Based on the chilling bestseller by Stephen King, Misery was brought to the screen by director Rob Reiner as one of the most effective thrillers of the 1990s. From a brilliant adaptation by screenwriter William Goldman, Reiner turned King's cautionary tale of fame and idolatry into a mainstream masterpiece of escalating suspense, translating King's own experience with obsessive fans into a frightening tale of entrapment and psychotic behavior. Kathy Bates deservedly won an Academy Award for her performance as Annie Wilkes, an unbalanced devotee of romance novels written by Paul Sheldon (James Caan), whose books provide Annie with a much-needed escape from her pathetic life and her secret, violent past. After Annie rescues the injured Sheldon from a car accident, she seizes the opportunity to nurse her favorite writer back to health, but her tender loving care soon turns to terrorism as she demands that Sheldon write his latest novel according to her wish-fulfillment fantasies. From this point forward, Misery percolates to a boil as equal parts mystery, thriller, and cleverly dark comedy, with the helpless author pitched in deadly warfare against his number one fan. While Bates carefully modulates her role from doting kindness to sympathetic loneliness and finally to horrifying ferocity, Caan is equally superb as the celebrated author who must literally write for his life. It's essentially a two-actor film, but Richard Farnsworth and Lauren Bacall are excellent in supporting roles as they investigate the writer's mysterious disappearance. Frightening, funny, and totally irresistible, Misery was such a hit that some of Bates's dialogue entered the popular lexicon (particularly her nagging reference to Caan as "Mister Man"), and its nail-biting thrills remain timelessly intense. --Jeff Shannon

Description

A "heart-stopping psychological thriller" (Joel Siegel) this Academy AwardÂ(r)-winning* film is "one of the best horror movies" (Time) ever. Adapted from a Stephen King story by OscarÂ(r)-winning** screenwriter William Goldman (All the President's Men) and directed by Rob Reiner (A Few Good Men), this chiller starring Kathy Bates (Titanic) and James Caan (The Godfather), is "a Hitchcockian kind of cat-and-mouse" (The New York Times) gameplayed between two cunning mindsone as sharp as a tack and the other as blunt as a sledgehammer. Novelist Paul Sheldon (Caan) doesn't remember the blinding blizzard that sent his car spinning off the road. Nor does he remember being nursed back from unconsciousness. All he remembers iswaking up in the home of Annie Wilkes (Bates)a maniacal fan who is bent on keeping her favorite writer as her personal prisoner for the rest of his "cock-a-doodie" life! *1990: Actress (Bates) **1969: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid; 1976: All the President's Men

3 out of 5 stars Okay.......2007-06-19

The book was better. In fact, the book had more blood and gore in it, than in the movie. The book also has a much better ending to it.

5 out of 5 stars Ankles Away..........2007-06-13

Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates) is one of the best horror / thriller icons since Hitchcock's Norman Bates, right up there w/ Dr. Lecter! She is both terrifying and pitiful at the same time, causing simultaneous fear and sympathy. Paul Sheldon (James Caan) is Annie's perfect foil, doing all the wrong things, and making Annie have to (in her troubled mind, anyway) resort to sadistic control tactics in order to keep him honest, thus preserving her own little dreamworld. The relationship between captor and captive is hellish, humorous, and increasingly twisted, as Paul tries to stay alive. If you don't own MISERY, just buy it right now...

4 out of 5 stars No James Caans Were Harmed In The Making Of This Movie........2007-05-01

This was a very well made triller(if you wanna call it that). It's creepy and relistic at the same time. Kathy Bates is great in everything. Shes a real underrated actress. I was never a big James Caan fan, but in this movie he is really, really good. This movie is not flashy, its not gory, its not body counts. Its just one very creepy tale.

Description

Casey is a longshorewoman who seems to have everything: she lives on a boat with her beautiful social worker girlfriend Alex, and they are very much in love. But there's nothing like the holidays to bring out the drama of the average family. Casey has rejected her privileged upbringing and restores old boats for a living. What she can't reject is her deep attachment to her family living just across the bay. When the Olsens come together for Christmas, the unwrapping of presents takes a back seat to the unraveling of emotions. Against the backdrop of the gorgeous New England coast, Director Lauren Himmel tells a tender story of repression and the changing notions of family.

4 out of 5 stars My 1st Lesbian Movie.......2007-06-13

To add to the mixed reviews about this movie, I'm glad this was my first lesbian movie that I've seen because it portrayed a strong connection between the two characters Casey and Alex that speaks to my personal desire. I think their strong intimacy really stood out to me and was tastefully portrayed in the "sex" scene. Listening to the commentary (a feature on the DVD) during this scene helps the viewer understand that the producer's intention was not to show a graphic sex scene but a scene of lovemaking between a couple that has been together for a while and shows a strong emotional and physical bond. The scene is a prelude to what happens next which we can all imagine on our own (although I wouldn't have objected seeing some more of that scene!) Nina is great as well as the water scenes of Massachusetts!

