard I laughed at this movie........2007-05-01
When going in, my expectations were neither high nor low. I guess I figured that, to use Will Ferrell movies as my metrics, it could not possibly be as good as Anchorman but it had to be better than Talladega Nights (Yes, Talladega Nights was THAT bad).
Sidenote: It's true. I basically set two extremes and figured it would fall in between. If you didn't happen to catch my common sense approach and think me a genius, you have fantastic taste in geniuses.
Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder) is the by-the-book, media-darling for the sport of figure skating. Chazz Michael Michaels (Will Ferrell) is the exact opposite, though his bad-boy, sex-object image still allows him to post scores comparable to those of MacElroy. One day they end up in a fight that gets them banned from competition until they come across a loophole. They can compete again, but under the circumstances they must compete in pairs...together. Basically, like Napoleon Dynamite, if you are looking for a plot to this movie you'll never find one. If you want a movie with a decent balance of physical comedy and Will Ferrell making crude jokes, Blades of Glory may surprise you.
As long as you take the movie at face value and remember that you are not seeing a movie that is geared towards providing any entertainment other than cheap laughs for dirty jokes, this is a movie you should enjoy. Any time you try to go beyond that and search for something more you will be disappointed.
If I may be so bold, it might have been the worst career move ever for Jon Heder to use his own voice in his role as the title character in the love-it-or-hate-it comedy Napoleon Dynamite. The popularity he gained by his part in that movie has given him new opportunities, but they have been small parts because, well, when Jon Heder is in a movie, you have Napoleon Dynamite in that movie. He may continue to fight the up-hill battle of shrugging that stigma, or he can accept his fate. Blades of Glory may have been the first step towards that acceptance. Rather than trying to play support in a cheesy RomCom, he took a "starring" role as the patsy in a slapstick comedy. I can describe his character by saying that he is a tortured soul who was adopted by a billionnaire sports fan who gives him every advantage to succeed in the sport of figure skating, but it is probably easier to put it in terms which are a little easier to understand: In Blades of Glory, Jon Heder is the butt of just about every joke. As that guy, Heder succeeds.
I never got hooked on "Arrested Development," but since its demise Will Arnett's name has popped up more and more. I expected that his part in Blades of Glory would be bigger than it was, but it was certainly big enough to see why his popularity is rising.
As long as Will Ferrell makes a movie like this every few years, I will forgive him for however many attempts he wants to make to break into "serious" roles. A few of his comedic roles since Anchorman have seemed forced. In Blades of Glory, like in Anchorman, Ferrell seemed really at home in the character. It was a part that just let him do what he does best. Maybe what I am saying is that when Will Ferrell is womanizing, it makes me laugh hysterically.

Robin Williams won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck nabbed one for Best Original Screenplay, but the feel-good hit Good Will Hunting triumphs because of its gifted director, Gus Van Sant. The unconventional director (My Own Private Idaho, Drugstore Cowboy) saves a script marred by vanity and clunky character development by yanking soulful, touching performances out of his entire cast (amazingly, even one by Williams that's relatively schtick-free). Van Sant pulls off the equivalent of what George Cukor accomplished for women's melodrama in the '30s and '40s: He's crafted an intelligent, unabashedly emotional male weepie about men trying to find inner-wisdom.
Matt Damon stars as Will Hunting, a closet math genius who ignores his gift in favor of nightly boozing and fighting with South Boston buddies (co-writer Ben Affleck among them). While working as a university janitor, he solves an impossible calculus problem scribbled on a hallway blackboard and reluctantly becomes the prodigy of an arrogant MIT professor (Stellan Skarsgård). Damon only avoids prison by agreeing to see psychiatrists, all of whom he mocks or psychologically destroys until he meets his match in the professor's former childhood friend, played by Williams. Both doctor and patient are haunted by the past, and as mutual respect develops, the healing process begins. The film's beauty lies not with grand climaxes, but with small, quiet moments. Scenes such as Affleck's clumsy pep talk to Damon while they drink beer after work, or any number of therapy session between Williams and Damon offer poignant looks at the awkward ways men show affection and feeling for one another. --Dave McCoy
Description
A true motion picture phenomenon, this triumphant story was nominated for 9 Academy Awards(R) -- winning Oscars for Robin Williams (Best Supporting Actor) and hot newcomers Matt Damon and Ben Affleck (Best Original Screenplay). The most brilliant mind at America's top university isn't a student ... he's the kid who cleans the floors! Will Hunting (Damon) is a headstrong, working-class genius who's failing the lessons of life. After one too many run-ins with the law, Will's last chance is a psychology professor (Williams), who might be the only man who can reach him! With acclaimed performances from Academy Award(R)-nominee Minnie Driver (GROSSE POINTE BLANK) and Ben Affleck (ARMAGEDDON) -- you'll find GOOD WILL HUNTING a powerful and unforgettable movie experience!

