The moving biblical tale of Esther--a humble Jewish girl who saved her people from annihilation and won the heart of the handsome Persian king Xerxes--is the subject of One Night with the King, a lush ode to one of the Old Testament's most inspiring women. Esther, played with spark and confidence by Tiffany Dupont, could perhaps be said to be the first career woman to "have it all"--while also serving her people, and God. The film, shot on location in India, has the feel of the great epics of the '60s--a sensation underscored by the appearance, in small but pivotal roles, of both Omar Sharif and Peter O'Toole. (Even Raiders of the Lost Ark's John Rhys-Davies--"Bad dates!"--echoes earlier desert adventures.) But the film belongs to the willful Esther, who navigates among war, bloodlust, persecution, and terror with the strength of knowing she's serving the Lord, and her people. If the film has a few anachronisms--including the young Esther's suitor, who has blonde streaks and a surfer-dude delivery ("The market was rilly busy today")--its heart and its focus never waver. Fans of biblical tales and well-made drama for the entire family shouldn't miss it. --A.T. HurleyDescription

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington Political heavyweights decide that Jefferson Smith (James Stewart), an obscure scoutmaster in a small town, would be the perfect dupe to fill a vacant U.S. Senate chair. Surely this naive bumpkin can be easily controlled by the senior senator (Claude Rains) from his state, a respectable and corrupted career politician. Director Frank Capra fills the movie with Smith's wide-eyed wonder at the glories of Washington, all of which ring false for his cynical secretary (Jean Arthur), who doesn't believe for a minute this rube could be for real. But he is. Capra was repeating the formula of a previous film, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, but this one is even sharper; Stewart and Arthur are brilliant, and the former cowboy star Harry Carey lends a warm presence to the role of the vice president. Bright, funny, and beautifully paced, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is Capra's ode to the power of innocence--an idea so potent that present-day audiences may find themselves wishing for a new Mr. Smith in Congress. The 1939 Congress was none too thrilled about the film's depiction of their august body, denouncing it as a caricature; but even today, Capra's jibes about vested interests and political machines look as accurate as ever. --Robert Horton

It Happened One Night Director Frank Capra (Mr. Smith Goes to Washington) took home every Oscar in the book (well, okay, all the major ones) for this seminal 1934 comedy starring Clark Gable as a hard-bitten reporter who stays close to a runaway heiress (Claudette Colbert) rather than lose a good story. Funny and sexy, the film is full of memorable scenes often referred to in other films, such as the "walls of Jericho" (a mere bedcover hung on a line down the middle of a room so opposite-sex roommates can get undressed), and Colbert's famous flash of thigh to stop a speeding car in its tracks. Capra's brisk, urbane brand of wit was a perfect complement to his populist faith in the common man (in this case, Gable's character), and that inspired combination makes this film both a spirited entertainment and an uplifting experience. --Tom Keogh

You Can't Take It With You
Frank Capra's 1938 populist spin on the George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart play about a family of happy eccentrics is a great deal of fun, though it significantly rewrites the original work and doesn't represent Capra (Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington) at his best. Jean Arthur plays a member of the blissful Vanderhof household who falls in love with a rich man's son (James Stewart) and brings him into her nutty home. Lionel Barrymore, who played such a bad guy eight years later in Capra's It's a Wonderful Life, is the wonderful Grandpa Vanderhof, who addresses God during the dinner prayer as "sir" and speaks plainly and beautifully of why it's good to be alive. Capra took this opportunity to rail against big business and champion the common man, but the overall tone of the film--typical for the director's comedies--is buoyant and snappy. --Tom Keogh

Mr. Deeds Goes to Town
Mr. Deeds Goes to Town is Frank Capra's classic screwball comedy about a village innocent who inherits $20 million, only to discover it's more trouble than it's worth. The screwball in question is Longfellow Deeds (Gary Cooper), a small-town greeting-card poet and tuba player transplanted to the big city to administer his newly inherited wealth, where fast-pattering, wised-up cynics, sneering society denizens, and corrupt lawyers lord it over the ingenuous and straightforward. Deeds's idiosyncrasies are amply magnified in the tabloids by journalist "Babe" Bennett (Jean Arthur), dating Deeds as a cover, only to discover she's the sap when she falls irresistibly for him. But the damage has been done, when Babe's column is used by a pack of corrupt lawyers, Cedar, Cedar, Cedar & Budington, to prove Deeds mentally unfit. The miracle of this unforgettable comedy is how it embraces dark material, calling into question some common assumptions about capitalism while maintaining an approachable atmosphere of light comedy, and deceptively so. You'll be so pixilated by its charm, you won't rest until you've doodled your way to a rhyme for "Budington." --Jim Gay

