From the moment that Prince Eric's ship emerged from the fog in the opening credits it was apparent that Disney had somehow, suddenly recaptured that "magic" that had been dormant for thirty years. In the tale of a headstrong young mermaid who yearns to "spend a day, warm on the sand," Ariel trades her voice to Ursula, the Sea Witch (classically voiced by Pat Carroll), for a pair of legs. Ariel can only succeed if she receives true love's kiss in a few day's time and she needs all the help she can from a singing crab named Sebastian, a loudmouth seagull, and a flounder. The lyrics and music by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are top form: witty and relevant, and they advance the story (go on, hum a few bars of "Under the Sea"). Mermaid put animation back on the studio's "to do" list and was responsible for ushering Beauty and the Beast to theaters. A modern Disney classic. --Keith Simanton

Featuring three enjoyably "awful" movies from 1958-59, Cult Camp Classics, Vol. 1: Sci-Fi Thrillers turns nuclear radiation into cause for celebration, especially if you enjoy movies with extra cheese. With the Cold War in full swing and society's worries blamed on the threat of nuclear annihilation, sci-fi buffs (like future filmmakers Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante, and John Landis) could see a new monster movie almost every week. Many of them came from Allied Artists, the low-budget B-movie production company (formerly Monogram) that rose from the ghetto of "poverty row" distribution to produce countless exploitation thrillers between 1946 and 1979. The '50s saw the rise of nuclear monster thrillers, and Allied popularized the trend with its own menagerie of giant, irradiated creatures. The key to Allied's success was its crowd-pleasing combination of exploitable ingredients, and what better way to combine sci-fi, sex, and horror than to unleash a towering babe with an attitude problem? That's exactly what Allied did with Attack of the 50-Foot Woman, a now-classic campfest in which a spurned wife (Allison Hayes) is irradiated by a glowing alien space-ball, grows to a height of (you guessed it), and exacts revenge upon her cheating husband (William Hudson). A year before she bared her shapely backside as Playboy's Playmate of the Month for July 1959, Yvette Vickers costars as Hudson's scheming mistress, giving the film an extra boost of sex appeal. With bargain-priced effects including a giant floppy-fingered hand, hilarious process shots, and cheesy models destroyed by the world's biggest bitch (for whom it is still possible to feel some sympathetic compassion), the movie's not as good as its celebrated poster (which now adorns movie-geek T-shirts around the world), but it's still a lot of fun.

The Giant Behemoth was director Eugene Lourie's obvious attempt to capitalize on his 1953 hit The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, starring a gigantic paleosaurus rising from the Atlantic with a bad case of atomic radiation. London is the monster's eventual stomping ground, but the lumbering lizard is camera-shy for nearly an hour; you can imagine Beaver Cleaver and his pals groaning through seemingly endless scenes of talky exposition, anxiously awaiting the climactic stop-motion creature effects supervised by the legendary Willis (King Kong) O'Brien. Scoring much higher on the camp-o-meter, and far more entertaining, is the cult classic Queen of Outer Space, which borrows props and costumes from Forbidden Planet, Flight to Mars and World Without End for its outrageously kitschy plot about manly astronauts who crash-land on Venus and discover an underground society of mini-skirted space-babes. Unfortunately the disfigured Venusian queen (Laurie Mitchell) is a man-hater supreme, so the spectacularly costumed Zsa Zsa Gabor (as a Venusian scientist, no less) leads a revolution against her. With a screenplay by Twilight Zone veteran Charles Beaumont and a story credited (almost incredibly) to legendary playwright/screenwriter Ben Hecht (who surely never suspected his idea would eventually yield this movie), Queen of Outer Space is exactly what you'd expect it to be: So bad it's good, and more than worthy of inclusion in this irresistibly priced triple-feature set. --Jeff Shannon

      On the DVDs
Three feature-length commentaries accompany the sci-fi thrillers in Cult Camp Classics, Vol. 1. Two of the commentaries are hosted by Tom Weaver, a noted authority on sci-fi and horror films whose historical acumen is more casual than academic: While sharing the commentary on Queen of Outer Space with the film's titular star Laurie Mitchell (who became a mainstay at fan conventions at Weaver's invitation), Weaver fails to explain how the production came to use props and costumes from the classic Forbidden Planet, and that's a glaring oversight. He compensates as an amiable interviewer with the equally good-natured Mitchell, and it's a treat to hear them enthusiastically reading unfilmed scenes from the film's original screenplay. For the commentary on Attack of the 50-Foot Woman, Weaver is joined by the film's comely costar Yvette Vickers (another regular at sci-fi conventions), and their combined anecdotes provide an adequate oral history of this camp-classic production. Star Wars veterans and special-effects masters Dennis Muren and Phil Tippett provide the loose-and-lazy commentary on The Giant Behemoth, which consists mostly of Muren making sarcastic jokes about the film's glacial pacing. It's hardly the authoritative commentary that some fans might've hoped for, but Muren and Tippett are well-versed in special-effects history (Muren even owns the original stop-motion Behemoth creature model), and they share an infectious enthusiasm for the films that inspired them to excel in their profession. --Jeff Shannon

      5 out of 5 stars I used to run 10k a day.......2007-06-17

I used to be a very active athlete..running, basketball, gymnastics...you name it. A couple of months ago I graduated college and moved out to a tiny apartment in a big city with my boyfriend and needed to find a way to workout without paying big bucks for a gym and without running in the dangerous area I live in.

This was the answer. I consider myself in great shape, and was very skeptical about girly workout videos. Since I started this video my flexibility improved greatly, I've become more defined, and my balance has improved. I never weigh myself, but if you eat your greens and use this workout tape, you will lose fat. Also, I'm very muscular and was worried about getting "big," and this doesn't do that at all.