1 out of 5 stars Time ill spent...........2006-08-13

Ladies, are we so devoid of decent lesbian flicks that we will just devour anything they throw our way? The only bright spot in this horrible mess is Nina Landey. The editing is horrible, the acting is truely sub-par: although given what they had to work with....

This movie represents 2 hours of my life that I will never get back...EVER!

3 out of 5 stars Treading... and treading... and.......2006-07-06

The movie is okay, but not great. The couple is believable, but the problem family is overdone. Mom is just a little too much and the whole situation is a little unreal. The lead characters aren't quite up to being leads. Almost, but not quite. Overall, it was slow but a good try.

3 out of 5 stars Decent movie, bad editing.......2006-03-13

All the scenes would just get cut at the end, the transformation to each new scene was really bad. Otherwise the film had a good story, good actors. My favorite was the straight friend from out of town, she was great. This film could have been really good with better editing and better music.

3 out of 5 stars Gloomy, but deliciously so..........2005-04-12

Anyone who says "best ever" hasn't seen many movies, but, it's a really refreshing move off the beaten track in terms of subject, but not very skillfully filmed. The cover art is deceiving: it looks like a warm summer romp in St. Tropez, but it takes place around Christmas on the east coast. The characters are interesting, and very real and believable; so is the family situation which is the focus of the movie and the issues between the main characters. The women have great chemistry between them - I was convinced that they have known each other and/or have been together for years. I liked their lifestyle, THANK GOD for something NOT stereotypical. This is a brooding movie set in New England, so don't expect anything cheery, but it works pretty well. I really did like the focus, but the dialogue was a bit shakey at times. The Mother is deliciously cold and stubborn, and the "buddy" who visits is the perfect counter to the gloomy mood. Worth a watch.

4 out of 5 stars A softcore, haunted house parody, lesbian fest........2006-02-07

13 Erotic Ghost sounded like a real winner. Tragedy strikes at an old girls school, which leaves the place haunted. Fast forward to the present day, when a film crew wants to document the ghosts. So the rest of the movie is just them observing lesbian ghost romps, except for the female member of the crew (Mia Zottoli) who also participates in the action. Overall, it was good, but there was a lot of room for improvement.

There are six sex scenes. Three are girl/girl: Mia and Nicole Specht, Felony and Aria Giovanni, and Felony and Nicole. These are all very good except for some audio problems that I'll comment on later.

Two are girl/girl/girl: Julie Strain and The Porcelain Twinz (Zen and Zero) are in both of these. Unfortunately, these scenes are the weakest in the movie. They are played mostly for comedy and don't really generate much heat.

The final scene is the best and really ends the movie on a high note. Nicole and Felony go at it again, with Mia watching. Quite a few times, Nicole and Felony step over the line into hardcore territory with no hesitation. Then Aria joins in on the action. When her needs are met, Mia decides to jump in too.

All the women are beautiful and hot, I just wish that Julie and the Twinz had been used more effectively. Other than that, the only problem is the audio. During many of the sex scenes, the overdubbing is very poor. The sounds of the actresses don't match up well at all with the action.

The 3D gimmick was a complete waste. With the glasses on, I couldn't see anything that even remotely looked 3D. Fortunately, it doesn't affect the video, and if you watch it without the glasses, it looks fine.

Retromedia has released better videos. However, if you're familiar with their stuff, and you really like lesbian action, I recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS!!!.......2005-03-14

This movie is great. My wife loved it as well. We had to wait, backorder and all, for 3-4 months to get this dvd. But it was worth the wait. You don't even have to watch till the end...

1 out of 5 stars This is not 3-D at all.......2003-09-03

If you are interested in a silly DTV movie with lots of naked girls (including Julie Strain), by all means this won't disappoint. However, if you are intrigued by the 3-D idea then forget this one. Not one second was actually shot in stereoscopic 3-D at all. What the makers have TRIED to do is exploit something called The Pulfrich Illusion. This technique can give the impression of depth in a flat movie if the camera and background move in different directions. This has been tried, usually without success, in Super Bowl half times, music videos, cartoons, even sitcoms. They did not understand how to do do it and even with the glasses on there is very little if any depth to be seen, and certainly not anything which should be advertised as being "in 3-D". Shoot out the passanger window of a car moving at 25 MPH and then watch the video with the glasses and you will see more of the pulfrich effect than you will in 13 EROTIC GHOSTS.

5 out of 5 stars Julie Strain the most Beautiful Ghost I ever saw,,,,.......2003-05-03

13 Erotic Ghost,is a fantastic movie,,, Julie Strain is at her best in this movie,,,, only Julie can walk into a room and light up the whole room like she does,,,with her radiant smile, her natural wit, and humor,, and her natural beauty,,,,, If you love Julie, like I love her,,, you will want to see this movie,,,It has alot of Lesbian ghosts, doing their thing,, but Julie has a way of introducing humor that makes even their antics funny and humorous,,Julie is such a talented actress; and even though their was not a formal script and the actresses and actors adlibbed, they did a great job, a must see if you are a die-hard Julie Strain Fan like I am....