Based on the posthumously published memoir by Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas, Before Night Falls is artist-director Julian Schnabel's second exercise in artist biography, but where Schnabel's earlier film Basquiat was relatively conventional, this film is bolder in both style and execution. Schnabel is perhaps too enamored of his subject as a noble martyr, lending the film a somewhat inflated sense of importance. Still, it's rare to see an artist's life and work so elegantly interwoven, and Before Night Falls uses all of Arenas's life as its canvas, from impoverished youth to lively gay freedom in mid-1950's Cuba; imprisonment during Castro's antigay regime; and to New York City in 1980, followed by Arenas's battle with AIDS and subsequent suicide (depicted here as assisted) in 1990.Through these extreme rises and falls, Arenas is always writing, his typewriter his most faithful lover and weapon (by way of smuggled manuscripts) against the dark forces that surround him. As Time magazine's Richard Corliss wrote, Arenas is "a serious actor's dream role: to be a gay Jesus in a modern Passion Play," and Javier Bardem--the first Spanish actor to receive an Oscar nomination--inhabits the role with subtle ferocity, charting this emotional odyssey with outer reserve but blazing infernos of internal passion. And while Schnabel suffers from a hyperactive camera, there's poetry here--visual, dramatic, and literal--and vibrant humor to temper the deep tragedy of Arenas's life. Schnabel also uses his actor friends to good advantage: a nearly unrecognizable Sean Penn adds an ironic touch to his brief appearance as a peasant, and Johnny Depp is both funny and fearsome in dual roles as a drag queen and vicious army interrogator. --Jeff Shannon

Life's a bitch, or at least it is to Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog. Since his first appearance in 1997, Triumph has emerged a breed apart as Late Night with Conan O'Brien's biggest breakout star. In fact, not even Conan himself has had a bestselling CD, or appeared on Hollywood Squares. Triumph gives new meaning to the honor "Best in Show" with this collection of his most memorable Late Night appearances, including his now-classic reports at the Westminster Dog Show (where he takes full advantage of backstage access, if you get my cruder meaning), his Red Carpet interviews at MTV's Video Music Awards, and, the pick of the litter, his visit to the Star Wars "uber-dorks" waiting in line for the opening of Attack of the Clones (To a Darth Vader impersonator in full regalia: "Which of these buttons calls your parents to pick you up?"). For Triumph fans, this DVD is a tremendous, exciting experience... FOR ME TO POOP ON! --Donald Liebenson

A Night at Red Rocks, taped in Colorado's gorgeous natural amphitheater in 1992, is an ambitious undertaking for these still-stomping rock dinosaurs: the classic Moody Blues lineup playing with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and no safety net. The band rises to the occasion, giving fans a solid if sentimental survey of its long and prosperous career. The performances and the material vary in quality, but the group comes through where it counts. Hits like "The Voice," "The Story in Your Eyes," and "Nights in White Satin" sound great, as does "Question," the Moodys' greatest contribution to rock music. The Symphony plays well, but the group misses some prime opportunities to use it, adhering to synth parts where an orchestra would have worked nicely (most notably in the rocking "Gemini Dream"). There's no surround mix here, but band leaders Justin Haywood and John Lodge deserve kudos for their able sound mixing. --Michael Mikesell

Calling this concert by Three Dog Night and the Tennessee Symphony "a new moment in history," as the announcer does, is an absurd bit of hype. But it doesn't mean fans of the group won't enjoy the 80-minute show, recorded in 2000 at Tennessee's Renaissance Center (also on CD). Singers Danny Hutton and Cory Wells's voices are still strong, if a bit shrill (third Dog and ex-drug addict Chuck Negron isn't mentioned, let alone seen or heard); their backing band features several original members; and the orchestra adds some interesting arrangements and considerable color. Most of all, these guys had a lot of hits, and they're all here, from "Mama Told Me Not to Come" to "One," from "Eli's Coming" to "Easy to Be Hard" and the inevitable "Joy to the World." Creative direction and interviews with the principals help turn this into a pleasant walk down memory lane, at the very least. --Sam GrahamDescription
One of the most popular groups in music history, Three Dog Night take the stage with the Tennessee Symphony Orchestra, performing sixteen of their chart-topping hits. Marie, Old Fashioned Love Song, Try a Little Tenderness, Family of Man, Easy to Be Hard, Celebrate, Joy to the World.

"How did you get this talk show?", a seemingly perplexed David Letterman jokes with his successor, Conan O'Brien, in an early clip included on this primetime special. Conan was unknown to the general public when he took the reigns of Late Night, but he had already established his comedy cred in hipper comedy circles as a writer on Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons. And while the prospect of a tenth anniversary show might have seemed unlikely in those early years, Conan and company remade Late Night in the host's pop-culture savvy and self-deprecating image. While Conan's fifth anniversary special might have been a nice addition to this disc, this 10th Anniversary celebration is an uproarious recap, sure to have newcomers scratching their heads at such Late Night characters as Pimpbot 5000 and the Masturbating Bear. Along with the classic clips (William Shatner forgetting the name of his signature Star Trek character, a practical joke that sends former sidekick Andy Richter naked onto the set of Today), there are celebrity cameos by Ben Stiller and Mr. T and appearances by Will Ferrell and Jack Black, and breakout star Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. The generous bonus footage collects even more signature moments not included in the special. So, to quote O'Brien's huckster in a commercial spoof: You want to laugh? Late Night with Conan O'Brien has the guests, the costumes, all laughs, all the time. Come and get it! --Donald Liebenson