I was also very concerned about how cheesy this was going to be. I didn't want to look like an idiot working out in front of my boyfriend, and you really don't do anything ridiculous, like some of the dance cardio stuff out there. In fact, sometimes he jumps in and tries to keep up.

My suggestion: do the 40 minute workout every other day, and use Carmen Electra's Fit to Strip (disk 2) every other day. Results are amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but I like it anyway..........2007-06-17

This is a tough DVD to get into. You must be fast and coordinated. Denise combines 20 minutes of cardio, 20 minutes of interval training (cardio and weight training combined), and 10 minutes of flexibility stretches. Some of the moves are tricky and unpredictable, and some are hard to do, like the backward leg lunges, but keep moving. That's what's important. This workout will really make you sweat a lot. But I like that because that what's needed to lose weight. I do all 3 workouts at a time and feel very accomplished afterward. I highly recommend this DVD.

      4 out of 5 stars Great Workout.......2007-06-12

I just got this DVD and I think is a great cardio workout. The first day that I did it made me sweat in the first 10 minutes and once or twice I stop for seconds to take a sip of water, my heart was right to the roof; even thoug I run 3 to 5 times a week for 50 minutes. So, right know I'm doing this DVD 3 times a week and this will be my second week and still is challenging. I defenely recomend this DVD for an intermediate/advanced level not for beginners. It is a great Workout!!!
      Thank you Denise

5 out of 5 stars Fat burning machine!.......2007-06-10

I love this dvd! I have Taebo and Pilates, but this is the only one that I REALLY love. It works so well, and has 2 workouts and a flexibility section so that you don't get bored. You can choose to do one or the other, or do all three for a real fat blasting workout! I did the Cardio section for about 4 non-consecutive days and cheated on my diet, but I still lost 3 1/2 lbs doing this workout. I LOVE IT!

5 out of 5 stars Fun and challenging.......2007-06-09

I am enjoying this DVD very much. Denise keeps you moving through a challenging and dynamic workout. I recommend it for anyone that is fairly fit and wants to get a good aerobic and strenth training workout.

Who says history has to be boring? Warner Bros.' series of "cult classics" is a cheese-popcorn fiesta just waiting to pop. This set includes three "historical" epics long on action and cleavage and proudly short on those dull pesky facts. The Colossus of Rhodes (1961), a splashy toga party starring Rory Calhoun, marks Sergio Leone's credited directorial debut. As sword-and-sandal films go, it's a rollicking tale with excellent special effects, especially the earthquake and its resulting devastation.

Howard Hawks took time in between Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Rio Bravo to direct Land of the Pharoahs (1955), with a cast of thousands, led by the heaving bosoms of Joan Collins. No expense was spared, with nearly 10,000 extras "and 1600 camels in the production!" as the marketing materials of the time proclaim. William Faulkner co-wrote the screenplay, which features delicious turns of events like a lying, scheming so-and-so getting comeuppance by, yes, being sealed alive in a pyramid: "A structure to house one man--and the greatest treasure of all time."

And The Prodigal (1955), directed by Richard Thorpe, tells the ancient biblical tale of two toiling brothers, but ups the ante for the wandering son with a decidedly ungodly pagan temptress in the form of Lana Turner (it's a wonder he ever made it back to his father's farm!). Originally an MGM release, The Prodigal hearkens to the mid-'50s era of the great biblical epic (which many fans believe is due for a renaissance), though it takes extreme liberties with Jesus's parable. Then again, if Lana Turner's figure doesn't signify "debauchery" and "riotous living," what does?

The boxed set also includes some very instructional extras, like vintage interviews with Hawks and contemporary interviews with Peter Bogdanovich and film historians. Let the catapulting begin! --A.T. Hurley

4 out of 5 stars Some films are less campy than others in this trio of historical epics including one by Hawks and another by Sergio Leone.......2007-06-30

There was a time where camp classics weren't exactly intentional but were every bit as enjoyable as the camp films we have now. "Historical Epics" is the fourth in Warner Home Video's "Cult Camp Classics" and at least two of these three films are actually quite good outside of the classification.

The first "The Colossus of Rhodes" was the first film that Sergio Leone took credit on as a director. Set during during the Hellenistic era before the rise of Rome, this film features cowboy b-movie star Rory Calhoun as a Greek(!) hero vacationing in Rhodes who gets pulled into an attempt to overthrow the Emperor. The centerpiece of this film a 180 foot high statue that stood astride the waterways of Rhodes and could be used as a weapon to defend the city by dumping hot molten lead on invaders or would be revolutionaries.

Featuring risable dialogue, great action sequences and impressive production design, this international production (featuring actors from Italy, Spain, America and France)features a number of stunning set pieces that hint at Leone's great Italian Westerns such as "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" and "Once Upon a Time in the West". The film looks quite good with an excellent commentary track by Leone biographer and film historian Christopher Frayling who covers everything from the historical context of the film (the real statue of Rhodes was believed to be about 38 feet high and overlooked the city)and the original theatrical trailer. Frayling points out the good (Leone's stunning use of the camera), the bad (often the dialogue is quite ripe)and the ugly (the overwrought performances of some of the actors)but still finds merit in the film.

Leone does a hommage to Hitchcock's "North by Northwest" and "Sabteour" particularly during the end sequence on top of the Colossus of Rhodes where there is a fight sequence. Fans of cinema will see other references to other films that Leone sneaks in to this historical epic which is still quite enjoyable both as a memorable peek into what would come later from Leone's classic films as well as the silly plot devices and dialogue.

