First there's the classic Miller's Tale. Where a miserly miller cheats two students until the miller's wife and daughter repay the boys with a piston-pumping daisy chain. Playing a gypsy, Hyapatia has a sizzling girl-girl encounter with the Wife of Bath, while later she inflames the crystal balls on two gypsy studs!
There are many, many more Ribald Tales of Canterbury. And as our lusty travelers reach their final destination, the romantic air of their journey lingers on to become a reality!

Some Fun, but Too Raw and Unfocused.......2005-09-23
I've read the Canterbury Tales, so I was expecting lots of toilet humor (nakedness, fart jokes, etc.), but this film seems to take it too far. Their were bits that got a chuckle out of me (the Devil's fart, for example) but altogether they Pasolini seems to have enjoyed putting raunchiness in for it's own sake, rather then to further the film.
There was a few good actors, but too many were horrible. They seemed as though they were reading off cue cards, and were not involved in the scene at all.
The screenplay didn't help matters. It was a shoddy adaptation with wooden, unmotivated dialogue. Only a few stories were truly based on Chaucer, others were supposedly juxtaposing several stories into one, it didn't work. Pasolini also threw in some Chaucer but at uneven moments only to have the actors butcher the verse.
Their was some nice cinematography, as far as filming the landscapes, but other then that, relatively insignificant.
Not being aware of Pasolini's reputation before seeing this film (though I have seen 'Il Decameron', which I enjoyed more) allowed me to view the work from one of two ways, either unschooled in his style, or open to making observations without being influenced by his fame.
Either way, I was unimpressed.
Maybe the worst Italian film ever.......2004-07-18
In the Middle Ages, people generally did not stroll about in brightly colored, shintzy clothes. Especially not when they went on a pilgrimage, "to seek the holy blissful martyr". Roads and streets were not paved. People stank. One cannot convey that in a film, but please pay more attention to set decoration? The standard you would like to attain in that respect was set by Terry Gilliam in "Jabberwocky": shabby poor people, dirty faces, muddy streets. Or "The Name of the Rose".
Besides, you can only follow this movie if you have read the Canterbury Tales first. Otherwise, it's incomprehensible. By the way, almost all Italian movies I re-view of late seem incomprehensible. I used to like Italian cinema, but its products do not seem to age well. The dialogues usually seem hollow and pretentious. One notable exception: "Kaos".
A LOAD OF RUBBISH!!!!.......2003-04-27
I really wasted my money on this one! I was totally disgusted with this movie, it demeaned women in the most part and looked much like cheesey low budget porn film. There was really only one scene in the whole movie that I would have called humourous. The scenes of execution and murder were the most realistic part of the movie that I would even consider crediting the actors. I recommend no one buy this film if they can't stand, sex, violence and women being treated like objects.
Good but not Pasolini's finest!.......2002-10-03
"The Canterbury Tales" is second part of Pasolini's 'Trilogy Of Life' but certainly the most innocent, and perhaps dullest, of the three. Based on stories by Chaucer the film has been set in England, however the native tongue has been dubbed in Italian with English subtitles. The stories are fairly adult in nature but mostly harmless unlike Pasolini's shocker, "Salo".
Final thoughts - watch but don't buy unless you're a fan of the director!.
MASTERPIECE!!!.......2002-01-20
Literally!!!Brilliant!!!Pasolini is beyond reproach!!!!Go watch yer Hollywood super sound pictures for technical perfection!!!For heart and soul on the screen this is among the best!!

Chaucer's contentious pilgrims have been delighting readers for 600 years. This basic exposition of the characters will help students to visualize the motley travelers.

I wouldn't use it again.......2007-05-18
I bought this for use in my classroom, but it was dreadfully dull. Chaucer is funny; he's bawdy; he's ironic. But as told in this drab DVD, it's almost as good as Ambien. I ended up talking about the Prologue as I usually do, which according to my students is both animated and engaging--two qualities completely alien to this film. And at $49.99 for 14 minutes?? What was I thinking???
Helpful, But Basic.......2005-12-09
Our high school recently bought this item. It is a basic introduction to the key figures in "The Canterbury Tales" presented in "stop action" style, with the camera panning various illustrations of characters. Main characters are introduced, such the Squire, Wife of Bath, etc. After previewing, the teacher thinks it will be helpful but students (esp. high school) might be put off by the "cartoon style." Please be warned that this video is only 14 minutes long, which seems short for the price. Consider for purchasing - but do not expect lavish production or in depth material.