Could've been better with different cast.......2007-05-30
Movies can be placed, you could say, into 3 categories:
1. Movies to be seen in a theater or owned on DVD
2. Movies to rent
3. Movies to ignore
This one, for me, falls into the second category. Who would believe Matt Damon is some blue collar genius? Damon is not a good actor in my opinion. Ben Affleck is worse. Robin Williams is obnoxious. This film used the wrong actors.
Among the Best Films EVER........2007-05-21
One of the most affecting movies in my life I've ever seen. This movie is an example of why movies can be good, why they can change you're life. One of my favorite quote's from the movie is: "You're sitting on the winning lottery ticket and your too afraid to cash it in." Not only one of my all time favorite films but Elliot Smith who's music they used PERFECTLT for the film is one of my favorite artists. Do yourself a favor and see this film.
Not very realistic, but very idealistic.......2007-05-19
Somebodies and Nobodies: Overcoming the Abuse of Rank
Not many people can ever say that they have been in any kind of situation like that of
Will Hunting and the Field's Medalist , let alone that of a psychologist faced with
helping a scared by society genius. One thing is important here:
no professor that I have ever met is going to put himself out
for someone not in his elite class. Such behavior in our society is taboo.
He would be endangering his own position in society
and such men don't get to that high a point by not playing the social games very seriously.
The closest that anyone came to this level of idealism and selflessness in history is Dr. Hardy
in his mentorship of Ramanujan.
WOW DANG ONE OF THE BEST TV DVD-MOVE FOR SHORE EVER DONE.......2007-05-08
NOW I COULD EASYLY SAY THIS WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE GRATEST MOVE EVER MADE IN THE WORLD THAT IS SO FOR SHORE & THAT IS PUTTING IT LIGHTLY
Excellent on so many levels!.......2007-04-18
The casting of Robin Williams, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon was positively spot on. Their communication on-screen was seamless. Their reactions were so real. This movie was smartly-written, brilliantly directed and expertly produced. The storyline was fanciful but believable enough to allow the viewer to suspend whatever reality they might be clinging to.
The love story of Minnie Driver/Matt Damon complicated by the sessions with Robin Williams was supurbly portrayed. You could almost feel Robin Williams' character truly drawing from real life experiences. I truly felt like he was speaking about a lost love, not reciting memorized lines.
The dialog was fresh and I have to tell you that the story really touched me.... HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Will Smith's easygoing charm makes Hitch the kind of pleasant, uplifting romantic comedy that you could recommend to almost anyone--especially if there's romance in the air. As suave Manhattan dating consultant Alex "Hitch" Hitchens, Smith plays up the smoother, sophisticated side of his established screen persona as he mentors a pudgy accountant (Kevin James) on the lessons of love. The joke, of course, is that Hitch's own love life is a mess, and as he coaches James toward romance with a rich, powerful, and seemingly inaccessible beauty named Allegra (Amber Valetta), he's trying too hard to impress a savvy gossip columnist (Eva Mendes) with whom he's fallen in love. Through mistaken identities and mismatched couples, director Andy Tennant brings the same light touch that made Drew Barrymore's Ever After so effortlessly engaging. As romantic comedies go, Hitch doesn't offer any big surprises, but as a date movie it gets the job done with amiable ease and style. --Jeff Shannon

The Cure for the Common Man..........2007-06-28
Typically when I'm choosing a movie to watch in my spare time, I will choose from action, drama, comedy, sci-fi, thrillers, etc. (what you would basically expect from any guy), I can honestly say that I very rarely choose a romantic comedy, and never a musical. However, sometimes a romantic comedy comes along that looks interesting and funny to me, generally because the premise is different from most or because I like the stars in it, or simply because my wife chooses the movie for our movie night. In the case of "Hitch" it was a combination of the first 2 factors, but for some reason my wife and I never got around to watching this movie in theaters, and for the longest time on DVD. But recently, we sat down and watched it, and I must say that even though many critics and some moviegoers weren't entertained that much by the movie, I found it to be highly enjoyable and one of the better romantic comedies I had seen.
"Hitch" is the story of Alex 'Hitch' Hitchens (Will Smith), a man whose job is to find ways for a man to successfully woo the woman of his choice into a successful dating relationship. Hitch is a man that is good at his job, but never really finds the time for his own dating life. When Hitch begins coaching a pudgy accountant (Kevin James) on how to get noticed by an attractive, wealthy heiress, his own love life begins to blossom, but through a series of mishaps starts to go horribly awry. Inevitably leaving Hitch wondering why he can make love happen for complete strangers but never for himself. But before he can figure out what's going on in his life, a newsreporter (Eva Mendes) is trying to uncover the true identity of this so-called 'Date Doctor', and after protecting his identity for so long Hitch finds himself in the media crosshairs, and the real kicker is, it's his new girlfriend that put him there.
As far as romantic comedies go, most of them are generally predictable to some extent, sometimes the predictability of these types of films lends to boredom for me. However, there are a few romantic comedies that manage to be predictable, yet still entertain, and then there are the few (very few) that just surprise you by not being all that predictable. "Hitch" falls somewhere between somewhat predictable and not all that much, there are the typical romantic comedy elements that are crucial for this type of film. For example, guy finds girl, impresses girl, things get serious, some secret about guy is discovered by girl, girl breaks up with guy, guy proclaims love for girl, and all is well with the world - those are your basic elements (give or take one or two) to almost every romantic comedy these days, and "Hitch" contains several of them. The difference for me was that unlike a lot of other romantic comedies where the story is so thin and the humor is virtually non-existent that you find yourself already knowing how the movie will end and checking your eyelids for holes within the first 30 minutes due to boredom, "Hitch" keeps things going at a very steady pace with plenty of laughs and clever dialogue that I never got distracted by getting ahead of the story, and remained entertained throughout. Probably the element I enjoyed the most of the movie was the way the character of Hitch had taken a by-the-book approach to dating, as far as his tips go, that worked like a charm for every guy that he tutored, yet could never get the same approach to work for him, and in the end he discovers that love, much like life, isn't