"Land of the Pharaohs" was directed by Howard Hawks and co-written by William Faulkner(!)so how could one go wrong with this historical epic about the building of the pyramids? Joan Collins plays a Nellifer in this epic production while Jack Hawkins is the Pharaoh Cheops putting thousands to work to build is massive tomb. It's interesting because the structure of this film echoes Hawks' great western "Red River". "Pharoahs" is an excellent minor Hawks classic with an epic scale and of the three here is the least camp best film of the bunch. Collins brings the camp element to the forefront with her performance as the scheming Nellifer.

The film features Peter Bogdanovich providing a commentary. Bogdanovich doesn't think much of the film (nor did Hawks as is evident in the interview excerpts included here)but it's a pretty good historical epic with the massive spectacle and production design that one expects from the genre. If it fails to live up to Hawks best films, that could be because he was working in a genre that he wasn't totally comfortable with.

The last film included here "The Prodigal" featuring Lana Turner fits into the camp camp quie well. It apes the Cecil B. DeMille Biblical and historical epics quite well. Basically this tells the story of the prodigal son (Edmund Purdom) who falls for a pagan priestess (Turner).

Dr. Drew Casper gives a frentic and interesting commentary track that makes more of this film than is there. Casper mentions in his commentary that he feels this is a remake of Raoul Walsh's "The Wanderer" from 1926 which I've never seen. He also provides interesting biographical information on many of the actors in the film.

All the films included here look extremely good with some looking much better than others depending on the source print and its condition. Warner does an excellent job of putting this together much as they did with some of the other "Cult Camp Classics" sets in the series (the other two I purchased I haven't watched yet--I wanted to go for the set that had the Hawks and Leone films first). Some of these sets have no or minimal extras (such as a trailer only)but most have commentary tracks and all the ones here even when they aren't perfect provide background on the films. Frayling is always entertaining and does an outstanding job adding humor and has a relaxed conversational style that makes his informative commentary the best of the bunch here.

Three stars for the films with an extra star for the commentary tracks.

If you were a kid in the early 1960s, then you saw The Parent Trap with Hayley Mills--it's as simple as that. Now Disney has pulled the beloved comedy--about a pair of twins who meet for the first time at summer camp and vow to reunite their long-divorced parents--out of the mothballs and remade it with a decidedly '90s feel. This time, the twins act is performed by newcomer Lindsay Lohan, who plays both Hallie and Annie, who each live with one of their parents (Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson). Adversaries when they first meet at camp, Hallie and Annie become, well, sisters when they figure out that they are siblings. The comedy springs from their efforts to sabotage Dad's impending marriage to the gold-digging Elaine Hendrix, while reintroducing Dad to Mom. Quaid has a nice, loosey-goosey way with slapstick, as does Richardson, who plays a very funny drunk scene. --Marshall Fine

4 out of 5 stars Best of the Remakes.......2007-07-02

Lindsay Lohan made her first appearance in this latest remake of the Disney classic based on the German children's book. Two girls meet at summer camp. Other than their styles, they look exactly the same. When their hatred of each other forces them to be isolated together they learn the truth. They are sisters. Their parents split up and each took one of the twins and never mentioned the other. Wanting to see their other parent, the girls switch places. When the parents find out about the switch they will have to get together to make an exchange of siblings.

But there is a snag. The father is about to get remarried. Now everything has to be sped up if there is any hope of getting the parents back together again. Revelations and madcap hijinks make up the rest of the film as the twins do everything in their power to stop the wedding and reunite their parents.

Much better than the Olsen Twin remake. While much of the story is very close to the original, it has been properly updated. The parents were a shipboard romance that failed. Newer technology has Lohan beside herself even more than Hayley Mills was. The rest of the cast is excellent and Quaid (the father) really shows he is a better actor than he is usually given credit for. Even the extras are entertaining. A fun documentary about making Lindsay twins and an extra scene involving the Queen of England. Fun for the whole family. Check it out.

      4 out of 5 stars Family Fun.......2007-06-08

As with the original version of this movie with Hayley Mills, this is a nice movie despite the premise being so horribly ridiculous. What nice divorcing parents would separate their twins, each take custody of one and never mention or attempt to see the other for 12 years? I did thoroughly enjoy Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson in their roles. There were several differences between this movie and the 1961 version, actually enough to make this enjoyable. I didn't feel like I was watching different actors play the parts and recite the lines of the same characters from that movie.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-05-21

Great funny movie, perfect for the family. Everyone will like it!! get the soundtrack too music is great. Awesome movie.

      3 out of 5 stars Cutesy.......2007-04-18

I vaguely remember the 1961 version of The Parent Trap. I say vaguely because that version of the movie was apparently as equally compelling as the 1998 version...which isn't that compelling. But...my kids enjoyed it thoroughly.

The movie takes place way before Lindsay Lohan's pics could be spotted...or should I say pics of Lindsay's privates could be spotted...all over the Internet. Lindsay plays (both) twins separated at birth by their divorcing parents. When the twins meet up by chance 10 or so years later they come up with a diabolical plan to reunite their parents.

Anyone not familiar enough with the story has been under a rock...perhaps since 1961. Anyone that missed the movie deliberately because it sounds too cutesy and far-fetched has done himself or herself a favor. This is a movie for kids. Adults will be more entertained watching their kids interpret the themes in the movie.

So if you're over the age of 14 and you've somehow found yourself contemplating The Parent Trap as the next movie that you just have to see among all of the other available titles...I would say that life under that rock has taken its toll on you in a most severe way.

If you're looking for a decent movie for your age 6 - 14 year old(s)...this could be the one if your kids can handle a couple of smooches (no...none by Lindsay...Dennis Quaid gets a few kisses from Elaine Hendrix and Natasha Richardson). Oh, and I would be remiss not to warn, I'm not sure that the Speedo that Simon Kunz appears in for a brief scene is suitable for viewing by anyone!

