Enjoyable experience back in the 80s; not so much now. The acting is stiff, the makeup is bad and the 80 hairstyles are laughable. Still the script was amazing...any chance of a remake without Arnold?

4 out of 5 stars The Reality Or Nonreality Of Philip K. Dick.......2006-10-10

You've got to hand it to the late Philip K. Dick; no one was better at writing about what reality is. Or at least questioned it. Are we in reality? Is what I am seeing and feeling real? And Dick's concept of the reality versus nonreality world in which we live in is given full treatment in the film. Moreover, in the film, "Total Recall," this is made clearly evident, [or not] when you wonder if Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenneger) truly is in his own reality, or if he is still in his cubicle on Earth. The film is based on Dick's short-story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale." The film is a very enjoyable watch, and has enough suspense to keep you riveted to your seat.

I especially liked the part when Quaid is visited by the Doctor in charge of the Implant business on Earth, where he bought his virtual-reality tour of Mars. It is at that point you begin to wonder: Is he really on Earth? And is this Mars business all a part of Quaid's Implant? Personally, I think that something has gone horribly wrong during his implant, and as a result, we are witnessing his reality as nothing more than a mind about to be lobotomized. And this is given by the many clues in the film. Watch the film and see for yourself. Highly recommended. [Stars: 4.5]

This is where Arnold figured it all out. He had a great script and a director who could help him execute an idea that could have been a real dud. Thankfully, all details were handled well and we get a well paced movie that keeps you guessing the whole time.

Director Richard Lester (A Hard Day's Night) took over the franchise with this first sequel in the series, though the film doesn't look much like his usual stylish work. (Superman III is far more Lesteresque.) Still, there is a lot to like about this movie, which finds Superman grappling with the conflict between his responsibilities as Earth's savior and his own needs of the heart. Choosing the latter, he gives up his powers to be with Lois Lane (Margot Kidder), but the timing is awful: three renegades from his home planet, Krypton, are smashing up the White House, aided by the mocking Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman). The film isn't nearly as ambitious as its predecessor, but the accent on relationships over special effects (not that there aren't plenty of them) is very satisfying. --Tom Keogh

I really got into this Superman movie when it came out 25 years ago. It has all the excitement, action and thrills fans have expected through these years. Wonderful performances by Christopher Reeve and Terence Stamp! This movie rocks!!

The followup to "Superman: The Movie" keeps the fast paced action moving along as Jor-L struggles with his feelings for Lois Lane while three Kryptonian supervillains ravage the planet Earth only to meet up with none other than Lex Luthor: the greatest criminal mind of all time. I personally haven't read all the trivia about Richard Donner vs. Richard Lester, special Donner editions, Hollywood politics, etc. All I can tell you is that "Superman: The Movie" and "Superman II" are both awesome, they seem like they should be part of one larger movie but can easily pass as a babysitting double feature, and wow they are fun!! I need to check out the more deluxe packages (maybe even BUY them!) because these 2000/1 editions that I checked out from the library could use a little more in the special features department. I wanted to review them anyway, though . . . because they're SOOO GOOOOOD!!!

Other than that waste of a film, Superman V, this is the only Superman where the Man of Steel has to go against someone with superhuman powers. And it wasn't just one, but four villains from the planet Krypton that has the same powers as Superman.

But it wasn't just doing battle with the other Supermen (well, one was a superwoman) that made this great, but it also showed the human side of Superman as he makes the choice to become mortal for Lois Lane's sake. Then there was the continual relationship development between Lois and Superman/Clark Kent.

Of all the Superman movies, this is by far my favorite... even beating out the new Special Effects driven "Superman Returns". If you love Superman, you need to check this one out!

    Lone-wolf gangster and yakuza outcast Riki Takeuchi decides to form his own mob: the Tokyo Mafia, a renegade outfit with a collective structure that thrives on the outskirts of the underworld. It's full of the requisite shootouts and gang fights, but the generic revenge plot lacks dramatic punch and memorable (or for that matter distinguishable) characters. First of all, the movie is not that violent, but to me, and maybe many of you, it was still pretty good. Te ending brough up a few complaints, becasue not much gets resolved, seriously, but it does set up for the sequel which is also good. If you like Riki or are a fan of the genre, try it out, and don't build it up too much.

        Lone-wolf gangster and yakuza outcast Riki Takeuchi decides to form his own mob: the Tokyo Mafia, a renegade outfit with a collective structure that thrives on the outskirts of the underworld. In this direction, of course, lays madness as the city is divided into yet one more patch of territory and "Why can't we all just get along" becomes "This means war!" This slick but impersonal gangster thriller kicks off with a completely gonzo yakuza power struggle in a high-rise office that reaches its bloody climax when the offending soldier bites off his own finger, a rather savage twist on the traditional show of respect, but the movie quickly settles into just another production ground out to meet a quota. It's full of the requisite shootouts and gang fights, but the generic revenge plot lacks dramatic punch and memorable (or for that matter distinguishable) characters. It does, however, feature the swaggering confidence and smoldering star power of Japanese action heartthrob Takeuchi, who commands the screen whenever he appears. --Sean Axmaker