5 out of 5 stars Godzilla meets James Bond.......2007-07-02

Great Godzilla movie and loads fun, and not only because of the monster battles. It starts out (After the credits) on top of a building with a bunch of people looking for flying saucers. (These people NEED to get a life). One of the stars in the movie, a reporter, is blamed for the saucerpeople not coming, and a proffessor says "I can't help but think that terrible things are about to happen." DUH. After that intillectual thought, a woman screams that she saw a UFO, but turns out only to be a meteorite. And then the scene switches to the star of the movie, a policeman talking to a reporter about Enciphilitis breaking out because of the heat wave that that's going on in January. The reporter looks out into the sky and sees the meteorite that will give Earth a few problems. Stay tuned for more details. The reporter leaves and the dude's boss comes in and tells the guy to guard a european princess, Salina Salno, who is being sent to Japan because of an assination plot to kill her. Then the scenes switches to the Princess being hypnotised by an alien in a flying saucer to get off the plane, and the plane blows, up and a proffessor goes to find the meteorite, that fell, and will later find out that it holds Ghidrah. Later, the policeman finds the princess ands she's a martian from Venus. While this is happening, the assasinators are sent to kill the princess, this goes on for a while so I won't go to deep into it, and while THIS is happening, Rodan and Godzilla appear and start wrecking the place. And Ghidrah hatches from the meteorite and starts doing the same as Godzilla. The fairies from Godzilla x Mothra come in and call Mothra, (one of the babies died) and she finds Godzilla and Rodan fighting each other, shoots them with her silk and tries to convince them to fight against Ghidrah. They don't want to, so Mothra goes and fights Ghidrah herself, and Godzilla appears as well as Rodan and the three start attacking Ghidrah together. Meanwhile The princess's memory has restored itself and the assasinators have been killed. Meanwhile, Ghidrah is being wrapped up in silk and Godzilla tosses him of the hill, and Ghidrah flies away, humiliated. It's a great movie and great collection to any monster series.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Media does it again.......2007-06-08

Excellent packaging, well thought out menu, good commentary and extras. The price point is the major selling point for me. Not my favorite Gojira flick, but the fact that its in my collection makes me happy.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable DVD of one of the more rare of the Classic Godzilla films. Though it's not without flaws.......2007-06-06

While just having this Godzilla film finally on region 1 DVD, is cause for celebration, there is much more to this release than just the movie itself. With the addition of a great bundle of extra features adding to the fun, and a nicely designed package this becomes a very worthy purchase. But while the film quality is mostly above average or acceptable, it is unfortunately (though not unexpected) a bit below average at times. Just don't expect crystal clarity all the way through the entire film.

      Good points:

      1) The movie itself is one of the best of the Godzilla films. This is from the originators of the franchise and this being the fifth in the series, Toho studios and this production crew are at the height of their game here. Ghidorah's introduction as mentioned in other reviews, is very memorable. The human characterizations are fully realized and completely believable. Very interesting and compelling interaction between all the main characters. This is actually one of the better plotlines in a Godzilla film and if you subtract the Godzilla part of the movie, it's still a fairly compelling plot. Princess escapes death by unseen alien assistance, she becomes a spokesperson for the aliens and pleads with the earthlings to be forewarned of the emminent disasters that await. Foreign assasins attempt to find her and kill her. Police are involved in her protection as well in finding out why she now has the personality of an alien. The structure of the story is very well formed and does not have the hokey kind of plots that are reminescent of the low budget 1960's era sci-fi genre.

      2) The package has a very unique look and design to it. The Obi band is a nice touch. And it appears much like the "Mothra vs Godzilla" package or the "Godzilla Raids Again" package. Very distinct, utilizing poster art from the era in which it was originally released, encapsulated in what appears like a film canister "look" to it, as a fold open style book. The center spine creaks a bit too much when it opens though. But perhaps it's appropriate as it further reflects the age of the original film.

      3) The extras are well done. Poster gallery, commentary by godzilla "expert" and trailers and a fine documentary on Eiji Tsuburaya. The poster gallery includes brief explanations regarding each poster, which is a helpful addition.

      4) Sound quality is very good. The introductory score grabs your attention and sustains throughout the movie. Dialogue mix has been improved over previous releases and there is a very noticable difference between the 50's era toho pictures and this time period of mid to late sixties. All the groundbreaking sound effects are here in bright and full mono, with both the Japanese and U.S. dialogue tracks fully represented. Some will be disappointed by a lack of sound options, but the sound is as it was originally released in 1964 with a mono soundtrack.

      5) The anamorphic widescreen picture and image for the Japanese edited version while not pristine, and considering it's 40+ year old age, is not bad. Spots and scratches appear from time to time, though not glaringly so. It's hard to believe that this movie could look perfect after all these years, and it certainly does not. But here in all it's full color glory is about as good as it can look, which isn't bad at all and actually quite clear for most of the movie. Contrast is sharp, color is balanced well, images are crisp. And while there is some expected minor fading and it is at times too dark or too light, it does not detract from the overall presentation and most viewers will be satisfied with the film quality. Of course it will not compare favorably to a film released recently, but with the age that this film is and the fact it is of the low budget variety, it is comparable to other DVD releases from movies of this time period.

      Bad points:

      1) The American edit otherwise known as "Ghidrah, the Three Headed Monster" suffers from a worse looking image quality than the Japanese edit version. Right from the opening titles, the picture is blurry, colors are washed out, scratches and spots exist throughout. Contrast is poor and unbalanced, and though the majority of it looks about average or above, at times it looks like a VHS quality image. Most of the other Godzilla releases are superior in image quality compared to this U.S. edited version. The American Ghidrah definitely shows it's age. In addition several edits and changes from the original Japanese edit, detract needlessly. For example, editing out nearly the entire Mothra song that the peanut twins sing in calling for Mothra's assistance. There was no valid reason for cutting the song out. The images remain but different music has been inserted at that point. Sometimes the U.S. edit works better with dramatic music at certain points. In this particular instance it was ill advised.

      2) The commentary, while much appreciated for all the vast amounts of information and anecdotal memories, becomes extremely tedious after a while. David Kalat proves from the outset that his knowledge of the subject matter is robust and authoritative as he covers a lot of ground in small bursts. But with one person talking almost non stop, it becomes tiresome to listen to. Perhaps another commentator teamed with him might have broken the monotony a bit, and could have offered another viewpoint to certain details. Also, while Kalat touches upon the differences in the U.S. and Japanese releases in a very detailed manner, it would have helped to have screen shots accompany his descriptions. Sometimes his knowledge goes beyond that of most viewers and he seems to assume everyone is able to follow right along. On the other hand, the personal stories of his own children's interest in Godzilla and it being the main reason he himself has altered his attitude towards dubbing, was a very interesting and illuminating observation. He definitely hit the nail on the head with those comments, which could apply to practically every person watching, be they longtime fans or casual viewers. Also, his information regarding the toho studios production schedules and how they were producing quite a few films in short periods of time, with some productions overlapping others, whilst using the same production teams, was quite interesting. It illustrates for me, the achievements made in special effects, miniatures, and production values that many of these toho movies are unfairly denigrated for.

So all in all a very good release, and while not perfect is still a very fine, complete movie package. Classic Media have proven with previous releases that they are capable of producing great products, and they continue that trend here with this release of one of the older, more rare Godzilla films and one that has not truly had a legitimate U.S. release...until now. I rate it 4 stars and a recommended purchase, with great extra features and a generously informative, though sometimes monotonous commentary track.

5 out of 5 stars Let's try to review the DVD....PLEASE.......2007-05-31

Yes, I agree that is is a title long overdue. I also agree that this is a great Godzilla flick. But, let's review the DVD itself--not just the film. In fact, how can you post an accurate review without the media? You can't! So, when this monster (pun intended) comes out next Tuesday, let's all review the DVD in all of its glory. You know, the transfer, features, sound quality, etc.

      Thank You...

5 out of 5 stars The Last of Toho's Golden Age of Godzilla.......2007-05-09

Contrary to popular belief, Godzilla and Rodan are not good in here. The only good they do is drive off King Ghidorah, the space demon who spews gravity beams. The fiery birth of king Ghidorah is one of the best SFX i have ever seen, even surpassing CGI in some regards. The human plot is pretty cool, but berefit of Ishiro Honda's usual social commentary. There is a bit of monster humour, but nowhere nearly as blatant or ridiculous as in the subsequent films(such as that STUPID dance Godzilla does in Invasion of Astro-Monster). A must buy.

A surprise hit in America, this 1994 Australian comedy is anchored by Terence Stamp as a transsexual who, in the company of two drag queens, travels to a remote desert location to put on a lip- synch performance--to the amazement of the locals. Getting there on a pink bus named Priscilla, the trio stop and play for people all over the Outback, getting the same homophobic, bewildered responses. The weak link in the film is dialogue that seems to have been pulled from "Queer Movie Banter for Dummies," all bitchy and cliché-ridden but fortunately salvaged by strong acting. The most fun comes whenever the three are performing; fans of Abba will be particularly pleased. The DVD release has optional full-screen and widescreen presentations, cast and crew bios, optional French and Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

      Description

They came. They conquered. They looked fabulous. This wonderfully inventive, visually stunning and incomparably funny Australian import about three drag performers braving the vast, rugged outback won the 1994 Academy Award(r) for Costume Design. Veteran actor Terence Stamp (Star Wars: The Phantom Menace), Hugo Weaving (The Matrix), Guy Pearce (L.A. Confidential) all give hilarious ? and heartfelt ? performances in a three-fishes-outta-water story that's "one of the wildest movies ever made" (Rex Reed, New York Observer)! With a contract to perform a drag show way out in the Australian desert, Tick (Weaving), Adam (Pearce) and Ralph (Stamp) each has his own reason for wanting to leave the safety of Sydney. Christening their battered pink tour bus "Priscilla," this wickedly funny and high-drama trio head for the Outback...and into crazy adventures in even crazier outfits. You go, girls!

The original To Wong Foo, really worth a spin. Terrance Stamp and cast are good for a laugh.Drags a bit in spots (pardon the pun), but worth it just to see the costumes, better yet the Aussie wit.

This is a great movie if you're into this sort of thing. I'm a fan of Rocky Horror and Hedwig and the Angry Inch so I like to add this to the list. Although all three are very different they each have great music. I love the character interaction. Everyone seems to be so comfortable. Great movie!

4 out of 5 stars A bus they name Priscilla.......2007-04-04

There was a real trend in the mid nineties with films like "The Birdcage," "Too Wong Foo," "Its my Party," and "Love! Valor! Compassion!" exploding onto the screen as America began to feel more at ease with its gay brothers and sisters. And as we watched these movies, a whole `Gay Comic Genre' was really born. Also we can't forget about the popularity of gay stand up at that same time.

"Priscilla" did indeed avail itself of this trend, and every gay humor trick in the book. It also managed to slip us some really amazing visual, comic and compassionate moments. Except for rabid, card-carrying homophobes, this Australian road-movie-with-a-difference is a charmer. The three are: aging transsexual Bernadette (Terence Stamp), youngish occasional bisexual Tick or Mitzi (Hugo Weaving) and gay-all-the way Adam or Felicia (Guy Pearce), the youngest.

The trio's specialty is to appear on-stage dressed in the most outrageous, garish, feathery female outfits, undulate and sort of dance while lip-synching to 1970s disco songs, from ABBA to whatever comes close to Z. They do their lavish karaoke excellently, and the musical selections are a constant treat. Bernadette is the wisest and quietest of the three, and most serious --she hardly ever cracks a smile. Mitzi is a bit mercurial, sometimes solemn, and sometimes buoyant. Felicia, the wildest of the bunch, is full of animal spirits, a prankster who gets often on the others' nerves. But still, there is essential harmony among those divergent types.

Remarkably, their characters, with all the flamboyance, misadventures, mean hearted blokes, and desert creatures (not to mention some very musical Aborigine) kept them admirably cool, show quiet tenacity and retain their sense of humor, so that no matter what the circumstances, there is never panic or hysteria. In a peculiar way, this steadiness blends in well with the beautiful, barren landscapes which often take on a surreal look. This is an entertaining and touching movie. Recommended to anyone with a great sense of humor!

      5 out of 5 stars "I Love The Nightlife. . . I want to boogie".......2007-04-02

Considering the scarcity of honest to goodness real looks at the drag queen world from the movie camera angle, this movie is a flower above the rest. All three involved on the long open road trek aboard the "S.S. Priscilla" are totally involving and do not allow a moment for the audience to ho-hum. Like Bernadette comments, "Yes. . a bloody good performer 7 days a week."
My only critical observance is that, being I have been to some real live authentic drag shows myself, I have observed mostly professional like performances with the best of them. And considering that this troop of gals is on high par with the elite Le Girls, I sometimes wonder why they allow their final antics after each performance sink into a yearning for audience approval of where they just performed. Most real professional performing drag queens do not sink into a quest of approval, or wanting to be loved, especially after they just brought the house down to the knees of the dance idolizing fans before them. Usually the performances that triggered enthusiastic crowds brought high applause rather than discerning jestures, odd looks, and a raving audience isolated in the dark corners of the theater. These are not the real drag shows that I have seen, that belted swell songs and left audiences gasping for more.
Other than that, this movie is far better than the rest in drag show material, behind the scenes, and around the tour bus that ventures where no drag queens have dared gone before.

Second in a series of four box sets, Cult Camp Classics 2: Women In Peril includes three films in which victimized female protagonists provide the viewer hours of entertainment. Watching Caged, Trog, and The Big Cube consecutively provides lots of laughs, but also makes one wonder what exactly satisfies about this archetype while ladies struggle through run-ins with drug dealers, hardened prison matrons, and a hairy cave-dwelling monster, in these cases. Each indicative of the decades in which they were made, these films reiterate how cinematic narratives have long capitalized on the viewer's hope that woman will either escape or get revenge. Caged, considered the first women's prison film, follows Marie Allen (Eleanor Parker), who is imprisoned for acquiescing to her husband's desire to rob a store. Prison cell bar shadows cast across the screen, and repeated close-ups of Allen's horrified face, make Caged a fine example of film noir. With little to laugh at, viewer sympathy mounts as Allen acclimatizes to the rough prison life, and conversely, disappointment sets in when one sees her innocence slipping away. One comes to hate the evil prison matron, Evelyn Harper (Hope Emerson), who believes in iron-thumb treatment. Caged is a rare example in its genre in which sexual exploitation is not at the core of the film. Trog and The Big Cube are less tragic, more schlocky, and fascinating as a pair due their gorgeous stars, Lana Turner and Joan Crawford, cast late in their careers. Trog is a hairy, pre-human cave dweller á la Planet of the Apes, wreaking havoc once unleashed by an anthropologist played by the ravishing Crawford. The Big Cube's greatest assets are the scenes depicting acid trips induced by Johnny (George Chakiris), a medical student who cooks LSD to dose sexy girls and enemies. Psychedelic lighting freak-outs overpower the drama regarding young hipster Lisa's (Karin Mossberg) step-mom, Adriana, (Lana Turner) who is driven mad by Johnny so he can marry Lisa for her hefty inheritance. Although none of these films will scare a female viewer, they offer three wonderful renditions of fear-based roles mastered by some of the sexiest women in Hollywood. --Trinie Dalton

4 out of 5 stars Crawford, Turner & Parker light up the screen in B-movie marathon.......2007-06-20

Warners has dug into the archives to produce this fabulous box-set containing three B-movie treasures. Starring three of the most talented women to ever grace the screen, fans of classic movies are bound to get a kick out of this.

TROG (released in 1970) has gained quite the cult following over the years, mainly because it features Joan Crawford--mommie dearest herself--in what turned out to be her final movie role. Crawford plays anthropologist Dr. Brockton, who stumbles across the missing link, a hulking ape-man creature, who goes on a killing spree. Crawford's deadly serious performance as the overwhelmed Brockton is the icing on the cake for this journey into Schlock City. There's also some fine work from serial upstager Michael Gough.

THE BIG CUBE (released in 1969) is similarly-notable for featuring Lana Turner, former M-G-M "Sweater Girl". Turner must have needed the money badly, because this strange journey into psychedelia is a heaping pile of doggy-do. She plays Adriana Roman, a retiring actress (go figure), whose conniving stepdaughter tries to have committed after drugging her with LSD. George Chakiris ("West Side Story"), Dan O'Herlihy (Turner's love interest in "Imitation of Life") and Karin Mossberg co-star, all happy to slum it in Z-grade territory.

CAGED (released in 1950) was actually a prestige production from Warner Brothers. Along the same themes as "I Want to Live!", the story concerns a young woman, Mary Allen (Eleanor Parker) who is thrown into the big dollhouse and straight into the sadistic claws of Matron Harper (Hope Emerson). Eleanor Parker (in her greatest role aside from "Detective Story") delivers an Oscar-nominated performance. Agnes Moorehead and Betty Garde are memorable here too.

With this box-set, THE BIG CUBE and CAGED are receiving their home video debuts. While I completely understand the reasons why Warners was reluctant to unleash BIG CUBE onto an unsuspecting world; CAGED deserves to be rediscovered. As for TROG, well...any film with Crawford can't be all bad.

These DVDs are also available individually, but the box-set will ultimately be the cheaper option to grab all three movies in one hit.

4 out of 5 stars CAGED is a powerful drama with remarkable performances.......2007-03-27

TROG with Joan Crawford and THE BIG CUBE with Lana Tuner are truly camp classics, but CAGED is a serious and absorbing drama starring Oscar-nominated Eleanor Parker in the lead role. She delivers a complex and memorable performance as a young, pregnant prison inmate. Her Oscar competition in 1950 was staggering: Gloria Swanson for Sunset Boulevard, Bette Davis and Anne Baxter for All About Eve and the winner, Judy Holliday for Born Yesterday. Agnes Moorehead does an excellent job as a sympathetic but ineffectual prison warden, but the performance you will never forget goes to Oscar-nominated Hope Emerson, who dominates every one of her scenes as the cruel and sadistic prison matron. Lee Patrick appears as the a wealthy and influential prison inmate lusting for the Eleanor Parker character. Betty Garde, Jan Sterling, Gertrude Michael, Ellen Corby, Olive Deering and Jane Darwell are excellent in supporting roles. This is a memorable film which was shocking in it's time and still delivers a strong punch for today's audiences. I am not sure CAGED belongs in the camp category, but I am happy to have it on DVD anyway I can get it. I give CAGED 5 stars on it's own, but the other two films in this collection bring my rating down to four stars, although they rate higher with fans of cult camp flicks.

5 out of 5 stars Crawford fans rejoice; it's finally coming!.......2007-03-21

Have been waiting about fifteen years now to see Joan Crawford's final film, 'Trog' and the wait is over at last. A description of the plot along with the other two included:

      The Big Cube (1969):
Adriana Roman (Lana Turner), is a former actress who marries a wealthy tycoon Charles Winthrop, who dies in a boat accident off the Mexican coast. Winthrop's daughter, Lisa, whom despises Adriana, plot to drive her insane with drugs so she and her drug-addict boyfriend, Johnny, can marry and inherit all the money for themselves. When a Broadway playwright, named Frederick Lansdale, and a close friend of Adriana suspects something, he tries to rescue Adriana from the mental hospital where she gets committed and redeem Lisa before Johnny can double cross her.

      Caged (1950):
Frightened 19-year-old Marie Allen (Eleanor Parker) gets sent to an Illinois penitentiary for being an accomplice in an armed robbery. A sympathetic prison head (Agnes Moorehead) tries to help, but her efforts are subverted by cruel matron Evelyn Harper (Hope Emerson). Marie's harsh experiences turn her from doe-eyed innocent to hard-nosed con.

      Trog (1970):
In England, some students are mysteriously murdered. A search team is sent out to kill the creature suspected of killing the students. The creature is captured and brought to anthropologist, Br. Brockton (Miss Joan Crawford). Dr. Brockton realizes the creature is the "TROG" the missing link between man and ape. She decides to study it and educate it. Just as she was making progress, "TROG" escapes and abducts a little girl. Brockton and colleagues franticly search for Trog hoping to find it before the police do...

What a bonus that these titles will be released on the superior WHV label and at a bargain price.

It may be stretching things to call this trio of films Cult Classics (although Hot Rods to Hell does have its own fan appreciation website), but they provide more than enough cheap thrills and guilty pleasures to make this set irresistible to aficionados of BG (as in "so Bad they're Good") films. Whether it be Disney's Bon Voyage or Hostel: Part 2, travel has provided Hollywood with no end of horror stories. In Zero Hour (1957), it's not snakes on a plane, but tainted halibut that provides the terror, and with both pilots incapacitated by their unfortunate meal choice, it's up to traumatized pilot Ted Stryker (Dana Andrews) to overcome his "war record" and land the plane. If you're a comedy buff, then surely this scenario sounds familiar. Well, it should be familiar, and stop calling me "Shirley." This is the film that Jim Abrahams and the Zucker brothers mercilessly and meticulously spoofed in Airplane!. It's all here, right down to little Joey's visit to the cockpit (but without any references to gladiator films) and the rich dialogue the Airplane crew lifted nearly verbatim ("It's a different kind of flying altogether").

Andrews is back in the driver's seat in Hot Rods to Hell (1967), a film that loses a little something when not heard through the tinny speakers of a drive in theatre. Andrews stars as a man forced to put the brakes on the kicks-crazy hot-rodding punks terrorizing his family. "These kids have nowhere to go," a local cop stoically observes. "And they want to get there at 150 miles an hour." Laurie Mock costars as Andrews' conflicted teenage daughter who catches the leader's eye (he's tired of "stale bread" Mimsy Farmer). The dialogue is wicked cool and the overwrought acting all over the road. In short: don't let this pass you by. Andrews isn't on board in Skyjacked (1972), but we feel more confident with Charlton Heston at the controls as the no-nonsense pilot ("That man doesn't fool around," a colleague observes), whose plane is being hijacked to Moscow. The cast is a made-for-TV movie lover's dream, with Yvette Mimieux as a stewardess in peril (and Heston's former flame), Susan Dey, former football great Roosevelt Grier as a cellist, Walter Pidgeon as a senator, James Brolin as the very wired Vietnam vet, and Claude Akins providing ground control. This one's more of a bumpy ride, but the cheesy dialogue, earnest performances and soap opera developments keep Skyjacked flying high. --Donald Liebenson

Finally, the producers of AIRPLANE! are finally cutting loose Zero Hour!, the film and many others that provided funny fodder for the parody movie AIRPLANE!

As far as 'Hot Rods To Hell', which BTW stars one of my favorite actresses, the beautiful Jeanne Crain, I rate it a -5 STARS and then a +10 STARS for being so bad that it is just super great! Result? 5 STARS! Ya gotta see it to appreciate! (Or believe it for that matter)!

Skyjacked? Well, kind of like 'Airport' as it stars, well, just about everybody. What the heck; 5 STARS!

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe all three of these movies in one box set at such a great price.......2007-04-19

I've always wanted to get all of these movies for years, and now there are coming out in one box set and at a great price. I've always loved Linda Darnell and she's in Zero Hour which the comedy Airplane is party based on. Hot Rods To Hell has Dana Andrews and Jeanne Crain who started in the 1945 State Fair. This movie has never been on DVD before. If you bought these movies on their own each is about $14.00 on Amazon.com. I don't see how you can go wrong with paying $[...] for this boxset. Thanks Warners for releasing these movies for us to enjoy in a great boxset. Thanks to Amazon.com for offering great prices.

5 out of 5 stars great freedom and great workout.......2007-05-09

I've been going to Bally for over 5 years. They have similar boot camp led by an instructor for an hour to 1.5 hour. Bally has fixed and straight schedule. And the class is usually full and crowed with 20-40 people.

Billy Blank's DVD let me do it whenever I can in my own room. I don't have to fight traffic after work to Bally anymore. The bonus is when I have to travel for work, I can bring it with me and play it on a laptop, too. Sweet!

The intensity is about the same as Bally. Billy Blank may be more focus on the Deltoid and Shoulder. He probably thinks when you see a better upper body of yourself, you will stick with the routine. So, the idea is good. Leg exercise is a bit lacking. Nevertheless, it is a very good start on cardiovascular workout. Damage on join is less then Steps or running. It is very close to swimming when you use resistance band.

Liked many other said, I don't like the bands come with it. It is worthwhile to get your own bell by a third party or get 2 dumpbells. 5-12 lb weight is about right, depending on your condition. Newbie might want to start light with 2 bottles of unopen V8. Each bottle is about 2 lb and the weight is free. After the work out, you can drink them. :) The key difference between belt and weight is that belt has progressive resistance for each motion. Weight has fixed resistance. I prefer belt and buying new belts every few months. Belt wears out; weight last very very long. Just checkout your grandpap's garage whom think he once was superman. :)

Have fun and live healthy. :)

      3 out of 5 stars Not Billy's Best/Worse.......2007-04-12

I've done TaeBo on and off for 10 years back to the original tapes. So when I found this on closeout at Big Lots for under twenty bucks, I decided it would be a good investment. I love tricking my muscles by doing different things. I strength train with weights, job once or twice a week for 3 miles, and from April thru October I try and ride my cylce 30 miles a week. So I'm in pretty good shape to start, but this workout can be challenging.

You start with mission one and its a good but not killer workout. I think the entire workout is 50 minutes from startup to cool down. While you will sweat, this isn't a killer workout. I find myself doing some of the exercises in doubletime the entire time, instead of going slow thru the first two sets. I will say this workout has helped me become fore flexible and I've noticed it in my kicks and balance. Its a good workout and you can do the bonus 8 minutes for additional workout.

Mission two is a tought workout even for me. I've found out by tying knots in the bands, it made it much harder than before. I don't believe this to be a high cardio workout, and you might burn more calories in the first mission. Still it is a challenging 40 minutes with an additional 8 minutes as well. On days where i've done nothing, I actually do both mission 1 and 2 together for a killer killer workout!

Disc 3 is an ab blaster and its has really firmed me up. Even when I eat foods that bloat me, I can see and feel a big difference. I've really enjoyed how Billy targets the abs.

Overall I give this series a 3.5. I would have liked to seen a killer 50 to 60 minute workout, but thats not the case. I've recently ordered the TB2 Ripped series from Amazon, that according to reviews is the toughest hardest workout Billy has. One of the workouts is over 60 minutes and I hope this is what I'm looking for. The production value on disk two is let me say horrible. Billy is all over the play and fumbles over his words and his power bands. Time after time we get to see the lovely Shelli while Billy is trying to adjust his bands. They will be counting 6, 7, 8, and Billy will yell one more time on like count 6. So when they get to 8 and start over, Billy says great job while they are on like count 2 or 3 of the new set. I found this amuzing and annoying at the same time.

Overally I like this series, but its not Billy's best. It could have been better.

2 out of 5 stars My my my.......2007-02-21

Well, I'm not a bootcamp fan. For those looking for a good CARDIO workout, this certainly is not. It's not well managed, the bands can be extremely painful (think ripping out hair by the roots!), and the heart rate will not go up. The arm work burns the shoulders, but the pressure is too light to do any of the other muscles any serious good.

If I had it to do over again I would not buy this set, and I will NEVER do the ab video again. I stopped midway b/c the bands were so painful.

      3 out of 5 stars Hard.......2007-01-22

Wow, this is hard. I thought I was in decent shape, but the beginners video nearly did me in. There probably should be better notices that this is for fit people. Though I've only done it a couple of times so far.

Also, he uses my worst pet peeve in exercise videos - he says one more time when he really means three more times. I hate that.

      3 out of 5 stars slightly disappointed.......2007-01-16

I have been a Taebo user for at least 8 years. I love Billy Blanks and find his workouts to be the best for me. This set I was a little disappointed with. The new red bands I find to be uncomfortable and noisy. I use the black bands that came with the other bootcamp set instead even though the black bands are not weighted. I also found this Elite bootcamp to be slow and more of a beginner workout. I don't feel it is challenging enough, at least for me.
